When a DMF solution of 1,8,13-trimercaptotriptycene is allowed to stand under an inert atmosphere, a single crystalline molecular cluster with disulfide bonding results. Likewise, several thiol-containing triptycene derivatives yield single crystalline disulfide-containing clusters with different structural patterns. One of these clusters featuring a densely arranged tetrapod-like disulfide moiety exhibits a particularly high refractive index of 1.75, much higher than that of the others, although the sulfur contents of these clusters are comparable.

<title>Abstract</title>Borophene has been recently proposed as a next-generation two-dimensional material with promising electronic and optical properties. However, its instability has thus far limited its large-scale applications. Here, we investigate a liquid-state borophene analogue with an ordered layer structure derived from two-dimensional borophene oxide. The material structure, phase transition features and basic properties are revealed by using X-ray analysis, optical and electron microscopy, and thermal characterization. The obtained liquid crystal exhibits high thermal stability at temperatures up to 350 °C and an optical switching behaviour driven by a low voltage of 1 V.

A novel approach for fabricating a microlens array with a tunable surface topographical structure and focal length is proposed in the present study. The microlens array was manufactured through the photoinduced molecular reorientation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) stabilized by a polymer network. The fabricated microlens array had a mountain-shaped topographical structure due to the accumulation of polymers and LC molecules. The molecular orientation of the LC inside the microlens was disordered, while the outer side of the microlens was ordered. The thermal expansion of the polymer network and the phase transition of the LC molecules within the microlens array allowed the surface topographical structure and the focal length to be reversibly tuned under heat treatment. The results of this research work will enable future implementations to provide a thermally tunable microlens array.

<title>Abstract</title>Single-particle fluorescence imaging is used to monitor dynamic processes that occur during patterned photopolymerization of liquid-crystalline monomers. A spatial gradient of chemical potential can be created at the border of bright and dark regions by structured illumination in the photopolymerization process, leading to mutual diffusion of polymers and monomers. Analysis of the fluorescence from single quantum dots doped into the monomers at minute concentrations enables visualization of highly directional flow from the illuminated region where the photopolymerization proceeds toward a masked unpolymerized region. This directional mass flow causes flow-induced orientation of the polymers that is subsequently fixed by completion of the polymerization reaction, resulting in a mesoscopic aligned area of the polymer film.

Liquid crystal is a high-functional material with a large optical anisotropy and fluidity. Molecular reorientation of liquid crystal (LC) can be sufficiently controlled by photophysical processes. Upon irradiation above a threshold light intensity, intermolecular interaction of the excited dye molecules and the LC molecules changes the molecular orientation of the dye-doped LC. Recently, we have reported that oligothiophene-doped polymer-stabilized LC undergoes an alignment change at the lowest light intensity. In this study, we examined the effect of cross-linking in the molecular alignment.

Collagen is a useful protein with a strong mechanical property and high biocompatibility, and collagen has been used as biocompatible soft materials for medical applications. To fabricate such materials, control of molecular alignment plays an important role. Various molecular alignment methods have been explored; however, the existing methods have drawbacks in complicated manufacture processes and costly equipment. In this study, we aimed to fabricate a large-area oriented collagen film by means of surface relief template.

Molecular orientation induced by photoalignment method has attracted much attention in display applications. We have found that molecular alignment is induced at the boundary between the exposed area and the non-exposed area in masked photopolymerization process. However, detailed mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we produced films by masked photopolymerization and evaluated the molecular alignment behavior and surface structure by polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Alignment control of functional anisotropic molecules is effective for fabricating specialty films. Recently we have developed a new method to align molecules with unpolarized UV light: fabrication of unidirectionally aligned polymer films is achieved when anisotropic monomers are photopolymerized through a moving photomask. In this study, we used two monomers with different lengths of alkyl spacer in order to examine the effect of molecular structure. Both mesogens were unidirectionally aligned by photopolymerization; however, polarized UV-VIS spectra revealed that alignment direction became different depending on the alkyl spacer length.

