UNLABELLED: Despite the growing importance of long-term care due to an aging global population, few studies have addressed information-sharing challenges in the transition of older adults between hospitals and care facilities. To address these challenges, we conducted a mixed-methods study involving staff from both facilities in Japan. Three investigations were undertaken to identify the challenges of information sharing, revealing the absence of appropriate sharing methods, the failure to share information beyond current medical information, and the need to share certain information orally. Moreover, because of their different natures and roles, hospitals and care facilities consider other types of information important. These findings will contribute to research on aging issues and support for older adults, as a lesson learned from the most aging society. Electronic clinical pathways (ECPs) strongly encourage the standardization of medical treatment and the sharing of information among medical staff. The goal of this study was to determine the influence of ECPs on information sharing among nurses in a university hospital. Four experienced nurses, selected based on ECP composing and operation experience, were recruited from the department with the most frequent users in the first-round interview, 132 nurses' questionnaire answers were analyzed, and eight nurses participated in the second-round interview. This study conducted a mixed-method (interview-questionnaire-interview) investigation to extract the behavioral signs of unintended errors in information sharing after the ethical approval was obtained. On the basis of ANOVA and t-test for the questionnaire and constant comparison for interview, this study found that the greater extent of user dependency on convenient ECPs in the frequent-use group led to mistakes under hectic conditions. This study also found evidence of poor management of ECPs when problems occurred. The immature design of ECPs provoked inappropriate behaviors among nurses even though they brought about some benefits such as mitigation of the burden of daily recording tasks. The findings empirically showed the ECP user's behavioral changes regarding the technology-induced error.

<p>Assistive technologies for dementia care will be a fruitful way to enhance resources in care facilities, especially in the era of global super-aging. While assistive technologies have been deployed across national boundaries, their users—people who are cared for and their caregivers—are bound by policies in their respective countries or regions. Therefore, technology developers have to pay attention to local policies and related rules. This chapter examines this issue using a case study approach from care homes in Japan. We describe the opportunities and challenges of implementing these technologies from the micro, meso, and macro perspectives. Finally, this chapter attempts to delineate possible solutions from the author’s perspective.</p>

BACKGROUND: The burgeoning field of gerontechnology, which is the interdisciplinary field of applying technology to ageing issues, has focused primarily on "active ageing" and maintaining independence for older adults. To date, there has been less focus on people who develop dementia. Here, we argue for the field of gerontechnology to have a greater emphasis on clinical applications for dementia. This can be captured under the rubric of "psychogeritechnology," a term we have coined to describe the range of technology approaches to the prevention, prediction, screening, assessment, diagnosis, management, and monitoring of people at risk of, or living with, dementia. AIM: Using Japan as the world's leading "super-aged' nation as a paradigm, the purpose of this paper is to provide a narrative review of the use of innovative technology for the diagnosis, management and support of people at risk of, or living with, dementia. METHODS: By following the "life course" of dementia, we will use clinical exemplars and case studies of psychogeritechnological applications from a Japanese context, specific to each stage of dementia, from the preclinical to the advanced stage. In the preclinical stage, the focus will be on prevention and early detection of degenerative cognitive-functional trajectories. In the early-stage of dementia, we will outline examples of screening, assessment, diagnosis, and clinical monitoring, as well as the use of technology to support independent living and autonomy. In the moderate stage, examples of safety monitoring systems, and assistive technology to foster independence, quality of life will be outlined. Finally, in the advanced stage of dementia, our focus will be on assistive technology in the care home setting, and the need to foster secure and efficient communication among care providers. We will discuss these applications in terms of the evolution of the "technological roadmap" for dementia, and the need for a theoretical underpinning for the field, a meaningful and flexible evaluation framework, and consideration of the "wider perspective" including safety-critical issues, ethical issues, and the relation to policy and health economics. CONCLUSIONS: Japan, as a rapidly ageing society, is on the forefront of developing technology to support people with dementia. The new field of psychogeritechnology must harness the potential of such developments, while furthering the methodology to implement and evaluate the changes.

