    The thermal conductivities of molten KNO3, molten NaCl, and molten xNa2O-(100-x)SiO2 (x = 20, 33, and 40) (mol%) were measured over the temperature ranges between 623-723 K, 1173-1473 K, 1273-1573 K, 1173-1573 K and 1173-1573 K, respectively, by non-stationary hot-wire method to confirm that the thermal conductivities of the molten Na2O-SiO2 slags are not affected by the electrical leakage from the hot-wire to the melt and to elucidate the relationship between thermal conductivities of molten Na2O-SiO2 slags and silicate network structures. (i) The thermal conductivity measurements of molten KNO3 reveal that the measurements have been successfully made without the influence of electrical leakage from the bare metallic wire to the melt as the present data are in good agreement with the reported data measured by the non-stationary hot-wire method with ceramic-coated hot-wires. (ii) The thermal conductivity measurements of molten NaCl reveal that the present data at 1173 K and 1273 K agree well with the recommended data. However, the data at 1373 K and 1473 K are much smaller than the recommended data. The deviation is considered to be due to some electrical noise by which voltage changes V between the potential leads have been affected. (iii) The thermal conductivity measurements of molten 20Na2O-80SiO2, 33Na2O-67SiO2 and 40Na2O-60SiO2 (mol%) reveal that except for the measurements of molten 33Na2O-67SiO2 and molten 40Na2O-60SiO2 (mol%) at 1473 K and 1573 K, all other measurements have been successfully carried out and that the thermal resistivities of molten Na2O-SiO2 at liquidus temperatures LT increases with an increase in the number of non-bridging oxygens per tetrahedrally coordinated atoms (e.g. Si, Al), i.e., NBO/T, and have a linear relationship between LT and NBO/T.

    The compositional ranges of SFCA-I and other SFCA series and the phase equilibrium relationships were investigated in the iron-rich corner of the CaO-Fe2O3-Al2O3 system at 1240 °C in air using powder and single crystal XRD as well as EPMA. To obtain the desired composition, reagent-grade CaCO3, Fe2O3, and Al2O3 powders were weighed, mixed, and equilibrated at 1240oC in air. Each of the obtained samples was divided into two parts: one was pulverized into a powder and analyzed by XRD, and the other was subjected to microstructural observation and compositional analysis using EPMA. The crystalline structures of the SFCA series for some samples were analyzed by a single XRD. The results revealed that not only SFCA-I but also SFCA-II and SFCA have been found in the compositional area of this study; the Al/(Al+Ca+Fe) concentration ranges are 7.89–20.33 mol% for SFCA-I, 17.62–24.55 mol% for SFCA-II and 20.93–27.60 mol% or even higher for SFCA. The compositions of SFCA are on the line satisfying M14O20, while those of SFCA-I and SFCA-II deviate from the lines satisfying M20O28 and M17O24, respectively, and are closer to the line satisfying M14O20. Since the compositions were derived based on the assumption that all Fe irons are Fe3+, the apparent compositions of SFCA-I and SFCA-II deviate from M20O28 and M17O24, respectively, owing to the presence of trace amounts of Fe2+.

    Activity coefficients of FeO and FeO1.5 in CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 melts have been investigated from the perspective of the coordination structures of iron ions. The melts were placed in Pt containers at 1573 K and equilibrated at partial pressures of oxygen in the range between 10-9 and 10-4 atm, and the activities were derived from Fe concentrations in the Pt containers using the activity coefficient of Fe in Pt-Fe alloys reported as a function of molar fraction of Fe. The percentages of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in octahedral symmetry (Fe3+(oct)) and Fe3+ in tetrahedral symmetry (Fe3+(tetr)) were measured by Mössbauer spectroscopy. It has been found that both values of γFeO and γFeO1.5 monotonically increase with increasing PO2 and that the γFeO values are higher than the γFeO1.5 values suggesting that FeO is more readily released from the silicate network to precipitate FeOx-bearing compound from the slag than FeO1.5. It has also been found that the γFeO1.5 value increases with increasing the ratio of Fe3+(oct) pct./Fe3+(tetr) pct., which indicates that the values of γFeO1.5(oct) are higher than those of γFeO1.5(tetr). Accordingly, the hierarchy of the activity coefficients, i.e., γFeO > γFeO1.5(oct) > γFeO1.5(tetr) holds in the present system. The magnitude of effective ionic radii is in the hierarchy of Fe2+ > Fe3+(oct) > Fe3+(tetr), and thereby the bond strength between iron ion and oxide ion is in the hierarchy of Fe3+(tetr) > Fe3+(oct) > Fe2+. This suggests that Fe2+ are more loosely and Fe3+(tetr) are more rigidly bound to the silicate skeleton.

