    Abstract

As part of advancing oxygen–hydrogen combustion power generation technology, a study was carried out to evaluate the oxidation behavior of a novel developed Ni–Cr–W alloy as the structural material candidate. Tungsten is utilized in the alloy as a solid solution-strengthened element and as an α2-W precipitate former. The examination involved exposing the developed alloy and commercial alloys, Hastelloy X and Nimonic 263, to air and steam environments at 1273 K. The results show a different oxidation behavior of the developed alloy. Considering the air oxidation kinetics, the performance of the developed alloy was on par with that of Hastelloy X and superior to Nimonic 263. A single outer chromia scale was established with an intergranular oxide. Whereas steam exposure resulted in the formation of outer and inner chromia scales with a deeper intergranular oxide penetration. Thicker chromia formation with a lower mass gain indicates the evaporation of chromia under a steam atmosphere.

    Abstract

Silicon-containing steel forms an oxide layer within the scale during hot rolling. This layer comprising oxides such as Fe2SiO4 and FeO adversely affect the surface quality of steel owing to strong adhesion between Fe2SiO4 and the steel substrate. A method to melt this silicon-containing oxide layer through the oxidation reaction of iron plates by applying SiO2 powder to the surface is proposed. The aim of this study is to understand the reaction mechanism and identify the optimal conditions for this process. Application of SiO2 coating to the surface of an iron plate at 6.67 × 10–4 g·mm−2 and maintaining the plate at 1423 K, just below the eutectic temperature of Fe2SiO4–FeO system (1450 K), cause the surface oxide scale to melt when exposed to oxidation in an atmospheric environment. Notably, reducing the electric furnace temperature hinders the melting process, whereas excessive application of SiO2 hampers the formation of sufficient liquid phase. On the surface of the iron plate, primarily FeO and Fe2SiO4 are formed. Heat generation is mainly due to the formation of FeO, which leads to the rapid generation of Fe2SiO4. Eutectic reactions within SiO2–Fe2SiO4 or FeO–Fe2SiO4 systems drive the formation of the liquid phase. Once the liquid phase was established, rapid diffusion of iron ions within it resulted in rapid iron oxidation and additional heat generation. Ultimately, a liquid phase in equilibrium with FeO is formed across the entire surface of the iron plate.

    Abstract

High Cr ferritic steels have been developed for the large components of fossil power plants due to their excellent creep resistance, low thermal expansion, and good oxidation resistance. Development works to improve the operating temperature of these steels mainly focused on the high mechanical properties such as solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening. However, the knowledge of the correlation between Laves phase precipitation and oxidation behavior has not clarified yet on 9Cr ferritic steels. This research will be focused on the effect of precipitation of Laves phase on steam oxidation behavior of Fe-9Cr alloy at 923 K. Niobium was chosen as the third element to the Fe- 9Cr binary system. Steam oxidation test of Fe-9Cr (mass%) alloy and Fe-9Cr-2Nb (mass%) alloy were carried out at 923 K in Ar-15%H2O mixture for up to 172.8 ks. X-ray diffraction confirms the oxide mainly consist of wüstite on the Fe-9Cr in the initial stage while on Nb added samples magnetite was dominated. The results show that the Fe-9Cr- 2Nb alloy has a slower oxidation rate than the Fe-9Cr alloy after oxidized for 172.8 ks

    Abstract

Steam oxidation of a novel austenitic steel, of which composition is Fe-20Cr-30Ni-2Nb (at.%), has been conducted at 973 K to evaluate steam oxidation resistance based on detail analyses of scale morphology and scale growth. Two types of scale morphologies were observed in the solution treated sample, depending on the grain of the steel. Although thin duplex scale with the Cr-rich layer was formed in the early stage, most of the surface was covered with thick duplex scale which consists of magnetite as the outer scale and the mixture of Fe-Cr spinel and metallic Ni as the inner scale. On the other hand, surface morphology of the oxide scale was independent of grain of the steel and thick duplex scale as seen on the solution treated sample was formed on the pre-aged sample. Steam oxidation resistance of the steel is almost the same as that of commercial austenitic steels and it can be improved by the surface treatment such as shot peening. Based on the results, this steel has both enough creep rupture strength and good steam oxidation resistance for A-USC power plants.

Void formation in a duplex scale formed on Fe-5Cr alloy at 773 K has been elucidated by oxygen chemical potential distribution, the flux of oxide ion and its divergence. The calculation predicts that voids preferentially form at the interface between inner and outer scales in the low oxygen partial pressure in which the predominant defect of iron is interstitial ion. The flux of oxide ion changes discontinuously at this interface and the divergence of the flux gives voids. Calculated volume fraction of voids at this interface is in good agreement with that has been measured.

New apparatus for direct heating of alloy specimen in the gas stream has been developed in order to analyze not only reforming reaction but also carbon deposition on the alloy surface in low S/C environment. A foil of iron can be heated directly to 1073 K by the Joule heat from the specimen. Temperature of the foil can be kept at 1073 plus-minus 10 K by using AC power regulator connected with temperature controller. Temperature of the foil is not influenced by the thermal radiation from the oxide scale during the oxidation. One experiment has been carried out to check carbon deposition on the ferritic alloys at 1073 K in the CH4-H2O gas mixture. Oxidation and carbon deposition simultaneously occur on the alloy surface and no carbon deposition is observed in the chamber. Developed apparatus is suitable for investigation of carbon deposition and carburization of alloys in low S/C environment.

