    Norbornene-appended achiral amphiphilic hexabenzocoronene (HBC) was coassembled with chiral HBC possessing a similar structure, resulting in a formation of nanocoils with a controlled helical handedness via the sergeants-and-soldiers effect. Subsequently, the one-handed nanocoils underwent surface polymerization via ROMP using Grubbs catalyst to form covalently stabilized chiral nanocoils.

    We have reported a novel low-voltage driven dry polymer actuators based on single-walled carbon nanotube gels (bucky gels) of ionic liquids. The actuator has a bimorph structure composed of polymer-supported bucky gel electrodes and a polymer-supported ionic-gel electrolyte. In order to improve the performance of the actuator, we further explored the relations between the structure of the actuator film and its performace. Herein we report details of improved response of our bucky gel actuator.

    本研究では、申請者らが独自に開発した、2次元入れ子状ハニカム構造への集合化を強力に誘起する「三枚羽プロペラ型分子(三脚型トリプチセン)」を2次元超分子足場として利用するアプローチにより、種々の官能基や機能団を、固体表面上の単分子膜、「2次元ハニカム+1次元積層」構造を特徴とする多層膜、あるいは、バルクな結晶や高分子集合体などの形態へと精密に集積化することで、多様な次元性と機能を有する物質群の開発に取り組んだ。
    単・多層有機薄膜の開発:三脚型トリプチセンに対して、一方の面に固体表面への吸着性官能基、その反対側に種々の官能基または機能団を面選択的に導入した新規誘導体の合成法を開発した。これにより、官能基が固体表面上で規則的かつ高密度・高配向で2次元集積化した自己組織化単分子膜(SAM)を構築するための技術基盤を確立した。具体例として、シアノ基とチオール基を面選択的に導入した誘導体により、金(111)表面上でシアノ基が完全垂直配向して規則的に並んだSAMを作製したところ、大きな双極子をもつCN基の2次元集積化により金(111)基板の仕事関数が顕著に増大することを見いだした。また、Huisgen付加環化反応を示す2種類の官能基を面選択的に導入した三脚型トリプチセンの配向多層膜は、加熱により「2次元+1次元」の構造規則性を保持したまま重合反応が進行し、構造規則性と化学安定性が高い薄膜を与えることを見いだした。
    自己集合性高分子の開発:三脚型トリプチセンを主鎖骨格に有する高分子が、トリプチセン部位の2次元集合化により長周期のラメラ構造へと自己集合することを見いだした。この特異な構造化により高分子の粘弾性が飛躍的に向上することも明らかにし、汎用高分子の物性改善の新手法を提示した。
    上記に加え、2次元集合化を示す新たな分子モチーフの開発や、ナノ薄膜の新しい表面構造解析手法の開発に成功した。

    優れたキラル光学特性を示すヘリセン誘導体を目指し、磁気遷移が大きくかつ部分的に電気許容となるような遷移を示す[7]ヘリセン誘導体を合成し、高い蛍光量子収率と高い円偏光発光非対称因子の両立を達成した。また、D2対称性を持つ分子の電気遷移と磁気遷移の方向が全ての遷移で平行(反平行)になるという、群論に基づく知見に着目し、[5]ヘリセンをフェニレン架橋により二量化した8の字型ヘリセン二量体を合成し、高い円偏光発光非対称因子を達成した。
    らせん状ナノグラフェン分子の分子機能の解明を目的として、UDFT計算を用いて交換相互作用の減衰定数に基づく電子輸送特性について検討を行い、π拡張ヘリセンが、らせん骨格のオレフィン様の電子構造に起因して、優れた分子ワイヤとして知られるリレンに匹敵する電子輸送特性を持つ可能性を理論的に予測した。また、熱的に安定ならせんキラリティーを有する近赤外発光色素を目指し、テトラベンゾ[7]ヘリセンの合成を行い、この化合物が近赤外領域で幅広い蛍光を示す、キラル発光材料として働くことを示した。
    特異な高密度集合化能を示すプロペラ分子を用いた設計戦略を展開し、汎用ポリマーの側鎖官能基化による機械特性の劇的向上、巨大金属酸化物クラスターのサイズ・形状選択的合成、反応性官能基を面選択的に導入した誘導体による高い構造規則を有する固相重合膜の開発などを達成した。また、新たな高密度共役分子集合体の創製へ向けたビルディングブロックとして、高電子受容性プロペラ分子、双極性回転子を導入したヘキサアリールベンゼン誘導体などを開発した。
    距離と配向が制限された多層型共役系オリゴマーを2量体から5量体まで新規に合成し、その酸化還元特性、温度応答性を明らかとした。

