    This chapter describes structural control methods utilizing control engineering techniques. It explores passive, semi-active, and active control devices and their applications in suppressing earthquakes and wind-induced vibrations. Section “Typical Structural-control Devices” describes typical structural control devices from a control-engineering perspective, as well as the theoretical foundations and practical applications of structural control. The most commonly use devices are tuned mass dampers (TMDs) and active TMDs (ATMDs). Related technologies and control methods are explained for them throughout the chapter. Section “Active and Semi-Active Control for Earthquakes” explains and demonstrates structural control devices and systems of active and semi-active control for seismic protection. Several semi-active control studies have validated the effectiveness of the methods using large shaking tables and test specimens. Section “Vibration Control for Wind-induced Vibrations” describes studies of wind-induced vibration suppression. Control methods, including LQR, LQG, H∞, and sliding-mode control (SMC), are applied to TMDs, TMD-like dampers, and other devices. Section “Conclusion” summarizes the main points in the chapter and presents some concluding remarks.

    Viscoelastic (VE) dampers are sensitive to temperature, excitation frequency, and strain level. As they dissipate the kinetic energy from earthquake or wind-induced structural vibrations, their temperature increases from the heat generated, consequently softening their VE materials and lowering their dynamic mechanical properties. Temperature increase can be significant for long-duration loading, but can be limited by heat conduction and convection which depend on damper configuration. The writers analytically explored such effect on the six different dampers by using their previously proposed three-dimensional finite-element analysis method. Results provided better understanding of how heat is generated within the VE material, conducted and stored in different damper parts, and dispersed to the surrounding air. These results also led to characterization of both local (e.g., temperatures, properties, and strain energy density) and global (e.g., hysteresis loops, and stiffness) behavior of VE dampers, and provided a framework for a new simplified one-dimensional (1D) modeling approach for time-history analysis. This new proposed 1Dmethod greatly improves the computation time of the previously proposed long-duration method coupling fractional time-derivatives VE constitutive rule with 1D heat
    transfer analysis. Unlike the previous method, it idealizes uniform shear strain and VE material property distributions for computational efficiency, but still simulating non-uniform temperature distribution along the thickness direction of the VE material. Despite the approximations, it accurately predicts VE damper global responses.

    Time-history analyses are usually performed to design and examine the performance of tall structures subjected to strong wind loading. An accurate estimate of the time history of wind forces is required to carry out time-history analysis. However, previous studies conducted to estimate the time-history of wind forces require a lot of priori information, such as complete structural parameters and wind-induced responses, which are generally not available in actual conditions. This work addresses the estimation of the time-history of wind forces acting on each story of a ten degree-of-freedom model under the assumption that only the mass and acceleration responses measured on three stories are known. First, cubic spline interpolation is used to determine the unknown acceleration responses and frequency domain integration is used to obtain the velocity and displacement responses. Then, unknown structural parameters (particularly stiffness and damping) are estimated by the Frequency Domain Decomposition method. Finally, the obtained responses and structural parameters are used to estimate the wind forces using the equation of motion. It is demonstrated that the proposed methodology can accurately estimate the input wind forces on the structure.

    The response-spectrum-based design method has been developed for linear active base-isolation to eliminate numerical simulations and trial-and-error testing. On the other hand, gain-scheduling is an effective control method for nonlinear systems and provides a way to apply linear system design methods. In this paper, we extend the response-spectrum-based design method to incorporate the gain-scheduling control strategy for active base-isolated structures with nonlinear viscous dampers (NVDs), aiming to effectively control these structures and simplify the design process. The gain scheduling of the controller is achieved based on the linear time-varying damping coefficient of NVDs. The active base-isolated structure with NVDs is described as a pseudo linear parameter varying model. The stability of the system is proven and analyzed using a common Lyapunov function. Moreover, this paper proposes a control-force spectrum for estimating the maximum required control force without numerical simulations. Numerical examples are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed spectra. Finally, we also detail the design process and verify the design method through a design example. The results show that this method directly determines the design parameters from the spectra and satisfies the design criteria of response and control force without numerical simulations, offering a promising design approach for active control of buildings with nonlinear energy dissipating devices.