Control of molecular alignment is important to functionalize soft materials. Two approaches were conducted to induce molecular alignment; mechanical alignment by stretching or rubbing and photoalignment. These processes were widely investigated but have problems such as contamination of dust in rubbing and necessity of high intensity polarized light in photoalignment. We have recently found that anisotropic monomers are aligned through photopolymerization with moving light. In this process, we also found that a periodic structure was formed spontaneously in the obtained polymer film. In this study, we fabricated the polymer films with periodic structures, and observed the film with a polarized optical microscope.

<p>To improve various properties of specialty films, precise control of molecular alignment is important. The existing practical process to align anisotropic molecules is rubbing, while there are some problems; a static generation, contamination of dust. For overcoming these problems, we have found a new principle to induce molecular alignment. When photopolymerization of a mixture of anisotropic monomer, cross-linker and photoinitiator is carried out through a moving photomask, unidirectionally aligned polymer films can be obtained due to monomer diffusion. However, the detailed mechanism remains unexplored. In this study, effects of surface treatment and properties of liquid -crystalline monomers on molecular alignment are discussed. Furthermore, the molecular alignment mechanism is considered.</p>

It is well known that low-molecular-weight liquid crystals doped with a dye molecule can undergo photoinduced molecular reorientation upon irradiation with a Gaussian laser beam. The phenomenon is a nonlinear optical effect, and it takes place only above certain threshold intensity. In this study, an oligothiophene derivative was doped into polymerizable liquid-crystalline mixtures, and the aligned samples were polymerized. Photoresponsive behavior of the resultant liquid-crystalline polymer film was studied.

The crosslinkable oligothiophene was synthesized, and photoresponsive behavior of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) doped with the crosslinkable oligothiophene was investigated. The LC nature and optical properties of these compounds were evaluated. The photoinduced diffraction rings were observed as a result of self-phase modulation, when an Ar+ laser beam at 488 nm was irradiated above the threshold intensity. The number of rings, which shows the degree of the change in alignment, depended on the light intensity. The reoriented LCs were stabilized by photopolymerization with 366-nm light from a high-pressure Hg lamp.

Azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymers containing a thienylacetylene moiety in the side chain were synthesized and their thermal and optical properties were investigated. The polymers obtained exhibited an LC phase in a wide temperature range. The change in transmittance of probe light through a pair of crossed polarizers was studied by irradiation of the film with an Ar+ laser beam at 488 nm. The birefringence decreased due to the change in alignment induced by trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety. The polymer film showed the high birefringence value.

The formation of gratings in polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) containing phynylacetylene moieties was studied. To obtain high diffraction efficiency (η), we prepared a novel PLC containing an azobenzene group directly connected with a tolane moiety (3AT), which has large birefringence (Δn). It was found that the value of birefringence in 3AT was extremely high (Δn=0.39). When two s-polarized writing beams from an Ar^+ laser at 488 nm were interfered on the surface of the 3AT film in the glassy state, multiple diffraction beams immediately appeared, resulting from the grating formation. The value of η was relatively high (η=20%) even though the alignment change of mesogens was small.

Polarization grating was formed in polymer azobenzene liquid crystal films. Two beams of an Argon-ion laser (488nm) under different polarization combination were interfered in the film, and the intensity of the first order diffraction light of a He-Ne laser beam (633nm) was measured. Gratings recorded under (+45, -45) combination of writing beams showed high diffraction efficiency (〜27%) with slight surface modulation (〜80nm). It was revealed that the gratings consist of the periodic molecular arrangement of the azobenzen moieties.

Periodic structures containing azobenzene moieties were fabricated by photopolymerization with three interfered beams of an Ar^+ laser at 514.5nm. After rinsing to remove unreacted monomers, an opalescent film was obtained. A two-dimensional hexagonal polymeric structure with a 3-μm period was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was also confirmed that periodic structure was constructed in macroscopic scale by observation of six 1st-order diffracted beams of a He-Ne laser at 633nm. Upon photoirradiation at 366nm, the intensity of diffracted beam from the film decreased.