    Silicon-containing steel forms an oxide layer within the scale during hot rolling.
    This layer comprising oxides such as Fe2SiO4 and FeO adversely affect the surface
    quality of steel owing to strong adhesion between Fe2SiO4 and the steel substrate.
    A method to melt this silicon-containing oxide layer through the oxidation reac
    tion of iron plates by applying SiO2 powder to the surface is proposed. The aim of
    this study is to understand the reaction mechanism and identify the optimal condi
    tions for this process. Application of SiO2 coating to the surface of an iron plate
    at 6.67 × 10–4 g·mm−2 and maintaining the plate at 1423 K, just below the eutectic
    temperature of Fe2SiO4–FeO system (1450 K), cause the surface oxide scale to melt
    when exposed to oxidation in an atmospheric environment. Notably, reducing the
    electric furnace temperature hinders the melting process, whereas excessive applica
    tion of SiO2 hampers the formation of sufficient liquid phase. On the surface of the
    iron plate, primarily FeO and Fe2SiO4 are formed. Heat generation is mainly due to
    the formation of FeO, which leads to the rapid generation of Fe2SiO4. Eutectic reac
    tions within SiO2–Fe2SiO4 or FeO–Fe2SiO4 systems drive the formation of the liq
    uid phase. Once the liquid phase was established, rapid diffusion of iron ions within
    it resulted in rapid iron oxidation and additional heat generation. Ultimately, a liquid
    phase in equilibrium with FeO is formed across the entire surface of the iron plate.

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The thermal conductivity of a single-phase gehlenite (2CaO Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> SiO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>) sample was determined using thermal microscopy.     <jats:p>The temperature dependence of the microwave absorption behavior of BaTiO3 particles was investigated over various frequencies and temperatures of 25-1000 ∘C. First, using both the coaxial transmission line method and the cavity perturbation method by a network analyzer, the real and imaginary parts of the relative permittivity of BaTiO3 (εr′ and εr″, respectively) were measured, in order to improve the reliability of the data obtained at 2.45 GHz. The imaginary parts of the relative permittivity as measured by the two methods were explored by their heating behaviors. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the microwave absorption behavior of BaTiO3 particles was investigated for frequencies of 2.0-13.5 GHz and temperatures of 25-1000 ∘C using the coaxial transmission line method.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>In materials processing research using microwave heating, there have been several observations of various phenomena occurring known as microwave effects. One significant example of such a phenomenon is increased reaction kinetics. It is believed that there is a possibility that this might be caused by localized heating, were some reactants would attain a higher than apparent temperature. To examine whether such thermal gradients are indeed possible, mixed powders of two microwave non-absorbers, alumina and magnesia, were mixed with graphite, a known absorber, and heated in a microwave furnace. During microwave irradiation, the local temperatures of the respective sample constituents were measured using an in situ x-ray diffraction technique. In the case of the alumina and graphite sample, a temperature difference of around 100 °C could be observed.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>Silicon carbide is a key material in microwave (MW) processing and is used widely as a thermal insulator and catalytic agent. In this study, we experimentally investigated the temperature dependence of the MW-absorption properties of SiC particles at frequencies of 2.0–13.5 GHz. We heated SiC particles of different sizes using MW radiation. The heating behaviors of the particles were then compared with their MW-absorption properties. The heating behavior of the particles was dependent on their radii; this result was in keeping with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, the β-SiC particles exhibited anomalous behaviors when subjected to microwave heating at temperatures of 1100 °C and higher. These behaviors were attributable to the transformation of β-SiC into the α-phase. The underlying mechanism for this transformation is discussed on the basis of the results of X-ray diffraction analysis.</jats:p>

