    ABSTRACT

A thorough understanding of the dynamics of the seismic isolators is essential for evaluating the seismic response of seismically isolated structures. However, the loading tests of full‐scale seismic isolators are limited because of the capacity of the testing facilities. Consequently, a new full‐scale testing facility—E‐Isolation—was built in Japan. The force measurement system using the reaction beam and measurement links is a unique characteristic of E‐Isolation; it helps in preventing the contamination of friction and inertial forces of the moving platen. However, the inertial force of the reaction beam can slightly contaminate the measured force in the dynamic loading test. This study aims to establish the force measurement method for E‐Isolation considering the dynamics of the testing facility. The impact test is conducted to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the reaction beam. The dominant frequencies and mode shapes are identified via frequency domain decomposition. The simple force measurement method is proposed based on this result. The lowpass filter is used to simplify the inertial force of the reaction beam. This method also considers the tradeoff between attenuation and phase delay of the filter, and can be applied to real‐time hybrid simulation. A verification test is conducted with an oil damper; the results indicate that the proposed method achieves good accuracy in measuring the specimen force. Lastly, dynamic loading tests are conducted on a full‐scale seismic isolator for bridges. The result indicates that the equivalent viscous damping of the seismic isolator for bridges is much higher than that for buildings.

This paper reports an outline of reconnaissance results of 74 steel school buildings including 50 gymnasiums damaged by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The structural, non-structural, and overall damage have been ranked based on “Standard for Post-earthquake Damage Evaluation of Damaged Buildings”. Structural damage similar to that reported in previous earthquakes was observed. On the other hand, some buildings were found to be rotated due to foundation damage. As for non-structural damage, severe damage caused by inappropriate connections was observed. However, the removal of ceilings in large spaces was indicated to be effective in reducing damage.

Autoclaved lightweight concrete (ALC) panel exterior walls are widely used in Japan, because they are expected to have high deformation capacity. However, during an earthquake, not only the in-plane deformation but also the out-of-plane inertial force are likely to act on the exterior walls. In this paper, combined in-plane and out-of-plane loading tests were conducted on ALC panel exterior walls. It was found that the deflection due to the out-of-plane load resulted in the earlier bearing state when the wall deform in the in-plane direction and the damage to the ALC panel exterior wall depends on the mounting hardware.

A new full-scale seismic isolation test facility named “E-Isolation” has been developed and adopted as a new system that can directly measure the reaction force of the device, excluding the friction force generated in the bearing under the moving platen and the inertial force due to the weight of the platen. In this paper, several experiments were conducted to verify the accuracy of the measurement system in “E-Isolation” under construction. The results of various experiments showed that each component of “E-Isolation” performed as expected in the design, and the measurement system was able to measure data accurately.

In recent earthquakes, it has been reported that members supporting air-conditioners (suspension support members) have been cyclically deformed and fractures at the suspension source or equipment support. The fall of the equipment due to the fracture of suspension support members is a serious damage that directly leads to the loss of building functions. In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate the stiffness, strength, and low cycle fatigue characteristics of the suspension support members. Based on these findings, the results of the study on the necessary strength of the suspension support members were presented.

Recent destructions of structures due to insufficient isolator deformation capacity have led to demands for greater seismic redundancy in seismic isolation design. For a friction pendulum system (FPS), the effect of bidirectional behavior of earthquakes on the maximum response and its effect on friction heating, temperature, and in turn on the maximum response can be significant. However, the extent of these effects under different FPS design parameters and different types of ground motions (GMs) is still not clear. In this study, an analytical model of double concave FPS considering the coupling effect of friction heating and bidirectional behavior was proposed and validated by bidirectional earthquake response orbits, which reflect the characteristics of both GMs and FPSs. Then, the effects of bidirectional GM and corresponding bidirectional temperature change on the response were investigated under different types of strong GMs. Finally, a performance‐based design method with a bidirectional‐effect‐compensation mechanism was proposed. For double concave friction pendulum bearings with PTFE‐related layers, it was found that the bidirectional behavior of earthquakes will amplify the maximum isolator displacement by an average of 110–210% (60 MPa) and the maximum superstructure acceleration by an average of 100–140% (60 MPa) under strong GMs (PGV‐C1 > 0.2 m/s) and optimum design parameters. The amplification ratio is not only influenced by GM characteristics but also highly related to the design parameters and friction‐heating effect of DCFPS.