Photochemical phase transition behavior of thin films of the polymer azobenzene liquid crystal (LC) has been investigated with a picosecond laser pulse (355nm, 20ps FWHM). Time-resolved measurements revealed that the photochemical nematic (N) to isotropic (I) phase transition took place in 200ns. This is due to the formation of a large amount of cis-azobenzenes by the high-intensity laser pulse with a short pulse width, followed by disorganization of the phase structure of the N phase by the large amount of the cis-azobenzene molecules. The photoresponse of this polymer azobenzene LC was independent of laser power and temperature. Furthermore, this response was fastest among those reported previously for polymer LCs. It is expected that the polymer azobenzene LCs can be applied in various photonic devices.

Photoinduced formation of the grating in homeotropic thick cells of a polymer azobenzene liquid crystal (PALC) was explored. Lippmann-type hologram was recorded with linearly polarized beams of an Ar^+ laser at 488 nm. Upon photoirradiation, the diffracted light based on the Bragg diffraction gradually appeared. It was found that the maximum diffraction efficiency of about 40 % was obtained by 1-h photoirradiation and the resulting fringe spacing was estimated as about 160 nm.

Formation of diffraction gratings in polymer azobenzene liquid crystal films was investigated by pico-second laser pulses. On irradiation of interfered pulses at 355 nm (Nd : YAG ; 20 ps, fwhm), the first-order diffraction of a readout beam at 633 nm was immediately observed. It was found that the diffraction signal rose up in approximately 250 ns. With an increase in the light intensity, the diffraction efficiency also increased. From the diffraction efficiency, the modulation of refractive index (Δn) was evaluated. The value of Δn was estimated as 0.07 at the maximum diffraction efficiency. These results suggest that the diffraction gratings formed in the polymer films were based on the photochemical N-I phase transition of the azobenzene liquid crystal.

Optical switching behavior of near-infrared laser beam was explored by means of polymer azobenzene liquid crystal (PM6AB2) films. The sample film was set between two crossed polarizers, and the change in transmittance of probe light at 1,550 nm and 633 nm was measured upon irradiation with pumping light at 366 nm. It was found that the near-infrared laser beam could also be switched by the photochemical phase transition of azobenzene liquid crystals.

Recently we reported that nematic liquid crystals doped with thienylene derivatives were reoriented very efficiently without any change in the chemical structure by illuminating an Ar^+ laser. In this work, a tolan derivative was newly synthesized, and the photoinduced reorientation behavior of the dye-doped nematic liquid crystal was investigated. Photoinduced diffraction rings were observed according to the self phase modulation effect. Furthermore, a pump-probe optical measurement was conducted to determine the reorientational direction of liquid crystals. As a result, liquid crystals were reoriented parallel to the polarization direction of the pumping beam.

Polarization grating was formed in side-chain azobenzene liquid crystal films. Two orthogonally crossed linearly polarized beams of Ar^+ laser at 488 nm were interfered in the film, and the intensity of the first order diffraction light of a He-Ne laser beam at 633 nm was measured. The diffracted light appeared due to the formation of polarization grating. After irradiation the formation of polarization grating was confirmed by polarizing optical microscopy and AFM.

Photochemical phase transition behavior of azobenzene liquid crystals (LCs) was explored by means of transient grating method. It was found that the degree of relaxation of LC alignment largely depended on the structure of azobenzene derivatives. Azobenzenes having alkyl or alkoxy chain in the tail group disturbed the alignment of LCs more efficiently than fluorinated ones.

We have investigated so far the optical switching due to photochemical nematic to isotropic phase transition of azobenzenc liquid crystals. To achieve much-enhanced photoresporse, we direct our attention to the viscosity of the compound, When we use low viscosity materials, we may observe quick photochemical phase transition It was generally reported that fluorinated liquid crystals show low viscosity and fast response. In this study, we synthesized fluorinated azobenzene liquid crystals and examined photochemical phase transition behavior.

This study describes the enhanccment of diffraction efficiency in the formation of graings by means of polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) containing a photochromic and a mesogenic unit. On irradiation of writing beams (488 nm) in an N phase, the intensity of the diffraction beam increased immediately and decreased within 500 ms. When the writing beams were turned off, the diffraction efficiency was rapidly enhanced over 5 times (about 20 %), Furthermore, the grating was stable below glass transition temperature (Tg). We evaluated the film surface to investigate the mechanism of these phenomena by scanning probe microscopy (SPM). It was revealed that a slight surface relief grating (SRG) (15-20 nm) was formed. This fact clearly indicates that the SRG makes a small contribution to the refractive-index modulation. It is speculated that the enhancement of the diffraction efficiency would be attributable to the refractive-index change based on the alignment change of mesogens.