    Residual deformation can potentially impact the seismic behavior of base-isolated buildings. Although the presence of residual deformation in tall base-isolated structures during typhoons is well-documented, there remain several unresolved aspects in this regard. Thus, the objective of this study is to establish a connection between the response of a 3D model and a MDOF model using long-term wind forces generated from typhoon simulations. Through a wind-induced responses analysis encompassing along-wind, across-wind, and torsional effects, it has been clarified that the input of multi-directional wind forces is imperative for accurate residual deformation estimation. Furthermore, the study also discussed the effect of torsion on the base isolation layer when using the 3D model.

    This paper devises a new method for estimating the maximum response and maximum control force for high-rise base-isolated buildings with active structural control (active base isolation) to simplify the conventional complex design procedure. While active base isolation has emerged as a prominent solution for achieving high control performance, its design process is inherently complex, particularly when applied to high-rise buildings where wind loads become prominent. To address this problem, we propose a streamlined method inspired by the gust factor methodology widely used in conventional passive wind-resistant designs. This method estimates the maximum response and maximum control force without the need for numerical simulations. We first construct an equivalent passive model of a multi-degree-of-freedom control system to theoretically compute the dynamics of the system. Based on the constructed equivalent passive model and then propose a method to calculate the mean displacement and mean control force using only the static equilibrium of this model. Furthermore, we extend the conventional gust factor approach to active base isolation to estimate the maximum displacement and maximum control force for active base isolation without the need for numerical simulations. We validate our methods through a series of numerical examples, incorporating key parameters such as feedback gain, aspect ratio of building, return period of wind force, and stiffness of isolation. Numerical verifications show that the mean response and mean control force are estimated by the static equilibrium of the proposed equivalent passive model. Moreover, the maximum response and maximum control force can be estimated by the proposed gust factors. Our methods can be applied for feedback control systems using a given feedback gain.

    Time history analysis is sometimes used in an estimation of the wind-inducedresponse of a tall building. However, time history analysis for the wind-inducedbehavior by the ensemble-averaging wind force costs much computation time. This paper provides a reliable prediction method for the wind-induced response of the vis-coelastic (VE)-damped system considering its frequency dependency coupling with frame damping effect with frequency spectral method. VE damper used in high-risebuildings can dissipate energy from excessive vibration induced by seismic or wind excitation.Fractional derivative (FD) model of VE dampers can express VE frequency dependency clearly, but it is computationally complicated. The herein proposed prediction method is based on frequency spectral method and evaluated wind-induced responses of the single degree of freedom (SDOF) VE-damped system with a FD VEdamper subjected to the respective 1st modal along- and across-wind force. The maximum error of wind-induced responses of the VE-damped system, such as the root mean square value of responses, the total input energy, and the total energy dissipation, is within 5%. In summary, the proposed method had high accuracy in the prediction of wind-induced responses of the VE-damped system considering its frequency dependency with the coupling effect of frame damping.

    This paper presents a new method that uses the equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) approach to estimate the wind load of a seismically isolated building. To verify the control performance of wind-resistant design methods and devices, wind-load data are important for structural design of skyscrapers. However, wind loads cannot be measured directly and is usually estimated based on structural responses. Previous studies focused on a building model in which the damping coefficient is proportional to a linear combination of mass and stiffness (referred to as Rayleigh damping). These existing methods cannot be directly applied to a seismically isolated building because its damping is not Rayleigh damping. Moreover, a structural model usually contains uncertainties caused by modeling errors that cause the degradation of estimation performance. To solve these problems, this paper combines the EID approach with a robust control strategy to design a wind-load estimator for a seismically isolated building with uncertainties. First, the configuration of an EID-based estimation system is shown. Next, a robust wind-load estimator is presented. Then, simulations are carried out to demonstrate the validity of the presented method using wind-load data obtained from a wind-tunnel test. An 11-degree-of-freedom model of a seismically isolated building is used for numerical verification. The results show that, even if a model contains 20% uncertainties, the presented method accurately estimates the wind load of a seismically isolated building.