In large-scale engineering plants like nuclear power plants, various anomalies and accidents are usually predicted and efficient measures to minimize the damage from them have been implemented. However, when an unexpected anomaly or accident occurs, operators are asked to take flexible responsive actions to avoid its development to a catastrophic situation and to minimize the influence and damage by the accident. Considering the lessons learned from Fukushima Daiichi accidents, it is important to develop a system to support counter activities by operators and plant staff in an accidental plant condition that is not covered by emergency operating procedures prepared. The purpose of this study is to develop a technique for generating plausible operation procedures under such unexpected emergency situations. The multilevel flow modeling (MFM), a method to represent the functions of components and their relations, is applied as a framework to model functions of components. The technique uses some additional data and knowledge for deriving operation procedures. The applicability of the technique is confirmed by trial operation procedure generations for pressurized water reactor (PWR) loss-of-coolant accident cases with the conditions of some failures of safety systems.

Operation manuals are used to support plant operators in order to reduce human errors and to ensure the quality of operation independent on the skill of operators. However, there are some troubles happened by the causes of problems in operation manuals. The authors analyzed the reported trouble cases happened in petroleum and nuclear industries due to the problems in operation manuals. The analyses revealed that most of the trouble cases were caused by insufficient information in the part of remarks in operation manuals. This means that novice operators need some more information in addition to that of operation purpose and goal, operation step names, the order of operation steps, and concrete operation actions. This study investigates experimentally the influence of insufficient information in the part of remarks on the performance of novice plant operators using an artificial and semi-scaled boiler type power generating plant. Several categories of information described in the part of remarks are identified. Then, two types of operation manuals are prepared. The one describes all information in the part of remarks. Another type has some missing information that may support operators. The experimental results show that the usage of the operation manuals describing all information has much effect to decrease operation risk and the rate of omitting an operation action. However, the operation time to complete a task becomes longer. The results also suggest that sufficient description of the information has little effect on the understanding of operations. This study explores the influence of electronic clinical pathways (ECPs) on nurses' daily activities, especially nursing communication, in a university hospital. Although an electronic clinical pathway enables medical-treatment processes to be standardized by interacting with different occupations, few studies have been conducted from the managerial perspective. We interviewed a doctor in the Department of Medical Information Systems and eight nurses who make entries and use ECPs. The results of the interview indicated that some nurses learned about the medical processes using electronic clinical pathways. The results also showed that the assessment abilities for patient care could decline, if the nurses failed to incorporate the electronic clinical pathways into their daily routines.

Dementia care is becoming increasingly important in Japan as the elderly population grows. Care homes are designed so that caregivers can easily observe and subsequently respond to the needs of people with dementia. However, the layout of care homes can become overly restrictive for residents, for example, by not providing intermediate spaces where people can spontaneously interact and initiate conversations. We present a case study that explores the implementation of video monitoring in two purpose-built care homes in which we were asked to help overcome the blind spots presented by the layout. We collected data both before and after the implementation of the video monitoring in order to understand its effect. The balance between people’s sense of security and the concerns about loss of privacy through video monitoring is well established. However, we found that video monitoring had a beneficial effect on both the caregivers and the residents if implemented sensitively. Furthermore, the implementation of video monitoring could support the design of more beneficial care home layouts. In conclusion, we propose that the sensitive implementation of video monitoring be considered alongside design of the physical layout of care homes.

This article discusses the potential of Captology, a concept of the persuasive technologies, for long-term rehabilitation. Continuous rehabilitations to patients with chronic regional pain syndrome are an essential way to ameliorate the pain. Although the effects on a patient diminish when suspending the rehabilitation, he/she often feels resigned to keep it. Interference factors against the rehabilitation consist of difficulties to recognize the effects from the rehabilitation, interminable and repetitive rehabilitation, and complicated processes involving data collection for providing quality amelioration. Captology is one of promising concepts to solve these problems. We developed a set of functions with four principles from Captology, that is, Praise, Reduction, Tunneling and Self-Monitoring, into the system named VR/MVF for the sake of maintaining patient’s motivation. One of the significant functions was developed to apply the principle of Praise. The system displays messages of praising/scolding to notice appropriate/ inappropriate behaviors to him/her. The principles of Reduction and Tunneling were applied to reduce the burden of the system use. Tracking medical records by the principle of Self-Monitoring was employed to indicate the effects of rehabilitation to the patient.

