    The Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) structure which composed of metal nanostructures, an insulator layer, and a metal layer, has been attracting attention in recent years as a plasmonic coloring material capable of producing a wide range of colors in the visible light region. While the shapes and sizes of metal nanostructures had been much reported, there are less report about the variety of insulator materials. In this study, we tried to fabricate a dielectric layer by the LBL method in order to add new functions to the colorant and control the refractive index of the insulator layer. As the first material, we introduce Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the insulator layer of Au-polymer-Pt structures and examined the structural and color characteristics.

    Titanium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ti-HAp) powders were modified with CaMoO4 aqueous solution several times. The
    crystal structure, morphology, light absorption and specific surface area were almost identical after the modification. Then, the photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation was evaluated by the decomposition of gaseous 2-propanol (IPA). The photocatalytic activity of the Mo-modified Ti-HAp increased several times compared with the unmodified Ti-HAp. From ICP analysis, it is suggested that the photocatalytic activity increased with increasing the Mo concentration. The photoluminescence intensity decreased by Mo modification, and a strong signal of Mo(V) was appeared by UV illumination in electron spin resonance spectra of Mo-modified Ti-HAp. These results suggested that the photoinduced electrons can transfer to the MoOx cluster via Ti-hybridized band, which improves a carrier separation efficiency and leads higher photocatalytic activity.

    SnOx or (Mn,Sn)Ox were modified onto a rutile-type TiO2 powder. Then MnOx was modified onto the TiO2 or pure TiO2. The decomposition activity of 2-naphthol in water were evaluated for these samples at 50oC in dark. The modification of MnOx provided decomposition activity, however its degree are affected by the pre-modification by SnOx or (Mn,Sn)Ox. The decomposition activity decreased by repeated use, and it recovered by UV illumination or heat treatment at 300oC.

    We suggested and examined a "sensitized thermoelectric cell" that was based on a dye- sensitized solar cell. If “thermal” excited electrons in the semiconductor could cause an ion redox reaction as dyes in dye-sensitized solar cell, a novel thermoelectric generator that functions without a temperature difference.     Titanium plates was soaked into an alkalic solution for a certain period and numerous fiber-like projections were provided onto the surface. After subsequent firing and hydrophobic silane coating, Ti-based hydrophobic materials were prepared. Then solid-liquid bulk composite (SLBC) was prepared by impregnating a commercial hydrophobic oil into the material. The SLBC did not possess direct contact between the solid surface and liquid (water-glycerol mixture) droplet. Analysis by particle image velocimetry revealed that viscous flow resistance of the droplets depends on the practical internal fluidity during sliding on the SLBC.

    It has been widely known that colloidal particles and their arrayed structures play a critical role in various fields because of their versatility. Based on an expectation that quadrupole microstructures would display unique optical characteristics, we focused on the fabrication process for quadrupole structures composed of colloidal particles. The quadrupole structures consisted of polystyrene particles (PSt) with 1 μm diameter were formed by applying the approach integrated with a top-down method and a bottom-up method. Microhole arrays with two different shapes, circular holes and square holes, were fabricated on a Si substrate by using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching. These top-down processes were followed by a bottom-up process that Si substrate with the fabricated microhole arrays was withdrawn from PSt aqueous solution. With the guide of the microhole arrays, the PSt particles were forced to array the specific structures in the microholes by the capillary force and van der waals force acting on particles and substrate. These spontaneous driving forces, which are attributed to self-assembly phenomenon, have an essential role in the process of microstructure building. Consequently, quadrupole structures were fabricated; additionally, the distance between two neighboring particles consisting of quadrupole structures could be controlled by the sizes of microhole, and the obtained particle configurations could be taken off onto an adhesive tape.

    Metal nanostructures are critical to various academic and industrial fields interested in studying and exploiting their plasmonic characteristics. Here we discuss the preparation of gold nanocups (250 nm diameter) and their plasmonic properties. An initial gold structure is synthesized by deposition of a two-dimensional colloidal crystal (2DCC) followed by gold sputtering. The gold structure is then de-coupled from the 2DCC by etching in hydrofluoric acid, revealing a uniform array of gold nanopots that can be encapsulated in a flexible polymer resin or transferred onto a variety of substrates. The optical properties of gold nanopots are also discussed.

