    Abstract

    Ni–Mn–Ga ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) are promising materials for actuator and transducer devices. Their intrinsic brittleness and high fabrication cost in the bulk form are issues to be solved. One of the solutions is a development of composites comprising these materials as a filler component whereby representing an emerging research field in the FSMAs. To address the improvement and stability challenges of the magnetic field-induced martensitic variant reorientation (MVR) characteristics of the particles in the previously elaborated ‘Ni–Mn–Ga single-crystalline particles/silicone rubber’ composites and to unveil new aspects of their functional behaviors, in the present work, we have investigated MVR characteristics as a function of compression cycling and under huge in-situ opposing contractions. It was found that after cycling with the 30% of compressive strain along the particle chains, the value of switching magnetic field needed to start MVR events was notably reduced, whereas it was almost intact when in-situ measured under the same compression level. In-situ measurements of the ‘magnetization versus magnetic field’ curves of the composite squeezed by 50% or 70% did not show MVR blocking. Instead, they revealed both a drastic decrease of the MVR switching field and narrowing of the MVR interval caused by the barreling effect. The results can be useful for the development of novel types of actuators and transducers.

    Abstract

    Due to the critical world population aging issue, biomaterials are important topics in the biomedical community. Among the biomedical materials, shape memory alloys (SMAs) are considered to be promising materials owing to their functionalities, such as shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE). Ti–Mo–Al-based alloys, which are biocompatible materials, are basic materials in the Ti-based SMAs due to the evaluation of the phase stability through the calculations of Mo and Al equivalents. This study, in addition, introduced Zr into the Ti–Mo–Al-based alloys for its highly biocompatibility and being a fine modifier to tune the phase stability. The mechanical (i.e., strength and elongation) and functional (i.e., SME and SE) properties have been investigated in this study to reveal the practicability of the biomedical applications for human usage. It was found that addition of Zr to the Ti–Mo alloy shows slight influence on the mechanical properties of the binary Ti–Mo alloy. With the addition of Al, that is, ternary Ti–Mo–Al alloys, two-stage yielding was found in the tensile examinations. Among all the alloys, the Ti–5.5Mo–4Al, the Ti–5.5Mo–4Al–6Zr, and the Ti–5.5Mo–8Al–6Zr (mol pct) alloys performed excellent shape recovery of about 100 pct in the bending and heating tests. Especially, the Ti–5.5Mo–4Al–6Zr and the Ti–5.5Mo–8Al–6Zr alloys further show high strength. Results in this study could be a guideline for the design of the fundamental Ti–Mo–Al-based SMAs.

    Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs), which are potential candidates for future technologies (i.e., actuators in robots), have been paid much attention for their high work per volume and rapid response as external stimulation, such as a magnetic field, is imposed. Among all the FSMAs, the Ni–Mn–Ga-based alloys were considered promising materials due to their appropriate phase transformation temperatures and ferromagnetism. Nevertheless, their intrinsic embrittlement issue and sluggish twin motion due to the inhibition of grain boundaries restrict their practicability. This study took advantage of the single-crystal Ni–Mn–Ga cube/silicone rubber composite materials to solve the two aforementioned difficulties. The single-crystal Ni–Mn–Ga cube was prepared by using a high-temperature alloying procedure and a floating-zone (FZ) method, and the cubes were verified to be the near-{100}p Ni–Mn–Ga alloy. Various room temperature (RT) curing silicone rubbers were utilized as matrix materials. Furthermore, polystyrene foam particles (PFP) were used to provide pores, allowing a porous silicone rubber matrix. It was found that the elastic modulus of the silicone rubber was successfully reduced by introducing the PFP. Additionally, the magnetic field-induced martensite variant reorientation (MVR) was greatly enhanced by introducing a porous structure into the silicone rubber. The single-crystal Ni–Mn–Ga cube/porous silicone rubber composite materials are considered to be promising materials for applications in actuators.