Metal panels formed by bending metal plates are widely used as non-structural exterior walls. They must be able to follow the story drift during earthquakes without losing important functions and falling out. This paper describes two in -plane cyclic loading tests: one-unit of metal exterior wall with one metal panel and multiple-unit of metal exterior wall attached to one-story, one-bay steel frame. Experimental results showed that the deformation limit for continuous use of the wall is story drift angle of 1/120 to 1/100 rad, and that the deformation limit for falling out of the wall is story drift angle of 1/33 to 1/25 rad.

In Japan, non-structural exterior walls consisted of metal panels are widely used for low- and medium-rise buildings. It is important to experimentally verify that the exterior walls can follow the story drift of the structural frame during a major earthquake without damage or falling off.

In this paper, in-plane loading tests were conducted on one unit of non-structural exterior walls using metal panels to confirm the deformation following capacity when subjected to large earthquakes. In addition, the ultimate state corresponding to the falling out of the metal panels was observed.

This study discusses connection strength of braces with various cross-sectional shapes. The monotonic tensile tests were carried out to investigate effects of connection detail on the connection strength. As a result, the ultimate strength basically increases in proportion to the number of bolts at the connection, regardless of the cross-sectional shape of the brace. Also, the ultimate strength of connection with more than 5 bolts does not increase compared to that of connection with 5 bolts. Finally, the equations of the ultimate strength for each cross-sectional shape are proposed.

A reconnaissance of steel school gymnasium damaged by the earthquake off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture on February 13, 2021 has been conducted. These gymnasiums were also damaged in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, and have been repaired or strengthened. In the two gymnasiums, severe damage to non-structural components occurred again. It means that restoration to the original condition would have caused the damage to recur. In the other one, all of the additional braces for strengthening were fractured. It has the complicated structural system, indicates that how to repair or strengthen should be discussed more.

Metal work refers to a series of processes that manufactures and constructs various metal finishing materials. In this paper, three steps of fundamental experiments of bolted joints in metal work were conducted. The test results show that the slotted hole reduces slip coefficient by about 30% and the slip coefficient of the surface treatments for rust and corrosion prevention is about half smaller than that of the surface in high strength bolted friction joints. Furthermore, from the experiments on the examples of metal finishing materials, the structural safety of the bolted joint against external forces was investigated.

From a viewpoint of continuous use of buildings after an earthquake, it is important to understand the behavior and damage progress of non-structural elements such as dry partition wall under a large deformation owing to earthquake, and to establish a method to monitor the condition of non-structural element in a qualitative manner as well as in a quantitative manner.

In this paper, first the past studies on loading experiments for dry partition wall were summarized, showing that enough studies considering the effect of opening and the behavior of walls located away from beam location have not been done. Based on the review of past studies, a full-scale static loading test of steel moment frame with dry partition walls was performed. The specimen has two frames; one frame has a flat wall without opening and the other frame has a wall with a door opening and a corner in the frame. In the latter frame, some part of the wall is placed not directly under the beam. Static cyclic loading was applied, increasing the peak story drift up to as large as 1/33. In the experiment, visual observation was performed at each loading step. Rotation angle and vibration of the walls was also measured using MEMS acceleration sensors.

The flat wall had relatively few board cracks and other damage. However, the boards on upper layer in the center part of the wall began to rock at the loading step of a 1/100 story drift. Then at 1/50, the boards showed out-of-plane deformation and when unloading after reaching 1/33, boards fell off.

On the other hand, on the wall with the opening, a gap opening between the boards, and a crack on the L-shaped boards at the corner of the opening were observed at a relatively small story drift angle of 1/400.

Regarding the wall located away from the beam, damage was concentrated on the wall which was orthogonal to the frame and not under the beam. The wall rotated around the vertical axis, and this was thought to be due to the difference of trackability to the structure between walls. Due to this behavior, a crack at the corner of the wall was seen at the story drift angle of 1/400, and at 1/75 the upper track opened, and studs were seen to come off.

The rotation angle and the vibration of the walls were measured by MEMS acceleration sensors. The measurement result corresponded well with the damage observation. It was found from the measurement results that there were signs before damage and behavior of walls could be visually confirmed. Moreover, it was found that the vibration frequency of the damaged wall decreased (period became longer) as the loading progressed. This change may be representing the damage development in the wall. From these observations, it was confirmed that the MEMS acceleration sensor can capture small movement implying damage in partition wall in a quantitative manner, but more study should be necessary about the relationship between the measured deformation and the degree of damage and performance degradation, to utilize accelerometers for structural health monitoring of partition walls.