The number of elderly people in Japan is growing, which raises the issue of dementia, as the probability of becoming cognitively impaired increases with age. There is an increasing need for caregivers, who are well-trained, experienced and can pay special attention to the needs of people with dementia. Technology can play an important role in helping such people and their caregivers. A lack of mutual understanding between caregivers and researchers regarding the appropriate uses of assistive technologies is another problem. A vision of person-centred care based on the use of information and communication technology to maintain residents' autonomy and continuity in their lives is presented. Based on this vision, a roadmap and a list of challenges to realizing assistive technologies have been developed. The roadmap facilitates mutual understanding between caregivers and researchers, resulting in appropriate technologies to enhance the quality of life of people with dementia.

We discuss the influences of electronic clinical pathways (ECPs) as a knowledge management system in a university hospital. We conducted a preliminary study wherein we analyzed records from the use of ECPs and interviewed eight nurses in charge of creating ECPs in their respective departments. We then conducted follow-up interviews with a chief nurse, another nurse, and four technical staffs. We found that constructing ECPs involves creating knowledge to enhance the skills and knowledge of nurse apprentices. In addition, ECPs function as tools for knowledge creation in teams that frequently generate and use them. Nurses can use ECPs to facilitate knowledge transfer from senior colleagues to apprentices through the processes of constructing and operating the ECP.

This paper discusses the incorporation of assistive technologies into dementia care. Dementia care is difficult because it heavily depends on the context, for example, the caregivers involved in dementia care, the persons being cared for, and the devices employed. In the attempt to develop and apply assistive technologies to the real world, the context dependence of dementia care has not been extensively studied. This paper describes two case studies involving a camera system and an RFID slipper system to focus on the issues involved in the development and deployment of assistive technologies. It is important to consider two factors: reduction of system operation costs for caregivers in dealing with multiple tasks and adjustment of the system on the basis of the personal histories of persons with dementia. To prevent unnecessary behavioral changes in persons with dementia and their caregivers, engineers must specifically consider the abovementioned factors during the installation of assistive technologies in the real world.

Practitioners of the Jiro Kawakita (KJ) method, a method for organizing ideas, typically use paper labels and four-colored ball-point pens to record their ideas during the creative thinking process. A similar approach is used in group KJ method sessions; however, the effectiveness of capturing and sharing the diagrams and information is limited because of the large amount of paper required. Considering the merits of the conventional paper-pen approach and the demand for quick sharing of diagrams after a session, we designed and implemented a system to digitize group KJ sessions-not just the diagrams but also the details of the creative process. We used digital pens during the session to capture the position and orientation of labels as well as their content. We confirmed the efficiency of our system by applying it to several GKJ sessions.

A growing number of the elderly with dementia are accommodated to group homes and live with caregivers in Japan. We are concerned with Activities of Daily Living(ADL) of these residents and installed into a group home a sensor network as a pilot study to record and analyze their whereabouts. Twenty one antennas were placed under mats and five residents wore slippers into which Radio Frequency IDentification(RFID) tags were inserted. We collected location data for thirty months and looked for long term tendencies in their activities. We found that the information concerning their whereabouts may indicate their waning health conditions and may reflect caregivers' treatment. We also found a seasonal effect on residents' mobilities, a decline in summer. The result shows that location data may be exploited as a valuable source to recognize residents' slowly changing conditions.

Classrooms for computer-related courses are intrinsically larger than regular lecture rooms because of the existence of installed PCs as well as network and outlet facilities. Some of the previous studies have investigated the effect of students' seat location on their performance, particularly for large class sizes. In this study we examined the effect of seat location in several computer-related courses. We analysed attendance record with seat location, delay caused by tardiness and student score with factors of distance and direction. Two-way ANOVA test revealed the main effect of 'distance' in a large classroom. We also confirmed a weak correlation between the score and the delay. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This study proposes a new concept called a Triage Support Environment based on the authors' research at three care homes. We believe that this study will help develop information and communication technology (ICT) systems for caring for people with dementia (PWD). We installed a video monitoring system for caregivers in three homes and observed the positive and negative effects of applying the system to caregiving. In terms of positive effects, the video monitoring system enabled caregivers to optimize their work and helped them concentrate on their tasks at hand, reducing both mental and physical stresses. On the other hand, some caregivers expressed concerns over being watched by other caregivers through the monitor, especially when their activities were recorded. We discuss these issues and explain how the concept of a Triage Support Environment may lead to a solution for these problems.

