    The present work numerically investigates the dynamics of inclined thin flexible plates in oscillatory flows to assess the effects of bending stiffness, wave orbital excursion and inclination angle on plate deflection, reconfiguration, drag force and energy conversion. Four distinct structural response modes are identified, together with their transition conditions. An analytical expression for the lift coefficient of inclined rigid plates in the oscillatory flow is derived. By combining the drag and lift coefficients, we propose a modified Cauchy number, which quantitatively reveals the inclination effect from both geometric and mechanical perspectives. The dynamic behaviours of the plate deflection can be separated into two states. In the fully reconfigured state, a balance is achieved between elastic restoring force and hydrodynamics-driven force. Based on moment and energy balance, we derive a scaling law incorporating the modified Cauchy number, which accurately predicts the variation of tip deflection. In the passive movement state, the flexible plate moves passively along the flow, and its tip deflection saturates to the order of wave orbital excursions. A pronounced drag reduction is induced by the plate reconfiguration, following a $-1$ scaling law with a combined parameter, which is explained by the model of effective plate length. The energy conversion from fluid kinetic energy to structural elastic strain energy first increases and then decreases with increasing flexibility, yielding an optimal energy conversion efficiency. The modified Cauchy-number-based scaling law accurately predicts the averaged elastic energy growth and critical conditions for optimal energy conversion through a time scale competition mechanism.

    Abstract

    To reveal the effect of ground on the force behavior, propulsion performance, and vortex dynamics of a flapping foil, we numerically study a flapping foil actuated by combined heaving and pitching motions with large amplitudes near a solid ground surface. The instantaneous forces in both streamwise and cross-stream directions undergo a sudden drop during upstroke in close ground effect. The time-averaged thrust is enhanced by the ground but varies non-monotonically with ground distance at high foil oscillating frequencies. Three force regimes are identified in lift production, giving rise to two equilibrium altitudes of zero lift, one stable and another unstable. Moreover, we propose a simple scaling law model by a path-length-based Strouhal number and ground effect for thrust and power performance of a large-amplitude flapping foil. The results of the model are consistent with numerical results and previous experimental studies. The vortex dynamics in the wake structure are largely affected by ground proximity; in particular, the formed vortex pairs and their orientations are sensitive to their initial relative positions. Different sources and mechanisms of satellite vortex formation are then discussed. The ground exerts little effect on the phase angles that optimize the propulsive efficiency. This study is expected to provide new insights into the development and maneuvering of flapping foil-based propulsive systems.

    The present work numerically studies the dynamics of a two-dimensional wall-mounted flexible plate in an oscillatory flow, aiming to assess the effect of structure bending stiffness and wave orbital excursion on the plate deflection, reconfiguration, and drag reduction. Different modes of dynamic responding behaviors are identified such as quasi-linear, linear, non-linear, and irregular modes with varied studying parameters. The plates of the quasi-linear mode show a fully reconfigured state in oscillatory flow with different wave excursions, of which the tip deflection and effective length for the reconfiguration effect are analyzed and the scaling laws are derived based on force and energy balances. With decreasing elasticity, the plates through linear motion show the limitation of reconfiguration and move passively and rigorously following along oscillatory flow with zero phase lag, wherein the tip deflections saturate to the same order as wave excursions and the effective lengths change slightly where the bending stiffness effect is insignificant. A critical Cauchy number, Cacri, which separates the fully reconfigured state and passive movement state, is proposed using the scaling arguments based on the time scales of flow oscillation frequency and time for plates to reach full reconfiguration for different wave orbital excursions. To account for the non-linear motion effect on drag reduction, we derive a scaling model based on the spatially and temporally averaged relative velocity and the prediction performs well. Furthermore, a rich phenomenology of fluid–structure interaction including phase lag, fluid loading distribution, internal elastic energy, vibration resonance, and vortex structure is presented.