Voids are frequently generated and dispersed in oxide scales formed in high temperature oxidation of metals. The divergence of ionic flux may play an important role in the void formation in a growing scale. Kinetic equations were derived for describing chemical potential distribution, ionic fluxes and their divergence in the scale. The divergence was found to be the measure of void formation. Defect chemistry in scales is directly related to the sign of divergence and gives an indication of the void formation behavior. The quantitative estimation on the void formation was successfully applied to a growing magnetite scale in high temperature oxidation of iron at 823 K.

A quantitative elucidation of the void formation in a growing scale with Schottky defectsand p-type conduction during high temperature oxidation of metals. The evaluation of thedivergence of ionic fluxes indicates that(1) Voids form in the scale preferentially in the vicinity of the metal/scale interface,(2) The volume of voids increases in a parabolic manner,(3) The volume fraction of voids and the scale is independent of time. The comparison between the calculation and the experimentally observed scale microstructure ofNiO and CoO confirmed well the validity of the prediction.

Fe-Cr ferritic alloy is one of the candidates of interconnects. This alloy has a good oxidation resistance by formation of a protective Cr2O3 scale, which also protects from carburization. Using hydrocarbon gas as fuel, Cr concentration near the alloy surface may decrease by the formation of Cr carbides. The formation of the protective Cr2O3 scale is failed. It is expected that Nb addition to Fe- Cr alloy prevents from carburization because Nb has stronger affinity to carbon than Cr. Fe-16 mass%Cr and Fe-16 mass%Cr- 1.0 mass%Nb alloys were exposed to the atmosphere with S/C=1.1 at 1073 K up to 604.8 ks. In the case of Fe-16Cr alloy, carburization occurred extensively and internal Cr oxides and carbides were formed inside of the alloy. No Cr carbides were observed in all parts of the Nb added alloy. This indicates that carburization resistance is improved by the addition of Nb.

Estimation of void formation in oxide scale is important for predicting exfoliation of theoxide scale. Void formation in magnetite scale formed on iron at 823 K has been elucidated bychemical potential distribution, flux of oxide ion and its divergence. This calculation also estimates aeffective diffusion coefficient, which includes both lattice diffusion and grain boundary diffusion inmagnetite scale. The resulting effective diffusion coefficients give the quantitative elucidation of themorphology of the magnetite scale. The divergence of oxide ion explains well a position and anamount of void in magnetite scale.

This study focuses on the effects of alloying elements and strengthening phases on steam oxidation behavior of heat resistant steels at elevated temperatures. Niobium and tungsten were selected as alloying elements and steam oxidation tests were conducted by using model Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys with the alloying elements. There are two effects of alloying elements on steam oxidation behavior: the effect of solid solution and the effect of precipitation. As a results of two effects, alloying elements of niobium and tungsten contribute to improve steam oxidation resistance of the alloys.

This research focuses on effect of crystallographic orientation of the substrate on microstructure development of the oxide scale formed on heat resistant steels during steam oxidation. Fe-Cr-Ni alloys was used as a model system of austenitic steels for the various oxidation tests. Before steam oxidation, crystallographic orientation of the substrate was determined by electron backscatter diffraction. After steam oxidation, microstructure of the oxide scale formed on each crystal grain of the substrate was observed and categolozed based on crystallographic orientation. As a result, crystal grain of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, which has (111) plane on the surface, has good oxidation resistance due to the formation of protective oxide scale.

Silicon-free gas sealing technique was developed, employing liquid-phase-oxidation (LPO) joining of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and stainless alloy via ZrO2-dispersed Al interlayer. During the LPO-joining, the ZrO2/Al2O3 composite interlayer was formed between YSZ and Fe-Cr alloy. The composite interlayer had an excellent oxygen gas seal property, and high durability under thermal cycles. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the composite interlayer formed via NiO-dispersed Al interlayer had high durability under thermal cycles.

Kinetic microstructure change in the membrane of SrCo_<0.8>Fe_<0.2>O_<3-δ> under the oxygen chemical potential gradient at 1173 K was experimentally observed in this study. From the experimental results, it was found that microstructure of the membrane drastically changed by the oxygen permeation through the membrane. Although this study also tried to estimate the microstructure change by calculating the divergence of the ionic flux through the membrane, it was difficult to obtain the calculated results.

(1)Quantitative prediction of void formation in a growing scales in high temperature oxidation
Equations have been proposed for evaluation of chemical potential distribution, ionic fluxes and its divergence in a growing oxide scales. The divergence was proved to be the good measure for evaluating the void formation. The validity was experimentally confirmed in magnetite scales formed in high temperature oxidation of iron.
(2)High temperature oxidation of ferritiv Fe-Cr alloys for interconnects in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and electrical conductivity of the oxide scale.
Simulating the operation condition of SOFC, high temperature oxidation of Fe-16Cr alloys was conducted in the dual atmosphere, in which specimens were exposed air for the cathode and the mixture of H2O (97%) and H2 (3%) at 1073 K. The continuous protective Cr2O3 scales were formed on both sides. The growth rates were quite similar, indicating the major defect was interstitial ion of Cr in two cases.
The estimation of the oxygen potential distribution clarified that the oxygen potential is low almost the whole region in scales. This fact predicted the reason why the electrical conductivity of the Cr2O3 scales were high. Applied external currents retarded the growth rate of Cr203 on the cathode and enhanced it on the anode. The equations were proposed for evaluating the scale growth rate under the external current and the equations predicted the growth rate in the long term exposures.
(3)Control of microstructure development and design of the function of the scales.
The summary of this project is the following
(1)The quantitative prediction of microstructure development is possible with diffusion coefficients of constituent ions as a function of oxygen potential.
(2)For controlling microstructure, it is dispensable to design the diffusivity. The appropriate doping is an possibility for the design of the microstructure.
(3)The evaluation of chemical potential distribution and divergences of ionic fluxes is very powerful for controlling microstructures and designing the function of scales.
