    Abstract

    To reveal the effect of ground on the force behavior, propulsion performance, and vortex dynamics of a flapping foil, we numerically study a flapping foil actuated by combined heaving and pitching motions with large amplitudes near a solid ground surface. The instantaneous forces in both streamwise and cross-stream directions undergo a sudden drop during upstroke in close ground effect. The time-averaged thrust is enhanced by the ground but varies non-monotonically with ground distance at high foil oscillating frequencies. Three force regimes are identified in lift production, giving rise to two equilibrium altitudes of zero lift, one stable and another unstable. Moreover, we propose a simple scaling law model by a path-length-based Strouhal number and ground effect for thrust and power performance of a large-amplitude flapping foil. The results of the model are consistent with numerical results and previous experimental studies. The vortex dynamics in the wake structure are largely affected by ground proximity; in particular, the formed vortex pairs and their orientations are sensitive to their initial relative positions. Different sources and mechanisms of satellite vortex formation are then discussed. The ground exerts little effect on the phase angles that optimize the propulsive efficiency. This study is expected to provide new insights into the development and maneuvering of flapping foil-based propulsive systems.

    The present work numerically studies the dynamics of a two-dimensional wall-mounted flexible plate in an oscillatory flow, aiming to assess the effect of structure bending stiffness and wave orbital excursion on the plate deflection, reconfiguration, and drag reduction. Different modes of dynamic responding behaviors are identified such as quasi-linear, linear, non-linear, and irregular modes with varied studying parameters. The plates of the quasi-linear mode show a fully reconfigured state in oscillatory flow with different wave excursions, of which the tip deflection and effective length for the reconfiguration effect are analyzed and the scaling laws are derived based on force and energy balances. With decreasing elasticity, the plates through linear motion show the limitation of reconfiguration and move passively and rigorously following along oscillatory flow with zero phase lag, wherein the tip deflections saturate to the same order as wave excursions and the effective lengths change slightly where the bending stiffness effect is insignificant. A critical Cauchy number, Cacri, which separates the fully reconfigured state and passive movement state, is proposed using the scaling arguments based on the time scales of flow oscillation frequency and time for plates to reach full reconfiguration for different wave orbital excursions. To account for the non-linear motion effect on drag reduction, we derive a scaling model based on the spatially and temporally averaged relative velocity and the prediction performs well. Furthermore, a rich phenomenology of fluid–structure interaction including phase lag, fluid loading distribution, internal elastic energy, vibration resonance, and vortex structure is presented.

    Spatiotemporal changes in waterborne disease risk were evaluated for the Chhnok Tru floating village in the Tonle Sap Lake by combining a hydraulic simulation and quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). First, a three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic simulation was performed, and the transport of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was simulated. Prior to the simulation, by coupling satellite imagery analysis using the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and a sounding survey using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), a new digital elevation model was generated for the complex channel network with high resolution. The results of the 3D hydraulic simulation revealed the flow regime and nonuniform pathogen distribution in the floating village. QMRA was performed for the village using the E. coli distribution calculated by the 3D hydraulic model. Subsequently, the disease risk in the village was visualized through an effective and easy-to-understand disease risk map. To demonstrate the usefulness of the hydraulic-simulation-based disease risk map, the map was used to quantitatively compare simple policies by evaluating their reduction in disease risk.

    The Tonle Sap Lake contains unique hydrological environments and ecosystems. Although water temperature is an important consideration in lake management, information on the water temperature of the lake is limited. Thus, we investigated the characteristics of the daytime water temperatures of the Tonle Sap Lake from 2000 to 2019 using MOD11A1, a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) product. Moreover, the relationship between water temperature fluctuations and hydrological–meteorological conditions was analyzed. The maximum and minimum daytime water temperatures were recorded in May (30.7 °C) and January (24.6 °C), respectively, each a month after the maximum and minimum air temperatures were recorded. The annual maximum, average, and minimum water levels showed a downward trend (−0.14, −0.08, and −0.01 m/y, respectively). The annual maximum water temperature increased at a rate of 0.17 °C/decade, whereas the annual minimum water temperature decreased at a rate of 0.91 °C/decade. The annual maximum daytime water temperature had a strong negative correlation with water level change (flood pulse) and a weaker correlation with air temperature. The annual minimum daytime water temperature presented the strongest positive correlation with water level change (flood pulse) in the previous year. However, there was no correlation between the annual minimum daytime water temperature and air temperature. These results indicate that water temperature in the Tonle Sap Lake is mainly affected by water level fluctuations, which are mainly driven by flood pulses.

