This paper compares the embodied aesthetic experience of three types of images: photographed flowers, drawn flowers, and mandalas, summarizing data from three former comparative papers. The findings denote the strong embodied emotional connection of participants (changes in mood expressed in neural and physiological responses) to images of real flowers, as compared to the more cognitive reactions to drawings of flowers and cognitive stimulation of flower-like mandalas. These findings are discussed in terms of methodological relevance for art therapy and nature therapy. While it is known that flowers arouse positive emotions, this more nuanced comparison has interesting implications for visual art therapy, and for the therapeutic effects of nature photos, as opposed to drawn interpretations of nature.

PURPOSE: We investigated the association between prenatal checkup status and low birth weight (LBW). We also sought to identify the background factors of pregnant women that influence their attendance at prenatal checkups and consider measures that might prove useful in reducing the LBW rate. METHODS: Using data from a large nationwide birth cohort study, the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), the sample comprised 91,916 unique mother-infant pairs with singleton live births. The outcome variable was cases of LBW, and the exposure variable was prenatal checkup status (number of visits missed). Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: AORs (95% CIs) for cases of LBW were 1.57 (1.46-1.69) for 1 missed checkup, 2.40 (1.97-2.94) for 2 missed checkups, and 2.38 (1.46-3.88) for ≥3 missed checkups. A linear trend was also observed (P < .0001). Further analysis revealed that the main risk factors for missed checkups were divorced or widowed marital status, followed by negative attitude toward pregnancy, and single marital status, whereas protective factors were being employed and better mental health in mid-late pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest the importance of implementing various measures to promote regular attendance at prenatal checkups.

People have an ancient and strong bond to flowers, which are known to have a positive effect on the mood. During the COVID-19 pandemic, sales of ornamental plants increased, and many turned to gardening, possibly as a way to cope with ubiquitous increases in negative mood following lockdowns and social isolation. The nature of the special bond between humans and flowers requires additional elucidation. To this means, we conducted a comprehensive online mixed methods study, surveying 253 individuals (ages 18–83) from diverse ethnic backgrounds and continents, regarding their thoughts and feelings towards photos of flowers, nature scenes and flower drawings. We found that looking at pictures and drawings of flowers, as well as nature scenes induced positive emotions, and participants reported a variety of positive responses to the images. More specifically, we found associations of flowers with femininity, and connotations to particular flowers that were affected by geographical location. While nature scene photos induced positive reactions, flower photos were preferred, denying a mere substitution of nature by flowers and vice versa. Drawings of flowers elicited less positive emotions than photos, as people related more to the art than to the flower itself. Our study reveals the importance of ornamental flowers and nature in our life and well-being, and as such their cultivation and promotion are essential.

Emergency situations promote risk-taking behaviors associated with anxiety reactivity. A previous study using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has demonstrated that prespecified state anxiety predicts moderate risk-taking (middle-risk/high-return) after salient penalty events under temporal pressure and information ambiguity. Such moderate risk-taking can be used as a behavioral background in the case of fraud damage. We conducted two psychophysiological experiments using the IGT and used a psychophysiological modeling approach to examine how moderate risk-taking under temporal pressure and information ambiguity is associated with automatic physiological responses, such as a skin conductance response (SCR). The first experiment created template SCR functions under concurrent temporal pressure and information ambiguity. The second experiment produced a convolution model using the SCR functions and fitted the model to the SCR time series recorded under temporal pressure and no temporal pressure, respectively. We also collected the participants' anxiety profiles before the IGT experiment. The first finding indicated that participants with higher state anxiety scores yielded better model fitting (that is, event-related physiological responses) under temporal pressure. The second finding demonstrated that participants with better model fitting made consecutive Deck A selections under temporal pressure more frequently. In summary, a psychophysiological modeling approach is effective for capturing overlapping SCRs and moderate risk-taking under concurrent temporal pressure and information ambiguity is associated with automatic physiological and emotional reactivity.

In real-life circumstances, people occasionally require making forced decisions when encountering unpredictable events and situations that yield socially and privately unfavorable consequences. In order to prevent future negative consequences, it is beneficial to successfully predict future decision-making behaviors based on various types of information, including behavioral traits and/or psychological states. For this prospective purpose, the present study used the Iowa Gambling Task, which simulates multiple aspects of real-life decision-making processes, such as choice preference, selection and evaluation of output feedback, and investigated how anxiety profiles predict decision-making performances under conditions with different temporal pressures on task execution. To conduct a temporally causal analysis, we assessed the trait and state anxiety profiles of 33 young participants prior to the task and analyzed their subsequent decision-making performances. We separated two disadvantageous card decks with high rewards and losses into high- and middle-risk decks, and calculated local performance indexes for decision-making immediately after salient penalty events for the high-risk deck in addition to traditional global performance indexes concerning overall trial outcomes such as final winnings and net scores. For global decision-making, higher trait anxiety predicted more risky choices solely in the self-paced condition without temporal pressure. For local decision-making, state anxiety predicted risk-taking performances differently in the self- and forced-paced conditions. In the self-paced condition, higher state anxiety predicted higher risk-avoidance. In the forced-paced condition, higher state anxiety predicted more frequent choices of the middle-risk deck. These findings suggest not only that pre-specified anxiety profiles can effectively predict future decision-making behaviors under different temporal pressures, but also newly indicate that behavioral mechanisms for moderate risk-taking under an emergent condition should be focused on to effectively prevent future unfavorable consequences when actually encountering negative events.

