This study investigated how three faculty members and an external lecturer selected training content and implemented teaching methods for faculty development (FD) to ensure learning opportunities for faculty members at science universities. Qualitative analysis revealed the following three points: (1) the lack of a clear image of the target participants causes discrepancies between participant needs and the FD seminar planners; (2) the faculty developer (FDer) is apt to “chase after two hares,” when seeking student-centered teaching style and instructors’ language skills improvement; and (3) FD seminars should be focused on a specific topic to be more attractive to the target participants.

We present the theory and design of an adaptive lapped biorthogonal transform for image coding. The proposed transform consists of basis functions overlapping across adjacent blocks and non-overlapping basis functions, where the basis functions' centers of symmetry are aligned. Because of the alignment, we can use the symmetric extension method at image boundaries when we transform an input image. Next, we show that the optimal non-overlapping basis functions in the minimal mean square error sense can be found by solving an eigenvalue problem without numerical search when the overlapping ba...

We propose a postprocessing technique to reduce the blocking effect for orientation adaptive coding of images. This coding method uses a set of transforms adapted for directionality of each block, which is adaptively transformed by the most suitable transform. In this method, moreover, the directional information of each block must be transmitted or stored for decoding. In this paper, to reduce the blocking effect, we exploit this directional information of each block, that is, we apply an adaptive lowpass filter according to the directional information. First, we define filters adapted for...

A lapped orthogonal transform adapted for local directionality of an image is proposed and its application in adaptive image coding is presented. First, we consider the lapped orthogonal transform with short and long functions such that the long functions are twice the size of the short functions, and present the optimal solution in the energy compaction sense when the feasible long functions are given previously. Moreover, using the optimal short functions, we propose the concept of an orientation adaptive lapped orthogonal transform(OALOT)and give its design method. Experimental results s...

In this research, as the basic part of the theory for operator manifolds, we defined the differentials for operators and an operation that corresponds to the differential of differentials contained in an operator. By using them, we provided an operator equation expressing the local isotropic independence. We also provided a solution for a simple case and an equation derived from the fact that the operator is space-invariant.
Furthermore, we have developed methods to obtain a curved coordinate system using local correlation given by the Mahalanobis metric defined by using the equation for the local isotropic independence, to obtain the deformation of an image by combining the canonical correlation and local features of images, to adapt to different domains in pattern recognition by using attributes of patterns, to detect outliers of EEG by using spectral distance as a Riemannian distance, and to smooth image using local statistical features of images.

In collaborating with UNESCO Asia and the Pacific, this research aims at investigating the use of ICT to promote 21st Century Skills (transversal skills) in Asia. Based on the country study in the Asia and the Pacific, it identified advantages and issues in introducing ICT in education settings. Specifically, the analysis was conducted on education policy documents related to transversal skills, teacher training programs and local policies, classroom observations and teacher surveys. Regional conferences were organized to discuss the issues among the experts concerned and to disseminate the study results in Seoul (2016) and Ulanbaatar (2018). Participatory education database was also created at UNESCO Bangkok to promote on-line discussion and share the studies related. As few regional studies exist in the Asian region, and thus, this research is expected to contribute to the monitoring of SDG4 promoting quality education in the region.

For the manifold signal processing theory concerning the metric structure, we constructed a method to solving locally isotropically independence equations by using Gauss normalized kernel functions, and defined an operator equation to express the locally isotropically independent change. We developed a semi-supervised learning method for metrics when the number of training data is not enough. We proposed a method to assign a pattern to a subspace, and a metric suitable to discrimination for the Grassmann manifold. We also developed an anomaly detection method with images by combining the direct estimation for the ration between probability density functions and the convolutional network, and a distance for hand-written character recognition that provides the best recognition rate among those based on k-nearest neighbor method. Furthermore, we improved the performance of recognition of motional intention that enables paretics caused by apoplexy, etc. to reconstruct motor function.

In order to improve the performance of signal processing and pattern recognition, it is necessary to obtain a proper metric for signals and patterns and develop processing and recognition methods based on the metric.
According to the concept, we improve the theory of Mahalanobis metric, develop a calculation method of Mahalanobis metric using kernel functions, and provide criteria and calculation methods that can obtain a equivalent result with the maximum posteriori method without estimating a posteriori probability. We also propose a method to directly estimate the L2 distance between two probability density functions and show its properties with respect to convergence and bias. We develop an algorithm to calculate the sample average on Stiefel manifold, and the adaptive kernel principle component analysis that can extract features with a small number of basis functions. The advantages of developed methods are shown by experimental results.

A novel class of time-varying subband transforms and its application in image coding are introduced. We construct the framework in which an analysis subband transform is chosen from a given set of analysis transforms and perfect reconstruction is achieved. To this end, we suggest the reconstruction method from the transformed coefficients by applying the theory of convex projections (POCS). We introduce convex sets for perfect reconstruction from the transformed vector. We further propose other convex sets which assure smoothness of plane regions for image coding applications. We show several image coding examples. The proposed coding method is an extension of conventional one with multiple block-based transforms. At each time instance (block), the transform to be applied is chosen from a given set of orthogonal subband transforms according to a certain criterion. Experimental results show that the use of multiple subband transforms leads to the improvement of coding performance compared to the use of single transform even though there exists side information.