Power actuated fasteners (PAF) are fasteners shaped like smaller construction nails which are installed using a driving tool with enhanced power and are one of the preferred tools for connecting metal decking due to the fast installation time and consistent quality. However, not enough research has been conducted on the fundamental strengths of PAF connections and structural engineers are concerned about their effect on structural components, especially plastic deformation capacity. Therefore, in this paper, evaluation models for the tensile and shear strengths of PAF joints were discussed through experiments as well as observations on the JSSC requirements for PAF spacing and edge distance of both beam flange and deck plate.

2 types of tensile tests were conducted to investigate the ultimate strength and failure modes of tensile loading on PAF joints. In tension, PAFs have 2 main failure modes, which are pin pull-out failure and deck plate pull-over failure. Pin pull-out strength can be evaluated by multiplying shear stress by the contact area between the pin and the steel embedment. For the pin pull-out failure, the maximum strength is in proportion to the contact area, and the ultimate shear stress was obtained for each shape of PAF. On the other hand, deck plate pull-over failure was observed in specimens with lower strength of steel grade, SPCC. It is assumed that deck plate pull-over failure is caused by shear stress applied at the lateral surface of a cylindrical area at the deck plate with the diameter of the pin head and the thickness of the deck plate. Furthermore, it could be shown that the evaluation model based on deck plate shear failure around the pin head can evaluate the maximum strength obtained from the experiments.

Shear tests were conducted mainly to observe the ultimate strength and failure modes of the deck plate in shear. The failure modes are classified into tear-out and bearing of the deck plate. The experiment results showed that the JSSC requirement for edge distance of deck plate is effective to avoid the tear-out failure of deck plate. On the other hand, the bearing strength of deck plate could be evaluated by an equation from the AISI standard. Finally, compared to puddle welding conducted in previous researches, it is found that these strengths are proportionate to the PAF's diameter.

Although the structural system was slightly damaged, damage to the nonstructural components could lead to the complete or partial closure of buildings. Lessons learned from recent earthquakes indicate that protecting the nonstructural components is very important for structural engineers to realize functional continuity of buildings after earthquakes. Especially from the damage of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, a number of research has been conducted to investigate the structural behavior and damage mechanisms of ceilings as non-structural components. And based on the research, seismic design procedures were established to avoid the fall of ceilings in order to save human life and to keep functional continuity. On the other hand, a reconnaissance of recent earthquakes reported that light-gauge steel (LGS) stud partition walls were also damaged, and its damage led to the complete or partial closure of buildings. Following the previous research project for ceilings, a number of research on LGS partition wall has to be conducted to reduce the seismic damage to the walls.

In this research, a systematic experimental program for investigating the structural behavior and damage mechanism of LGS partition walls will be conducted to establish the seismic design procedure. As the first step, element tests of stud-to-track connections were conducted to evaluate the ultimate strength. The main test parameters are the length of track, the clearance between track and stud, the pitch of bolts which connect the track to the reaction jig, and the number and spacing of studs. Here, a clearance of 10mm is employed at the top side of stud for workability on construction site. Power actuated fasteners are widely used for tracks to concrete slab connections, and a distance around 900mm is recommended for a pitch of the fasteners in standard specification of construction work.

The test results can be summarized as follows:(1) the structural behavior of stud-to-track connection is dominated by the out-of-plane bending of one-side flange plate of track. Therefore, effects of cyclic loadings on ultimate strength are few; (2) the strength is affected by the length of track and inversely proportional to the clearance between track and stud: (3) the total strength of multiple studs is not in proportional to the number of studs because the multiple studs share the effective width for strength evaluation; (4) a strength evaluation model has been established from the test results.

&nbsp; In recent years, applications of buckling restrained braces (BRBs) in reinforced concrete (RC) frames have attracted much attention. It is necessary to reduce the damage in the BRB connections in RC frames to make the BRBs more effective in dissipating earthquake energy. In this paper, it is proposed to use an unconstrained gusset plate and a hinge relocation technique to control the damage to RC beam-column joints. The structural behavior of RC beams with BRB connections and relocated plastic hinges is investigated by both cyclic loading tests and finite element analysis. In the tests on RC beams with BRB connections, the BRB axial force was simulated by a force-controlled actuator to simplify the boundary condition of the test setup. Two different details of BRB gusset connections were examined. In one method, the gusset plate was fastened to the end of the RC beam by post-tensioned steel rods, whereas it was embedded in the RC beam and anchored there by a stud group in the other method. The test results confirmed that the proposed hinge relocation scheme is effective in controlling the locations of plastic hinges in RC beams so as to prevent the BRBs from being dislocated from the entire structural system as a result of the beam end failure at extreme earthquake scenarios. Both gusset connection details performed satisfactorily by providing sufficient strength and large stiffness to minimize the deformation loss in the BRB connections.<br>&nbsp;Detailed finite element analysis was carried out to reproduce and extend the understanding of the test results. In the analysis, the posttensioned steel rods, the embedded studs and the bond-slip behavior between the embedded gusset plate and the concrete were explicitly modelled. The analysis results agree well with the test results. A parametric study was performed to determine the flexural strength demand for the beam sections that are subjected to the BRB-induced tensile force but are not expected to yield. The results show that the strength ratio, &beta;h, should be no less than 1.14 for the BRB connection to remain essentially elastic.