    The phase stability, mechanical properties, and functional properties of Ti–5.5Al–11.8[Mo]eq alloys are focused on in this study by substituting 3d transition metal elements (V, Cr, Co, and Ni) for Mo as β-stabilizers to achieve similar β phase stability and room temperature (RT) superelasticity. The ternary alloy systems with the equivalent chemical compositions of Ti–5.5Al–17.7V, Ti–5.5Al–9.5Cr, Ti–5.5Al–7.0Co, and Ti–5.5Al–9.5Ni (mass%) alloys were selected as the target materials based on the Mo equivalent formula, which has been applied for the Ti–5.5Al–11.8Mo alloy in the literature. The fundamental mechanical properties and functionalities of the selected alloys were examined. The β phase was stabilized at RT in all alloys except for the Ti–Al–V alloy. Among all alloys, the Ti–Al–Ni alloy exhibited superelasticity in the cyclic loading–unloading tensile tests at RT. As a result, similar to the Ti–5.5Al–11.8Mo mother alloy, by utilizing the Mo equivalent formula to substitute 3d transition metal elements for Mo, a RT superelasticity was successfully imposed.

    Abstract

    Ni–Mn–Ga single crystals (SC) exhibiting a giant magnetic field induced strain (MFIS), resulting from twin boundaries rearrangements, are excellent materials for novel actuators although enhanced brittleness and high costs are remaining the issues for applications. In polycrystalline state Ni–Mn–Ga alloys show small MFIS due to grain boundary constraints. By simple size reduction of the mentioned materials it is hardly possible to create quasi-two-dimensional MFIS actuators on the microscale with a pertinent out-of-plane performance. In pursuit of the trend for next generation materials and functions by design, in the present work we have developed a laminate composite as a prototype of microactuator with the out-of-plane stroke being driven by a framework of magnetostrain responsive Ni–Mn–Ga microparticles. The laminate consisted of the layer of crystallographically oriented Ni–Mn–Ga semi-free SC microparticles sandwiched between bonding polymer and Cu foils. Such design provided a particles isolation with a minimum constraint condition from the polymer. MFIS of the individual particles and the whole laminate composite was investigated by X-ray micro-CT 3D imaging. Both particles and laminate exhibited the same recoverable out-of-plane stroke produced by the particles´ MFIS of around 3% under 0.9 T. The developed microactuator design is promising for applications in the areas of micro-robotics, optical image stabilization in cameras, pumps for microfluidics etc.

    To utilize β-Ti based high temperature (HT) shape memory alloys (SMAs), a high Al concentration of 14 mol% was designed for sufficient suppressing the undesired ω-phase. HTSMA exhibits shape memory effect (SME) above 373 K, and thus the operating temperature is over 373 K. However, the SME and the mechanical properties of most β-Ti SMAs deteriorate after holding at elevated temperatures due to the ω-embrittlement. The Ti-4.5Mo-14Al alloy (mol%) and the Ti-6Mo-7Al alloy as a comparison, both of which possess the identical reverse martensitic transformation start temperature of 407 K, were isothermally held at 393 K for up to 360 ks, and deformation behaviors and microstructures were investigated. It was found that after the isothermal holding, the deformation behavior of the Ti-6Mo-7Al alloy altered significantly; on the other hand, that of the Ti-4.5Mo-14Al alloy remained almost intact. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the isothermal ω-phase (ωiso) was successfully suppressed in the Ti-4.5Mo-14Al alloy, while the ωiso phase grew in Ti-6Mo-7Al alloy. Moreover, the isothermal α″-phase coexisted in the Ti-4.5Mo-14Al alloy. It is concluded that a high Al concentration is a crucial prerequisite in the practical β-Ti HTSMAs. The presented design could be a useful guideline for developing Ti SMAs with comparable Mo- and Al-equivalents.