    An isolation layer composed of isolators and steel dampers in base-isolated tall buildings can dissipate wind-induced energy via repeated elasto-plastic deformation. Its energy dissipation can be used to estimate its wind-induced responses and the fatigue damage in the steel dampers. Computationally costly time history analyses using multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) models suggest that some structural parameters influence the isolation-layer energy dissipation. However, using common single-degree-of-freedom (CS) models cannot fully capture such influences (e.g., those caused by the damping ratio and the natural period of the upper structure). Hence, this paper proposes a more accurate new equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (ES) model to estimate the isolation-layer energy dissipation in base-isolated tall buildings under strong winds. The ES model considers the influence of structural parameters and uses the first mode shapes of the MDOF models. It is as computationally efficient as, but is more accurate than, the CS model. The results indicate that it can estimate the isolation-layer energy dissipation as closely as MDOF models of base-isolated tall-building under strong winds.

    The fractional derivative (FD) model is one kind of numerical model of viscoelastic (VE) damper, which can describe the behavior of the frequency sensitivity of VE damper well with some empirical parameters. However, the FD model is difficult to apply to practice design because of its complex calculation. Compared with the FD model, the integer derivative (ID) models are widely used as the VE damper equipped in the high-rise building. However, ID models lack consideration of frequency sensitivity, which significantly affects their accuracy. To consider frequency sensitivity in the ID model, this study attempted to use the 4-element and 6-element models of ID models to approximate the FD model, easily describing the VE characteristic of the damper. The wind forces of 500-year-return periods were employed to analyze the influence of the frequency sensitivity of the VE damper on wind-induced responses and energy dissipation. The results of this study showed that the 4-element and 6-element models not only matched frequency sensitivities well to the FD model in the low-frequency region of wind excitation but also had good agreements with the FD model in wind-induced responses and energy dissipation. Based on the findings in this study, the 4-element and 6-element models were recommended as numerical models for the wind-resistant design of high-rise buildings with VE dampers. It helps improve the wind-induced behavior simulation of VE dampers considering their frequency sensitivity in high accuracy without massive experimental cost.

    The active structural control (ASC) has been applied to base-isolated buildings to achieve a high-damping system. The critical step for designing an ASC system is selecting control parameters and isolation parameters that satisfy the design restrictions. However, the conventional methods are limited in theoretically estimating the maximum control force, which requires great demand for trial-and-error approaches and numerical simulations. This paper constructed the equivalent model of the feedback control system that theoretically expresses the dependence of vibration characteristics (natural period and damping ratio) of the control system on the feedback gain. Then, the control-force spectrum is proposed that estimates the maximum control force for a feedback control system, adjusting both the natural period and damping ratio of the control system. The maximum responses and control force are estimated without additional numerical simulations and trial-and-error approaches using the equivalent model and control-force spectrum. Moreover, a design method was devised for determining the allowance range of the vibration characteristics of structures (damping ratio and natural period) and controllers that satisfy the design limitations (maximum responses and maximum control force). The design method does not require trial-and-error and numerical simulations, thus simplifying the design procedure. Finally, this paper uses numerical examples and a design example to verify the validity of the control-force spectrum and design method.