In this paper we described the concept of developing an interactive education system and understanding the actual activity inside the classroom. We developed an Anoto-based digital pen system and conducted a case study on three mathematics lectures in a high school, with participatory observation. After these practice lectures, focus group interviews were scheduled for the students in addition to a separate interview with a teacher; these interviews revealed the effects of our system. We concluded from the series of the investigations that the system was able to enhance interactive area of individual students, increase the transparency of class activities, raise students' motivation levels, and fortify the educational effects. Finally, a "stage" concept was generated from these results.

We have been experimenting with Anoto-Pens to immediately monitor the progress of all students during a lecture. In our previous experiments, the teacher had to determine, in advance, the mapping between student seat positions and his/her digital pen IDs. To resolve this issue, we propose an instant seat-mapping method utilizing student signatures. When a student writes his/her name on a mapping sheet, the system connects the student's seating position with the pen ID. We confirmed the effectiveness of this method by conducting an experimental lecture at an elementary school. Our method was found effective even while teaching younger schoolchildren. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we analyze problems involved in the development and installation of a camera system to care for persons with dementia (PWD) through an action research carried out at three group homes. We interviewed sixteen caregivers to investigate the effects on their work caused by the system and found that their work stress had been reduced. We noticed that the camera system plays an important role in the environment for supporting PWD and removing anxieties of caregivers. We also realized that there is a trade-off between protecting their privacies and making the place securable.

Typically, practitioners of the KJ method use paper labels and four-colored ball-point pens to externalize their thoughts and ideas during the process. A similar approach and method is used in group KJ lessons. However, due to the large paper size required, this approach is limited in effective capturing and sharing of outcomes. Considering the merits of the conventional paper-pen approach and the demand for quick sharing of outcomes after the session, we designed and implemented a system to digitize the group KJ session-not just the outcomes but also the details of the creative work processes. We use digital pens to capture position and orientation of labels, as well as their contents, during the session. We confirmed the efficiency of our system with several KJ sessions.

We propose Anchor Garden (AG), an interactive workbench software for learning fundamentals of data structures with the concepts of type, variable, object, and their relations in a strongly typed object-oriented programming language (OOPL) such as Java or C#. Learners can approach the basic data-handling concepts of OOPLs by direct manipulation of graphical models in AG. In addition, the learner can correlate his/her manipulation and notation of source code because AG automatically generates appropriate source-code corresponding to this manipulation. Experimental results showed a tendency of a learning effect with AG and high correlations between concept understanding and programming ability. Thus, AG has the potential to enhance the programming ability of novice programmers.

We have been developing an RFID (radio frequency identification) mat system to assist caregivers in a group home. In Japan, the number of group homes offering home-like care for elderly persons suffering from dementia has increased considerably. Even though the smaller number of people residing in a group home makes it suitable for family-like care, the scarcity of caregivers increases the burden, especially during the night. To augment caregiver attention, we developed floor mats with embedded RFID antennae and slippers with RFID tags. These can help caregivers be aware of the activities of persons suffering from dementia by specifying whether an individual has passed over a mat in a particular corridor. This not only helps the caregivers understand such persons by reviewing their activities but also keeps them informed about their current activities. We introduced the floor mats in a real group home and confirmed the feasibility of the system. In this study, we describe the system and lessons learned from our experiment. © 2009 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

A lot of researches and developments related to the ubiquitous technology for nursing have been conducted. However, According to the philosophy of valley of death (Wessener, 2001) and Darwinian Sea (Branscomb, et al., 2002), laboratories results cannot be implemented directly into the real world. Recently person-centerd care (Takatsuka, et al., 2005) is paid to attention, but that is different from the human centered design (ISO13407, 1999) in an ubiquitous ...

This paper discusses the issue of users' retrieval strategies in relation to development of a kansei-based music retrieval system. Little attention has been paid to this issue in this research area, even though it is important to build such systems. To study this issue, we performed two experiments regarding users' strategies for retrieving desired tunes using kansei-based music retrieval interface. Twenty-three subjects expressed their selections using two input methods in random order. One is uses all 19 pairs of kansei words. We call it a "passive selection". The other method allows selection of preferred kansei settings from among the 19 pairs. We call it an "active selection". It was found from the results that users' retrieval strategies were influenced by selection methods. Moreover, the results indicate the rating of midrange inputs is not very important factor for users in the music information retrieval.

