Abstract

In the context of the urgent need to establish sustainable food systems, community-supported agriculture (CSA), in which consumers share risks with producers, has gained increasing attention. Understanding the factors that influence consumer participation in CSA is crucial, yet the complete picture and interrelations of these factors remain unclear in existing studies. This research adopts a scoping review and the KJ method to elucidate the factors influencing consumer participation in CSA and to theorize consumer participation. In particular, we focus on the dynamics of individual decision-making for participation, under the premise that individuals are embedded in socio-cultural environments. We examine the decision-making process based on the seesaw of expected gains and losses from participation, along with the reflexivity to the individual and the process of updating decision-making post-participation. Our study highlights how individual decision-making for participation is influenced by relationships with others within the embedded socio-cultural environment, as well as by attachment and connection to the community. It also shows that discrepancies between expectations and experiences post-participation, and the transformation of the social capital, promote the updating of decision-making processes. In addition, among the factors identified in this study for participation in CSA, the decision to participate was heavily influenced by expectations of “variety of ingredients,” suggesting that other factors such as “food education and learning opportunities,” “contribution to environmental and social issues,” and “connections with people and nature” had little impact. Although there are limitations, the insights gained from this study offer profound implications for stakeholders and provide valuable insights for more sustainable and efficient CSA practices.

The aim of this study is to create a system to support cooperative prevention of accidents during mealtime among users of elderly care facilities. Experiments were conducted with 10 healthy adults to define abnormal postures during swallowing and extract responses to abnormal posture warnings by a communication robot. The participants were asked to tilt their bodies at 10° intervals from a comfortable posture and perform a food-intake test in the resulting posture. Based on observation of swallowing and feedback about posture from the participants, the angle at which each posture became dangerous was determined. As a result, abnormal posture thresholds were identified as leaning forward 30°, tilting left/right 30°, and chin tucking 20°. It was determined that the communication robot should not issue a warning in the event of repeated detection of abnormal posture. Moreover, it was considered that the warning alone is insufficient to prevent danger, and that the user and the people around them should be instructed on how to respond in the event of a warning. If the system is used in a care facility, the warning should be communicated to users and caregivers, facilitating cooperative accident prevention.

For the last two decades, the paradigm of scientific literacy has been rendered as "Engagement of the Public in Science and Technology." However, major scientific literacy surveys made so far have been unable to grasp this engagement to the fullest extent. This is due to the fact that it is impossible to evaluate how people of various characteristics engage in the particular group to which they belong (meso-level group) through a national level survey. On the other hand, it is not possible to analyze the public's literacy if we observe only the engagement of the people who participate in meso-level activities. In this paper, therefore, we propose a model for clarifying the structures among various factors that constitute scientific literacy and dividing the literacy into four types by clustering the responses in a national questionnaire survey. Introducing a case of people's interactions in a literacy improvement program, which is one of the abovementioned types, we will show a reality of the meso-level where various kinds of people iterate mutual interactions to form literacy as a group. The purpose of this research is to understand scientific literacy from the viewpoint of public engagement in society by integrating a macro-level quantitative survey with a meso-level case study.

Science communication is a type of communication that occurs between scientists/engineers and the general public. It has many variations ; however all of these are characterized by the fact that they take place outside of the normal social context and require an explicit form of participation if the communication is to occur. There are two categories of science communication : communication as an extension of an institutional conversation and communication as a conversation in more contingent circumstances. It is necessary to train people involved in science/engineering in both of these approaches. This paper demonstrates the latest attempt to provide science communication training at Tokyo Institute of Technology and discusses the significance of both approaches.

In this study 15 international undergraduates studying at Tokyo Tech watched a 20-minute DVD lecture, and they were instructed to write what they understood. Since the lecture contained visual information through an OHP, a handout was given students with visual information on the transparency. The information in their protocols was divided into four categories; visual, auditory, meta-linguistic, error and these units distribution were analyzed. The results showed that the students who understand well located different categories of units in time order by using three means' understanding the handout itself and writing information heard on the handout and organizing visual and auditory unites by meta-linguistic units.

This study reports the significance of note-reviewing for learners of Japanese in understanding a lecture. 54 learners of Japanese who were scheduled to enter universities participated in comprehension tests (immediately after watching the recorded lecture and one day after watching the recorded lecture ) of the contents of the lecture. As to 4 of them, all action delivered by their hands was recorded and categorized for quantitative comparison of their action among the students. The results show that the students who referred to their notes one day after the lecture scored better than the students who were in other group, and the student who reviewed her note more frequently during the lecture gained better score than the other students.

The purpose of this paper was to find conversational management strategies for overcoming asymmetries in dialogue through a study of conversations between native speakers (native situations) and between native speakers and learners of Japanese (contact situations). The episode boundary - a locus for creating a topic and negotiating introduction of a topic - was used to conduct quantitative analyses of native and contact situations from two different perspectives. The first analysis examined the frequency of positional types, while in correlation, the second approach examined the frequency of information units. The results indicate that in contact situations, participants tend to rely more heavily on responsive utterances and word repetition to show an anaphoric relationship. They also make more frequent use of topic markers, predicates and back channel cues when they start or terminate a topic.

Studies of communication srategies have shown that in contact situations when a learner is faced with comprehension problems, he/she might ask a native speaker to clarify the "trouble spot" of utterance (request for clarification: RC), or might avoid such a request (RC avoidance). These studies also have indicated that the intermediate-advanced learner seldom use request for clarification, and RC avoidance is an important strategy to continue the conversation between the learner and the native speaker of Japanese. However, there are few empirical studies of RC avoidance. Especially, how the use of RC avoidance affects the flow of conversation has been neglected. To fill this gap, this study presented the following research questions:(1)How do intermediate-advanced learners use RC and RC avoidance strategies?(2)Do Japanese conversation partners accept RC avoidance strategy? To answer these questions, a katei houmon project was assigned to 9 intermediate-advanced learners. Conversations in the katei houmon and follow-up interviews of both parties were analyzed. Results of these analyses showed that learners largely used RC avoidance, and Japanese partners of conversation regarded this strategy as inadequate communicative act. Based on these results, this study discusses the role of metalinguistic strategies (strategies for verbal monitoring of speech situation) as solving strategies of comprehension problems in learner/native speaker interaction. Instructions invented by the author on changes from RC avoidance into metalinguistic strategies were given to learners. After instructions, Japanese volunteers were invited to the classroom for a visitor session. Results of the analysis of this session showed that the total frequency of RC avoidance decreased, and the frequency of metalinguistic strategies increased. Also, Japanese conversation partners accepted the use of metalinguistic strategies, and they highly evaluated learners' discourse management.