Few studies have investigated the relationship between cortisol diurnal rhythm and cognitive function in healthy young adults, especially for emotional memory. To address this deficiency, this study examined the effect of diurnal cortisol slope (DCS) and heart rate variability (HRV) on emotional memory. Participants included healthy volunteers (44 men and 23 women; mean age 20.60 yrs). Participants were shown emotionally arousing slides and were asked to return to the laboratory one week later where they were given a "surprise" memory test to examine their emotional memory retention. Participants were asked to collect saliva samples at four time points (08:00, 11:00, 15:00, and 20:00) on the experimental days; these samples were used to calculate the DCS. Moreover, HRV was measured during the experiment. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that declarative memory ability, sleep duration, and the DCS were the final significant determinants for emotional memory enhancement (B = -20.41, 0.05, -48.20, ps < 0.05), with participants having flatter cortisol slopes showing reduced or absent emotional memory enhancement. These findings are discussed in reference to the possible effects of diurnal rhythm mechanisms of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and the autonomic nervous system on emotional memory.

A declining birth rate and aging population largely determine the future of Japanese society. Practical skills must be developed to solve problems resulting from ultra-aging by means of scientific knowledge including neuroscience. In this article, we shall review recent neuroscientific studies to explain why many aged people tend to fall prey to deceptions such as bank transfer fraud. Since neural mechanisms underlying deliberative decision making function poorly in aged brain, old people tend to decide automatically. This is why some old people are poor decision-makers. At the end, we shall propose some political treatments to protect old people from deceptions in view of their styles of decision making.

We proposed a new educational model named as "Positive Engineering Education" (hereafter PE2) which combines traditional academic and professional engineering education with "well-being" education based on the findings of well-being science. We also presented the components of the positive engineering education program, including specific learning and educational objectives and contents of foundation courses and the concept and implementation plan of "Well-being across the Curriculum."
In addition, as educational materials to achieve the overall educational goal of PE2, we planned and produced video materials depicting a student's process of deepening his recognition of his own WB and how it relates to "good work" as an engineer.

The psychology group conducted three experiments focusing on “anxiety,” “time pressure,” and “information ambiguity”. In Studies 1 and 2, we first examined the decision-making process of young adults under conditions of time pressure and high information ambiguity, and then used a psychophysiological modeling approach to examine relationships among changes in decision-making performance, anxiety states, and event-related autonomic physiological responses. Study 3 compared decision-making behaviors of older adults and younger adults.
The economic group conducted two experiments focusing on “helping behavior” in special fraud situations. Study 4 examined how the differences in the method of obtaining the pie affect the way it is allocated. Study 5 analyzed how a random shock which cause a portion of the earned pie to be lost affects allocation decisions of the pie.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between changes in daily stress levels and those in the circadian rhythm (biological rhythm) of salivary cortisol. Participants were 26 employed men who both completed a questionnaire and had their salivary cortisol circadian rhythm measured 3 times at 4-week intervals. Examining the correlation coefficients between the daily stress level and cortisol rhythm revealed that participants for whom the “difference in sleep time between the day before a weekend and a weekday” increased from the initial measurement till that at 4 weeks had a worse cortisol rhythm at 4 weeks. Additionally, participants for whom stress levels increased or energy decreased at 4 weeks had a worse cortisol rhythm at 8 weeks. These results suggest that changes in daily stress at 4 weeks may also impact cortisol rhythm at 8 weeks.

This empirical study is to examine social support for the SDF families during major disaster relief and other contingency operations from interdisciplinary perspectives. Based on quantitative and qualitative data, the SDF families with extended family absence due to international peace operations, and/or major disaster relief operations, including the one after the Great East Japan Earthquake, tend to seek family support stronger than those who have not experienced above-mentioned family absence. The disaster relief/peace operations veteran families also tend to support efforts to institutionalize a “family safety”monitoring system, which is to see if a SDF personnel’s family members are safe or not. However, effective “family safety” monitoring system has not yet been made, and most SDF personnel depend on “self-help,” receiving informal support from family members or close friends. Social construction of "community capacity”in Japan seems to have a long way to go.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between salivary cortisol diurnal rhythm and emotional memory consolidation in healthy subjects. Salivary cortisol levels were measured at four time points(8:00, 11:00, 15:00, 20:00) at the experimental day. The participants viewed emotionally arousing story and one week later they were asked to return to the laboratory and were given a surprise memory test. The story consisted of three phases and emotionally arousing narration occurred during phase 2. The slope of diurnal cortisol variation was calculated using a regression of log-transformed cortisol concentrations on sample collection time. Only the flat slope group did not exhibit a memory score difference among the three phases.
