The catalytic reduction of CO2 into value-added chemicals has become important in recent years, and a catalyst that is efficient, nontoxic, and inexpensive is highly demanded. In particular, room still exists for exploring mixed-anion compounds as new catalysts. Here, we show that the Zn-based mixed-anion compounds Zn(OH)(NO3) and Zn3(OH)4(NO3)2, which were formed on the surface of Al2O3 using Zn(NO3)2·6H2O as the precursor, can convert CO2 into HCOOH with >80% selectivity in the presence of a Ru(II) photosensitizer and 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydro-nicotinamide as an electron donor under visible light (λ = 460 nm). Single-anion compounds such as ZnO and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O do not show activity under the same conditions. The mixed-anion phases are thus shown to be active species for CO2-to-HCOOH conversion, and a turnover number greater than 1 was confirmed for HCOOH generation. However, the Zn-based mixed-anion phases were not stable during consecutive runs because the catalyst component eluted into the reaction solution.

The amount of incorporation of linear alcohols and ethers in H4SiW12O40·6H2O (HSiW·6H2O, 50 wt %) supported on silica (SiO2) was estimated by a conventional volumetric method and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and the state of involved molecules was elucidated. First, the attribution of the key IR band at 2200 cm-1, which was observed for the water of crystallization of HSiW·6H2O, to H5O2+ species (protons) was verified by coincident observation of thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and IR spectroscopy during thermal treatment in addition to the isotope exchange with D2O. The 2200 cm-1 band was gradually decreased in intensity by increasing the amount of adsorption of pyridine and was totally consumed at saturation, while the volumetric method provided the accurate number of included pyridine molecules. Thus, the decrease of the integrated intensity of the 2200 cm-1 band was employed to evaluate the extent of interaction of linear alcohols and ethers with H5O2+ species in equilibrium and irreversible conditions at room temperature. Linear alcohols (C1-C5) consumed almost all protons in equilibrium and about 50% in evacuation at room temperature, while about a half of protons were interacted in equilibrium and a quarter in evacuation in the case of dimethyl and diethyl ethers. Knowing the number of molecules incorporated and the amount of H5O2+ species consumed, the ratio of interacted molecules and H5O2+ species was estimated as H5O2+:molecules = 1:2-3. XRD patterns indicated the copresence of molecule-incorporated and molecule-free domains under irreversible conditions. Therefore, the incorporated molecules were concentrated around the H5O2+ species in HSiW·6H2O crystals. The state of absorbed molecules in HSiW·6H2O crystals was presumed by IR spectra: the presence of Fermi resonance of the hydrogen-bonded OH stretching band of H5O2+ species with CH deformation bands of interacted molecules implied the equilibrium state of as-interacted molecules and protonated species (transition state) at room temperature.

The construction of aluminosilicates from versatile molecular precursors (MPs) represents a promising alternative strategy to conventional processes based on monomeric molecular or polymeric Al and Si sources. However, the use of MPs often suffers from drawbacks such as the decomposition of the core structures in the presence of solvents, acids, or bases. In this work, we demonstrate a simple thermal synthesis of porous aluminosilicates from single-source spiro-7-type MPs that consist of a tetrahedral Al atom and six Si atoms functionalized with 12 phenyl (Ph) groups, (C+)[Al{Ph2Si(OSiPh2O)2}2]- (C+[AlSi6]-; C+ = pyridinium cation (PyH+), Na+, K+, Rb+, or Cs+), without using a solvent or activator. Microporous aluminosilicates synthesized via the thermal treatment of C+[AlSi6]- under a 79% N2 + 21% O2 atmosphere exhibited extremely low carbon contents (0.10-1.28%), together with Si/Al ratios of 3.9-6.7 ± 0.2 and surface areas of 103.1-246.3 m2/g. The solid-state 27Al and 29Si MAS NMR spectra suggest that the obtained aluminosilicates with alkali cations retain a tetrahedral Al site derived from the spiro-7-type core structure. After a proton-exchange reaction, the aluminosilicates showed almost 1.5 times higher reactivity in the catalytic ring-opening of styrene oxide than the aluminosilicate before proton exchange due to the catalytically active OH site being predominantly bridged by tetrahedral Al and Si atoms. These results suggest that the present MP strategy is a promising method for the introduction of key structures into active inorganic materials.

Acidity of zeolite was evaluated by FT-IR such as CO, pyridine adsorption. However, temperature of these methods are lower than those for practical reaction temperatures. In this study, we purposed evaluating acidity of zeolite and focused protonation enthalpy of zeolite. Whereat, we calculated protonation enthalpy of zeolite, examined effect of framework types and temperatures.

It isrecently well recognized that the location of acid sites in the zeolitic poresaffects the activity. To balance the charge in the silica framework, Al3+species are located near cations including inorganic cations, e.g., Na+,K+ and/or organic ones, such as quaternary ammonium ions, e.g.,tetrapropylammonium cation (TPA+). Hence, the number of the cations affects the Al content, and the location of Al atoms may be dependent on their size and type.

To develop a new class of ZSM-5 catalyst with the location of Al atoms in the pores controlled, ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using bulky organic alcohols. The location of Al atoms was evaluated by high resolution 27Al MAS and MQMAS NMR techniques. The constraint index (CI) has been also applied to estimate the distribution of acidic sites in the micropores. The use of these bulky organic alcohols led to the ZSM-5 with Al atoms preferentially located at straight and sinusoidal channels. The catalytic life of thus prepared ZSM-5 catalysts for the methanol to olefins reaction was dramatically improved.

