    Abstract

A large superconducting machine, JT-60SA has been constructed to provide major contributions to the ITER program and DEMO design. For the success of the ITER project and fusion reactor, understanding and development of plasma controllability in ITER and DEMO relevant higher beta regimes are essential. JT-60SA has focused the program on the plasma controllability for scenario development and risk mitigation in ITER as well as on investigating DEMO relevant regimes. This paper summarizes the high research priorities and strategy for the JT-60SA project. Recent works on simulation studies to prepare the plasma physics and control experiments are presented, such as plasma breakdown and equilibrium controls, hybrid and steady-state scenario development, and risk mitigation techniques. Contributions of JT-60SA to ITER and DEMO have been clarified through those studies.

Stability and force equilibrium of toroidal helical coil with circular cross section were investigated. In this paper, we derived and calculated equations for equilibrium of toroidal helical coil based on an axisymmetric surface current model. The helical coil, which is modulated in such a way that a magnetic surface coincides with the coil surface, can reduce overturning force generated by electromagnetic forces. We analyzed the stability of the toroidally modulated helical coil and confirmed that this modulated configuration is held in equilibrium while it is unstable. This condition means the minimum inductance condition. Moreover, we formulated the relationships between electromagnetic forces and stresses acting on toroidal helical coil with circular cross section, and we compared the stress distributions calculated by the equations with those from finite element method (FEM) analysis.

Studies on the loss of fusion produced alpha particles enhanced by toroidal field (TF) ripple in a low-aspect-ratio tokamak reactor (VECTOR) have been made by using an orbit-following Monte-Carlo code. In actual TF coil systems, the ripple loss of alpha particles is strongly reduced as the aspect ratio becomes low (the power loss is proportional to A8.8 for A>˜2.5) and the reduction of the number of TF coils results in a large amount of ripple losses even in a low-aspect-ratio tokamak. Judging from the allowable peak heat load on the first wall (≈1MW/m2) due to loss particles, the number of TF coils of VECTOR can be reduced fro 12 to 10 without changing the coil size, and in addition, the number can be reduced to 8 with ferrite plates. To reduce the number of TF coils from 12 to 6, about 40% of coil size enlargement is necessary. By using ferrite plates, the coil size enlargement for N=6 can be reduced to about 15%.

The energy dependence of the diffusion coefficients of α particles in rippled fields of tokamaks is numerically investigated with an orbit-following Monte Carlo code. The diffusion coefficients are enhanced around the ripple resonance energy while they are not so much enhanced in the neighborhood of it. Consequently, they have a local minimum near the resonance energy, and hence they have an M-shaped energy dependence. Ripple resonance is caused by a radial change of the toroidal precession of banana particles, and creates islands in (Nφ, ψ) phase space. Since particles outside the separatrix are the main contributors to diffusion enhancement, the M-shaped energy dependence is explained by the co-existence of open and closed orbits in the phase space. Ripple resonance diffusion is dominant for fusion-produced α particles since the resonance energy width occupies a large portion of the energy range in their slowing-down processes.

Disruption and vertical instability are simulated by use of the multi-layers method. The tokamak system is not closed in the energy since it has an energy source to contorol the coil current. Then plasma equilibrium is found by minimizing the energy functional, which is free energy including the energy flow from the power supply. Time evolution of the system is presumed the continuous equilibrium. Because this model, which includes no cold plasma surrounding the main plasma, can take longer computational time step than MHD model, it enables us to design a PF coil system incorporating the transient phenomenon of plasma such as disruption, and to study the efficient operation and the reliable control methods of next-generation tokamak-type reactors.

We experimentally found that the excitation of saddle-type coils can suppress the vertical shift of tokamak plasmas and can sustain the plasma center nearly on the mid-plane of the PHiX tokamak. It is for the first time in the world that saddle-type coils which are commonly employed to suppress surface MHD modes can also stabilize the vertical plasma position in tokamaks. The original objective of demonstration of major disruption suppression by passive stabilization of plasma position, however, has not been attained with simple coils.