    Active control has been applied to base-isolated buildings to achieve high control performance. A base-isolated building with active control has many design parameters, such as parameters of the superstructure, isolator, viscous dampers, and hysteretic dampers. The conventional control-system design uses trial-and-error approaches to select these design parameters and numerical simulations to estimate the responses of the system, causing a limited design outlook. In this study, we presented a spectrum-based design method for active base-isolated buildings with both viscous and hysteretic dampers for selecting the parameters of the isolator, viscous damper, steel hysteretic damper, and controller. The presented method estimates the maximum responses and maximum control force of the control system only using response spectra of the design earthquake wave, thus eliminating trial-and-error approaches and numerical simulations. Numerical design examples were also used to show the details of the design procedure and the validity of the presented method.

    This paper presents a response evaluation of a Passive controlled building with viscous dampers considering its performance decrement under long-period ground motion. From the long-time sinusoidal wave test results using a full-scale viscous damper, it was shown that the performance decrement of the viscous damper was based on energetic density. An analytical model of the viscous damper considering the performance decrement caused by long-period cyclic loading was proposed, and its accuracy was confirmed by comparing with test results. The time history response analysis using a 20-story model with the proposed viscous dampers was performed. It was verified that the response of the passive controlled building with viscous dampers increases under certain long-period ground motions. Especially, for vibration control of a building designed with insufficient dampers, it was found that the response increased with the influence of the performance decrement of the damper when the long-period ground motion was received.

    This paper presents a new control system that suppresses not only the relative displacement, but also the absolute acceleration of a structure. It uses the modified-equivalent-input-disturbance (MEID) approach to design a control system. The control of the absolute acceleration is very important to protect properties and people from a large earthquake, and has been considered to be a difficult problem. To deal with this problem, this study constructed a modified EID control system to achieve satisfactory control performance.

    A vibration control system for an automated warehouse was developed that can be applied to
    existing warehouses as well as newly built ones. The device used for this system is the “postinstalled
    mass damper” that can be post installed on the cargo storage space in an automated
    warehouse. This damper has a large mass that causes a sustainable effect of reducing the
    response across a wide range of natural frequencies of an automated warehouse, which vary
    depending on the number of stacked cargoes and their weight. The results of the shaking table
    test demonstrated that the fall of cargoes by the earthquake ground motion could be prevented
    by using this damper because the accelerations of the rack were reduced to 50%-70%. Moreover,
    this effect was confirmed by the analysis conducted with the proposed model. The acceleration of
    the rack top was reduced to 80% and the maximum slip displacement of the cargoes was reduced
    to 25%.

    A new method of active structural control, which suppresses vibrations in civil structures due to seismic
    shocks, has been developed. It is based on the equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) approach, which estimates
    the effect of a seismic shock and produces an equivalent control signal on the control input channel
    to compensate for it. A system designed by this method can be viewed as a conventional state-feedback
    control system with an EID estimator plugged in. Unlike conventional control systems, this one has two
    degrees of freedom, which yields better control performance. Simulations on a model of a ten-degree-offreedom
    building demonstrated the validity of the method. In addition, the effect of the parameters of the
    low-pass filter in the EID estimator on the vibration suppression performance was examined. A comparison
    revealed that this method is superior to a linear-quadratic regulator and sliding-mode control.

    This paper presents a new design method for an active tuned-mass-damper (AMD) system. A tuned-mass damper (TMD) is one of the common passive-control methods. A
    TMD reduces a response for resonance frequency. Recently, an AMD, which applies a control engineering for a TMD, is used to increase control performance. Usually, the TMD and the control system of an AMD are designed separately and some nonstructural member or nonlinear characteristics are ignored.
    This paper presents a simple method that designs both the TMD and the control system of the AMD simultaneously and considers the uncertainties of a structure. The numerical example uses a
    single-degree-of-freedom model with an AMD and several earthquake waves. The numerical example demonstrates that the
    presented method suppresses the displacement without increasing absolute acceleration.