    新しい構造特性を持つポリマーの創成は、材料科学を中心に様々な分野に大きなインパクトを与える可能性がある。研究代表者はこれまでに、通常のポリマーと比べてより高次な構造要素を持つラダーポリマーの合成法の開拓に注力してきた。本研究では、(1)配座柔軟性ジアザシクロオクタン(DACO)含有ラダーポリマーに関する継続的研究に加え、(2)脈動運動を実現する片方巻らせん状ラダーポリマー、(3)二面性ラダーポリマーと言った、これまで考案すらされていなかった独創的かつ前例無き構造特性のラダーポリマーを世界に先駆けて開発し、それらの物性研究・機能開拓を行う。2021年度は上記(1)~(3)の3つの研究項目に関して下記のような成果が得られている。
    (1) DACO含有ラダーポリマーの物性研究: N上にアシル基を有するDACO含有ラダーポリマーの合成法を新たに開発した。温度可変NMRおよびDFT計算よりそのDACO環の環反転挙動を調査したところ、これまでに合成してきたN-アルキルDACOよりも環反転に高い活性化エネルギーを有し、遅い環反転挙動になっていることがわかった。現在、固体状態における諸物性について調査中である。これ以外にもN上に酢酸基を有するDACOが弱塩基性水溶液により、室温下で瞬時に定量的に脱炭酸を進行させるという特異な反応性も見出した。
    (2) 脈動らせん状ラダーポリマー:屈曲構造を有するC2キラルなモノマーのエナンチオピュア体からのラダー化重合と、その後の誘導化反応に成功しており、今後、その物性について調査する予定である。
    (3)二面性ラダーポリマー:二面性構造を有するC2キラルなモノマーのエナンチオピュア体からのラダー化重合と、その後の誘導化反応に成功しており、今後、その物性について調査する予定である。

    本研究では、平成26~30年度の期間に実施された新学術領域研究「π造形科学:電子と構造のダイナミズム制御による新機能創出(略称名:π造形科学)」の活動を取りまとめた。当該領域では、有機機能物質における新機能創出ならびに新現象発掘を目的として掲げ、構造美を分子・分子集合体の設計原理に取り入れ、かつπ電子系のダイナミズムを引き出す新たな物質創製戦略に基づき研究を展開した。また、参画研究者による卓越した個人研究・領域内共同研究に加えて、領域外研究者との共同研究、国際共同研究、若手育成、アウトリーチ活動においても数々の新しい取り組みを実施してきた。これらの取り組みを通じて得られた成果を収集するとともに、当該領域成果の学術的および社会的意義を総括し、事後評価報告書として取りまとめた。その際、独自に設けた6つの評価項目(1. 学理構築のシーズ; 2. 我が国の研究力強化につながる取り組みと成果; 3. 見出された新機能・新現象;4. 若手育成; 5. 国際活動; 6. 社会貢献)に照らし合わせて、当該領域活動がいずれの評価項目においても特筆すべき成果を挙げたことを示した。その結果、当該領域は令和元年度新学術領域研究(研究領域提案型)に係る事後評価において「A+(研究領域の設定目的に照らして、期待以上の成果があった)」の評価を受けた(https://www.mext.go.jp/content/000003096_04.pdf)。

    We discovered several unprecedented materials that exhibit new structures, phase behaviors, and collective molecular motions, which can update the existing knowledge for soft materials. A remarkable achievement is the finding of a triphenylene-based chiral liquid crystal (LC), which forms a 3D single-crystal-like structure with a droplet-like shape and can flow without losing the 3D structural regularity. The LC also has provided a new knowledge on the relationship between chirality and collective molecular motion. For the design of a new molecular-assembling field, an acoustic levitator, equipped with a heating device and an X-ray diffraction machine, has been developed, to enable the controlled self-assembly of LCs and polymers into millimeter-sized single-domain structures and observe structural events directly. The acoustic levitator was found to provide a unique field for chemical reactions, in which reactions, different from those occurs without levitation, can be induced.

    This research project focused on the construction of international joint research network, "π-Hub", as a part of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas "π-Figuration". To promote active international research exchanges, we supported the invitations of overseas researchers as well as the short-term stays of domestic researchers in overseas research groups. We also organized and supported international symposiums, which were held in overseas research organizations. Through these efforts, joint researches with a total of 40 overseas research institutes with researchers from 17 countries were carried out, and thus, we have formed a tight and strong π-Hub network.

    In this project, we summarized research groups, supported many collaboration works, and led the strengthening of academic level and human resource development. Particularly, a planning and management group, a young research group, and a collaboration support group had been established. We also performed various research promotion and support activities such as domestic and international symposia, meetings in the whole groups, young research group, and colloquium. As an outreach activity, we published articles in the magazine "Chemistry Today" every month. The “π-figuration school” was established to support exchanges with students and researchers from research groups inside and outside the group and to support the development of young people.