Since the accuracy of pattern recognition is not enough, this research is done for making pattern recognition more accurate by applying the kernel method, which can realize complicated discrimination boundary with a non-linear mapping, to the relative principal component analysis, which is proposed by our research group and can extract principal components under the effect of another signal which has to be suppressed.
The results of this research are as follows.
    1) The theorem of the kernel principal component analysis (KRPCA) was established and its closed form that can provide the solution of KRPCA with a kernel function and samples were obtained.
    2) A simple closed form of KRPCA for a non-singular kernel Gram matrix was provided. Then, KRPCA can be realized by computer more simply.
    3) By computer simulation with standard recognition problems, the advantages of KRPCA were shown.
    4) The kernel sample space method and the one with suppression feature that are the KRPCAs in a special case were proposed. Its closed forms were provided. Although they are restricted version of KRPCA, they achieved similar performance to KRPCA. Since their solution are very simple, the theory of additive learning for them was provided.
    5) The existing kernel method uses a kind of nonlinear function. By extending it, we proposed the theory of asymmetric kernel method that uses two kinds of nonlinear functions. It will be a basis for future progress of kernel method. A classifier by using it was constructed and its advantages were shown.
    6) For other researches, we provided a new theory of subband filter bank, showed its advantage in image coding, and researches a computer architecture for recognition and signal processing.

代表的な類内特徴抽出法であるCLAFIC(CLAss-Featuring Information Compression)法では、自分のカテゴリーに平均的に多く含まれる特徴を抽出する。

In this sutdy, we first formalized the problem of training a neural network as one of an inverse problem in function approximation. Next, we provided necessary and sufficient conditions for optimal generalization capability in terms of the number of hidden units, the basis functions, and the weights connected to each hidden unit. Furthermore, we gave a methodology to construct neural networks with optimal generalization capability.
From this methodology, we can see that are an infinite numbers of neural networks with the same generalization capability. From among this infinite number, we specified the ones which are most robust with respect to some kinds of faults which may occur in actual usage. Concretely, we gave methods to decide weights in neural networks which optimally suppress the influences of each of the following faults : a proportional errors in the weights, a connection fault, and a stuck-at gamma fault. Moreover, we gave the methods to decide not only weights but also basis functions for the hidden units which optimally suppress the above three faults.
Next we constructed a method for incremental learning in which only the current network and one new datum are used to obtain a new network at each step, while maintaining the property that the neural network is optimally generalizing with respect to all of the data learned so far. We think our results have the potential for being applied to the problem of active learning.
Moreover, we gave a solution to the problem of over-learning which occurs in training of neural networks using the error-backpropagation algorithm, i.e., we introduced the concept of admissibility defined by relation-ship between two learning criteria. According to the admissibility, we devised methods for choosing training data to prevent over-leaning.

A theory for neural network learning which is very effective for analyzing the generalization ability and the overlearning problem is developed. This theory is based on the image restoration theories proposed by the head investigator of this project. Although the problems of generalization and image restoration seem to have nothing in common, we have shown that both problems can be dealt with under the same methodology if we formalize them as a kind of inverse problem. This novel approach provides an analytical and quantitative method for the problems of generalization and over-learning which have been so far treated qualitatively. Followings are the major results obtained in this project.
・A new framework of generalization which can extract general structures among training samples is developed based on the image restoration theories.
・We analyze the generalization ability of the back-propagation using the framework.
・We provide a way of choosing, training samples which does not cause the over-learning problem and gives an optimal generalizing ability.
・Above theoretical results are examined by some computer simulations.

The Computerized Topography is said to be one of the most revolutional medical technologies for the last decade. However, the ability of the algorithms proposed so far is restricted only to the reconstruction of two dimensional cross section images and the reconstruction of 3-dimensional images has been carried out by applying those algorithms independently to each section image of the 3-D objects. It has been thought to be impossible to reconstruct moving objects from their projections by using those algorithms, because the independent application of those algorithms to each section of a object is computationally too much burden and can not make use of the 3-D correlations among the section images of a moving object for saving computation power or for restoring blurred and noisy projections In our research, we proposed novel reconstruction algorithms to eliminate above problems. (1) We proposed a direct reconstruction algorithm for cone beam projection schema by which we can collect 3-D data faster than traditional methods. This algorithm was also designed to have the capability of restoring blurred data. (2) We developed a noise canceling technique which uses the redundant structure among projections. This technique is effective when the data is noisy due to the fast rotation of the X-ray detector. (3) We proposed a new filter which is called a partial projection filter. This filter utilizes the 3-D correlation of images to save the number of samplings of the data or to improve the quality of reconstructed images.