    Spatiotemporal changes in waterborne disease risk were evaluated for the Chhnok Tru floating village in the Tonle Sap Lake by combining a hydraulic simulation and quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). First, a three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic simulation was performed, and the transport of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was simulated. Prior to the simulation, by coupling satellite imagery analysis using the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and a sounding survey using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), a new digital elevation model was generated for the complex channel network with high resolution. The results of the 3D hydraulic simulation revealed the flow regime and nonuniform pathogen distribution in the floating village. QMRA was performed for the village using the E. coli distribution calculated by the 3D hydraulic model. Subsequently, the disease risk in the village was visualized through an effective and easy-to-understand disease risk map. To demonstrate the usefulness of the hydraulic-simulation-based disease risk map, the map was used to quantitatively compare simple policies by evaluating their reduction in disease risk.

    The Tonle Sap Lake contains unique hydrological environments and ecosystems. Although water temperature is an important consideration in lake management, information on the water temperature of the lake is limited. Thus, we investigated the characteristics of the daytime water temperatures of the Tonle Sap Lake from 2000 to 2019 using MOD11A1, a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers (MODIS) product. Moreover, the relationship between water temperature fluctuations and hydrological–meteorological conditions was analyzed. The maximum and minimum daytime water temperatures were recorded in May (30.7 °C) and January (24.6 °C), respectively, each a month after the maximum and minimum air temperatures were recorded. The annual maximum, average, and minimum water levels showed a downward trend (−0.14, −0.08, and −0.01 m/y, respectively). The annual maximum water temperature increased at a rate of 0.17 °C/decade, whereas the annual minimum water temperature decreased at a rate of 0.91 °C/decade. The annual maximum daytime water temperature had a strong negative correlation with water level change (flood pulse) and a weaker correlation with air temperature. The annual minimum daytime water temperature presented the strongest positive correlation with water level change (flood pulse) in the previous year. However, there was no correlation between the annual minimum daytime water temperature and air temperature. These results indicate that water temperature in the Tonle Sap Lake is mainly affected by water level fluctuations, which are mainly driven by flood pulses.

    Although most fatalities in tsunami-related disasters are conjectured to be a result of drowning, injury risk owing to collision with other floating debris or fixed buildings has not been studied sufficiently. In this study, the impact force corresponding to the collision of a concrete block and drifting test body in a tsunami wave was experimentally investigated, and the injury risk was evaluated in terms of different biomechanical indexes; specifically, maximum acceleration, head injury criterion, and impact force. The injury risk indicated by the considered indexes was reasonably low. It was noted that if a healthy adult collided with a concrete wall under a velocity of 2.5 m s-1 and wave height of 0.59 m, the adult would likely not be critically injured. However, a similar collision impact poses considerable risk to infants and children, as well as the more sensitive regions of the adult body. Moreover, in the case of large tsunamis, such as that in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, a drifting person may be at considerable risk for injuries. The collision impact occurring on the tip of a surge flow is notably significantly larger than that on a bore flow. This is because a surge flow, which arrives at the concrete block earlier than a bore flow, forms a certain water layer along the concrete wall and that layer acts as a cushion for any body drifting on the bore flow, indicating the importance of such a buffering effect. These findings can provide practical guidance regarding the formulation of effective tsunami-protection measures.

    Abstract

    Large, shallow‐water lakes located on floodplains play an important role in creating highly productive ecosystems and are prone to high concentrations of suspended solids due to sediment resuspension. In this study, the aim was to determine the dominant processes governing the total suspended solid (TSS) concentration at the water surface in Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia, which is a large, shallow‐water lake. Satellite remotely sensed daily reflectance data from 2003 to 2017 were used. Seasonal changes in TSS concentration indicated that bottom sediment resuspension during dry seasons was mostly caused by wind and the TSS concentration was closely correlated with the water depth of the lake. The TSS concentration during flood periods was controlled by both wind and inflow currents from the Tonle Sap River. Additionally, we confirmed that surface/subsurface flow with a low TSS concentration from forests on the floodplain lowered the TSS concentration year round, except during August and September. This fact implied that the floodplain forest area decrease may increase the lake TSS concentration. An analysis of the long‐term changes in TSS indicated that a decrease in the water level during flood periods resulted in the high TSS concentrations observed during the subsequent dry periods. Therefore, climate change and water resource development, which are likely to cause water level reductions in the Mekong River during flood periods, may increase the TSS concentration in Tonle Sap Lake, particularly during the dry season.