    Through this research, we found three types of self-assembly systems that exhibit ultra-long-range structural order at several millimeters to centimeters length scales. Based on detailed studies on these systems, we have demonstrated (1) the fabrication and applications of completely oriented organic thin films with completely controlled molecular orientation, (2) the discovery of a material that shows fluidity while having single crystal-like three-dimensional structural order and macroscopic collective molecular motion controlled by chirality, (3) the discovery of a material featuring a new structural form, which undergoes phase-transition without losing the dimensionality of structural order, and (4) the discovery of a new phenomenon that magnetic field can change the phase diagram of a diamagnetic molecular assembly. Along with these works, we successfully developed a new organic reaction capable of constructing a large π-electronic system.

    We have found that 2,2-indandicarboxamides assembled into the robust 2D-sheet structures based on formation of eight hydrogen bonds per molecule in the solid state. These sheet structures densely stack on one another in an interdigitated manner, therefore, any cavities, in which guests could be included, were formed among these sheets. In this work, we prepared chiral ring-fused malonamides, such as binaphthalene-fused malonamides, to create inclusion crystals with chiral inclusion cavities among these sheets by biasing the conformational chirality of the malonamide moiety toward either one, and by regulating possible hydrogen-bonding patterns. We found that the substituents at the 3,3’-position of the binaphthalene moiety effect on the conformational chirality of malonamide moiety and change the assembling dimensionality from 2D-sheet to 1D-helical structures. Furthermore, we also prepared pi-bridged bis(malonamide)s to construct hydrogen-bonded pillared-layer porous frameworks.

    This research aimed at providing new design strategies to achieve controlled synthesis of organic materials with a nanoscale heterojunction of electronically different molecular units. We developed new organic semiconductors composed of electron donor and acceptor units as a component for donor/acceptor-type polymers applicable to organic solar cells. We found liquid crystalline molecules, having an extended pi-conjugated core and purposely-designed side chains, adopt homeotropic columnar orientation, beneficial for bilayer-type solar cells with a large-area heterojunction. We also showed that a particular space-filling design, relying on 2D nested hexagonal packing of a triptycene derivative allows the formation of large-area thin films with exceptionally long-range 2D structural integrity up to the centimeter length scale. Suitable modification of the triptycene building block would enable precision synthesis of new functional materials with molecular level heterojunctions.

    Based on our original finding that hexaalkoxytriphenylene derivatives, carrying imidazolium ion-terminated paraffinic side chains, generate a unique bicontinuous cubic mesophase, the present research aimed to elucidate the structural aspects of this new class of liquid crystalline (LC) materials. After many trials, we found that the use of triphenylene hexacarboxylic ester, in place of a hexaalkoxytriphenylene core, leads to the formation of a monodomain cubic mesophase. This finding allowed us to unveil the electron density map of the LC material. Indeed, the resultant structure is unprecedented and is characterized by a hybrid structure of gyroid and ring domains, consisting of assemblies of the imidazolium-ion pendants.

    For the realization of high-performance thin-film organic solar cells, a key issue is to develop self-assembly strategies that enable electron donor and acceptor molecules to form a heterojunction with a wide interface of hole and electron transporting nanoscale domains. Through the present work, we showed the first example of one-dimensionally connected organic nanostructures with dissimilar semiconducting properties. Along with this achievement, we serendipitously discovered that a polymer brush, bearing multiple mesogenic units in its side chains, can form a polymer film featuring a large-area homeotropic ordering of the polymer molecules. As an extension of this finding, we demonstrated a new photomechanical material, capable of converting light energy into a mechanical output.

    本研究では酸化還元状態を安定に与える新規なovercrowded ethylene類を合成し,中性状態間及び中性状態とイオン化状態間の相互変換により誘起される構造変化や電子状態の変化に基づく,分子スイッチ等の応答分子系を構築することを目的とした.本年度に於いては,種々の官能基の導入が可能である電子供与性分子として、チオフェンが縮合した4,4'-ビチアピラニリデン誘導体の合成を検討した.ジチエノチオピランから誘導されるチオピリリウム塩,ケトン,チオケトン,ジブロモ体を合成し,様々な条件下でのカップリング反応を試みたが目的化合物は得られなかった.一方,チオピラン部を酸化してスルホンとした後、4位をチオケトンとし,亜リン酸トリエチルによるカップリング反応を行ったところ収率良く二量体を与えた.しかしながら,スルホンからスルフィドへの還元が困難であり,現在のところ目的とする4,4'-ビチアピラニリデン誘導体を合成するには至っていない.そこで新たに,チオピラン部の硫黄原子の代わりに1,3-ジチオール-2-イリデン基を導入することを目的に,その前駆体となるチオフェンが縮合したジフェノキノン誘導体の合成を検討した.この新規ジフェノキノン誘導体は,対応するフェノールの酸化的カップリングと続く脱水素反応により得られた.興味深いことに,この分子の電子スペクトルや酸化還元挙動を調べた結果,類縁体であるビアントロンとは明らかに異なる特徴を有することが見い出された.従って,更なる官能基化を施すことなどにより新しい物性の発現が期待される.現在目的化合物への誘導とともに,このジフェノキノン誘導体の構造と性質について検討を行っている.