There are many buildings that lack seismic performance, and these buildings have to be retrofitted as soon as possible before the next great earthquake comes. In case of old steel structures, using a brace is effective to reduce the maximum story drifts induced by earthquakes and to protect non-structural members. In this paper, experiments on improvement of the ultimate strength of bolted angle connections using the additional fillet welding were carried out. The test results show that the additional fillet welding brings an increase in the ultimate strength. The effects of the additional welding depends on their position. From these test results, the effective length considering the effect of the welding position is proposed to evaluate the increase in the ultimate strength. Finally, a simple seismic retrofit design procedure using the additional fillet welding to the bolted angle connections is proposed.

It is very important to establish a visible damage index for quick damage estimation of steel structures. In the reconnaissance of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, many residual out-of-plane deformations of single angle brace and leg openings of its cross section were observed. Cyclic loading tests focusing on the residual out-of-plane deformation and the leg opening of single angle brace were conducted to investigate the relationship between structural performances and damage indices. The major findings obtained from the test are summarized as follows: (1) the maximum story drift angle and the maximum elongation of the brace can be estimated by using the residual out-of-plane deformation; (2) cumulative damage due to cyclic loading can be estimated by the length of the leg opening of its cross section.

The purpose of this study confirms that the hysteretic behavior of structural member subjected to multi-axial cyclic loads can be predicted based on the uni-axial stress hysteretic model. In addition, it is provided on how to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of short span beam subjected to combined bending and shear force. For this purpose, the shear yield type beams are carried out under the simultaneous shear and bending moment loading. The numerical analysis of steel structural member under multi-axial loads was carried out and the material properties were determined from the simple hysteresis model under uni-axial stress. Comparing between the numerical analysis and test showed that numerical analysis using hysteresis model under uni-axial stress was applicable to predict global and local hysteretic behavior on the steel member. On the basis of numerical analysis results, the damage correlation between member and material could be evaluated.

The aim of this study is provided method on how to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of steel column subjected to combined variable axial force and cyclic flexure. For this purpose, the column experiments were performed under various complex loading paths. The numerical analysis of column under combination action of variable axial load and bending moment was carried out using constitutive material model proposed by Yamada et al. (2002). It was shown that predictions for global and local hysteretic behaviors were in excellent agreement with experimental results. On the basis of numerical analysis results, damage relationships between member and material could be evaluated, which is related to these under constant axial load and reversed bending moment.

The purpose of this study confirms that the proposed hysteresis model under multi-axial stress is applicable to the structural member level. The hysteresis behavior of panel-zone web subjected to varying axial stress and shear stress is also evaluated based on one of material level under multi-axial stress in this study. For this purpose, loading tests for panel zone were performed under various loading paths, such as simultaneous loading and sequential loading of axial force and shear force. The numerical analysis of panel zone under multi-axial loads was carried out and the material properties were determined from the proposed hysteresis model under multi-axial stress. Comparing between the numerical analysis and test showed that the proposed hysteresis model under multi-axial stress was applicable to member level. Based on the results of numerical analysis, an experimental investigation on the hysteresis behavior of panel-zone web was performed and compared with that of material test.

The authors have proposed new concept of split-tee connections at bottom flanges of beam ends, which work as beam-end elasto-plastic dampers. They are composed of small buckling-restrained axial members, and their cumulative deformation capacities or energy dissipating capacities are one of the most important indexes for such members' performance, because they are used under very high strained cyclic loadings. In this paper, cyclic loading tests are carried out for beam-end dampers, and their performances against low-cycle fatigue are examined. Their cumulative deformation capacity under random inputs are also evaluated with the proposed method and compared with those of buckling restrained braces.