We investigated the effects of the prototype, which consists of several cameras and monitors, by interviewing eleven caregivers. We found that the prototype system not only helps the caregivers to watch out the people with dementia but also removes some stress caused by taking excessive precaution to residents' behaviors. Caregivers however reported sonic concerns to the violation of privacy as for the caregivers themselves and the residents alike.

We have been developing a mimamori-care system to monitor persons with dementia (PWD) in group homes based on the real world-oriented approach. This approach is devised by the expansion of a creativity-supported framework between researchers and caregivers. A new finding was acquired from a joint collaboration of the opinion of caregivers and the insight of researchers. Initially, several technical problems were solved in the virtual group home laboratory at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Subsequently, we introduced the system into a real group home, and at present, we continue to improve the system by analyzing the daily events at the site. Some useful effects of this system in dementia care have already been revealed; hence, caregivers can intervene in the problems faced by PWDs on time, and they can support PWD's independence without engaging in excessive care.

We aim to select several pairs of kansei words for use in a kansei-based music retrieval system. In order to evaluate kansei for music, we collected 530 kansei words from music magazines and a related work. Forty pairs of kansei words were selected out of them according to the results of 2 questionnaires. Using the those pairs, we conducted an evaluation test in which 76 subjects listened to 12 pieces of instrumental music through stereo speakers, and they rated the degree of their impression on each piece based on the 7-level semantic differential method. Factor analysis revealed that the psychological space of impressions was composed of 8 factors: There were uplift, mosso and so on. Next, we conducted simulation of retrieving. It was shown that many subjects often used 8 pair of kansei words for system input. Finally, we selected 19 pairs of kansei words, which were important to build a kansei-based music retrieval system

This study analyzes the factors for detecting agents to implement a human-like agent in werewolf games, which are new themes in game studies of artificial intelligence. A comparative experiment was conducted to reveal the influences regarding the degree of disclosure of the agent existence; seven players and an agent participated in four games. Communication logs were collected from the game logs. Impressions for each player was reported in questionnaires with five-point scales and detection of the agent were reported in a free writing. Although the most players, who did not know that an agent played the games, did not be aware of the true character of the agent, the most players who knew the existence could detect the agent. The statements of detected agents differed from them of other players. This study concludes that the technical requirement for agents is to adapt to statements of other players.

This paper describes the role of the story as a boundary object in the initial phase of research using an action research of development and deployment of assistive technologies carried out at several care houses. In the previous study, a &quot;stage&quot; concept was generated from interview results. As a result, it was found that story elicits grasp of knowledge between caregivers and a system implementer, and facilitates discussion about vision for the future of the system. It was concluded that story has a possibility of functioning as a boundary object effectively.

Caregivers: Challenges, Practices and Cultural Influences   225 - 242   2013.12

     More details

This article discusses potential role of assistive technologies for dementia care. Despite urgent needs for person-centered care, it is difficult for care houses in Japan to achieve it because of a lack of resources and fatigue caused by the shortage of funds and caregivers. Assistive technologies for dementia care are fruitful in helping care work. However, little attention has been focused on the influence of these technologies on person-centered care. To investigate effects of assistive technologies on the care house, we installed a video monitoring system for caregivers in three homes and observed the effects of applying the system to caregiving by interviews and video observations. As results, the video monitoring system enabled caregivers to optimize their work and helped them concentrate on their tasks at hand, reducing both mental and physical stresses. Finally, we established the concept of a triage support environment, which can augment dementia care. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

In light of the ongoing transformation from a traditional industrial society to a post-industrial society as a service society, it is unquestionably required to improve efficiency and quality of services. Especially, we focus on physical and adaptive intelligent services (PAI services) like nursing and caregiving where efficiency and quality are critical for an aging society. In these PAI services, several people have to collaborate to provide services, and a collaboration support system would be necessary. This paper proposes an information supervisory control model for a collaboration support system; furthermore, we have developed a smart voice messaging system based on this model. This model has a hypothesis that appropriate information sharing based on awareness of clients situation and task processes can be utilized and effective for improving efficiency and quality of services. We then formulate several hypotheses including the above one to be examined through field tests, virtual field tests, and simulation from the perspective of information supervisory control, and show some preliminary experimental results.