    The achievement of room-temperature (RT) superelasticity in a Ti-Mo-Al ternary alloy system through the addition of a relatively high concentration of Al to manipulate the phase stability of the ω phase is realized in this study. The composition of the Ti-6 mol% Mo (Ti-11.34 mass% Mo) alloy was designated as the starting alloy, while 5 mol% Al (=2.71 mass% Al) and 10 mol% Al (=5.54 mass% Al) were introduced to promote their superelastic behavior. Among the alloys, Ti-6 mol% Mo-10 mol% Al alloy, which was investigated for the very first time in this work, performed the best in terms of superelasticity. On the other hand, Ti-6 mol% Mo and Ti-6 mol% Mo-5 mol% Al alloys exhibited a shape memory effect upon heating. It is worth mentioning that in the transmission electron microscopy observation, ω phase, which appeared along with β-parent phase, was significantly suppressed as Al concentration was elevated up to 10 mol%. Therefore, the conventional difficulties of the inhibited RT superelasticity were successfully revealed by regulating the number density of the ω phase below a threshold.

    Owing to the world population aging, biomedical materials, such as shape memory alloys (SMAs) have attracted much attention. The biocompatible Ti–Au–Ta SMAs, which also possess high X–ray contrast for the applications like guidewire utilized in surgery, were studied in this work. The alloys were successfully prepared by physical metallurgy techniques and the phase constituents, microstructures, chemical compositions, shape memory effect (SME), and superelasticity (SE) of the Ti–Au–Ta SMAs were also examined. The functionalities, such as SME, were revealed by the introduction of the third element Ta; in addition, obvious improvements of the alloy performances of the ternary Ti–Au–Ta alloys were confirmed while compared with that of the binary Ti–Au alloy. The Ti3Au intermetallic compound was both found crystallographically and metallographically in the Ti–4 at.% Au–30 at.% Ta alloy. The strength of the alloy was promoted by the precipitates of the Ti3Au intermetallic compound. The effects of the Ti3Au precipitates on the mechanical properties, SME, and SE were also investigated in this work. Slight shape recovery was found in the Ti–4 at.% Au–20 at.% Ta alloy during unloading of an externally applied stress.

    To enhance the mechanical properties (e.g., strength and elongation) of the face-centered cubic (fcc) α-phase in the Au-Cu-Al system, this study focused on the introduction of the martensite phase (doubled B19 (DB19) crystal structure of Au2CuAl) via the manipulation of alloy compositions. Fundamental evaluations, such as microstructure observations, phase identifications, thermal analysis, tensile behavior examinations, and reflectance analysis, have been conducted. The presence of fcc annealing twins was observed in both the optical microscope (OM) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Both strength and elongation of the alloys were greatly promoted while the DB19 martensite phase was introduced into the alloys. Amongst all the prepared specimens, the 47Au41Cu12Al and the 44Au44Cu12Al alloys performed the optimized mechanical properties. The enhancement of strength and ductility in these two alloys was achieved while the stress plateau was observed during the tensile deformation. A plot of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) against fracture strain was constructed to illustrate the effects of the introduction of the DB19 martensite phase on the mechanical properties of the alloys. Regardless of the manipulation of the alloy compositions and the introduction of the DB19 martensite phase, the reflectance stayed almost identical to pure Au.

    Texture formation in Ti-7Mo-8Al-6Zr cold-groove-rolled alloy wires was investigated and compared to that of Ti-5.5Mo-8Al-6Zr. Irregularly textured <001>-fiber was formed in Ti-5.5Mo-8Al-6Zr. The Ti-7Mo-8Al-6Zr cold-groove-rolled wire mainly composed of the β phase though α″ martensite was induced by cold-groove-rolling in the Ti-5.5Mo-8Al-6Zr alloy. From the TEM observations of the severely deformed cold-rolled sheet, α″ martensite was assumed to be induced during cold-groove-rolling and trace α″ was assumed to be retained after cold-groove-rolling. This texture is common in bcc metals and corresponds to the <010>α″ -fiber which is formed in the Ti-5.5Mo-8Al-6Zr alloy when the lattice correspondence between β and α″ is considered. On the other hand, the <001>-fiber was strongly developed in the cold-groove-rolled wire with a reduced cross sectional area of 98% following solution treatment, while this texture was not observed in the specimen with a 60% reduced cross sectional area. The texture formed in solution-treated Ti-7Mo-8Al-6Zr alloy wire was similar to that of the Ti-5.5Mo-8Al-6Zr alloy, although the dominant phase in the cold-groove-rolled specimen differed.