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:label /><jats:p>Recently, microwave energy is expected to be a heat source for high temperature process aiming at CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> reduction and energy conservation owing to the possibility of volumetric and selective heating. In order to examine the applicability of microwave heating to ironmaking, a basic research may be required with respect to the heating mechanism of raw and product materials of ironmaking as well as the carbothermic reduction mechanism of iron ore. To carry out this research, the authors have developed a single mode microwave furnace combined with X‐ray diffraction analysis. By using this, the authors have elucidated the effects of electric and magnetic fields of microwave on carbothermic reduction of magnetite powders, and have observed the selective heating of materials. It has been found that the Fe<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>–C mixed powders are more rapidly heated by the magnetic field than by the electric field just after the onset of heating. The rapid heating owing to the magnetic field is associated with the magnetic loss of Fe<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> powders. With respect to the magnetic field heating, once the temperature increases up to 800–1000°C, the temperature does not increase and the reduction hardly progresses, which may stem from the decrement in the microwave absorption of the sample. The main heat source is C at this stage. On the other hand, temperature monotonically increases up to around 1000°C and reaction gradually progresses for the electric field heating. It is considered that the main energy absorber is C at the beginning, and then is possibly changed to FeO at elevated temperatures.</jats:p></jats:sec>

    <jats:p>We have investigated the microwave heating characteristics of non-magnetic conductive multi-particle systems using spatially separated electric and magnetic fields (Emax and Hmax, respectively) to determine the effects of the multi-particle structure on microwave heating. Pure carbon, carbon black, and artificial graphite multi-particle systems exhibited peak microwave absorption at specific relative densities only under Hmax. These absorptions can be categorized into two types: one originates from coupling between metal spheres, while the other originates from a heterogeneous distribution of particles.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>We determine the mechanism of rapid and selective heating of nonmagnetic conductive particles by the electric and magnetic fields of microwaves. We investigated the dependencies of the heating behaviors of carbon powders on the radius and electrical conductivity for various relative densities. In these experiments, strong microwave absorption was observed in magnetic field at certain radii and ratios of the crystallite size to the radius. Mie theory for a single particle could account for the high heating rates generated by the microwave magnetic field in sintering experiments. In the dependence of the heating behavior on the relative density, that H field exhibited the maximum absorption at certain relative densities of the graphite powders. These surface plasmon-like modes were observed in graphite, but were not observed when an E field was applied. Multiparticle systems such as graphite powder were found to have significantly different heating behaviors from a single particle. Microwave heating of metal particles is expected to be affected by the structure and shape of the particles.</jats:p>

    <jats:p> In modelling mass and heat transfer steps in metallurgical processes, it is important to have knowledge of the physical properties of slags, the most important among these being the surface and interfacial tensions, thermal diffusivities, optical properties and viscosities. A critical review is presented of work reported in the past two decades relating to the following properties of slag systems: (i) surface/interfacial tensions and related interfacial phenomena; (ii) thermal diffusivities and thermal conductivities; (iii) velocities and coefficients of absorption of ultrasonic waves; (iv) optical properties. A perspective for further work is also provided. </jats:p>