The mesomorphic gold nanoballs covalently convered with a mesogenic compound (5CPnMPC), were successfully prepared. trans-(4-Pentylcyclohexyl)phenyl derivatives carrying thiol group (5CPnSH) were newly synthesized, which exhibit thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. 5CPnMPCs were prepared by reduction of tetrachloroaurate (III) ion with sodium borohydride in the presence of 5CPnSH. The mean diameter of 5CP7MPC was estimated by TEM measurement as about 2.0 nm. Interestingly, 5CPnMPC exhibited double melting behavior with a mesophase within particular temperature region by differential scanning calorimetry. However, 5CPnMPC showed optically isotropic state at every temperature points as evidenced by polarizing microscopy. In addition, 5CPnMPC were dispersed into low molecular liquid crystal medium (for example, 5CB). The metal particle / liquid crystal nanocomposite materials were obtained and their properties were studied.

Novel azobenzene derivatives contakning a tolane moiety, 4-hexyloxy-[4'-(4-nitrophenylethynyl)]azobenzene (compound A) and 4-hexyloxy-[4'-(4-aminophenylethynyl)]azobenzene (compound B) were synthesized. Liquid-crystalline behavior and optical property of these compounds were evaluated by DSC, optical microscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Both compounds were found to show nematic phase. Compound A showed an absorption maximum at shorter wavelength (λ_<max> = 376 rim) than compound B (λ_<max> = 407 nm). For both samples, trans-cis photoisomerization was induced by photoirradiation, and trans form was thermally recovered. Thermal isomerization of these samples containing a strong electron donor or accepter was much slower than that of normal donor-accepter azobenzenes.

We have reported an anisotropic shape change of azobenzene liquid-caystaliine gels (LC gets) in toluene. In this study, to investigate the photoresponsive mechanism of LC gels, the photoresponsive behavior of LC gels under various conditions was explored. LC gels showed an anisotropic shape change even in the absence of solvents. These results indicate that the photoresponsive mechanism of LC gels is not interactions between azobenzene moieties and solvents, but an anisotropic shrinkage due to difference of molecular distance between trans form and cis form of azobenzene.

Optical manipulation of plane of polarizaiton was explored by means of photosensitive liquid crystal in twisted-nematic mode. 4-Butyl-4'-methoxyazobenzene (BMAB) was used as a photosensitive liquid crystal, which photoisomerizes from trans form to cis form on photoirradiation at 355 nm. In the trans form, BMAB shows nematic phase, while it never shows the liquid-crystalline phase in the cis form. Transmittance of light at 633 nm through the cell between two parallel polarizers changed on pulse irradiation at 355 nm (fwhm, 10 ns). This result may be due to change in rotation angle of the plane of polarization, which is induced by the trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety.

Azobenzene derivative, azobenzene crosslinker, phenylbenzoate derivative and hydroquinone crosslinker with vinyl groups were synthesized to fabricate the crosslinked liquid-crystalline polymer films. Undirectionally aligned crosslinked azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymer films with a polysiloxane backbone were prepared by hydrosilylation reaction. Two-dimensional surface labeled gratings were recorded in surface of the film with a photomask. A probe beam at 633 nm was incident to the film, and surface deformation of the film was evaluated by an external stress or ultraviolet irradiation using a light diffraction. In addition, effect of position and behavior of front and back surfaces in the film on the deformation has been investigated.

Polymer azobenzene films containing various contents of a tolane moiety with large birefringence were prepared. Two linearly polarized beams of an Ar^+ laser (488 nm) were interfered in the film, and the light intensity of the first-order diffraction of a He-Ne laser beam (633 nm) was measured. In the film with thickness of 100 μm, the diffraction efficiency reached 99.2% when photoirradiation was performed at 200 mW/cm^2 for 13 min. The maximum diffraction efficiency was significantly influenced by the content of the tolane moiety.

