In this paper, a SRC flat beam system, which was rigid frame construction that consisted with SRC flat beams and normal SRC columns, was researched. The flat beam of this system has wider width than columns have and shorter depth than normal beams have. Steel is placed eccentrically in a beam section if the flat beam and the column were jointed eccentrically. In this case, it is necessary to consider unsymmetrical bending when flexural strength of the SRC flat beam section is estimated. In this study, cyclic loading test of a SRC cruciform joint specimen was carried out to investigate performance of the SRC flat beam system. As a result, the specimen showed restoring force characteristics of flexural type, and an estimating method of flexural strength of SRC section that had eccentricity of steel was shown in this paper.

RC flat beam system, which was rigid frame construction that consisted with RC flat beams and normal RC columns, were researched and developed in the previous study, by the authors. The flat beam of this system has wider width than columns have shorter depth than normal beams have. In this study, high strength RC used for the flat beam system. In order to invetigate performance of high strength RC flat beam system, cyslic loading test of two beam-column joint specimens were carried out, which one is cruciform joint specimen, the other is corner joint specimen. As results, it can be said that there were no serious problem in this system. All the specimens showed restoring force characteristics of flexural type, and flexural strength could be estimated by traditional ways.An estimating method of stiffness of RC flat and column joint was shown in this paper.

In "Design Guidelines for Earthquake Resistant Reinforced Concrete Buildings Based on Inelastic Displacement Concept", published in AIJ, the shear strength formula does not consider the effect by longitudinal reinforcement ratio and axial force that is observed in numbers of empirical examinations. This is due to the assumption that longitudinal reinforcement bars do not yield. In this paper, we rebuild theoretical fomula limited to truss mechanism based on upper bound theorem by considering the fracture mechanism putting yield limit of longitudinal reinforcement, that is same as Doi assumed. The solutions can prove the rise of shear strength by rise of shear reinforcement, longitudinal reinforcement, or axial force. Those can also prove that the influence of axial force changes according to the amount of longitudinal reinforcement that is shown in past empirical data. By introducing the effective coefficients to each parameters of the solutions and letting the coefficients reflect past empirical data, we found out that longitudinal reinforcement and axial force contribute to shear strength, but do not contribute than shear reinforcement.

The purpose of this study is to grasp influences of multi-story mullion-type walls on behavior of RC structure frame analytically. A fiber-model is applied to the mullion-type walls, and 1 span multi-story RC frame structures which have the multi-story mullion-type walls and which are designed without regarding ones as structual elements are analized with push-over method. The conclusions are as follows. Mullion-type walls can raise horizontal load-carrying capacity, but there is possibility of story-collapse at lower story in the case of a structure with many stories. The mullion-type walls may affect upper structural elements because of the accumulation of the axial elongations of the mullion-type walls. Axial elongations of the mullion-type walls whitch exsist in a lower story are suppressed, so that, some additional axial force ratios of ones rise to more than 0.3-0.4.

Torsional vibration is likely to occur in a symmetrical buildings consisting of independent shear walls and bare RC frames, when severe earthquake attacks and the walls and the frames yield, because the structure becomes eccentric in strength. In this paper, the authors investigate the degree of this phenomenon by two way dynamic analysis. In the analytical model, the walls are modeled to beam element in which shear deformation is taken account. Two directional elasto-plastic behavior of columns, that is, axial yielding in the wall direction and flexural yielding in another direction is considered based on the plastic theory. As the result, the torsional vibration occurs when the structure yields, however, its influence on the response is rather small. Lateral displacement of the end walls is 1.4 times larger than that at the center of gravity due to the torsional deformation in the analysis.

