    Abstract

    Fluid pressure is closely associated with various pathological conditions. Several studies have reported correlations between fluid pressure and shear wave velocity (SWV) in shear wave elastography (SWE). However, the mechanism underlying these correlations, as well as spatial characteristics of SWV distribution, remain unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of elevated fluid pressure on shear wave propagation through theoretical modeling and SWE measurements in both phantom and ex vivo samples. The proposed simulation model, which incorporates Neo-Hookean restoring forces, revealed that increased fluid pressure raises SWV near fluid regions. These trends were consistent with experimental results, which also demonstrated the formation of high SWV regions near the fluid under increased fluid pressure. These findings validate the proposed model and indicate its potential for estimating internal fluid pressure based on spatial distribution of SWV.

    Abstract

    In soil health monitoring, understanding the spatial distribution of organic and inorganic soil components is crucial. However, these components are currently measured mainly by methods that involve destructive processing. Therefore, this study proposes a non-destructive method for visualizing their distribution in soil using high-frequency ultrasound. Specifically, we evaluated acoustic-impedance imaging with an 80 MHz ultrasonic transducer, which provides a spatial resolution of several tens of micrometers. First, to verify the effectiveness of the method, we investigated mineral identification in a granite specimen composed solely of inorganic material. The results confirmed that mineral species could be distinguished based on differences in acoustic-impedance distribution with a cross-correlation-based analysis. Furthermore, by applying the method to soil aggregates, we demonstrated non-destructive, simultaneous visualization of the spatial distributions of organic and inorganic matter. These findings indicate that high-frequency ultrasound is a promising tool for non-destructive soil characterization.

    Kotsuzumi is a membranophone used in the traditional Japanese performing art of Noh. So far, there are few studies about kotsuzumi. In this study, to reveal the component of kotsuzumi’s sound, we experimentally verified the acoustic characteristics of kotsuzumi. Acoustic physics experiments were conducted using paper pipes, clay, pendulum, and carbon paper. Loudspeaker and microphone were used to produce and record sound, respectively. First, the characteristics of the acoustic resonance inside the difference cavity shapes of the bodies were measured. Second, vibration modes of the membrane and the body were measured. Finally, a professional performer played kotsuzumi to verify the measured acoustic characteristics. We found that a sound around 200 Hz was due to (0,1) mode of the front membrane of kotsuzumi, a sound around 800 Hz was due to the characteristics of the body as a resonator, and a sound around 1580 Hz was due to the vibration of the kotsuzumi’s body itself.

    There have been few reports on the generation of acoustic cavitation and nonlinear acoustic phenomena using high-intensity ultrasound in the high-frequency range (tens to hundreds of MHz). Therefore, we fabricated a focused ultrasound transducer with a 3D shape by utilizing a piezoelectric crystal film produced via a hydrothermal synthesis method, taking advantage of its capability to form free-standing films. Additionally, it was confirmed that bubbles remaining without collapsing were ultra-fine bubbles (UFBs). Under the same ultrasonic irradiation conditions, essential oils and water were emulsified, and it was confirmed that the particle size of the essential oil droplets was less than 60 nm.

    The number of patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) has been increasing for over a decade, and teeth clenching is believed to be the cause. Patients with TMD are characterized by stiff and rigid masseter muscles, however, the relationship between teeth clenching and masseter muscle stiffness remains unclear because a method for measuring masseter muscle stiffness has not been established. The purpose of this study was to establish a method for measuring the stiffness of the masseter muscle using ultrasound. In this study, an ultrasonic device was placed in contact with the body surface, and shear waves were generated in the living body by acoustic radiation force or mechanical vibration. The propagation velocity of the shear waves was measured, and the elastic modulus was estimated. The relationship between fatigue tests, massage effects, and elastic properties was investigated. In addition, a method for visualizing muscle fibers was examined.

    In the medical and nursing-care fields, there is an increasing demand for tactile sensor technology that has spatial resolution equal to or higher than that of fingers and is as soft as human skin. In this study, we investigated a soft tactile sensor that can detect the distribution of force by a simple configuration such as a speaker, a microphone, and a sound waveguide using elastic tube. In this research, the frequency characteristic, T(f), for the deformation at an arbitrary position was used as the acoustic model. Based on the model, the displacement and the attenuation characteristics, and the spatial resolution was investigated. In addition, the relationship between the vibration mode and phase due to bending, the displacement and attenuation characteristics with respect to the shape of the pipe were studied. Furthermore, we fabricated a piezoelectric vibrator that drives at high frequencies up to 1 MHz in the air, and conducted evaluation experiments.

    The KNbO3 films were deposited by hydrothermal method. It is known that the hydrothermal method is able to fabricate high quality piezoelectric films. In this study, we measured sound pressures and acoustic radiation pressures at resonant frequency with prototype high-frequency ultrasonic transducer using thickness mode of hydrothermal KNbO3 films.
    The resonance frequency and radiated sound pressure of the prototype KNbO3 ultrasonic transducers of focusing type was measured by hydrophone. And, the radiated sound pressure has a linearity relationship between the applied voltages until 3 MPa at 10MHz. And the maximum pressure was approximately 4MPa or more. This value is very high intensity at high frequency and enough value for several high intensity ultrasonic applications with nonlinear acoustics.

    Recently, demand for flexible and distributed load sensor is increasing in various fields such as tactile sensing in robot. However, load sensors have many problems in lack of flexibility, complex wiring, and discrete measurement since they are based on electrical/electronic devices. We have developed one-dimensional distributed load sensors utilizing acoustic frequency responses of elastic tubes. Two-dimensional load sensors by making an acoustic waveguide on a rubber substrate have been proposed. We also investigated the acoustic characteristics in elastic tubes.