Photopolymerization of ferroelectric liquid-crystalline monomers was carried out under an electric field. Upon photoirradiation of an Ar^+ laser beam at 488 nm, a monomer mixture in a 2-μm cell was polymerized and the initial molecular alignment was stabilized. Next, two beams at 488 nm were interfered in the cell, and the light intensity of the first-order diffraction light of a He-Ne laser beam at 633 nm was measured. The diffracted light appeared due to the grating formation. By applying an electric field, the intensity of the diffraction light increased, indicating a change in alignment of the unreacted monomers.

Homeotropically aligned azobenzene liquid-crystalline elastomer (LCE) films were prepared and investigated in terms of the photoinduced bending behavior. Upon irradiation of UV light which induces photoisomerization of the azobebzene moieties, the film bent away from the UV light and reverted to the initial state when irradiated at visible light, contrary to the bending behavior of a homogeneous film. This can be explained by a different volume transformation.

A flexible liquid crystal hologram was prepared as a novel type of holographic materials. Polycarbonate films covered with a polyimide were employed as a substrate, and toluene solution of a polymer azobenzene liquid crystal (PALC) was coated on the rubbed substrate, resulting in a flexible PALC film. We attempted the formation of gratings and holographic image storage of 3-D objects into the flexible film. A clear and bright 3-D image was successfully reconstructed even in the bent film. This indicates that the holographic diffraction grating is formed in the flexible PALC film.

Polymer films containing a donor-accepter type azobenzene moiety were prepared and formation of gratings based on a photoinduced change in refractive index was explored. When two linearly polarized beams of an Ar^+ laser (514 nm) were interfered in the CB30AB5 film (film thickness : 250 μm), the diffraction beam based on Bragg diffraction appeared immediately. The maximum diffraction efficiency reached 98% upon photoirradiation at 100 mW/cm^2 for 6 min. It was clearly observed that the response time became shorter with an increase in the light intensity of the writing beams, maintaining the high diffraction efficiency. Furthermore, holographic multiple data storages in the CB30AB5 film were demonstrated.

Photonic crystal structures were formed by polymer particles containing azobenzene moieties and their optical responsiveness was investigated. A Bragg diffraction peak due to the periodic structure was observed in the PME3-30 film in the reflection spectrum. A change in the intensity of the diffraction peak was induced by irradiation of a linearly polarized beam at 488 nm. The observation of the film by SEM revealed the adhesion of the polymer particles induced by photoirradiation.

Polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) with donor-acceptor type azobenzcne moieties (CNAB6) or common azobenzene moieties (AB6) in the side chain were synthesized Homogeneous alignment in the PLCs was induced by using linearly polarized light at 366 nm. Induced order parameter was measured at various irradiation temperaturres by using polarized UV spectroscopy. It was found that the alignment behavior was dependent on the structure of the azobenzene groups. The writing rate of AB6 was higher than that of CNAB6. When the writing light was switched off, discrete increase of the transmittance (positive relaxation) was observed in AB6, while no relaxation in CNAB6. The writing process of CNAB6 can be well dcscibed by a biexponential function. The behavior of azobenzene moieties during the alignment process was investigated. Higher concentration of cis-azobenzene was produced in AB6 during the alignment process. It is one of the reasons for higher writing rate and positive relaxation of AB6.

The change in refractive index of liquid-crystalline azobenzenes induced by nanosecond laser pulse was investigated with reference to optical switching. The photoresponsive liquid crystals show nematic phase in the trans form while no liquid-crystalline phase in the cis form. Intensity of reflected light from interface between sample and glass substrate depends on refractive indices of both materials, and hence the change in refractive index of sample results in change in the intensity of the reflected light. We measured the intensity of the reflected light at 633 nm (He-Ne laser) from the interface and found that the reflected light rose up in 100 ms on pulse irradiation at 355 nm (YAG laser, the third harmonic, 10 ns FWHM) and decayed in 1 ms. The decay was 1000 times faster than those observed in the transmittance-mode measurements. The fast decay may be due to different mechanism in the reflection-mode measurements. At first, molecules in the cis form diffuse into molecules in the trans form which did not photoisomerize. Next, the molecules in the trans form reorient on the glass surface. By the use of the reflection-mode light probe, we successfully obtained more rapid change in optical switching than that of the transmittance-mode light probe.