    Recently, a new bulk composite material prepared by impregnating low-surface-energy liquid into hydrophobic porous solid with interconnected pore structure was proposed. In the present study, we prepared the composites using a commercial porous glass and fluorinated or silicone oil, then investigated their static and dynamic hydrophobicity by changing oil viscosity and solid surface tension. Various hydrophobic glass plates (average pore size: ~1 mm) were prepared by coating hydrophobic silanes onto the porous glass with or without surface modification by colloidal silica (~100 nm). Porous glass/fluorinated oil bulk composites were prepared by subsequent impregnating two fluorinated oils with different viscosity and a similar surface energy. The composites provided a smaller sliding angle and a contact angle than those of the sample without impregnating lubricants. The composites possessed excellent sustainability on their small sliding angle under the exposure in turbulent water flow. The composite with high viscosity oil exhibited smaller sliding velocity for a water droplet than that with low viscosity oil. Particle image velocimetry revealed that the dominant sliding mode for water droplets on the composites was slipping. Detailed calculation suggested that viscous dissipation at the wetting ridge (oil meniscus at the three phase contact line) plays an important role on the moving behavior of water droplet on the composites. The motion of the droplet sandwiched between these composites, and the sliding behavior of water powder mixture on the composites will be also presented and discussed.

    We focus on the Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), that can measure the surface potential on nanostructure. Using the KPFM, we may observe the electric field enhancement directly and may compare them to the simulation results.
    In this study, incident-light wavelength dependence and structural dependence were examined on gold nanodisks (500 nm diameter and 30 nm thickness) prepared on Si substrate using electron beam lithography and lift-off method. Two types of array were prepared; one was “Regular array”, all distance between edge-to-edge of disks were 500 nm, and another was “Quadrupole array”, Quadrupole was comprised of four disks, the distance between edge-to-edge of disks were set to 50 nm in the x direction and y direction, and the distance between quadrupoles were set to 500nm in the x direction and y direction.
    For each arrays, reflection spectra of the portion containing the gold disk were measured by UV-Vis spectra connected to optical microscope for a range of a circle with a 3 m diameter and Si substrate was used for the reference. Also, KPFM measurements were carried out on each arrays at two conditions: unirradiated state and under monochromatic light irradiation.

    Wetting mode and shape changes of ultrasmall water droplets (80−100 nL) were observed during evaporation on superhydrophobic surfaces with different random roughness sizes. Observation of droplets from a top view revealed that the nanometer-coating transition was from Cassie's mode to air-containing Wenzel's mode. For a sunny-side-up like state, flat liquid film formation around the droplet edge was observed on the superhydrophobic surface after the wetting mode transition. This state seems to depend on the relation of surface energy values between the solid surface and liquid.

    In terms of applying nanostructures for optical nanodevices, planer and symmetric arrangement of “tips” on a particle provides a great advantage to controlling polarization property. However attempt to design and control these behaviors has not yet been reported that to the best of our knowledge. Here we report a novel process for preparing a structure using self-assembly technique, which satisfies such requirements and suitable for optical nano devices. We utilized hydrofluoric acid treatment on the self-assembled monolayer of SiO2 particles (original diameter was 190 nm) after thermal sintering process. The obtained structure had 6 tips arranged symmetrically in six directions, represent the hexagonal packing of the self-assembled two-dimensional colloidal crystal. The surface plasmon resonance of the tip structure was convinced by UV-Vis spectroscopy.

    The delamination behavior of a lactate/LDH composite prepared using the reconstruction method with a sodium lactate solution was investigated. The obtained composite showed that a strong peak around 2θ=11° that had been assigned as a basal reflection shifted slightly to lower angles: from 0.77 nm in starting LDH to 0.80 nm. This peak is assigned as a basal reflection of lactate-intercalated LDH (lactate/LDH). The interlayer distances of these diffractions were estimated about 0.32 nm, corresponding with the planate monomolecular state of lactate. Lactate contents of the obtained composites were 50–80 % against the anion exchange capacity of starting LDH, corresponding to increased concentrations of the reacted solutions. The XRD patterns of the gelated samples revealed no diffraction peak, but the XRD patterns of the casting sample after 80 °C drying exhibited diffraction peaks just as the as-received lactate/LDH composite did. The obtained lactate/LDH composite has new function of delamination and restacking. The obtained composite's delaminated size was 4–8 nm thick and 50–150 nm wide. Finally, the obtained lactate/LDH composite showed reversible delamination and smectite-like restacking functions.

