    An apparatus has been developed for electron-atom Compton scattering experiments that can employ a pulsed laser and a picosecond pulsed electron beam in a pump-and-probe scheme. The design and technical details of the apparatus are described. Furthermore, experimental results on the Xe atom in its ground state are presented to illustrate the performance of the pulsed electron gun and the detection and spectrometric capabilities for scattered electrons. The scope of future application is also discussed, involving real-time measurement of intramolecular force acting on each constituent atom with different mass numbers, in a transient, evolving system during a molecular reaction.

    We can observe photoemission of isolated molecules in the molecular frame by means of a photoelectron and fragment-ion coincidence measurement for dissociative photoionization, which enables us to look at photoionization dynamics directly predicted by first-principles calculations. New phenomena and systems, such as interatomic resonant photoemission, van der Waals molecules and non-linear molecules, have become the subject of recent studies of photoionization dynamics. In this review, we discuss various quantum phenomena in molecular photoionization, including interference effect between ionized continuum state and resonantly excited bound state, experimental evidence of localized core-hole state in symmetric molecules, core-hole decay process and charge migration mechanisms, unimolecular photoelectron diffraction, and symmetry considerations of photoionization dynamics in non-linear molecules.

    In this study, aiming at experimentally investigating the origin of intermolecular interaction in terms of electronic structure, we have broadened the applicability of electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) that enables us to study electron momentum distribution of individual molecular orbitals by using electron Compton scattering. As a result, we have developed a highly-sensitive apparatus whose correction efficiency is estimated to be two orders of magnitude higher than that of the existing apparatus of same size. In addition, it has become possible to improve the experimental resolution of electron binding energy by a factor of two. Furthermore, the apparatus has been successfully applied to EMS studies of core orbitals. In parallel, theoretical analysis to extract information on reaction intermediates from time-resolved EMS data has been developed. These achievements form the basis for making interaction-orbital imaging of atomic and molecular clusters feasible.

    In this study, aiming at visualizing the molecular-frame electron "motion" that governs various properties of a molecule, we have challenged to combine our time-resolved electron scattering spectroscopic technique and intense laser technology. As a result, we have successfully (1) enhanced the signal count rate of the time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy by more than six times compared to our previous study, (2) realized an atomic momentum spectroscopy, which enables us to investigate intramolecular atomic motions in a molecule, by using a picosecond pulsed electron beam, and (3) investigated that a wider range of spatial distributions of molecular orbitals could be addressed with electron momentum spectroscopy using high incident electron energies. These achievements form the basis for the realization of "electron momentum spectroscopy with laser-induced molecular alignment".

    In this study, aiming at visualizing intramolecular atomic motion during a chemical reaction, we have enhanced the potential ability of atomic momentum spectroscopy (AMS) that enables us to investigate momentum distribution of atoms in a molecule by using high-energy electron quasielastic backscattering. As a result, we have successfully developed (1) a highly-sensitive multi-channel apparatus which has increased the signal count rate by nearly three orders of magnitude compared to existing setups, (2) a protocol to extract information about atomic motion due to molecular internal motion from AMS experimental data, (3) an AMS apparatus using an ultrashort pulsed electron gun whose temporal width is short enough to conduct time-resolved spectroscopy. These achievements form the basis for realizing time-resolved version of AMS.

    Through resent advances in laser technology, it has become feasible to create strong laser field, which is comparable with the electric field that a bound electron feels in matter, and various kinds of researches regarding ultrafast molecular dynamic in such strong laser field has been activated. The objective of this project is to develop laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy that is expected to provide more complete understanding of interaction between strong laser filed and matter. For this purpose, many theoretical calculations as well as development of several experimental techniques have been attempted. As a result, this project has successfully provided concrete experimental conditions and guidelines for improvements in experimental techniques, required to realize laser-assisted electron momentum spectroscopy in the near future.

    In this study, in order to investigate correlation between molecular orbital shape and electron correlation effect in conjugated molecules, we have extracted information on the three-dimensional distribution of π orbitals, such as internuclear distance, phase, and spatial extent, from experimental electron momentum distribution of the corresponding orbital. As a result, it has been shown that the phase of the target orbital can be known visually from the observed oscillatory structure in the momentum distribution, and that the spatial extent of the orbital can be assessed to some extent by Fourier transform of the momentum distribution. Furthermore, a time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy (TR-EMS) study has been made for an aromatic molecule to demonstrate that TR-EMS has an inherent capability to observe spatial distributions, in momentum space, of not only the outermost orbital but also all other, more tightly bound orbitals of a molecular excited state.

    One might expect that when an electron collides with a molecule, the probability of occurring a collision and the physical content of the collision must be largely dependent upon the angle between the incident electron beam axis and the molecular axis as well as upon the impact parameter. The objective of this project has been to open up a new research area to investigate such stereodynamics of electron-molecule collision. For this purpose, a new experimental technique, which measures the differential cross section of electron scattering as a function of spatial orientation of the target molecule and momentum transfer, has been developed. As a result, this project has successfully and for the first time found effects of stereodynamics on the cross section, which is much more substantial than supposed.

    In this study, in order to investigate correlation between nuclear and electron motions in a molecule, we have developed a high-resolution electron momentum spectroscopy that would be capable of measuring nuclear coordinate dependent electronic wave functions. As a result, the resolution of electron binding energy has been improved from 2.7 eV to 1.1 eV by improving energy resolution of an electron analyzer incorporated with a monochromatized incident electron beam. To achieve higher resolution, it is found to be fundamental to develop a new electron analyzer with reduced aberrations and advanced electron optics as well as to introduce highly stable voltage supplies.

    In this study, in order to apply ultrashort pulsed electron beam techniques to electron inelastic scattering experiments, we have developed a new pulsed electron gun having a small kinetic energy distribution, while keeping its duration applicable to a real-time observation of chemical reactions. As a result, the developed electron gun is successful in producing electron pulses whose energy width is less than electronic excitation energies(c. a. 5 eV)of typical simple molecules. The electron gun has shown the expected performance in its intensity as well as in the energy width.

    The aim of this project is to develop time-resolved electron momentum spectroscopy. It is a unique means that allows one to see the change of electron motion in transient species, which is the driving force behind any chemical reactions. While there remains an ample room for improving experimental qualities, we have successfully made the first observation of the change of electron motion during chemical reactions, such as the three-body photodissociation dynamics of the acetone molecule at 195 nm.

    In this project, we have measured photoelectron angular distributions from fixed-inspace molecules using a multi-coincidence velocity map imaging spectrometer. Based on the photoelectron angular distributions, we have made molecular photoionization dynamics clear ; determination of electric dipole matrix elements, photon-induced molecular reaction, interatomic resonant photoemission, and observation of core-hole localization. The photoelectron angular distributions of a single bent molecule have been also measured for the first time.

    Interaction of the soft x-ray with molecules can lead core-level photoionization. We investigated the core-level photoionization of typical and simple molecules in gas phase by means of a coincidence technique. Molecular-frame photoelectron angular distributions and recoil-frame photoelectron angular distributions were obtained for gaseous molecules. We compared between experimental results and calculated ones with x-ray photoelectron diffraction theory to discuss feasibility of new method to determine geometrical structures of gaseous molecules.