Light control and manipulation in near-infrared region has widely attract much attentions because of their potential application in optical fiber, biosensing and photo voltaic system. In order to light trapping in near-infrared region, array of gold nanofins with ultra high aspects has been prepared in solid substrates based on nanocoating lithography. This Au nanoarray can successfully trap near infrared light. In addition, dye molecules which were introduced into the gaps of Au nanofins showed emphanced fluorescence emission compared with the dye simply embedded polymer layer without Au nanofins. And we also found the nanoconfined effect on molecular assembly of liquid crystal molecules and these molecules self-assembled columnar structures with specific orientation in the gaps of Au nanofins.

Holography, which enables optical storage of three-dimension images, has been of great interest for photonic applications. To obtain clear images, Bragg hologram that theoretically achieves 1O0-% diffraction efficiency is required. In the Bragg hologram, materials should be optically sensitive, meaning that refractive index is efficiently changed by light. Liquid crystals, showing large optical anisotropy and fluidity, can be a good candidate for holographic materials since a large change in refractive index can be easily induced by external fields. There is another important characteristic in the hologram : reversibility of recording. Commercially available materials are sensitive enough, while images cannot be erased, which limits the application to photonic devices. Azobenzene is one of the outstanding photochromic molecules that are capable of changing absorption, molecular shape, and refractive index reversibly upon photoirradiation. Consequently, polymer liquid crystals incorporated with an azobenzene moiety are naturally expected to be reversible holographic materials.
In this study, two types of hologram, transmission-type and the Lippmann-type, were investigated using polymer azobenzene liquid crystal films. A linearly polarized beam from Ar^+ laser at 488 nm was split to two beams and interfered in the film with a crossing angle of 14゜ in transmission type and 180゜ in the Lippmann-type, respectively. Formation behavior of the transmission-type grating was probcd with a linearly polarized beam from He-Ne laser at 633 nm. The Lippmann-type grating was evaluated with transmission spectrum. In the transmission type, diffraction of the probe beam appeared upon irradiation of writing beams at 488 nm. Diffraction efficiency (η), that is defined as the ratio of diffraction intensity during irradiation to transmission intensity before irradiation, increased to 14% on photoirradiation. On the other hand, in the Lippman-type grating, the value of q for 500-nm light reached 43% when the film was irradiated at 350 mW/cm^2 for 60 min.

Uniform alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is indispensable for their optical and optpelectronic applications, which is conventionally obtained by mechanically rubbing a polyimide (PI) layer. However, dust particles and static surface charges are produced by the rubbing process, which would cause electrical and mechanical damage to thin film transistors. In recent years, the technique for unidirectional alignment of LCs caused by PI films exposed to linearly polarized UV (LPUV) light has been developed. this method allows for easy control of the alignment direction and the fast preparation of an alignment layer, and causes little dust particles and electrostatic damage. In this case, the alignment of LC is perpendicular to the polarization of LPUV light, and exposure should be made two times in order to give precise pretilt of LCs. In this project , we developed a novel method to induce a parallel alignment of LC to polarization of LPUV light by irradiating during the thermal treatment process. Polyamic-acid-coated ITO glass substrate was irradiated with LPUV light at 8.5 mW/cm^2 during the thermal imidization process. The irradiation time was about 30 min and the thermal treatment was processed from 100 to 250 ℃ at a heating rate of 5 ℃/mm. After irradiation, the substrate was then imidized for 10 min at 250 ℃. LC cells with a gap of 5 μm were constructed using two pieces of the above substrates with parallel polarization axes. 4'-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) doped with 0.3 wt% dichroic dye M-137 (λmax = 639 nm) was filled into the cells in an isotropic phase at 75 ℃ and cooled down to room temperature. By polarizing microscopy and polarized UV spectra, it was found that the LC molecules were aligned uniaxially and uniformly.