Seismic performance of steel structure is based on the energy absorption capacity of structural members. Energy absorption capacity of steel member is determined by cumulative plastic strain. Therefore, it is important to evaluate how the steel member and material are related respectively on the plastic deformation capacity. In this study, the numerical analysis on beams and beam-columns was carried out. The analytical parameters were the lengths of members, material properties, axial force ratios, and cyclic loading types. The stress-strain relationship on the node of member was evaluated by plastic deformation capacity, accompanied with hysteretic behavior of member. The results showed that the reasonable relation between material and member on plastic deformation capacity under hysteretic behavior could be explained by the energy absorption capacity.

A new type of seismic beam-end splice is proposed which uses a hysteretic damper as the splice element at the bottom flange of the beam. The design intent of this beam-end splice is to concentrate plastic deformation of the beam to a replaceable damper-and-splice element while limiting damage to the concrete slab. Non-degrading hysteretic characteristics of the damper-and-splice element is achieved by adequate buckling restraints. Based on axial loading tests of the damper-and-splice element and simple mechanics, design equation for the buckling restraints were established. Beam-column subassemblages implementing the proposed beam-end splice exhibited excellent cyclic loading behavior. Concerns regarding web crippling of the beam directly below the top flange splice are addressed.

This paper presents an experimental study on new moment frame connections designed to restrict damage to specific connection elements placed at the bottom flange of the beam. Composite effects and damage to the concrete slab were addressed in these tests. Composite action led to a roughly 98% increase in initial elastic stiffness and 20% increase in yield strength. Meanwhile, the plastic strain at the specific connection elements was increased by only 20%, indicating that the plastic rotation capacity of the connections was hardly affected by the presence of the concrete slab. And the feature of the design forcing the connection to rotate about the top flange was beneficial in reducing damage to the concrete slab.

Many steel structures suffered damage at beam-to-column connections under the Northridge and Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquakes more than 8 years ago. After these earthquakes, a remarkable number of studies have been made on beam-to-column connections in U.S. and Japan. Nevertheless, in those studies, little attention has been paid to the point of repairing. The purpose of this study is to propose new ductile steel structure frame system, which realizes not only structural performances but also easy repairing after heavy earthquake. This system is based on bolted connections with split-tee. Main feature of this system is to limit plastic deformation to the splittee at bottom flange. To the contrary, the split-tee at top flange can be kept in elastic, because the center of rotation stays at the top flange of beam end.Consequently, when the structure using this system suffers compulsory deformation under the earthquake, the deformation concentrates on the split-tee at bottom flange. Finally, two series of static tests were conducted. First series are axial loading tests of the weak-web-split-tee elements, and second series are bending tests of beam-to-column connections having weak-web-split-tee. From the result of these tests, we verified that this system had efficient deformation capacity. In addition, the damaged part of this system would.be easy to repair or change to new one.

It is very important for structural engineers to consider restoring buildings soon after an earthquake. In the previous paper, the authors proposed new ductile steel frames, which realized not only structural performance but also easy repair after an earthquake. In this paper, two tests were conducted to apply the new system to buildings more effectively. Firstly, a cyclic loading test of a frame with the weak-web-split-tee was carried out. The beam of the frame had two disadvantageous conditions to a plastic rotation capacity. They are a very thin web-plate of the beam, and a concrete slab on the beam. As the result of the first test, the frame showed a sufficient rotation capacity by limiting plastic rotation to the weak-web-split-tees at the bottom flange of beam-ends. Secondly, a cyclic loading test of a frame, which had the buckling-restrained braces with bolted connections, were carried out At the bolted connections, the concrete slab with reinforcement bars was used to transfer a lateral force of the dampers. As the result of the second test, the concrete slab showed the sufficient capacity to work dampers. From the results of the two tests, it showed that the new system could be applied to buildings more effectively.

Recently, steel with low yield point, such as LYP100 and LYP225, is used for damper. In this study, relationship between true stress and true strain of steel for damper is simply modeled considering the Bauschinger effect. This hysteresis model is composed of skeleton curve, Bauschinger part and unloading part. Skeleton curve corresponds to the stress-strain relationship of monotonic loading test. Bauschinger part is modeled as a function of the cumulative strain in the skeleton curve on the basis of experimental result of cyclic loading test. Though the hysteresis model is simple, it corresponds well to the experimental result. It is enoueh effective in order to analyze the behavior of dampers in the plastic range.

