Abstract

In conventional nanoscale characterization of elastomers by atomic force microscopy (AFM), analysis of the obtained force curve data has typically been conducted using elastic contact mechanics with adhesion. However, polymeric materials are essentially viscoelastic and show hysteresis. To address this issue, viscoelastic theories have been proposed, which incorporate the speed-dependent adhesion that originates from the viscoelasticity at the contact edge. In this framework, the standard linear solid (SLS) model has been commonly employed, which is insufficient to describe more complex behavior and limits its applicability to practical polymeric systems. Here, we extended viscoelastic contact mechanics by introducing a fractional viscoelastic model to capture a broader spectrum of relaxation behaviors. Force curves of several elastomers with different glass transition temperatures were analyzed, and the potential to extract a viscoelastic parameter that represents the distribution of the relaxation time from a single force curve was demonstrated.

    Abstract

Nanorheological atomic force microscopy (AFM) enables us to measure nano-scale frequency-dependent dynamic moduli by oscillating the cantilever with a wide range of frequencies. However, the storage and loss moduli converted from dynamic stiffness obtained by nanorheological AFM with the contact area calculated by Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) contact mechanics, which is for elastic bodies with adhesion, exhibit difference compared to those by macroscopic dynamic mechanical analysis due to the different contact areas depending on frequencies. Herein, we modified one of the viscoelastic contact mechanics considering the extent of the relaxation of the bulk deformation, which was disregarded in the original theory, to improve the quantitative accuracy of the contact area. The modification was verified by several experiments. By implementing the theory, we successfully quantified frequency-dependent contact areas, and the nano-scale dynamic moduli by nanorheological AFM showed a better agreement with the macroscopic moduli.

    Abstract

Using atomic force microscope-based nanomechanics to measure the micromechanical properties of different polymer blends, we found that the miscibility of the blend system affects the phase structure and micromechanical properties at the nanoscale, which further affects macroscopic mechanical properties of materials. In the immiscible polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene rubber blends, the microscopic phase structure is connected to the macroscopic mechanical properties of the material, since the microscopic modulus of elasticity of the phases remains constant even if the blend ratio is changed. On the other hand, in the partially miscible polypropylene/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer blends, the macroscopic mechanical properties of the material are determined by the combination of the microscopic phase structure and the microscopic elastic modulus, because the microscopic elastic modulus of each phase changes with the blending ratio.

    Abstract

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is considered an advanced tool for microscopic study of materials study due to its capabilities for nanoscale spatial characterization. Over the past two decades, the AFM-based nanomechanical characterization technique has been extensively used to investigate the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of polymeric materials. This technique enables direct visualization of the micromechanical properties of material surfaces and is referred to as the AFM nanomechanics technique. This review discusses the application of this technique in the study of polymer composites with a specific focus on the significant advances made in tracking the microscopic deformation behavior and visualizing the microscopic stress distributions of materials.

Conjugated polymer chains in compact conformations or in films exhibit spectral features that can be attributed to interactions between individual conjugated segments of the chain, including formation of aggregates or excimers. Here, we use atomic force microscopy (AFM) on single chains of the conjugated polymer polyfluorene (PFO) to control the intersegment interactions by mechanically unfolding the chain. Simultaneously with the force spectroscopy we monitor fluorescence from the single PFO chains using a fluorescence microscope. We found that mechanical stretching of the chain causes disappearance of the green emission band. This observation provides evidence that the green emission originates from an intrachain aggregated state on the self-folded chain, which is decoupled by the stretching. In addition, the stretching upon laser irradiation leads to the appearance of additional features in the force spectra, small force peaks in the initial stages of the unfolding. These features are attributed to a combination of excitonic and van der Waals coupling of a ground-state intrachain aggregate.

Nanomechanics based on atomic force microscope (AFM) is reviewed. Tapping-mode phase imaging gives information of energy dissipative process during the contact between AFM probe and elastic or viscoelastic surface, which includes adhesive interaction as well as viscoelastic loss. The understanding of time-temperature superposition principle is crucial to interpret the data correctly. AFM nanomechanics based on “slow” force-distance curve analysis can also offer a lot of insights on materials' mechanical properties. Young's modulus, adhesive force and viscoelastic work can be imaged. The paper devotes AFM analysis of block copolymer-type thermoplastic elastomer, in order to interconnect nanoscopic information and macroscopic mechanical properties evaluation, in which a new mathematical approach, computational homology may play an important role.