Since the flux swing speed of future tokamak reactors with superconducting coils is limited, we aimed to reduce the one-turn loop voltage by exploiting the closed magnetic surfaces formed with external magnetic field coils. We mounted perturbation coils on the vacuum chamber of the existing small tokamak in our laboratory so that closed magnetic surfaces can be formed in combination with vertical magnetic field coils.
Although the changes in the one-turn loop voltage were not evident with and without closed magnetic surfaces due to insufficient correction of horizontal error magnetic fields, plasma breakdown without the RF power of electron cyclotron resonance was demonstrated to be possible with closed magnetic surfaces.

Plasma position stabilizing effect of simple helical coils were confirmed by experiments on a small tokamak with circular cross-section. Three dimensional free boundary calculation showed that MHD equilibria are possible even with simple helical coils installed on half of torus and toroidal field coils and without axisymmetric vertical fields. The horizontal plasma position does not change much even when the plasma current is doubled.
The toroidal field coils (TFCs) of a newly fabricated small tokamak with elongated cross-section to demonstrate the passive plasma position control with simple helical coils are supported only at the outer side of torus by adoption of edge-wise winding of conductors. Vector control of a flywheel generator with an induction motor enabled nearly constant TFC magnetization longer than a second.

The confinement of alpha particles is important in tokamak systems. Guiding center equations which ignores Larmor radius are used in order to evaluate alpha-particles orbits, while the equations are not valid for spherical tokamaks in which the characteristic length of variation of magnetic field is not negligible compared with Larmor radius. Although these differences, which are finite Larmor radius effects, appear as locations of banana tips, the differences are quantitative, not qualitative. Next we analyzed the ripple-resonance diffusion, which are caused by the resonance of banana-particle motions and magnetic field ripples, numerically and theoretically. The diffusion coefficients are enhanced around the ripple resonance energy while they are not so much enhanced in the neighborhood of it. Consequently, they have a local minimum near the resonance energy, and hence they have an M-shaped energy dependence. Ripple resonance is caused by a radial change of the toroidal precession of banana particles, and creates islands in a phase space.

Stress distributions of a compact tokamak device Tbdoroki-II with TF-CS hybrid type forte-balanced coils were measured. The measured values were similar to analytically evaluated values, and the reduction of stress was experimentally confirmed.]
A fully-inonduced current start up process of a spherical torus (ST) with a transport model of CDBM was numerically simulated. This results show the possibility of a current oscillation by interactions of profiles of internal transport barrier, pressure and boot strap current. A possibility of an over-drive of plasma current was also shown.
A finite Larmor radius effect in ST is important because of the weakness of magnetic field compared with that of conventional tokamak. A computation code to calculate trajectory and diffusion coefficient without guiding center approximation was developed. The results were compared with those of conventional tokamak by guiding center approximation. Especially, we investigated an anomalous diffusion by a resonance of toroidal field ripple and banana particles, and evaluated an energy dependence of the diffusion coefficients. The result shows that Larmor motion affects the toroidal phase of banana tip, and softens the resonance. In order to investigate the physical mechanism of the resonance, we use the simple equilibrium configuration with a circular cross section of a conventional tokamak. We numerically found that the peaks of diffusion coefficients appears around the resonance energies of axisymmetric magnetic field. Moreover, distortion of trajectories by the resonance in a phase space makes island configurations, transverse motions by collisions enhance the diffusion.