    In order to develop new β (bcc) Ti alloys, the Ti-Fe-Sn system was focused and phase constitution, microstructure, mechanical properties of Ti-5mol%Fe-6mol%Sn and Ti-6mol%Fe-3mol%Sn were clarified in addition to aging effect. It was estimated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) that α phase is formed at temperature from 773-779K and that β transus temperature is 1019K in both the alloys. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that, in both alloys, β single phase is formed after the solution treatment (ST) at 1273K followed by water quenching, while α phase is formed after the aging at 773K and 873K for 3.6ks. The formation of α phase is also confirmed by optical microscopy. The volume fraction of α phase reaches to 90% in Ti-5Fe-6Sn and 80% in Ti-6Fe-3Sn after the aging at 873K for 3.6ks. The 0.2% proof stress was increased by aging at 873K from 550MPa to 650MPa in Ti-5Fe-6Sn and 500MPa to 690MPa in Ti-6Fe-3Sn. Besides, apparent Young's modulus measured by dynamic mechanical analysis was raised by the aging treatment. These changes in the mechanical properties were discussed in connection with α phase precipitation. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

    We investigate the temperature dependence of Brillouin scattering properties in perfluorinated graded-index (PFGI-) plastic optical fibers (POFs) in a wide temperature range from -170 to 130°C. The temperature dependence of Brillouin frequency shift is found to be nonlinear at > 84°C; while it shows linear dependences even at -170°C. The Stokes power is maximal at 60 °C and is gradually reduced with decreasing or increasing temperature. Our results indicate that the Brillouin scattering in PFGI-POFs can be exploited to cryogenic-temperature sensing as well as higher-temperature sensing. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

    We investigate the temperature dependences of the Brillouin scattering properties in a perfluorinated graded-index (PFGI-) plastic optical fiber (POF) in a wide temperature range from-160 to 125 °C. The temperature dependences of the Brillouin frequency shift, linewidth, and Stokes power are linear at lower temperature down to-160 °C; while they show nonlinear dependences at higher temperature. These behaviors appear to originate from the partial glass transition of the polymer material.

    Strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) and shape memory effect were investigated in Ti-Cr-Sn β(bcc)-Ti shape memory alloys using strain-rate dip test. There was a trade-off relation between shape recovery strain and SRS. This means that SRS becomes more significant, whereas the shape recovery strain decreases with increasing Cr content. This change in SRS is considered to be a transition of deformation mechanism from non-thermal activation process to thermal activation process with increasing stability of β phase.

    The effect of cyclic deformation on superelastic behavior was investigated in Ti-26Nb and Ti-23Nb-1.0N (at.%) alloys. Cyclic loading-unloading tensile tests with a constant maximum applied strain of 2.5% were carried out until the 500th cycle. With increasing number of cycles, the critical stress for inducing the martensitic transformation decreased and the residual strain increased. In the Ti-26Nb alloy, it was confirmed that the increase of the residual strain during the cyclic deformation was due primarily to the increase in the residual martensites. More stable cyclic deformation behavior was confirmed in the Ti-23Nb-1.0N alloy compared with the Ti-26Nb alloy owing to the higher critical stress for slip.