    <jats:p>Although most fatalities in tsunami-related disasters are conjectured to be a result of drowning, injury risk owing to collision with other floating debris or fixed buildings has not been studied sufficiently. In this study, the impact force corresponding to the collision of a concrete block and drifting test body in a tsunami wave was experimentally investigated, and the injury risk was evaluated in terms of different biomechanical indexes; specifically, maximum acceleration, head injury criterion, and impact force. The injury risk indicated by the considered indexes was reasonably low. It was noted that if a healthy adult collided with a concrete wall under a velocity of 2.5 m s<jats:sup>-1</jats:sup> and wave height of 0.59 m, the adult would likely not be critically injured. However, a similar collision impact poses considerable risk to infants and children, as well as the more sensitive regions of the adult body. Moreover, in the case of large tsunamis, such as that in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, a drifting person may be at considerable risk for injuries. The collision impact occurring on the tip of a surge flow is notably significantly larger than that on a bore flow. This is because a surge flow, which arrives at the concrete block earlier than a bore flow, forms a certain water layer along the concrete wall and that layer acts as a cushion for any body drifting on the bore flow, indicating the importance of such a buffering effect. These findings can provide practical guidance regarding the formulation of effective tsunami-protection measures.</jats:p>

    A coupled human fluid numerical model was applied to transportion of a water accident sufferer in a channel with a weir-like obstacle on the bed. Simulations were conducted with 80 differrent combinations of water depth, flow velocity and weir height. As a result of the simulations, two different processes for getting over the weir were found. When flow speed exceeds 1m/s, the sufferer suspends in water and gets over the weir. Otherwise, if flow speed exceeds 0.5 m/s and weir’s height is less than 50cm, the sufferer gets over the weir in rolling on weir’s surface.

    A new directional-splitting CIP interpolation with the multi-dimensional Soroban mesh is proposed based on the Type-F CIP interpolation technique with a structured rectangular computational mesh. The proposed scheme does not need to treat the time evolution of the high-order derivatives and largely reduce the memory consumption. The proposed scheme applies to solutions of the two and three dimensional advection equation. The numerical results show that the proposed interpolation retains the third-order accuracy and realize the rapid solution with low memory consumption.

    Features of numerical errors of Tsunami simulation using unstructured triangular meshes with finite volume methods investigated quantitatively. A series of test simulations of the Tsunami wave propagating in thedee(are) p area shows that the numerical diffusion errors strongly depend on the spatial size of mesh, kind of the adopted numerical scheme and the travel distance to be solved. Furthermore, introduction of an Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) technique to the triangular unstructured mesh system is investigated. By conducting numerical simulation of the Tsunami propagation for 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, it is found that the AMR technique can suppress the numerical errors and reduce the required computational loads.

    A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for simulating estuarine dynamics has been developed. The model, called CIP-Soroban flow solver, has been specifically designed for reproducing the current and salinity fields in density-stratified water bodies with a free surface. It is based on the Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP) scheme and the Soroban computational grid system. Simulations of the time-dependent current and salinity fields of the Tone River Estuary have been performed using this model. Two periods are used to examine the predictive capability of the model. The first was in August 1997, which produced extensive field data related to vertical profiles of salinity, which showed evident changes in salinity intrusion processes between spring and neap tides; and the second in August 2001, which produced sufficient data associated with continuous measurements of vertical profiles of velocity, which showed characteristic residual flows averaged over ten tidal cycles. The model is examined in detail to reveal its inherent capability of simulating the dynamic behavior of density flow in the Tone River Estuary. In these two periods, the measured salinity and velocity data are reproduced well by the 3-D model. After investigating the capability of the hydrodynamic model, the dissolved oxygen (DO) transport model is incorporated into the hydrodynamic model to study the role of density stratification and residence time of seawater at the onset and development of hypoxia. The results of a long-term simulation of 100 days show good agreement with the field data.