    A new directional-splitting CIP interpolation with the multi-dimensional Soroban mesh is proposed based on the Type-F CIP interpolation technique with a structured rectangular computational mesh. The proposed scheme does not need to treat the time evolution of the high-order derivatives and largely reduce the memory consumption. The proposed scheme applies to solutions of the two and three dimensional advection equation. The numerical results show that the proposed interpolation retains the third-order accuracy and realize the rapid solution with low memory consumption.

    Sedimentation process in the Joumine Reservoir located in the semi-arid area of North Tunisia was studied by numerical simulation. The major sediment component flowing into the reservoir is fine silt of about 5 μm in diameter, and the high SS water carried by floods generates high-turbid current along the reservoir bed. A vertical 2-D flow model was developed to simulate the high-turbid flow, and the model performance was verified by comparison with the data obtained from field measurements. The model reproduced the longitudinal profile of bed deformation for 23 years after the dam construction fairly well. The computation showed the unsteady sedimentation process, in which the small and middle scale floods result in sediment deposition in the upstream reach while the self-accelerating gravity current caused by the large scale floods picks up and transports the sediment downstream to the deepest area near the dam body.

    We first pay attention to the inflight charge state distribution in a Pb ion beam propagating in a reactor-sized chamber delimited by metallic walls. We thus compare Livermore (code BIC) and Orsay (code BPIC) distributions in the presence of a residual Flibe gas pressure. Next, we replace the electron plasma due to Flibe ionization by a gliding plasma produced by the polarization of the incoming ion beam on insulating walls. Corresponding electrons, when attracted by the beam, are demonstrated to yield a very efficient current neutralization.

    Key issues of heavy ion beam (HIB) inertial confinement fusion (ICF) include an efficient stable beam transport, beam focusing, uniform fuel pellet implosion, and so on. To realize a HIB fine focus on a fuel pellet, space-charge neutralization of incident focusing HIB is required at the HIB final transport just after a final focusing element in an HIB accelerator. In this article, an insulator annular tube guide is proposed at the final transport part, through which a HIB is transported. The physical mechanism of HIB charge neutralization based on an insulator annular guide is as follows: A local electric field created by HIB induces local discharges, and plasma is produced on the insulator inner surface. Then electrons are extracted from the plasma by the HIB net space charge. The electrons emitted neutralize the HIB space charge well.

    We study the beam nonuniformity smoothing effect of radiation transport in the density valley formed by an ion-beam deposition in a heavy ion-beam inertial confinement fusion pellet by numerical simulations. The simulation results show that the radiation energy is confined in the density valley, and the beam nonuniformity can be smoothed out by the radiation transport along the density valley. In addition, an estimation for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability during the implosion phase is also presented.

    In these days personal computers (PCs) became an essential part of today&rsquo;s school education. However teachers or lecturers meet difficulties to obtain the information about how all the students operate computers or which softwares they use. In this work we construct a teaching assistant system which acquires information about the student&rsquo;s computer operation and analyzes the information. The system, that is called a TSUNA-TASTE, consists of four major components. The first component is a distributed agent that is installed in each student&rsquo;s personal computer and acquires the student operation information. The second component is a teaching assistant server that communicates with the agents and analyzes the information. The third component is a database system which stores the student operation information and other configuration data. The fourth is a communication system using a WWW server and a browser. In this paper we present and discuss a design concept of the system and the details of each component.

    In this paper, we present and construct a distributed problem solving environment (PSE) for partial differential equation (PDE) based problems. The system inputs a problem information including a discretization and computation scheme, and outputs a program flow and also a C-language source code for the problem. On a host computer a user inputs his/her problem, and the host navigates the user to solve the problem. The distributed PSE for PDEs consists of several modules: a problem description module, a discretization one, an equation manipulation one, a program design one and a program generation one. Each module is distributed on distributed computers, and the whole information is described by the Extensible Markup Language (XML) including the Mathematical Markup Language (MathML); each distributed module communicates with the host module by using XML documents, so that outputs from each modules are visualized. Independent modules which are developed by other engineers or users for one of the functions specified above can be also used after adjustments to the distributed PSE interface, if necessary. Therefore the concept of the distributed PSE extends the potential of conventional PSE systems. The system is implemented by the Java language with the Document Object Model (DOM), in order to make the system a networked and distributed PSE.