    本研究は研究代表者が発見した新しい拡散-変位型相変態を利用した高温形状記憶材料の創出を目的としている。この相変態はチタン合金における等温変態であり、直方晶構造を経由することが特徴である。従来のチタン合金においては直方晶構造は原子無拡散のマルテンサイト変態によって生成するものであった。研究代表者は、特殊なチタン合金において加熱または高温での保持によって原子拡散を伴いながらこの直方晶構造の相が現れることを見出した。この相変態は原子拡散を伴う拡散型変態であるが、同時に変位型変態の性質も持ち合わせていることを利用して、形状記憶効果の発現が期待される。
    一般に広く用いられれている形状記憶効果とは、原子無拡散のマルテンサイト変態を利用したものである。本研究では、このような従来の形状記憶合金とは全く異なるメカニズムで形状記憶効果の発現を目指す。
    本年度は、これまでに研究代表者が発見した拡散-変位型相変態が生じるチタン合金において形状回復挙動の有無及び形状回復動作について、基礎的な研究を行った。特に、形状回復ひずみと形状回復温度、回復応力について、単結晶試料を用いた系統的な実験を行った。また、発現した形状回復現象について、金属組織学的なメカニズムを解明するため、X線回折測定とSEM-EBSD測定を行った。
    その結果、研究代表者の推測通り、拡散-変位型相変態を利用して新しい形状回復現象が発現することがわかった。また、形状回復現象が生じるためには直方晶構造での変形を適切に制御する必要があることがわかった。

    本研究では、超温度場3DPを用いて従来法では実現できなかった超準安定β相(super-metastable β phase)を有する新規β型チタン合金の創出を目指す。従来法では析出物が生成するなどして過飽和β相を得ることが不可能であった合金組成においても、超温度場を用いることでβ相を室温で凍結できると考えた。このようにして作製したβ相は極めて安定性が低い(=不安定)はずである。準安定β相を利用した様々な機能性はβ相の安定性が低いほど良好な特性を発現することがわかっている。そこで本研究では,従来のチタン合金の常識を超える機能特性(超微細α/βラメラ組織と高温形状回復現象,超低弾性率化,巨大超弾性回復歪み)の発現を超温度場3DPにより目指すこととした。
    具体的には、準安定チタン合金として既に従来法で研究の実績があるTi-Cr-Sn合金をターゲットとし、β相安定化元素であるCrをなるべく少なく、α安定化元素であるSnをなるべく多くした合金組成において、β相の凍結(CrとSnの強制固溶)を試みた。本年度は従来法ではTi3Snが析出する合金組成において金属3Dプリンティングを用いることで過飽和β相の単相を得ることに成功した。この試料を用いて力学試験及び金属組織学的解析を行った。その結果、本合金系においても既報の結晶配向制御が有効であることがわかった。また、金属3Dプリンティングによって作製した試料では組成にずれが生じることも分かった。次年度は塑性のずれを考慮に入れて合金組成を調整し、機能性の発現を目指す。

    本研究は、外力によって生じる応力誘起マルテンサイト変態の結晶学的理論の再構築を目標にしたものである。形状記憶合金が示す超弾性機能において、応力誘起マルテンサイト変態とその逆変態は機能の中核をなすものである。形状記憶合金の発見以来、これまでに数多くの研究が行われてきた。特に本研究で着目している点は、従来の現象論で説明が出来ない結晶学的特徴が多くの形状記憶合金で実際に観察されていることである。研究代表者はこの現象論との差異の起源を解明し、応力誘起マルテンサイト変態についての基礎的知見を改めて得ることを目指している。
    本年度までの研究は順調に進展しており、応力誘起マルテンサイト変態の際の母相及びマルテンサイト相の格子定数が従来の想定から大きく異なること、またマルテンサイト相の格子定数が応力誘起変態中に変化していることが従来の現象論と実験結果が異なる原因であることがわかっている。本年度はこの主張を更に実験的に裏付けるための放射光In-situ測定(フランス、SOLEIL)を現地の共同研究者とともに行った。これは、単結晶試料に引張応力を加え、その応力下において、マルテンサイト相の単一バリアントを応力誘起させるときの母相とマルテンサイト相の格子定数を精密測定するものである。加えて、本年度は他の超弾性合金における応力誘起マルテンサイト変態についても研究の対象に加え、より一般的な応力誘起マルテンサイト理論の確立を試みた。

    The objective of this project was to generate the superelastic alloys with a quite small stress-hysteresis by using a critical phenomenon introduced by impurities. In this project, therefore, the Ti-based alloy which has a large solid-solution limit for many alloying elements was used. Extreme small stress-hysteresis with about 10 MPa was obtained in the alloys which contain the interstitial elements (oxygen and nitrogen). In addition, the unique behaviors were observed during the stress-induced martensitic transformation in these alloys.