    <jats:p>In the present work, thermal diffusivity measurements of three industrially significant alloys, viz. 90Ti.6Al.4V, stainless steel with 25Cr and 6Ni as well as plain carbon steel with 0.7 % carbon have been carried out as a function of temperature. The aim of this work is to study the effect of temperature and microstructure on the thermal diffusivities of these alloys. For the 90Ti.6Al.4V alloy, thermal diffusivity increases with temperature below 1225 K. Above this temperature, the values started decreasing probably due to the dissolution of Ti<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>Al intermediate phase in the matrix, which would result in an increase in the disorder of the structure. For 25Cr: 6Ni stainless steel, the thermal diffusivity is nearly constant up to about 700 K. Above this, there is an increase in the thermal diffusivities with temperature during the heating cycle, which was reproducible during thermal cycling. On the other hand, the slope of the curve increases above 950 K.</jats:p>
    <jats:p>In the case of the 0.7 % carbon steel, the thermal diffusivity shows a decreasing trend with temperature below the Curie point for the alloy, where the alloy consists of bcc + fcc phases. Above this point, only the fcc phase is prevalent and the thermal diffusivity was found to increase with temperature. Heat transfer is carried out by lattice vibration (phonons) as well as electrons. The contribution of electrons varies depending upon the type of alloy. In this study, the highest electron contribution was found in 0.7 % carbon steel, while the lowest was in stainless steel. The thermal conductivity values of these alloys are in good agreement with the calculated values using the model proposed by Mills.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>High temperature XRD and thermal diffusivity experiments were employed to investigate the degree of graphitisation in blast furnace coke. The experiments were conducted between room temperature and 1473 K. X‐ray diffraction studies were carried out in order to monitor the degree of graphitisation in the coke samples from the same campaign. In these cases, the degree of graphitisation was followed by the changes in the vertical dimension. The degree of graphitisation was found to be dependent on temperature. On the other hand, the graphitisation at each temperature was instantaneous, even at as low a temperature as 973 K and no dependency on time could be noticed. The thermal diffusivities of the coke samples taken from deeper level of the experimental blast furnace were measured using the laser‐flash technique. The results from these measurements showed that thermal diffusivities increased with the degree of graphitisation, which in turn, can be affected by the level in the blast furnace at which the coke sample was taken. The present results indicate that the degree of graphitisation as followed by X‐ray diffraction analysis as well as thermal diffusivities can be used to trace the thermal history of coke. DSC measurements show that the heat capacity of the coke increases with temperature towards the heat capacity of graphite, which could be due to the increasing the graphitisation degree of the coke.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>The effect of valence states of iron on the magnetic structure of as-quenched silicate glasses containing iron oxides has been investigated. The glasses, all having the same compositions, are melted in various oxygen pressures to control the ratios of Fe3+ ions to the total number of iron ions and quenched at the same speed, and the magnetic properties are measured. There are only a few reports which focus particularly on the relation between valence states of iron and the magnetic properties of the glasses. Here, the dc magnetizations and ac susceptibilities of the glasses are explained based upon a proposed magnetic structure model in which both microcrystalline clusters and free iron ions in the glass matrix bear magnetism. (In this article free iron ions mean iron ions which are distributed in the glass matrix.) The number density of microcrystalline clusters is highest in a sample of x=0.73 (x: the ratio of Fe3+ ions to the total number of iron ions) and it becomes smaller as the value of x becomes smaller and larger than 0.73. The average magnetic interaction among free iron ions in the glass matrix is stronger in the samples having larger values of x.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>Annealing of 20CaO⋅20SiO2⋅7Fe2O3⋅6FeO glasses at 973 K in vacuo produced clusters of a nonstoichiometric solid solution between Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3. The growth of clusters proceeded by diffusion of iron ions and the predominant diffusant was Fe3+ ions. The phase of the clusters approached γ-Fe2O3 as the annealing time increased. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that these clusters had magnetic moments and showed superparamagnetism above the blocking temperature. It has been shown that the dipole interaction between two nearest clusters is smaller by a factor of 1/7 than the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy. This indicates that the direction of the magnetic moment is predominantly determined by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy below the blocking temperature.</jats:p>