    Cellulose derivatives are generally used as binders for ceramic process. However the interaction between inorganic materials and organics have not been evaluated concretely and quantitatively. In this research, the adhesion behaviour of the Methylcellulose (MC) on the Al2O3 surfaces was measured by the colloid probe method. The force curve measurement was carried out in 0.2 mass% MC aqueous solution. The retraction curves show some successive detachments of a MC molecule from the Al2O3 substrate. It was fitted with worm like chain model. The persistence length was estimated equal to about 0.15 nm for these curves. The MC aqueous solution containing 0.1 – 2.0 mass% polyethylenegricol (PEG) with average molecular weight of 200 was also evaluated. The force curve measured into the solution containing less than 1 mass% PEG also shows that the MC moleculers detached from the substrate. On the other hands, that measured into the solution containing 2.0 mass% PEG did not shows any detchments. To analyze this difference, the solutions were evaluated by 1H-NMR and DLS. From these results, it is regarded that the PEG moleculars are thought to absorb into MC molecular by a hydrophobic interaction. And the PEG affects to the comfomation of MC and the surplus PEG selectively adsorbs on the Al2O3 surface was considered.

    Three smooth silane coatings with different hydrophobicity (ODS, FAS3, and FAS17) were prepared on Si substrate. Impact and sliding behavior of water droplets on each surface were investigated. The removal of a water droplet becomes faster as the impact velocity become larger, however the effect of inertia energy saturated beyond the certain impact velocity. Comparing the ODS and FAS17 coatings, order of the removal time reversed depending on the impact velocity of the droplet.

    Recently, metal nanostructures such as meta-material attract many scientists because it enables us to develop optical technology. Simple and high-productive fabrication using self-assembly of dielectric particles is a promising approach for this objective. In this research field, the existence of defects in the nanostructures and the unavoidable influence of the dielectric material on optical characteristics are major problems. Here, we focus on and the difference of interfacial energy at dielectric/metal interface to solve these problems.

    In this study, the thermal shrinkage mechanism of Zr2SP2O12 was evaluated. And the thermal expansion performance of Zr2SP2O12 was enhanced. The shrinkage mechanism of Zr2SP2O12 was analyzed by crystal structure analysis using high temperature XRD. Thermal shrinkage according to the framework model was attributed to changes in the bond angle between ZrO6 and PO4 (or SO4), and thermal shrinkage according to the phase transition model was related to the distortion of the ZrO6 octahedron. These results suggested that element substitution at the Zr site is more effective than element substitution at the P(S) site. Based on the obtained knowledge, the several materials described by Zr2-xMxSP2O12 were synthesized. The maximum negative thermal expansion coefficient of the sample with the deformed MO6 octahedron was 1.5 times higher than that of the original Zr2SP2O12.

    In order to discover inorganic compounds with negative thermal expansion properties, we conducted material search by materials informatics and in-situ measurements using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We extracted 51 kinds of compounds and performed synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction measurement, and we were able to find the candidates in zeolite and the other compounds. In particular, by evaluating the thermal expansion properties of Zr2SP2O12 partially substituted Zr solid solution systems by in-situ measurement using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, the effect of element substitution on negative thermal expansion was clarified. In-situ measurement using synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction was shown to be extremely effective for the evaluation of thermal expansion properties because it is possible to collect highly accurate data in a short period of time.

    A sample in which La of La2Mo2O9 (LMO) was replaced with Ce (Ce2Mo3O13) exhibited a high antiviral activity against the novel coronavirus. A method for preparation of porous transparent thin films of LMO was developed. It was revealed that a composite oxide of Cu and Mo (CuMoO4) exhibited antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities simultaneously. We demonstrated that CeO2 doped with La ((Ce0.8La0.2)O2-d) exhibited antiviral activity. Both LaMnO3 and LaCoO3 were shown to be antibacterial and antiviral materials with low elution amounts. SnO2-MoO2 solid solution ((Sn0.5,Mo0.5)O2) possessed a high activity against viruses and fungi. Regression analysis using the obtained experimental results revealed that specific ions have a strong effect on bacteria and non-enveloped viruses, which is different from the effect on viruses with hydrophobic envelopes.