Various manuals are used for plant operations and maintenance for plants. Adequate employment of manuals enables to decrease human errors in the workplace, and to ensure the quality of operator's/worker's performance not to heavily rely on the expertise of them. Inadequate information on manuals, however, sometimes provokes human errors. For example, it is difficult for skilled operators/workers to grasp the points of manuals if the manuals describe as over-detailed. They may be hard to recognize the information slightly different from the one that he/she acquires in his/her long experiences of the tasks. On the other hand, a novice operator or worker will make human errors if he/she uses a manual with rough descriptions of tasks because it may be difficult to understand the tasks due to his/her little knowledge and experiences for the tasks. Therefore, the information type of operation manuals should change depending on the knowledge and experiences of operators and workers for the tasks. This study experimentally investigates the relations among performance of tasks, information type of operation manuals, and skill level of operators. The results suggest that an operation manual describing concrete recovery actions for a task step by step will suit for a novice operator, while a skilled operator can use effectively the information of operation goal. © 2013 IEEE.

The development of radio frequency identi?cation (RFID) technology makes it possible to track the daily activities of residents when installed in a residential home. We studied what valuable information can be extracted from location data of the daily activities of residents collected over several years. We installed antennas into a group home housing six people with dementia and asked them to wear slippers into which RFID tags were inserted. Data was collected over thirty months. We found a seasonal trend with all residents but one person who was wheel-chaired. For example, their activity level was lowered during summer. We identi?ed a resident whose activity was in rapid decline three months prior to her death. For another resident who fell down, we identi?ed a rapid decline in activity decline a week prior to the incident. Both also showed a change in their behavioral patterns. Long-term data collection is useful for assessing residents&#039; health conditions. With sufficient data, we can detect abnormalities.

This paper proposes a method of project management knowledge transfer in order to increase the success probability of R&D projects. Our method consists of knowledge externalization and knowledge internalization. "Structured project analysis" is a method of knowledge externalization that reviews a finished project and produces a structured project case. "Internalization workshop" is a method enabling managers to internalize the project management knowledge based on the analogical transfer approach. The method selects success and failure scenarios (future chance and risk items) from the structured project cases that have some similarities to the ongoing target project. Then, the method prompts the managers to imagine and analyze future scenarios of their target project by analogy and take action concerning them. We apply this method to an ongoing business-academia collaborative project in which Toshiba, Shimizu Corporation, and the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) are developing an innovative healthcare information system. We qualitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed knowledge transfer method and show how to fill the project management knowledge gaps among project team members drawn from business and academia.

A growing number of people are now entering the 'elderly' age category in Japan; this raises the likelihood of more persons with dementia, as the probability of becoming cognitively impaired increases with age. There is an increasing need for caregivers who are well trained and experienced and who can pay special attention to the needs of people with dementia. Technology can play an important role in helping such people and their caregivers. A lack of mutual understanding between caregivers and researchers regarding the appropriate uses of assistive technologies is another problem. We have described the relationship between information and communication technology (ICT), especially assistive technologies, and social issues as a first step towards developing a technology roadmap.

On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake struck northeastern Japan and triggered the devastating tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster. A number of IT engineers collaborated and launched websites and web services to assist the victims immediately the quake. One of the major websites was sinsai.info in which hundreds of volunteers participated. Even though the sinsai.info project was the loosely coupled volunteer community, it rapidly solved numerous unanticipated problems which occurred one after another in the project. This paper aims to clarify the reason why people collaborated efficiently and solved the problems quickly even in the loosely coupled community. We analyzed communication logs in the community from the aspect of knowledge management. We discovered the important role of communication channels in knowledge management.