    A new two-dimensional numerical solver for a water flow in an estuary with a free water surface and arbitrary curved riverbed is proposed. In the proposed method, a three-dimensional k-ε turbulent flow model is averaged in a direction crossing a river and derived two-dimensional equations are solved by applying a CIP-Soroban method. By using the Soroban mesh system, while the physical condition on the surfaces of water body such as "dynamic condition" and "kinematical condition" are easily introduced, computational resolution can be improved effectively by gathering of computational grid points around an arbitral computational area in that the physical value such as salinity changes drastically. The proposed numerical model is applied to a reach of Tone River downstream from an estuary barrage and verification of the proposed method through comparisons with a series of field observation result.

    A new numerical scheme to solve a water flow with a free water surface and arbitrary curved ground surface is proposed. In the proposed method, by using a soroban grid system proposed by one of the authors, computational mesh is reconstruct easily at each time step so that some grid points locate on a free water surface exactly. Time development of velocity components and water surface are calculated according to an incompressible inviscid flow equation without any transformation of the equation. Advection effects are calculated by direct interpolation of the CIP method in 3rd order accuracy in spatial. After the advection is solved, acceleration of velocity components due to the pressure gradient is solved using a FDM approach on a soroban grid system. The proposed method is applied to some problems and computational results are examined through comparisons with results of other FDM scheme and theoretical result.

    津波・高潮等の水際境界の移動を伴う流体運動問題に対して, CIP法と有限要素法を組み合わせた新しい計算法を検討した. この手法によれば, 定型格子を用いながら, 内挿関数により水際位置を追跡しつつ運動方程式を解くことができるので, 水際線の形状が複雑化する場合でも容易に取り扱える可能性がある. 本論文では, 検討の第一段階として, この手法を一様斜面の遡上波に対して適用し, Carrier・Greenspanの理論解と比較した. その結果, 比較的大きな空間刻みの型要素であっても水際位置を正確に追跡でき, また流れ場全体も精度良く計算できることがわかった.

    We performed 1.5-dimensional simulation of the Fokker-Planck equation using the CIP method to investigate femto-second-laser heating processes. We found that the heat flux in the solid part approaches a classical thermal conduction theory like the Spitzer-Härm theory on quite a short time scale ω pt < 100, while the heat flux on the vacuum side becomes free streams that don't depend on the temperature gradient. On the basis of this result, we performed a hydrodynamic simulation using the CIP method with classical thermal conduction. The experimental ablation depth was replicated very well, showing that even fs pulse laser processing can be satisfactorily described by classical heat conduction.

    エネルギー平衡モデル用いる湖沼波浪推算モデルを開発し、計算機クラスターによる高速・低計算負荷風波解析シミュレータを実現した。風波生成にDPモデルを使用することで並列効率の高い、並列波浪推算ソルバーを実装した。霞ヶ浦について、実地形条件を考慮した計算を実行した。現地観測により得られている波高空間分布と時間変動を良好に再現可能であることを確認し、湖沼等の水深が浅く短フェッチな水域においても開発されたモデルにより妥当な波浪推算が行えることを確認した。ソルバーの並列化により、空間解像度を500m程度と詳細にした場合でも、実時間の3割弱の計算時間で高速に解析可能となることを確認し、速報性と詳細性が重要となる波浪災害予報への適用可能性を確認できた。また波浪推算時に必要となる水域内風場の入力データ作成のため、MASCONモデルに基づき粗い気象データから局所風場を推定する支援プログラムを開発した。さらに近年予報精度が急速に向上している気象予報モデルを用いた風場推算の可能性についても検討を行った。現地観測結果との比較により、メソスケール気象モデル(WRFモデル)と国土数値情報データ(国土交通省提供)を組み合わせることで、霞ヶ浦における風場を十分再現しうることが確認できた。これにより、計測が困難である風場の現地観測を一切行わないでも、波浪推算を実行できる可能性が示された。開発した並列化シミュレーションコードはインターネットを通じて公開を行った。波浪シミュレーションコードに加え、入力条件である風場を気象データから推定する支援プログラム(MASCONモデル)も公開し、客観解析データなどの大局的な気象データなどを準備するだけで当該水域における波浪を利用者が解析可能となるようした。