Purpose of the present study is to provide practical guideline for fusion reactor design and operation scenario with disruption avoidance. Regarding negative shear plasmas with transport barriers difficult to maintain, we have clarified characteristics of frequent disruptions, and provided a stable pathway to attain high-beta, high bootstrap current plasmas while taking a detour of the disruption avoidance.
First, a self-consistent simulation code was developed to model a transport improvement in accordance with the magnetic shear and a consequent formation of the plasma pressure and bootstrap current profiles. Physics models of disruption events such as thermal quench, associated current spike and vertical displacement were formulated. Additionally, physics model of the most common disruption, which has been frequently occurring in low-beta regime discharges, was provided for a guideline along which the disruptions can be avoided. A new neural-net predictor that can be used even for beta-limit typed disruption normally observed without any of precursors and thus too hard to predict, was presented and verified by JT-60U experiments. In regard to high confinement plasmas fitting in with high bootstrap current, we presented steady-state, advanced operation scenarios, i.e., non-inductive current ramp-up and recharging of center solenoid current vigorously using the bootstrap current. Moreover, an innovative burning scenario was proposed to control the structure of transport barriers using a small inductive perturbation of externally applied electric field. Underlying mechanism of a beta-collapse with a regular intermittency observed in JT-60U negative shear discharge was clarified that "Return Current" induced by the NBCD turn-off underwent a spatial diffusion to modify the transport barrier, increasing in the stored energy that led to a MHD instability with a destruction profile localized around peripheral region of the negative shear plasma. The study has presented such the important knowledges useful for the sake of disruption avoidance operation scenarios.

To develop a polarimeter which measures magnetic field strength by the use of Faraday elements, the cross Nichole method, polarization modulation method and polarization rotation method were tested and compared.
Although the cross Nichole method does not have enough accuracy, which depends on the polarization angle, it was confirmed that its fast response and low cost is superior to the two heterodyne methods.
The measurement accuracy of the polarization modulation method utilizing two photoelastic modulators also depends on the polarization angle ; the standard deviation has a maximum of about 0.07 deg. around a polarization angle of 22.5 deg. and the signal to noise ratio was evaluated to has a peak of about 150 near 0 deg. The stability of the zero level is much better than that of the polarization rotation method. The variations of the zero level were within 0.01 deg.
For the light source of the polarization rotation, a Zeeman-effect laser was adopted to stabilize the zero level of the phase difference. The lasing, however, becomes unstable when a polarization maintaining optical fiber was used for free optical layout of multi-channel measurements. With an optical isolator, the temperature of which was well controlled to be constant, can reduce the backward light and hence the lasing was managed to be stable. When the whole optical isolator was put in a isotherm box, the measurement accuracy was demonstrated to be 0.01% for a long period of 10000 s.
The Verdet constants of candidate Faraday elements such as lead glass and ZnSe were evaluated under magnetic fields up to 5 T using a superconducting magnet.

Accurate measurements of the plasma current and magnetic fields around the plasma are indispensable for real-time control and data analysis in magnetic fusion devices. Commonly used inductive pickup loops, however, suffer from zero-point drifts of integration in the case of long integration over several hundred seconds. To avoid this problem, a heterodyne polarimeter which measures the Faraday effect was developed as a magnetic field sensor for long-pulsed fusion devices. The wavelength of laser beam was chosen to be 850 nm since the radiation-induced loss in optical fibers is significant below 800 nm while the Faraday rotation angle decreases with increasing wavelength. By the use of a distributed Bragg reflector laser diode and a Faraday isolator, excellent stability of phase measurement was attained. We confirmed that the use of a polarization maintaining fiber between the phase shifter part and the sensor part did not degrade the phase stability when the laser beam coupling to the fiber was optimized. The phase resolution was raised to up to 0.01 deg. by the digital complex demodulation and digital band-pass filtering of beat signals. Hence a low birefringence silica fiber is sufficient for a plasma current sensor of fusion devices instead of a flint glass fiber with a high Verdet constant.
Although the Verdet constant of heavily Tb^<3+>-doped paramagnetic glass is larger than that of ZnSe by about a factor of 1.4, ZnSe is superior to the former in terms of negligible temperature dependence. With a 40-mm long ZnSe sensing rod, resolutions of the magnetic field strength of about 5 and 2 gauss were found to be possible with time responses of 1 ms and 10 ms, respectively.