In this paper, we describe an improvement to AirTransNote, a student note-sharing system that facilitates collaborative and interactive learning during a regular lecture in conventional classrooms. The former AirTransNote system employed ultrasonic pens and PDAs for collecting student notes on paper sheets. However, this process required special skills and posed difficulties for learners. We then introduced Anoto-based pens to reduce these difficulties, and compared this with the former system during experimental lectures. We confirmed that the simplicity and stability of the Anoto-based pen facilitates active participation of low-performing students, while high-performing students felt less uneasy about the system checking their notes. The original system also required teachers to manage the relationship between a pen ID, a learner, and a seat position. To resolve this difficulty, we developed an instant sheet-mapping method. This method utilizes learners&#039; signatures on a special seat-map sheet, and dynamically relates the pen IDs and the seat positions with the signatures. We conducted an experimental lecture session at an elementary school, and confirmed that this method functio

Internet services such as Twitter have emerged, and ordinary users are able to publish user-generated content that may involve primary information. User-generated content has begun to serve as an alternative to traditional information media. Since the content generated by users on Twitter is not always accurate, conventional information media therefore views its existing quality as inferior. However, user-generated content is gradually depriving conventional information media of its role with regard to being the exclusive provider of primary information. As a result, we regard and refer to Twitter as a Disruptive Technology that is leading to the displacement of traditional information media.
As a consequence of the popularity of Twitter, conventional information media has resorted to exploiting the user-generated information existing on Twitter as a source of news through becoming involved in the Media Ecosystem. Traditional information media have begun to communicate more with users to the extent that it may be able to strengthen its role as a secondary information provider. The conventional forms of information media may also be able to help in dealing with certain unforeseen social problems. We view this as a trend that is set to continue with the conventional information media moving toward a more service based economy.

Traditional research on competitive intelligence has not distinguished products from services clearly. In adjacent research areas, however, discussions about intersections and differences between products and services are very active. Affected by this trend, this paper conducted a single case study to explore differences between competitive intelligence of telecommunication service and traditional competitive intelligence by analyzing how NTT viewed its competitive environment at the emergence of the Internet. We found that one of unique characteristics exhibited by this case is intelligence on the value network proposed by Christensen, and analyzed that intelligence in contrast to technology intelligence. As a result, we developed two hypotheses: (1) technology intelligence and intelligence on the value network can be handled independently, (2) when a given firm is not far behind in technology, intelligence on the value network can be a source of competitive advantage.

In Japan, a group home becomes popular as a care service facility for elderly persons who suffer from dementia. The caregivers working in the group home must always pay attention to such persons. We have developed a flexible RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) antenna mat system to assist caregivers in a group home. In this article, we present the design, implementation of the system, and lessons learned from an operation. Besides, we argue that the interactions among caregivers, elderly persons with dementia, and the system.

After the Long Tail was proposed by Chris Anderson in 2004, people started believing his theory that internet services, such as Amazon.com, can achieve great success in retailing. Internet stores can sell enormous numbers of books, comics, CDs, and DVDs and make great profits through the reduction in distribution costs that is achieved through this medium. Despite the fact that mobile internet retail is on equal terms with retail through PCs, the properties and modes of usage of a mobile phone, which strongly influence the purchasing aspect, have not been considered as the Long Tail of mobile retail. In this paper, therefore, we have discussed whether the Long Tail of mobile internet retail is profitable, especially in connection with mobile manga sales. Three series of researches were conducted in this study: a Pareto analysis for mobile manga sales, two focus group and individual interviews on how to use and purchase mobile manga, and a field experiment to determine the influence of distributors' recommender systems. The results we found were that when users searched for novel titles, they did not devote sufficient time toward retrieving the same and mostly depended on best seller rankings. We thus concluded that the Long Tail of mobile manga sales has few prospects of profitability.

We have been developing a cooperative care system for people with dementia in Group Home. Japan is running towards super-aged society. A lot of researches and developments related to the ubiquitous technology for nursing have been conducted. However, According to the philosophy of valley of death (Wessener, 2001) and Darwinian Sea (Branscomb, et al., 2002), laboratories results cannot be implemented directly into the real world. Recently person-centerd care (Takatsuka, et al., 2005) is paid to attention, but that is different from the human centered design (ISO13407, 1999) in an ubiquitous research. As for the research of the past, easiness to use and originality are valued. The care for people with dementia depends on context, and it is difficult to quantify. But in this research, we stepped into the essence of nursing. We are advancing the design, development, introduction and operation by the collaboration of needs and seeds. We named this process the world aim approach. We used this approach, and implement our system in real Group Home facility. The effective outcomes of this research had been brought into light. The nurser is giving a good evaluation for this system, such as the system keeps the balance of independence and caring and the efficiency improvement of care work.