    Carbon-based membranes are in the limelight as novel and high-performance materials for various applications. This study focuses on the fabrication of carbon-based membranes via a hydrothermal method from aqueous glucose solutions. We have optimized the operating time and temperature for the hydrothermal treatment by evaluating the surface microstructure of the as-prepared membranes using various techniques. The elemental constitution of the membrane was investigated, and its bonding state using characterization techniques. The result of the gas transmission rate measurement indicates that the pore size of the obtained carbon membrane is around 0.3 nm. The obtaned membranes show appropriate pore sizes to act as molecular sieves for the purification of hydrogen gas.

    In this work, the relationship between the behavior of H2 microbubble generated by catalyst and the surface wettability of the catalyst was investigated. Platinum supported TiO2 thin films with various wettability were prepared by the modification the Pt-supported TiO2 with various alkylphosphors. The big H2 bubbles grew on the hydrophobic catalyst and cover the catalyst surface, therefore the ratio of H2 generation was low. On the contrary, H2 bubble adsorption hardly occurred on hydrophilic surface therefore the H2 generation rate was high. The surface wettability of the H2 generation catalyst is expected to be very important factor of the gas generation by catalyst.

    In this study, we investigated the possibility of ghelenite (CAS) crystals to apply to chemical and bio sensors. All the electroacoustic constants and their temperature dependence of the CAS crystals were determined by investigating each vibration mode. Both positive and negative temperature coefficients were obtained for piezoelectric constants. It is expected that the near-zero temperature coefficient of delay of bulk acoustic wave and surface acoustic wave (SAW) can be realized by optimizing the cutting directions in the CAS crystals. Some of the theoretical and experimental SAW characteristics were revealed. We also found that CAS possess cell proliferation ability and bone differentiation ability. With further characterization, it is expected to obtain the most suitable cutting directions and planes of the crystals for SAW application of the CAS crystal.

    Sintered bodies of Gd2O3 were prepared by uniaxial pressing of an oxide powder, followed by firing in a synthesized air atmosphere. Samples were initially hydrophilic after firing. However, their water contact angles increased during storage in ambient air. The surface hydrophobicity was non-existent after ozonation, but it recovered during two weeks of ambient air storage. It corresponded to the carbon concentration ratio on the surface. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed a difference in stretching vibrations of the OH group at around 3400 cm-1 and 3600 cm-1 between Gd2O3 and other oxides. Results suggest that this hydrophobicity originated from the adsorption of organic substances from ambient air onto the surface. Similar effect was confirmed also on ZnO nanorod samples. Based on these results, we have successfully prepared an oxide ceramics with self-hydrophobicity, antibacterial and antivirus properties.

    Ceramic particles having negative thermal expansion coefficient (Zr2WP2O12 and Zr2MoP2O12) were synthesized, and mixed with polyimide to prepare a polymer/ceramic composite materials having a thermal expansion coefficient of 20 ppm/K or less. First, a sintered body of Zr2MoP2O12 was prepared. And thermal and mechanical properties of Zr2MoP2O12 ceramics were estimated. Next, polymer/ceramic composites were prepared. The interface between the polymer and the ceramic particles was successfully adhered by optimizing the mixing process of the polymer precursor and ceramic particles and the polymerization process of the polymer. As a result, the thermal expansion of the polymer was effectively canceled out by the thermal shrinkage of the ceramics.

    Effects of water vapor treatment (WVT) on the oxide surface for the wettability conversion to hydrophobicity was investigated. Experimental results revealed that this treatment deteriorates bondings of oxide surface with forming adsorption sites such as OH groups for various hydrophobic agents with OH and COOH groups. The effectiveness of this treatment depends on both oxide materials and the surface modifiers. Comparative study between WVT and vacuum-UV illumination suggested that the WVT is more effective to rough oxide surface or oxide porous materials than vacuum-UV illumination. The hydrophobic porous glass prepared through this treatment became a superhydrophobic material and exhibited excellent static and dynamic hydrophobicity.

    The porous ceramics filter with avg. pore size of 60-800 nm and porosity of 30-45% were prepared. The chemicals having the affinity for the gas coated the pore walls of the obtained samples. The porous ceramics filter having pore size larger than mean free path of the gases didn' t show gas separation ability. That having pore size as same as mean free path show gas separation ability. The gas permeability of them is 100-1000 times greater than a typical polymer membrane. It is expected that a more effective as separation module is constructed.