    This paper presents a new structural control method for the combination of passive-base isolation and active structural control based on the equivalent-input disturbance (EID) approach. Passive base-isolation enlarges the natural period of a high-rise building, and results in the suppression of the absolute acceleration of buildings. However, it increases displacement of the base-isolation story and may exceed its allowable range. To deal with this problem, the combination of a passive base-isolation and an active structural control has been the focus in structural control. Since suppressing absolute acceleration and inter-story drift are most important to protect a building, property, and people from a large earthquake, this study constructs a new activestructural-control system based on the EID approach that considers absolute acceleration and inter-story drift.

    Continuous structural health monitoring of a steel building specimen on the full-scale shaking table test is conducted to investigate modal properties of a passively controlled steel building subjected to large earthquakes. Changes in the dynamic properties are evaluated from the continuous ambient vibration test, which are related to damage detectability from ambient vibration or earthquake observation on real buildings. The results in the paper are summarized as follows: (1) The shifts in the first natural frequency due to the construction works and seismic experiences can be detected clearly. (2) Within tiny deformation of ambient vibration different characteristics in natural frequency or damping factors is observed in use of different types of seismic control devices.

    Vibration generator tests have been often utilized to grasp the dynamic characteristics of building, and to check the performances of passive control devices. This paper proposes an experimental method, which can simulate the shaking table test, using only one vibration generator. In this method, the vibration force is calculated by using the time history of velocity floor response obtained from the shaking table tests. This paper shows the control method of the vibration generator to get the force which is calculated with the method to simulate the shaking table test. Vibration generator tests are conducted with presented methods, and these compared with the shaking table tests. The agreement of response between the vibration generator tests and the shaking table tests are confirmed.

    This paper discusses the properties of viscoelastic damper during long duration random vibration. In this study, the long duration model of viscoelastic constitutive rule, which is based on fractional time-derivative model & capable for heat transfer analysis, is used to evaluate viscoelastic damper properties such as temperature dependence, stiffness etc. Analytical results show that temperature inside the viscoelastic material body become stable by effect of heat conduction & heat transfer even if the damper is vibrating randomly. In addition, this paper proposes a simplified evaluation method using sinusoidal-wave to substitute random time history data properties. Accuracy of proposed evaluation method is validated by comparing with analysis result using random time history data.

    This paper discusses the wind tunnel tests for a tall building model having either viscous or visco-elastic damper under the turbulent boundary layer flow. The wind tunnel tests are carried out either the across- or along-wind direction for the viscous and the visco-elastic damper systems, respectively. This wind test set-up includes a special measurement system to obtain the damper hysteetic loop, then the response property of damper and system are discussed by the referring to the obtained loop. In case of the severe wind speed, the response of visco-elastic system is smaller than the viscous system because the stiffness of visco-elastic damper contributes to the stiffness of system.

    Viscoelastic damper dissipates energy through shear deformation of the viscoelastic material, and this causes temperature rise and softening of the material. Under long duration load, however, significant heat conduction and transfer can occur and control the temperature-rise effects. These and frequency sensitivities are included in the two analysis methods proposed: The first method combines three-dimensional heat transfer analysis and static analysis using a common finite element model of the damper, and estimates damper dynamic properties under long duration load. The second combines one-dimensional heat transfer analysis and viscoelastic constitutive rule using fractional time-derivatives of stress and strain, and it calculates step-by-step the force-deformation time histories of the damper. Good accuracies of both analysis methods are demonstrated by comparing with the results of experiments applying cyclic loading of long duration.

    In this paper, the wind tunnel test method for a building with either viscous damper or visco-elastic damper is developed. The test set-up includes a special measurement system to obtain the damper hysteresis loop, which is extremely useful to understand the dynamic characteristics of the damper and the system. The damper and system responses obtained from the free vibration tests and the wind tunnel tests using uniform flow are discussed. Three-dimensional heat transfer analysis and static analysis using the same finite element model of the visco-elastic damper are performed in order to estimate the temperature distribution of the visco-elastic damper under the wind loading.

