    The aim of the present project is to clarify the characteristics of mediaeval design methods at Churches in Caucasian region which has been situated at the meeting point between the Western and the Eastern cultures, based on surveyed data on the extant historical monuments in Armenia and Georgia.
    As a result, while the possible length standards for architectural design are extracted by analyzing measured data of target monuments, and their design methods are clarified by observing relation among architectural forms, composition of architectural elements and the building techniques, the characteristics and its development in the concerning architectural cultures is illuminated. Moreover, collaborating with the professors on structural engineering and the local researchers, the exhaustive survey has continued to complete all monuments in these countries and analyzing structural features of the monuments has also executed, for utilizing in future restoration as a reference.

    The aim of the present project is to illuminate the characteristics of each of the architectural traditions found in the region amalgamated with Christian and Islamic culture and trace their interaction- notably from a structural viewpoint, too often neglected in previous studies- in an attempt to reach beyond differences of religion. As a combined result of several concerned analyses, a proposal of reinforcement of Katoghike church in Etchmiadzin of Armenia has been released to the Armenian Catholicos.

    The present study clarifies some of the history of style in the medieval Armenian churches, through the chronological and morphological analyses about the ornaments and decorations on the wall, based on the data collected by the inventory survey on the field. As a result, it is revealed that the usage and the disposition of the sculptural ornaments are mainly based on the stone masonry of rubble-core system adopted as the construction method. Moreover, the morphological and constructional characteristics of the external niches which is one of the targets for analyses are clarified and their chronological transitions are regarded as a chronological index divided the duration of the target, from the fourth to the fourteenth centuries, into four periodizations.