The catalytic performances of titanosilicates, TS-1, Ti-beta and Ti-MWW, in the oxidation of glycerol were investigated. TS-1 exhibited the highest conversion of glycerol among the titanosilicates used and gave a higher selectivity to dihydroxyacetone than glyceraldehydes. By the oxidations of C3-based alcohols 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1,2-propandiol and 1,3-propandiol as a control, TS-1 preferentially oxidized the secondary -OH group, not primary -OH group, in the three -OH groups of glycerol.

The catalytic properties of aluminosilicate zeolites depend on many factors such as the pore structure, acid strength, and acid amounts. Among them, the acidic properties originate from the presence of protons balancing the negative charge induced by the framework Al atoms in tetrahedral sites (T sites). Recently, the distribution of Al atoms in the zeolite framework has been recognized as an important factor for activity and selectivity. Among diverse zeolite catalysts, we have tackled the control of the distribution of Al atoms in the MFI-type and CHA-type aluminosilicate zeolites, which has been widely used as a solid acid catalyst in petrochemical catalytic processes and also in the methanol conversion process.

The goal of this study is to create new chiral microporous crystals, i.e. chiral zeolites. I have tried to hydrothermally synthesize Beta Zeolite in the presence of chiral structure-directing agents. To achieve the goal, I have applied three strategies below. Strategy 1: Synthesis of Beta zeolite with chiral additives under OSDA-free-like conditions. Strategy 2 : Synthesis of Beta zeolite by HF method in the presence of chiral ammonium salts. Strategy 3: Post-synthetic conversion of polymorphic pure-silica Beta zeolite into monomorphic ones in the presence of chiral amine molecules.
Through this study, unfortunately, I did not succeed in perfectly preparing novel chiral zeolites. However, thus obtained findings is very useful for further research regarding chiral microporous crystals.

I have developed a novel and simple liquid-phase method for forming uniform-sized silica nanospheres (SNSs) about 8-550 nm in size. Interestingly, the arrangement of SNSs into the cubic closed packed (ccp) structure was achieved simply by solvent evaporation. The thus-formed colloidal array of SNSs has three-dimensional, interparticle voids with high uniformity of size, and can be categorized into well-ordered mesoporous silica.
I prepared mesoporous SnO2 via the hard-templating method by using the carbon replica of SNSs as a template. I also studied on the synthesis of the colloidal array of Ti-containing zeolitic SNSs (Ti-ZSNSs) by directly crystallizing the colloidal array of SNSs/carbon composite in the presence of a Ti source and TEAOH.

The catalytic properties of aluminosilicate-type zeolites depend on many factors such as pore structure, acid strength and acid amounts. In addition these factors, the location of Al atoms in the zeolite framework has been recognized as an important factor for activity and selectivity, because they would profoundly affect the accessibility of molecules to acid sites and the spatial constraints of the reaction field in the pores; however, their control and evaluation have been difficult to achieve.
In this study, In-situ FT-IR spectroscopy using CO as probe molecule was applied to the evaluation of acid property of the ZSM-5 zeolites. The effects of the organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) and Na cation for the synthesis of ZSM-5 on the location of Al atom in the framework as well as acidic properties and catalytic properties were investigated. I have developed a method for evaluating the location of Al atoms by high resolution 27Al MAS and MQMAS NMR techniques.

A liquid-phase method for preparing uniform-sized silica nanospheres(SNSs) 12 nm in size and their three-dimensionally ordered arrangement upon solvent evaporation have recently been pioneered by us. Firts, the successful control of the sphere sizes in the wide range from 14 to 550 nm has been achieved by the seed regrowth method. The confined space synthesis method using the colloidar array of silica nanospheres has been applied to the preparation of sodium tantalate(NaTaO_3); hydrothermal reaction of NaOH and Ta_2O_5 was carried out in the pores of three-dimensional mesoporous carbon, which was replicated by the colloidal array of silica nanospheres(SNSs) 20 nm in size. Trimethylsilylated Ti-containing mesoporous silica nanospheres(Ti-MSNSs) have been successfully prepared. The trimethylsilylation improved a hydrophobicity of the material with its morphology and the coordination of Ti species intact. Thus prepared trimethylsilylated Ti-MSNSs exhibited a higher catalytic performance in the epoxidations of various bulky olefins

In this research project, investigation on zeolite precursors during the stages of nucleation and crystal growth is performed at the level of atomic scale by means of various in situ characterization techniques. The formation process of zeolite crystals is recognized here as a kind of reaction network.
As for the clarification of zeolite precursors, generation of ring structures which are composed of hetero-atoms such as oxides of Si, Al, and/or other metals, and the roles of alkali metals in the generation were focused on. High-Energy X-Ray Diffraction (HEXRD) is utilized for the investigation of ring structures of aluminosilicate species involved in the formation process of zeolites. We could clarify by the tool the critical roles of hetero-atoms on the ring species and of alkali metals on the assembly of the rings. We could successfully lead the conclusion that introduction of Al into the ring structure decreased the proportional contribution of odd-numbered rings, and the addition of Zn enhanced the formation of three-membered ring. It is noted that the ring number distribution is already determined in the amorphous phase of reactant aluminosilicate hydrogel prior to crystallization to each zeolitic phase. In the successive stage, nucleation and growth, we concluded that three kinds of particles of primary and secondary units and crystal exist in the aqueous phase of solution, by our original contribution using Small Angle X-ray Scattering(SAXS)-Wide Angle X-ray Scattering(WAXS) in situ measurement. We finally proposed a whole schematic process of crystallization of zeolite through these explorations.
We also succeeded to obtain much smaller nano-crystal of zeolite than previously reported, owing to the knowledge obtained above. In this method, nano-crystals at higher concentration were achieved to crystallize without addition of organic additives, which are conventionally accepted as an indispensable reagent for such a type of nano-crystal.