Based on the orthotropic hypoelasticity formulation, a triaxial constitutive model of concrete is proposed. To account for increasing ductility in high confinement of concrete, the ductility enhancement is considered using so called the strain enhancement factor. It is also developed a three-dimensional finite element model for reinforced concrete structural members based on the proposed constitutive law of concrete with the smeared crack approach. The concrete confinement effects due to the beam-column joint are investigated through numerical examples for simple beam and structural beam member. Concrete at compression fibers in the vicinity of beam-column joint behaves dominant not only by the uniaxial compressive state but also by the biaxial and triaxial compressive states. For the reason of the severe confinement of concrete in the beam-column joint, the flexural critical cross-section is observed at a small distance away from the beam-column joint. These observations should be utilized for the economic design when the concrete structural members are subjected to high confinement due to the influence of beam-column joint.

In this paper, the authors propose a new earthquake response analysis method applying Newmark's β-method and using Fiber-Model. In general, the tangential stiffness of every structural member is necessary for earthquake response analyses, however in the case Fiber-Model is applied to the columns subject to bi-directional moments or variable axial forces, it is impossible to calculate the stiffness. In the proposed method, the equation of equilibrium in Fiber-Model is directly solved by giving the equation of motion as a restricted condition without calculating the tangential stiffness. The authors show its propriety by applying it to a RC column of a single-mass and three-degree-of-freedom system and a 1-span 1-story plane frame.

RC column specimens generally have stiff stubs at their ends. But they differ from actual columns influenced by beams and slabs in boundary conditions. In this paper, Specimens with boundary conditions of actual structure or stiff stub were made and tested. The conclusions are as follows. The bending strength and ductility of internal columns is equal even if they have different boundary conditions. External columns with boundary condition of actual structure is equal to specimen with stiff stub in deformability, but inferior to that in bending strength. Boundary conditions of column specimens affect plastic hinge zone and its curvature.

In order to investigate the effects of restraint conditions and stress concentrations on the compressive strength of concrete by three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis, concrete prisms with the several height/width ratios(h/w) under compressive loads were analyzed. Concrete materials were modeled as an elastic strain-hardening plasticity materials in the pre-failure region, and as an elastic and linear strain-softening materials with the concept of shear retention factor in tension in the post-cracking region. For unrestrained loading surfaces, the compressive ultimate load carrying capacities were the same regardless of the effects of height/width ratios, however, for restrained loading surfaces, the shorter the height, the higher the compressive ultimate load carrying capacity is. It is demonstrated that the compressive strength of concrete changes according to the restraint conditions.

In order to investigate the effect of restraint condition on the compressive strength of concrete, RC structural members subjected to the axial combined transverse loads were analyzed by 3-D FE model. By analysis, it was known that the stress state of concrete at critical region is not a purely uniaxial compressive stress state but a triaxial stress state, This causes the peak compressive stress of concrete at critical region to be larger than the uniaxial compressive strength and the factor of the equivalent rectangular stress block, k, to be larger than 0.85.

This paper is the second report on the new method to improve flexural ductility of RC columns using particular bars cut near critical section. In this paper, the effectiveness of using severed bars discussed through an experiment of RC columns with more practical situation and condition than that in the previous paper. The issue of strain concentration to steel bars due to discontinuous change in section property at the severed position is also discussed. It is concluded that proposed method is quite effective to improve flexural ductility also in more practical situation.

This paper deals with shear strength concerning bond stress between steel and concrete in SRC members. A theoretical shear strength is led based on the upper bound theorem in plastic analysis, and assuming idealized deformation and failure surface in members. The proposed formula indicates that the shear strength depends on an axial load level, and its adequacy is confirmed empirically. Bond characteristic between steel plate and concrete is also investigated empirically, varying lateral confinement stress of the concrete. Finally the condition that such a brittle failure can be avoided is reconsidered using the knowledge obtained in the above experiments.

In this paper, a new method to improve flexural ductility of reinforced concrete column is proposed. This new method is to add peculiar longitudinal bars symmetrically wrought so as to be effective against compression but not effective against tension. The members with those additional bars may have the same performance as the ones in which the longitudinal bars are arranged eccentrically presented in the previous paper while they keep symmetrical section required to the interior column. Their seismic performance was investigated empirically as they were compared with the ordinary members'. According to the authors' expectation, the proposed method greatly improves the ductility of the members.