The purpose of this research project is to verify the performance of the components of the experimental apparatus (full-scale testing facility “E-Isolation”), which employs a new measurement method with laminated rubber bearings and four horizontal links, in parallel with the construction of the facility, and to conduct verification experiments for maximum vertical and horizontal loading performance after the apparatus is put into operation. Through these experiments, the characteristics of the natural rubber laminate bearing that constitutes the facility in the extremely small-deformation region, the vertical characteristics when pre-stress is introduced, and the horizontal characteristics of the reaction beam supports were determined. Furthermore, the laminated rubber bearing was inserted as the test specimen, and dynamic experiments were conducted on the maximum vertical load and horizontal performance of the testing machine to confirm the validity of the measurement system.

In buildings where the vibration-controlled frame or rigid-floor-assumption does not hold, not only bending moments but also axial forces act on the beams simultaneously. This study experimentally and analytically investigated the effects of beam axial forces on the load-carrying capacity and plastic deformation capacity of steel beam-to-column connections with typical connection details employed in Japan. The results show that if the magnitude of the axial force acting on the beam-to-column connection is less than the plastic axial strength of the welded web connection, the axial force does not significantly increase the strain concentration at the point of failure, nor does it significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity, thus providing a framework for a design method that takes the effect of axial force into account.

The purpose of this research project is to investigate the actual status of seismic repair methods based on disaster restoration information and to establish seismic repair methods according to the damage level of steel members and target restoration performance through experimental evaluation of these methods. As a result of the structural experiments, a seismic repair method that selects details of the repairing plate according to the damage level of steel columns and a seismic repair method that retightens turnbuckle braces and anchor bolts of exposed column bases were developed. And, the results showed that the seismic repair method by retightening was effective even under realistic conditions, because the torque coefficient, which was used as an index of workability, was stable when rust-preventive paint was applied.

In this study, the seismic performance of steel buildings under multiple strong earthquakes such as the Kumamoto earthquake was examined by systematic experiments and analysis. From analytical results of inelastic response analysis on middle and low-rise steel buildings, it was found that it did not collapse even after receiving five earthquakes of design level strength. Furthermore, it was found that it does not collapse even if it receives three earthquakes that are twice as strong as the design level. However, if a large earthquake above the design level is experienced, the function of the building will be lost due to damage to the inner wall, so avoiding damage to non-structural elements is a necessary measure for maintaining the function of the buildings.

Firstly, cyclic loading tests focusing on the residual out-of-plane deformation and the leg opening of single angle brace were conducted. The major findings obtained from the test are summarized as follows: (1) the maximum story drift angle and the maximum elongation of the brace can be estimated by using the residual out-of-plane deformation; (2) cumulative damage due to cyclic loading can be estimated by the length of the leg opening of its cross section.
And, cyclic loading tests focusing on the residual out-of-plane deformation in the local buckling region of steel column were conducted. The major findings obtained from the test are summarized as follows: (1) the out-of-plane deformation in local buckling region was strongly related with the residual strength deteriorated due to the local buckling; (2) the rotation angle of column after deterioration is able to be converted to the out-of-plane deformation by a 3-hinge deformation model of the local buckling.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the three-dimensional collapse behavior of steel building structure under severe earthquake and make the safe margin of earthquake resistant design clear. For the evaluation, it is necessary to do the response analysis which reflected realistic behavior of constructional members. In order to evaluate the hysteretic behaviors of columns and beams, some series of three-dimensional cyclic loading test on RHS columns and a series of cyclic loading test on composite beams were conducted. Also, research team worked on development of an analytical program for three-dimensional collapse behavior of steel frames.

The proposal consists of BRBs in adjacent stories that share the same gusset plate, which is fastened to the concrete beam-to-column joint by prestressing bolts and is kept by a pair of RC corbels. The behavior of the BRB connection and the whole building was observed through an experimental test and followed by analysis. First, the cyclic performance of the connection of the proposed continuously braced frame system is examined through subassembly test. As a result, the effectiveness of this connection method was confirmed. Next, the shear strength of RC corbels and force transmission in stirrups and concrete are investigated by component test and finite-element analysis. In addition, a strut-and-tie model is proposed to estimate the shear strength of deep corbels. Finally, seismic response analysis of reinforced concrete building with BRBs was carried out and the dynamic performance wasconfirmed.

Passive-control is used for most major Japanese high-rise buildings after the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Nevertheless, the majority of these studies have tested isolated dampers or simple subassemblies which neglect the influence of the framing components and the damper connections on the system performance. In order to evaluate the elasto-plastic behavior of beam-column subassemblies with brace-type and wall-type damper connections, hybrid-control experiments and numerical studies are carried out.
