    We have developed an efficient and compact 3.4 mu m difference-frequency-generation spectrometer using a 1.55 mu m distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode, a 1.06 mu m DFB laser diode, and a ridge-waveguide periodically poled lithium niobate. It is continuously tunable in the 30 cm(-1) span and is applied to (CH3D)-C-12/(CH4)-C-12 isotope ratio measurements. The suitable pair of (CH3D)-C-12 nu(4) P-p(7,6) and (CH4)-C-12 nu(2)+nu(4) R(6) F-1((1)) lines enabled us to determine their isotope ratio with a precision repeatability of 0.8 parts per thousand using a sample and a working standard of pure methane with an effective signal averaging time of 100 ms.

    We measure the (CH4)-C-13/(CH4)-C-12 ratio of methane diluted with air or nitrogen to investigate the applicability of our laser spectrometer to real environmental samples. We developed a 1.66 mu m diode laser absorption spectrometer and demonstrated high precision on pure methane, but for practical observations it is appropriate to measure the samples directly without purification. We examine effects of different pressure, concentration and the kind of gases for diluting between samples and a working-standard on the measurement. The effects are found to be small and the high repetitive precision (reproducibility) of similar to 0.1 parts per thousand (1 sigma) is obtained at 10 and 1% methane concentrations without any correction or automatic control of the gas conditions. At 0.1% concentration, however, the precision stays at similar to 1 parts per thousand. It is expected that the high precision of similar to 0.1 parts per thousand at the 0.1% concentration cannot be achieved, due to saturation of the signal intensity at high pressure of the sample in a multi-pass cell, caused by pressure broadening of methane absorption lines. The relationship between the isotopic ratio measured by the laser and that by the isotopic ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) is linear with small fluctuations, but the slope is slightly different from unity.     High-precision measurement of the isotope abundance ratio (NNO)-N-14-N-15-O-16/(NNO)-N-15-N-14-O-16/(NNO)-N-14-N-14-O-18/(NNO)-N-14-N-14-O-16 (similar to0.37/0.37/0.2/100) in nitrous oxide by a laser-spectroscopic method is demonstrated. The abundance ratio is determined from the absorbance ratio of selected absorption lines near 2 mum of the respective isotopic molecular species. Four wavelength-modulated diode lasers whose center wavelengths are stabilized on the selected lines are made to travel different distances in a multipass cell to compensate the large abundance differences. In the test experiment using pure nitrous oxide samples the abundance ratio can be measured with relative uncertainties of +/-(2-6) x 10(-4) (+/-0.2-0.6parts per thousand). The laser-spectroscopic method is expected to complement mass spectrometry in isotope analyses to trace the geochemical cycles of environmental substances. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.     Recent experimental results of closed cycle MHD electrical power generation with the "Fuji-1" blowdown facility are presented. In the experiment with Disk-F4 Mi-ID generator, which was conducted with a modified seed injection system in 1997, an enthalpy extraction ratio of 18.4% was successfully demonstrated with a large output power of 506 kW. This enthalpy extraction ratio is the highest among those achieved with the Fuji-1 facility. The experimental results also revealed the electrical characteristics of the generator installed in the blow-down facility. The decline in the output power and its recovery were observed at the early stage of the power generation run. This fact could be attributed to the attachment of seed material to the generator walls and to its detachment, related to the relatively slow rise in temperature on the wall surface. It was verified for the first time in the Fuji-1 experiment that the reduction of impurity contamination resulted in improvement in the generator performance. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Seed fraction in the working gas of the Fuji-1 has been determined from the measurements of total absorption of the potassium 5p-4s lines (404.4, 404.7nm)recorded with a multichannel spectrometer. The optical collision radius of the potassium lines in argon, which is necessary for calculation of the potassium number density from the total absorption, has been determined experimentally. It was found that the electrical power output had a maximum value at seed fraction of 1.8×10-4 and decreased rapidly at seed fraction lower than 1.0×10-4.