In nuclear-related facilities, many concete walls and slabs are lined with thin stainless steel plates in order to insure against the risk of accidental air leakage during a severe earthquake. These liners are forcibly deformed with the deformation of the concrete walls and slabs during an earthquake. The purpose of this paper is to obtain basic empirical data on the shearing behaviour of thin steel plates attached to concrete, especially to understand the relationship between the shear strain of the plate and its lateral displacement, as fundamental research on the safety of lining plates. A new apparatus for measuring the lateral displacement of a lining plate by continuously scanning its surface is tested. The apparatus proves to be quite effective for understanding the buckling wave of the lining plate and the essential behaviour of a thin steel plate attached to a concrete wall subject to a shear force is clarified.

This paper is concerned with the change in tensile strength of cement mortar sibjected to rapid drying and water supply after drying. Flexural strength was investigated for several cement paste specimens cured in water for a certain period, with some specimens dried for 1 day and cured again in water after drying. As a result, it is known that the flexural strength of the specimen allowed to dry becomes about 1 3 of that of a sound specimen, but it is almost recovered after about 3 h water curing after drying. The reason why the strength changes is usually connected with a restrained stress due to drying shrinkage and a stress relaxation due to expansion caused by water absorption. However, when the restrained stress at the surface overtakes the tensile strength, and a considerable number of minute cracks occur, as was observed, the above explanation cannot be accepted, because the tensile stress is almost perfectly relaxed by the occurrence of the cracks. In this paper, the reason for the strength recovery as a result of water absorption is reconsidered by means of stress analysis and microscopic examination of the cracks. © 1995.

This paper discusses the ultimate strength of beam-column joint panel consist of steel beam and steel hoop concrete column subjected to biaxial bending moment and shear. The previous mechanical model proposed based on the uniaxial behavior of the panel, is improved so as to be applicable to biaxial bending and shear. The empirical maximum strength of the panel subjected to biaxial bending moment and shear is well explained by the model improved in this study.

Frexural strength of R/C member is generally calculated, based on the Bernoulli's assumption, and using the concrete strength obtained from the cylinder test. As for a short column subjected to compression and shear-bending, the calculated strength often becomes lower than the experimental strength. The present authors consider that the disagreement between the calculated strength and the experimental strength is caused by using the cylinder test result, but this has not been investigated in detail. This paper aims to make clear the compressive properties of concrete in R/C member. The behavior of concrete around the critical section of R/C column were examined through a shear-bending test under compression. An equivalent rectangular stress distribution is assumed to calculate the concrete strength. As a result, the concrete strength at the critical section is 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than the strength obtained from the cylinder test.

This paper discusses the restoring force characteristics of Steel-Hoop-Concrete (SHC) composite column. Cyclic-loading experiments in which the point of inflection is fixed are generally carried out in order to estimate the restoring force characteristics of SRC or RC column. But at the time of earthquake, top end and bottom end of column get independent end rotations, and the point of inflection moves in column. Considering that there is few bond between concrete and steel in SHC column, the restoring force characteristics of SHC column cannot be sufficiently estimated only by the above experiments. So the following experiments were carried out. The experimental parameters are the amount of hoop reinforcements and compelled end rotation history. Nine specimens of 21 cm × 21 cm cross section and 80 cm length were tested. H-shaped steel (SS41, 150×100×3.2×4.5) was encased in each specimen and the compressive strength of concrete was about 450 kg/cm^2. The experimental results were examined analytically using Degrading Stiffness Tri-Linear Model (D-Tri Model) and Giberson's End Spring Model. The following conclusions were obtained in this study. (1) The ultimate strength of SHC composite column can be roughly estimated by additional theorem. (2) The restoring force characteristic of SHC column with sufficient hoop reinforcements are stable even when the independent compelled end rotation histories act on both ends of column. (3) The restoring force characteristics of SHC column can be roughly formulated by using D-Tri Model when end rotation histories of both ends of column are the same. (4) The restoring force characteristic of SHC column can be roughly formulated by using Giberson's End Spring Model except for the case that the uniform bending moment act on the column.