    A continental large river has a water resource potential for the improvement of agricultural productivity while frequent floods restrict the farmland development. Though flood control projects were proposed for such area, the current benefit measurement counts only the direct benefit such as the properties saved by the flood control. On the other hand, the indirect benefit that would be brought by the improvement of food self-sufficiency rate with extension of new farmland was ignored. Finally the flood control project was rejected. This study discussed about the revision of the cost-benefit analysis focusing on the following 2 points of view.(1)High resolution and high speed computational model of inundation, targeting the wide flood plain, was developed. Calculation efficiency was significantly improved. (2)Productivity and Demand analysis of rice in the study area quantifies the economical benefit by the self-sufficiency improvement following to the farmland development.

    湖沼水質の形成過程やリスクを理解し、水環境解析ツールを開発 トンレサップ湖は世界的に貴重な生態系で大切な水環境。しかし、水質の悪化や生物資源の減少などその環境が変化している。私たちはトンレサップ湖とその周辺を対象として、現地研究者と共同で湖の水理・水質モデル(水環境解析ツール)を開発し、健康リスクや生態系リスクに着目した環境保全案を示す。さらに、研究者、行政機関、市民が共同で湖沼環境を保全するための枠組み(水環境プラットフォーム)を構築する。 水環境解析ツールを活用し、湖沼環境保全の枠組みを構築 水環境解析ツールを活用することで、人口増加や気候変動などを想定して、健康リスクや生態系リスクを低減するための水環境保全案を示す。そして、このツールと水環境プラットフォームを組み合わせることで、トンレサップ湖さらにはメコン川流域の持続可能な発展に貢献する。

In this project, we proposed a practical method of flow analysis for the designing of confluence channels by combining the technique of stereo image analysis of the aerial photographs of flood flow and the quasi-3D shallow water simulation model with unstructured triangular mesh system. The drag force of the tree communities was also taken into consideration based on the results of a field survey.
    The method was applied to the flood flow occurred in the confluence of the Tone River and Watarase River. The stereo image analysis showed the detailed surface flow characteristics. The quasi-3D flow simulation reproduced the surface flow successfully, and revealed the three dimensional flow characteristics under the water surface which are useful for the design of river confluence.

    エネルギー平衡モデル用いる湖沼波浪推算モデルを開発し、計算機クラスターによる高速・低計算負荷風波解析シミュレータを実現した。風波生成にDPモデルを使用することで並列効率の高い、並列波浪推算ソルバーを実装した。霞ヶ浦について、実地形条件を考慮した計算を実行した。現地観測により得られている波高空間分布と時間変動を良好に再現可能であることを確認し、湖沼等の水深が浅く短フェッチな水域においても開発されたモデルにより妥当な波浪推算が行えることを確認した。ソルバーの並列化により、空間解像度を500m程度と詳細にした場合でも、実時間の3割弱の計算時間で高速に解析可能となることを確認し、速報性と詳細性が重要となる波浪災害予報への適用可能性を確認できた。また波浪推算時に必要となる水域内風場の入力データ作成のため、MASCONモデルに基づき粗い気象データから局所風場を推定する支援プログラムを開発した。さらに近年予報精度が急速に向上している気象予報モデルを用いた風場推算の可能性についても検討を行った。現地観測結果との比較により、メソスケール気象モデル(WRFモデル)と国土数値情報データ(国土交通省提供)を組み合わせることで、霞ヶ浦における風場を十分再現しうることが確認できた。これにより、計測が困難である風場の現地観測を一切行わないでも、波浪推算を実行できる可能性が示された。開発した並列化シミュレーションコードはインターネットを通じて公開を行った。波浪シミュレーションコードに加え、入力条件である風場を気象データから推定する支援プログラム(MASCONモデル)も公開し、客観解析データなどの大局的な気象データなどを準備するだけで当該水域における波浪を利用者が解析可能となるようした。