    This paper proposes a fast and sufficiently accurate algorithm for calculating fractional time-derivatives of stress and strain in the viscoelastic damper. The algorithm also has an advantage of requiring substantially smaller memory space. At every step, numerical integration using past stress and strain data is required, but the proposed algorithm needs only a small portion of such data: it selects and stores the data at much longer interval than the original algorithm. The algorithm is applied to two types of viscoelastic damper models, which are "short duration model" and "long duration model". Its numerical efficiency and accuracy are demonstrated through comparison with the original and precise algorithm.

    The purpose of this study is to propose the evaluation method of passive control structure with viscous and viscoelastic dampers considering its performance decrement under long-period ground motion. An analytical model of the viscous damper that considered the performance decrement caused by long-duration cyclic loading was proposed, and its accuracy was confirmed by comparing with test results. The time history response analysis using some building models with the proposed viscous dampers was performed. It was verified that the response of the passive control structure with viscous dampers increases under some long-period ground motions. In addition, the 3D analysis model of the real size viscoelastic damper which can simulated not only inside temperature but also its performance decrement caused by temperature-rise was constructed.

    This study addresses unified evaluation and design methods for the increased varieties of vibration-controlled buildings and base-isolated buildings against the seismic attacks. It also considers protection of non-structural components. The contents are summarized below:
    (1) Damper modeling method covering a wide range of damper hysteretic characteristics, (2) Simplified structure modeling and design methods based on time-history analyses, (3) Prediction method of floor response spectra predicting the peak responses of non-structural components, and (4) Experiments and analyses of electric cable-tray system as one of non-structural components subjected to seismic vibration.

    Seismic isolation has been applied increasingly to super-tall buildings with high aspect ratios. The applications however can lead to the tension failure of the laminated rubber isolators due the upward force against the isolators, and the technology to allow uplift of the isolator was developed is in actual use now. However, since performance of such technology has not been verified, the following studies were conducted:
    (1)A 3-D frame model was created to simulate seismic behavior of a 20-story base-isolated bldg. that uses such technology and at has many sensors of acc., dis., and strains. The model located in the campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology is found to accurately simulate the bldg. behavior recorded during the past earthquake.
    (2)Based on the 3-D dynamic analyses of the model using many different ground motion records, it's observed that the building with such technology could become critical in some cases and require further study on the uplift of base-isolated bldgs.

    In the present study, it has aimed to evaluate damage and the damage situation when a huge long-period ground motion acts on the high rise building, and to propose the damage reduction measures with a vibration control device.
    The accumulation plastic strain magnification and the experimental methodology of the edge of the beam were investigated. The vibration control reinforcement that partially established the oil damper and the steel-made damper in the lower layer part was proposed. A high vibration control performance was confirmed from the response analysis results. An analytical model considering the performance decrease index of the vibration control damper by the repetition for a long time was built. The response considering the performance decrease by the seismic response analysis was evaluated. The response considering the performance decrease by using the response analysis results was evaluated.

    In the present study, it is a purpose to clarify the wind response characteristic by using the past five years observation and the wind tunnel test result for the high rise isolated building about the translational and the torsional vibration when the wind external force acts on.
    It was confirmed that the torsional vibration reached the value equal with the translational vibration according to the velocity of the wind and the wind direction. The method for calculating shearing force that acted on the seismic isolation layer was proposed from the top mean wind speed. The evaluated-stiffness was about 1.5 times as large as the design. It is thought that natural frequency of the record reached a high value compared with the design because the stiffness when the seismic isolator is slight deformation is high. It was confirmed that the prediction response value that used the wind tunnel test result gave the evaluation of the safety side compared with the observation.

    In this study, the properties of viscoelastic damper during long duration random vibration are discussed. Analytical and experimental results show that temperature inside the viscoelastic material body become stable by effect of heat conduction & heat transfer even if the damper is vibrating randomly. In addition, the simplified evaluation method using sinusoidal-wave to substitute random time history data are propertied.
