Because gear vibration is generated at mesh point and it transmits to the gear box throughout shafts, bearings and pedestals, it is inadequate to discuss about total vibration behavior of the gear system only with the vibration behavior on a gear. In this study, we discuss about spring and damping effect on gear-shaft connection parts, bearings and pedestals for this purpose with both experiments and analysis results with transfer matrix method. As a result, it becomes clear that dynamic force response transmitting throughout bearings are sensitive to the deviation in assemble process

In this research, we discuss about the peculiar vibration behavior of a helical gear pair that appears at non-integer order of the meshing frequency. It is supposed that the vibration is generated because of the irregularity of tooth surface form having different cycles of transmission error from tooth mesh cycle. But, it is difficult to detect the slight irregularity with direct measurement of tooth shapes. Characteristics of tooth surface irregularity are discussed with spectra of gear vibration supposing the tooth form deviation that has an integer order component of gear rotation excepting the tooth number order and its harmonics. And analytical model of the mechanism that generates non-integer order vibration are verified experimentally. Possibility of the spectrum analysis of measured tooth surface form irregularity is also discussed.

This paper proposes a simulator which can depict the rotational vibration of a spur gear having any types of tooth surface deviation including both tooth profile deviations and tooth helix deviations. The developed simulator is based on a single degree of freedom motion system constructed with equivalent mass, damping and mesh stiffness of a pair of gears. The mesh stiffness is calculated considering the effect of the tooth helix deviation which brings non uniform load distribution along the contact line of a tooth pair. The dynamic load tests have been performed to verify the simulator changing both helix slope deviation of driven gear and torque. The analytical results under each operating conditions are in good agreement with experimental results. Also, the damping ratio of the test gear system is evaluated as 0.03 with measured vibration responses, which is smaller than conventional expectation value of 0.07.

Based on the 12-degree of freedom dynamic model of a helical gear system, which was constructed by putting dynamic contributions of shafts and bearings at the centers of gear bodies, a method to take gear tooth surface deviations into account as the exciting force is presented in this paper. The effect of the tooth surface form has been counted for in terms of error excitation in the plane of action where the force interacts between two mating gears through two parallel spring representing tooth-to-tooth elasticity. The method has been verified experimentally by giving shaft misalignment, or the helix slope deviation. A chart named "Amplitude Factor Contour Diagram" is also proposed which is able to suggest tolerable deviations coming from manufacturing, assembling or operating conditions.

Helical gears with bias modification are used to suppress the vibration of gear transmissions. However the dynamics of a gear pair with bias modification is not clear. In this paper, bias modification are defined on plane of action, and the performance of gears with bias-out modification and the performance of gears with bias-in modification are presented based on the study of dynamic behavior of a helical gear system with gear surface modification. And the performance of gears with bias modification when shaft is with misalignment are also discussed.

When we operate a transmission under light load conditions, the contact pattern of the gear pair does not cover the entire tooth surface and the vibratory response varies with transmitting load. To obtain a detailed description of the rotational vibratory response of a helical gear pair having tooth surface deviation during light load transmission, we have already developed a numerical calculation method for gear vibration which can take any type of deviation into account. In this paper, we show the 'performance diagram' for several types of tooth profile deviation and several load conditions. The perfomance diagram indicates the acceleration level using contour lines on the contact ratio plane formed by the transverse contact ratio (abscissa) and the overlap ratio (ordinate). With these diagrams, the vibratory characteristics of each type of tooth profile under light load conditions become clear. The optimal and worst gear parameters are discussed.

When shafts of helical gear system are stiffer enough than tooth mesh, the dynamic behavior can be estimated with a single-degree-of-freedom model. Recently, however, gear vibration has been reduced due to the many efforts exerted for noise reduction. As the result, the effects of shafts, bearing and gear box on the vibration have become of great importance for further noise reduction. In this paper, a new formulation to interpret the dynamic action of a helical gear from measured signal of acceleration pick-ups mounted on the gear blank is presented. In particular, transverse and tilting vibrations are discussed in detail, and they are verified with the modes of vibration of shafts measured with a laser Doppler velocimeter.

A detailed description of elastic behavior due to contact is necessary for the analysis of vibrational behavior of a pair of helical gears having a tooth flank deviation which yields partial face contact under light load conditions. This paper shows how we can obtain the relationship between load distribution and the compressive deformation of meshing surfaces assigning the tooth contact pattern with geometry of two surfaces. Tooth surface contact is approximated by the contact between a finite-length cylinder surface whose radius varies along its center axis and a plane with the same width. Our results have been verified by experiment.