    Effects of surface water film and hierarchical solid texture on the highly hydrophilic surface was investigated using various TiO2 samples and probe microscopy. When UV was irradiated onto the surface of polycrystalline rutile ceramics, the friction force first increased and then decreased. Once the water contact angle of the rutile surface reached the lower limit, the friction force increased gradually. Increased friction force was attributable to decomposition of the surface organic contaminant and subsequent friction force decrease and gradual increase are attributed to water adsorption. From the force curve measurement, the thickness of water layer was estimated as 2. 3 nm separation. Moreover, an excellent photoinduced hydrophilicizing rate and the sustainability of hydrophilicity were obtained from the brookite-heteropolyacid hybrid films. The mechanism of these properties was discussed from the viewpoint of hydrophilic points in the solid surface.

    A research team led by Associate Professor Toshihiro Isobe of the School of Materials and Chemical Technology and Associate Professor Manabu Fujii of the School of Environment and Society at the Institute of Science Tokyo has developed a system that can reduce perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compound (PFAS) levels below environmental standards. PFAS has been widely used in various applications, such as surfactants, semiconductor antireflectants, water repellents, and polymer processing aids. However, due to its resistance to decomposition in the natural environment, its high persistence, and concerns over its impact on human health and ecosystems, its production and use are increasingly regulated in Japan and abroad. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the concentrations of PFOS and PFOA among PFAS have exceeded the provisional target values at 111 locations in rivers and groundwater in 16 prefectures across Japan, with 74 of these cases being observed in groundwater.

    東京科学大学 物質理工学院 材料系の磯部敏宏准教授と環境・社会理工学院 土木・環境工学系の藤井学准教授らの研究チームは、パーフルオロアルキル化合物およびポリフルオロアルキル化合物(PFAS)を環境基準以下まで除去できるシステムの開発に成功しました。

    本システムは、新規のPFAS除去専用の多孔質カーボン膜を使用した点、蒸留法と膜分離法を組み合わせた膜蒸留法を採用した点、糖類という世界のあらゆる地域で入手しやすい原料を用いている点を特徴としています。本システムを用いて、疑似汚染水(PFOS濃度約500 ng/L)の浄化で得られた液体をクロマトグラフィー質量分析法で分析したところ、測定限界(約3 ng/L)以下まで浄化することに成功しました。これは、水質管理目標値(50 ng/L)やアメリカ環境基準(4 ng/L)を下回る値です。今後、実際の土壌中の汚染水の浄化に取り組むとともに、単位時間あたりの水処理量を増加させるための技術開発を行う予定です。現在のシステムは、擬似汚染水をヒーターで加熱しているのに加えて、真空ポンプを用いて水の蒸発を促進しています。将来的には太陽光を利用した加熱方式に切り替え、ヒーターや真空ポンプを使用しない完全な電力フリーのシステムへ展開を目指します。

    本研究成果は、東京工業大学 未来社会DESIGN機構「DLab Challenge 2022」(当時)として実施されたものであり、2025年1月13−16日開催の国際会議「The 23rd International Symposium on Eco‐materials Processing and Design」で招待講演として発表されました。

The method used by the scientists enables the production of a unique crystalline oxide containing zirconium, sulfur, and phosphorus, that exhibits two distinct mechanisms of negative thermal expansion. This is the first known material to show this property and its application may help avoid damage to composite materials, such as computer chip components, facing unexpected temperature changes.

    東京工業大学 物質理工学院 材料系の早川裕子大学院生(当時)、磯部敏宏准教授、中島章教授らの研究グループは、リン酸硫酸ジルコニウム(Zr2SP2O12)の単相合成に成功し、これが2種類の収縮メカニズムを併せ持つ新規な“温めると縮む”負熱膨張材料[用語1]であることを発見した。

    負熱膨張材料は、光通信や半導体製造装置の構造材など、精密な位置決めが求められる局面で熱膨張を抑制する効果がある。しかし従来の負熱膨張材料には、広い作業温度域と大きな負熱膨張性の両立が困難という問題があった。

    本研究で単相合成に成功したZr2SP2O12は、フレームワークメカニズムと相転移メカニズムという異なる収縮メカニズムを併せ持つ、世界初の材料であることが明らかになった。さらに熱処理による高機能化により、室温から500℃まで広い温度範囲で大きな負熱膨張性を示し、最大で-108 ppm/K(Zr2S0.9P2O12-δの120℃から180℃の体積膨張率)であることが確かめられた。

    本成果は、2020年12月18日にNature Publishing Group(NPG)発行の「NPG Asia Materials」に公開された。