    In this research project, we have studied and developed a plasma simulator for microplasma simulations. In addition, we have tried to understand microplasma physics and to find a microplasma control method in the following research areas. We have also studied on laser particle acceleration, inertial fusion plasma confinement, radiation generation by laser produced plasma, etc by the microplasma simulator. By using the microplasma simulator users can perform simulations through a WEB browser on distributed computers. Without knowing detail information of the distributed computers users can submit their jobs and can retrieve results through the microplasma simulator. In the microplasma simulator an electromagnetic particle-in-cell code, a fluid code and a Vlasov code were also developed. In the laser electron acceleration a TEM (1,0)+(0,1) mode laser is employed to produce high-density short-pulse (atto second) electron beam. The pre-accelerated electors are trapped in transverse and compressed in longitudinal by the TEM (1,0)+(0,1) mode laser. An intense short pulse laser is employed to produce a collimated proton beam; in this study the intense short pulse laser illuminates a thin aluminum foil, which has many holes at the rear side of the foil target. By the tailored hole target a collimated proton beam was successfully produced. We have also proposed a new control method of laser-produced proton beam energy spectrum by employing an additional cover layer. The laser-produced collimated ion beam can be used for ion cancer therapy, material processing, etc. In a discharge study under water we found a photoionization is essentially important. A mm-radius microplasma jet was also produced for a fine material processing. We have also succeeded to produce a THz radiation by using a laser-illuminated transparent semiconductor.

    前年度は取組むべき衝突項として荷電粒子系に対するFokker-Planck(FP)型衝突項を取り上げ、従来高計算負荷が障害となっていた直接解法の実現策として、その高速演算を実現しうる専用計算機の設計・開発、および専用計算機による演算高速化の有効性について検証を行った。多重積分専用パイプフインを大規模Programmable Logic Device(PLD)上へ実装した実証機による一連の検証から、複数PLDの使用によるパイプライン多本化でおよそ10GFLOPS程度まで衝突項演算を高速化可能である見通しを得た。本年度は、前年度で示された結果を基とし、開発された専用計算ボードと組み合わされる、非衝突過程解析に供されるVlasov方程式の数値解析コードの開発が進められた。高次元位相空間内での解析となるVlasov方程式の数値解析には高速演算の計算機環境が必須となる。これを可能とする方法として、汎用計算機による計算機クラスタに着目し、同システム上で実行される並列化Vlasovコードの構築を行った。同コードはConstrained Interpolation Profile(CIP)法に基づいて開発が行われ、その過程において既存のCIP法における補間方法の改良・提案が行われた。さらに、開発された並列Vlasovコードの相対論的多粒子系への拡張を行い、Maxwellコードの組込みにより粒子・電磁界相互作用等の複雑問題への適用が可能となった。開発されたVlasovコードは非衝突過程が支配的な物理系として電子の電磁場加速である逆制動放射加速を例題として精度面での検証が行われ、開発された並列化コードが良好な精度と効率を持つことが確認された。専用計算機による衝突過程の高速解法と本年度開発された計算機クラスタシステムを使用したVlasov方程式の数値解析手法により、従来には無い高精度な衝突過程をも含めた分布関数の数値解析手段が実現された。

    In conventional manuals for river improvement works, in which ordinary river channels are taken as a standard object of planning, do not refer to the special aspects of the estuarine part of downstream reaches. In this research, aiming the future reform of the standard of river improvement works, hydraulic factors related to the fine sedimentation in estuaries are investigated in downstream reaches of some rivers whose hydraulic characteristics are different from one another.
    In Tone River Estuary, suspension of fine sediment was measured in the salt wedge by using some up-to-date measurement techniques including acoustic turbulence measurement, and the effect of fine sediment on the formation of hypoxia in the head of salt wedge was estimated. In Oppa Bay, where Kitakami River flows in, the deterioration of bay water by the effect of river freshets containing a lot of fine sediment was investigated through field observation and satellite image analysis. In Takase River Estuary, the effect of bed topography, especially of shallow area made by the deposition of fine sediment, on the salt water intrusion was estimated by field measurements and numerical simulation.
