The synthesis of dinuclear model complexes is important for developing new cooperative catalytic systems. Therefore, a series of dinuclear copper complexes, [Cu 2 (OCOR) 2 ([18]ane‐N 6 )][PF 6 ] 2 (R = CF 3 , t Bu, Ph), featuring two copper metal centers encapsulated within a 1,4,7,10,13,16‐hexaazacyclooctadecane ( 1 ) macrocycle, were synthesized by reacting ligand 1 with the corresponding Cu(II) salts, Cu(OCOR) 2 . The molecular structures of these complexes were elucidated through experimental and theoretical methods. In addition, their potential application in the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 was preliminarily investigated.

    Abstract

The presence of atomic vacancies in a close‐packed material is believed to allow the migration of atoms adjacent to the vacancies, which induces dynamics of atoms. However, it is not known whether atoms in discrete molecules can undergo vacancy‐induced dynamics. We describe herein the generation of a close‐packed Pd 12 cluster complex [Pd 12 (C 7 H 7 ) 6 ][B(Ar F ) 4 ] n ( n  = 2, 3) with a Pd‐atom vacancy, and the observation of the diffusion of Pd atoms. Variable‐temperature NMR analysis, X‐ray structure analysis, and theoretical calculations indicate that an atomic vacancy is located at the surface sites of the Pd 12 core, and that it migrates rapidly on the NMR timescale. This means that all 11 palladium atoms at the surface undergo self‐diffusion with a low energy barrier. These results demonstrate, for the first time, that atomic diffusion occurs within a molecule through the vacancy mechanism.

    Abstract

Switching the location of metal atoms or ions in a molecule has been of great interest as a behavior of molecular machines. We describe herein that the reversible metal translocation can be coupled with the ligand‐binding/release of organometallic complexes. The two rhodium moieties sandwiched between arylpolyene ligands exhibit metal‐assembly and disassembly through reversible migration between the arene site and the olefin site, in response to the association and dissociation of additional ligands. This occurs either with bridging or even non‐bridging ligands, where the latter involves oxidative π‐addition of the unsaturated hydrocarbon binder to the metal moieties. The assembling‐ and disassembling states were characterized by NMR and X‐ray diffraction analysis.

    Abstract

A series of carbazole‐containing azaborines, furano‐fused 1–2F and 1–3F and thieno‐fused 1–2T and 1–3T, were efficiently synthesized from a common carbazole boronic acid ester in two steps. The structural effects of the fused ring moieties and the patterns of the ring fusion were clarified. According to X‐ray crystal structure analysis, the furano‐ and thieno‐fused carbazole azaborines had planar structures and generally formed 1D columns. UV–vis analysis revealed that their absorption properties were significantly affected by the fused ring moieties. In contrast, the fluorescence properties were affected by the ring fusion patterns. π‐Extended derivatives of 1–2T and 1–3T, benzothieno‐fused 1–2BT and 1–3BT and phenyl‐substituted 1–2T‐Ph2 and 1–3T‐Ph2 were synthesized, and the effects of π‐extension on physical properties were also investigated. All the π‐extended compounds showed red‐shifts in absorption and fluorescence spectra compared with the pristine 1–2T and 1–3T. The color of solid‐state emission of the synthesized azaborines was tuned from purple to green without electron‐rich or ‐deficient substituents. The structural effects on the electronic structures were also discussed based on theoretical calculations.

<title>Abstract</title>TheE/Zstereocontrol in a C=C bond is a fundamental issue in olefin synthesis. Although the thermodynamically more stableEgeometry is readily addressable by thermalZtoEgeometric isomerization through equilibrium, it has remained difficult to undergo thermal geometric isomerization to the reverseEtoZdirection in a selective manner, because it requires kinetic trapping ofZ-isomer with injection of chemical energy. Here we report that a dinuclear PdI−PdIcomplex mediates selective isomerization ofE-1,3-diene to itsZ-isomer without photoirradiation, where kinetic trapping is achieved through rational sequences of dinuclear elementary steps. The chemical energy required for theEtoZisomerization can be injected from an organic conjugate reaction through sharing of common Pd species.

Olefin isomerization is useful in controlling the E/Z configuration of olefinic substrates. In thermal reaction conditions, thermodynamically more stable E-olefins are usually formed. Herein, we developed the thermal E to Z isomerization of 1,3-diene using dicationic Pd(I)-Pd(I) dinuclear complexes.

The coordination behavior of heteroarenes to a palladium center has attracted much attention since their coordination has been thought to be involved in Pd-catalyzed transformations of heteroarenes. While the eta1-sigma-coordinating heteroarenes complexes have been proposed in the Pd-catalyzed processes, the coordination behavior of heteroarenes has been still elusive. We demonstrated that there is a sigma-pi continuum for eta1-indole-Pd complexes through successful isolation, systematic structure analysis and theoretical calculation analysis of a series of non-anchored indole-Pd(II) complexes.

The sandwich structures is one of the most important molecular designs for transition metal compounds. In this project, we aimed at developing the structural concept of sandwich compounds containing metal sheet clusters. We found that an eight-membered carbocylce, cyclooctatetraene, has the ability to stabilize the metal sheet sandwich clusters with cyclopentadienyl- or vinylarene counter-ligands. Furthermore, we also elucidated the coordination behavior of hetero-arenes to transition metals.

In this project, we focused on the contiguous π-coordination bonds which are formed at the molecular interface between the pπ-conjugated unsaturated hydrocarbons and the metal assemblies. We developed a synthetic method to construct the extended contiguous π-coordination bonds, that enabled construction of one-dimensional metal chain sandwich compounds having ten metal atoms. We also studied the two-dimensional contiguous multiple π-coordination bonds. Several aromatic ligands were successfully introduced on a trinuclear cluster face, and the ligand substitution mechanism was elucidated. Furthermore, we elucidated the bonding nature of the contiguous π-coordination bonds through experimental and theoretical analyses.