We aim to clarify the requirements for the mimamori-care system in the group home to support caregivers who take care of persons with dementia (PWD).

We propose a concept of care-giving, in which we utilize a video camera to monitor activities of people with dementia in group home. One of the most important issues concerns the privacy of both care-givers and residents in group home. The second issue concerns the workload of care-givers and the way we remove some of them. The third issue concerns the acquisition of skill for care-givings, which is especially required for care-givers with less experiences, compared with experts. We discuss m...

We proposed a music retrieval system on the basis of an individual kansei trait, and its learning of individual kansei traits and an experiment for evaluating its music retrieval performance were described. The system consists of a neural network (NN) that becomes to transform any individual's kansei characteristics to a standard one through learning and a musical database (MD) that presents tunes matching to a key kansei value. A kansei vector whose elements were subjective evaluation ratings on 40 kansei word pairs represented an individual's kansei to a specific tune, and his/her kansei trait was characterized by a kansei space that had his/her kansei vectors corresponding to many tunes. The results of an experiment showed that NNs could currently learn transformation from individual kansei spaces to the standard one. Although many tunes were not contained in the MD, 74% of the subjects were suited with the results of the system's retrieval. It was also shown that the m-RIK was more useful than the system without the NN.

A mixed method based on interview and questionnaire was conducted with a group of facilities involved in the transitional care of the elderly from a university hospital to a nursing home. It was shown that the lack of knowledge and understanding on both sides of information sharing between hospitals and care homes and the lack of sufficient resources were potentially causes to seamless collaboration. Analysis of the medical records also showed that there was a lack of information regarding collaboration. Although the recognition of information sharing was consistent between the hospitals and care homes, staff on both sides could not fully transmit due to the immaturity of the means and tools for information sharing. In the future, the development of technology to support the understanding of the situation in each facility is indicated to solve the lack of information in addition to medical information.

The developed sensor network to grasp the behavior of the care recipient was enabled to detect call actions to care staff with a high accuracy rate (F value: 89.6%). We also developed a learned model that can discriminate the sign of begin-to-talk actions based on coordinate data of characteristics points of the person (the precision ratio: 81%). The method will be useful to estimate the physical and mental condition of care recipients. Finally, we implemented a robot that can nod at an appropriate time in a conversation (accuracy rate: 98%). The robot is expected to become to appropriately intervene with the conversation among care recipients and caregivers.

We studied the following engineering methods. That is, by tracing the remaining memory of demented persons and discovering the difference in recognition of the real world of the person with dementia and the care giver, understanding and sharing of the care giver to the person with dementia will be promoted. First, we examined a method to discover the cause of discrepancy, such as lack of memory of the person with dementia by using computer reasoning technique such as abduction etc. Next, we researched and developed the technology to automatically and continuously record the daily life of a demented person in a nursing home care facility, and to construct a personal story in the database. Then, the communication robot draws behaviors that represent the feelings of dementia people, and the mobile robot records the person's expression at that time. Finally, we developed the method to utilize that record for new memory formation leading to the happiness of the person with dementia.

Through an action research by an interdisciplinary team in cooperation with medical professionals at the Miyazaki University Hospital, where smartphones have been used along with electronic medical records, we built a theoretical model of knowledge management for clinical medicine to explain how medical professionals share and utilize a variety of data, information, and knowledge, thereby creating their clinical knowledge in a ubiquitous information environment. Also, based on analyses and evaluations of data on usage of smartphones, we made a practical guideline for the knowledge management of clinical medicine that enhances quality and safety of medical services by using smartphones.

We have developed a method to collect and analyse behavioural data taken of the residents at care houses. The result suggest that falling out can be predicted and the start of terminal period can be detected by analysing the behavioural data. Our finding will help us to improve the quality of life for the elderly. We also noticed that care houses vary in many respects and it is yet to be known how universal our findings are by looking into more cases.
Concerning the prediction of caregivers' behaviours, we found that they are more in interested in developing better ways for approaching to the elderly rather than knowing what they are doing. The issue will be looked into for future projects.