    The objective of this project was to develop the shape memory effect and superelasticity of Ti base shape memory alloys by controlling the slip deformation of martensite phase. It was clarified that the slip deformation of martensite was significantly affected by the degree of shuffling in the martensite crystal structure. Thus, this project was succeeded; the alloy design by controlling the shuffling of martensite is effective to enhance the shape memory and superelastic properties of Ti base shape memory alloys.

    Effects of the magnitude of incompatibility at domain-walls in martensite microstructure of Ti-Ni based shape memory alloys were investigated in this study.Numerical analysis on the incompatibility of domain-walls showed that the incompatibility can be vanished or very small at certain kinds of domain-boundary in Ti-Ni based alloys with B2-B19 or B2-B19' martensitic transformation. One of the alloys which satisfies the condition for the very small incompatibility exhibited no shift in transformation temperature upon thermal cycling more than 200 cycles. This result implies that the super-long life shape memory alloy can be developed in Ti-Ni based alloys.

    Evaluation of size-effect of shape memory properties is necessary because the size of the material is becoming smaller in medical devices such as stents which is made of shape memory alloys. Effects of specimen size on shape memory properties is investigated in Au-based and Ti-based shape memory alloys using micro-testing machine in this study. The stress-induced martensite transformation behavior is independent of the specimen size (in the order of 10 micron meter), whereas superelastic deformation behavior seemed to be affected by the relative size between martensite plates and specimen size.     In shape-change materials such as shape memory alloys and piezoelectric materials used for medical and energy applications, external fields such as force and magnetic field and material functions are deeply related each other。 The origin of the shape change is the domain rearrangement and phase transformation due to the motion of domain homo interface. In order to improve the material functions, the structure and dynamics of the domain homo interface have been clarified for the smooth motion with low friction. Principles for the control of interface structure and lattice softening from the first principle calculations have been established to reduce the friction of motion for the enhancement of higher functionality. Moreover, several multifunctional and high performance new shape change materials have been developed.

    The objective of this study was to clarify the plastic deformation behavior of beta-Ti alloys which have been developed as a new Ni-free shape memory alloy. To systematically investigate the plastic deformation behavior of martensite phase, the single crystalline martensite was fabricated in this study. Four operative plastic deformation modes were observed: (1) {130} twin, (2) {103} twin, (3) <110> slip and (4) <101> slip. These plastic deformation modes in martensite phase corresponds to the {332} twin and <111> slip in the parent beta phase.

    Au-Ti binary and Co added ternary and quaternary alloy systems were used in this study. Several trials were done to fabricate single crystals using OFZ method, but no single crystal was obtained. Probably, some complex phase reactions containing peritectic reaction is related to solidification. Then, instead of single crystal, we used polycrystal alloys for further researches. It was found that Ti-rich offstoichiometric alloys exhibit good mechanical properties, and that aging behavior is not observed in Au-Ti binary alloys but Co-added alloys only. The equilibrium second phase is A15 AuTi3 in the binary system but it is changed to be L12 phase by Co addition. By TEM observations the size of this precipitates is relatively large from sub nm to a few microns, and no clear microstructural change is recognized such as APB and vacancy cluster. Then, the anomalous low temperature aging must be due to the L12 precipitates stabilized by Co addition.

    In this study, the abnormal temperature dependence of shape memory behavior was investigated from the view point of interstitial impurities by in situ x-ray diffraction measurements and in situ transmission electron microscope observation. As a result, the origin of the abnormal temperature dependence of shape memory behavior was nano-sized (about 3nm) lattice modulation structure (nanodomains) which was introduced by interstitial impurities.