    In this research project, we have studied and developed a plasma simulator for microplasma simulations. In addition, we have tried to understand microplasma physics and to find a microplasma control method in the following research areas. We have also studied on laser particle acceleration, inertial fusion plasma confinement, radiation generation by laser produced plasma, etc by the microplasma simulator. By using the microplasma simulator users can perform simulations through a WEB browser on distributed computers. Without knowing detail information of the distributed computers users can submit their jobs and can retrieve results through the microplasma simulator. In the microplasma simulator an electromagnetic particle-in-cell code, a fluid code and a Vlasov code were also developed. In the laser electron acceleration a TEM (1,0)+(0,1) mode laser is employed to produce high-density short-pulse (atto second) electron beam. The pre-accelerated electors are trapped in transverse and compressed in longitudinal by the TEM (1,0)+(0,1) mode laser. An intense short pulse laser is employed to produce a collimated proton beam; in this study the intense short pulse laser illuminates a thin aluminum foil, which has many holes at the rear side of the foil target. By the tailored hole target a collimated proton beam was successfully produced. We have also proposed a new control method of laser-produced proton beam energy spectrum by employing an additional cover layer. The laser-produced collimated ion beam can be used for ion cancer therapy, material processing, etc. In a discharge study under water we found a photoionization is essentially important. A mm-radius microplasma jet was also produced for a fine material processing. We have also succeeded to produce a THz radiation by using a laser-illuminated transparent semiconductor.

    In conventional manuals for river improvement works, in which ordinary river channels are taken as a standard object of planning, do not refer to the special aspects of the estuarine part of downstream reaches. In this research, aiming the future reform of the standard of river improvement works, hydraulic factors related to the fine sedimentation in estuaries are investigated in downstream reaches of some rivers whose hydraulic characteristics are different from one another.
    In Tone River Estuary, suspension of fine sediment was measured in the salt wedge by using some up-to-date measurement techniques including acoustic turbulence measurement, and the effect of fine sediment on the formation of hypoxia in the head of salt wedge was estimated. In Oppa Bay, where Kitakami River flows in, the deterioration of bay water by the effect of river freshets containing a lot of fine sediment was investigated through field observation and satellite image analysis. In Takase River Estuary, the effect of bed topography, especially of shallow area made by the deposition of fine sediment, on the salt water intrusion was estimated by field measurements and numerical simulation.

    前年度は取組むべき衝突項として荷電粒子系に対するFokker-Planck(FP)型衝突項を取り上げ、従来高計算負荷が障害となっていた直接解法の実現策として、その高速演算を実現しうる専用計算機の設計・開発、および専用計算機による演算高速化の有効性について検証を行った。多重積分専用パイプフインを大規模Programmable Logic Device(PLD)上へ実装した実証機による一連の検証から、複数PLDの使用によるパイプライン多本化でおよそ10GFLOPS程度まで衝突項演算を高速化可能である見通しを得た。本年度は、前年度で示された結果を基とし、開発された専用計算ボードと組み合わされる、非衝突過程解析に供されるVlasov方程式の数値解析コードの開発が進められた。高次元位相空間内での解析となるVlasov方程式の数値解析には高速演算の計算機環境が必須となる。これを可能とする方法として、汎用計算機による計算機クラスタに着目し、同システム上で実行される並列化Vlasovコードの構築を行った。同コードはConstrained Interpolation Profile(CIP)法に基づいて開発が行われ、その過程において既存のCIP法における補間方法の改良・提案が行われた。さらに、開発された並列Vlasovコードの相対論的多粒子系への拡張を行い、Maxwellコードの組込みにより粒子・電磁界相互作用等の複雑問題への適用が可能となった。開発されたVlasovコードは非衝突過程が支配的な物理系として電子の電磁場加速である逆制動放射加速を例題として精度面での検証が行われ、開発された並列化コードが良好な精度と効率を持つことが確認された。専用計算機による衝突過程の高速解法と本年度開発された計算機クラスタシステムを使用したVlasov方程式の数値解析手法により、従来には無い高精度な衝突過程をも含めた分布関数の数値解析手段が実現された。
