    ABSTRACT

    Half-Heusler MNiSn (M=Ti, Zr, Hf) compounds are well-known, excellent n-type thermoelectric materials. The n-type Seebeck coefficients of ZrNiSn are reduced because of the precipitation of the metallic Heusler ZrNi2Sn phase. An excellent n-type Seebeck coefficient can be converted to p-type based on the vacancy site occupation by the solute Co atoms in the half-Heusler TiNiSn phase as well as ZrNiSn. The Heusler phase precipitates, including their precursor nano-structure in the half-Heusler matrix and the vacancy site occupation of the half-Heusler phase, are regarded as lattice defects based on the crystallographically and thermodynamically close relationship between half-Heusler and Heusler phases.

    ABSTRACT

    Single crystals of E21 (L12) Ni3AlC1-x were prepared by the unidirectional solidification using the optical floating zone melting method to determine their mechanical properties. Particularly the effects of interstitial carbon atoms on mechanical properties were evaluated by compression tests at room temperature. Operative slip system of E21 Ni3AlC is {111}<011> type which is the same as that of L12 Ni3Al. Strength of Ni3AlC single crystals increases with carbon concentration due to the solid solution effect, though the stress relief of yielding behavior is enhanced at the intermediate carbon content at around 3at%. A large gap appears in the carbon concentration dependence of critical resolved shear stress (as well as yield stress) at almost the same carbon content. This discontinuity in strengthening is attributed to the interaction between multiple solute carbon atoms and mobile dislocations.

    ABSTRACT

    The half-Heusler compound ZrNiSn has a quite small solubility for Ni from the stoichiometric composition towards the Ni-rich direction since Ni atoms are not supposed to occupy the vacancy-site. Nevertheless, Co and Ir atoms preferably occupy the vacancy-site of ZrNiSn, which is contrary to the prediction that they would substitute for Ni sites. This implies that the phase stability of the compound gradually changes toward that of the Heusler compound Zr(Ni,M)2Sn (M = Co, Ir). It has been confirmed that there exists a two-phase field between half-Heusler Zr(Ni,Cox)Sn and Heusler Zr(Ni,Co)2Sn. The n-type thermoelectric property of ZrNiSn can be converted to p-type by the addition of Co and Ir within the compositional range of the half-Heusler phase. The occupation of vacancy sites by Co and Ir atoms leads to a drastic reduction in the thermal conductivity owing to the enhancement of phonon scattering. With further Co addition, the Heusler phase Zr(Ni,Co)2Sn alloys show metallic behavior.

    Abstract

    Aiming to improve thermoelectric properties of half-Heusler compounds MNiSn (M = Ti, Zr, Hf), phase equilibria in the (Ti,M)NiSn systems have been investigated focusing on the half-Heusler phase separation between TiNiSn and ZrNiSn, TiNiSn and HfNiSn. Solubility limit of an element M in each half-Heusler phase was determined by XRD and EPMA. Nearly single phase alloys were fabricated by the directional solidification using optical floating zone melting method to evaluate intrinsic thermoelectric properties of the alloys. Lattice thermal conductivity can be reduced in (Ti,M)NiSn alloys by phonon scattering due to the solid solution effect of M site substitution. Moreover, electrical properties can be enhanced by the Ti addition in (Ti,Zr)NiSn alloys. Among present MNiSn alloys, (Ti0.15,Zr0.85)NiSn alloy has the highest power factor of 5.3 mWm-1K-2 at around 745 K.

    Abstract

    The evolution of microstructure in an Fe-0.67%C steel used for railway wheels has been investigated. To elucidate the mechanism of the ultrafine microstructure which is formed on the railway wheels tread surface, we have experimentally reproduced the same microstructure using uniaxial compressive deformation and subsequent annealing at 873 K. The deformation conditions required for ultrafine microstructure formation are the initial strain rate of 1 (=100) s-1 and total strain of 0.7. The mechanism of microstructural refinement is not the primary recrystallization but continuous recrystallization, i.e., the recovery process associated with the rearrangement of accumulated dislocations during deformation and annealing at temperatures between 773 K and 873 K. The recovery process never occurs at temperatures lower than 773 K. Primary recrystallization which involves the nucleation and growth of new ferrite grains takes place at temperatures higher than 873 K.

    Abstract

    Deformation behavior of (Nb)/α-Nb5Si3 two-phase alloys is examined by high temperature compression tests. The alloys exhibit brittle fracture behavior at temperatures up to 1473 K, while reasonable compressive deformability at 1673 K. Upon high temperature compression of the alloys, the flow stress gradually decreases after the peak stress due to the recrystallization/recovery in the (Nb) phase, as well as the increase in the density of mobile dislocations within the α-Nb5Si3 phase. Two types of slip systems that operate in α-Nb5Si3 have been identified as {011)<11-1] and {001)<100] in the present study.

    Mechanisms of microstructure evolution during annealing after cold working were studied in an Fe-15%Cr ferritic stainless steel, which was processed by bar rolling/swaging to various total strains ranging from 1.0 to 7.3 at ambient temperature. Two types of recrystallization behavior were observed depending on the cold strain. An ordinary primary (discontinuous) recrystallization developed in the samples processed to conventional strains of 1.0–2.0. On the other hand, rapid recovery at early annealing resulted in ultrafine-grained microstructures in the larger strained samples that continuously coarsened on further annealing. Such annealing behavior was considered as continuous recrystallization.

    ABSTRACT

    Targeting to develop E21 Co3AlC based heat resistant alloys, phase stability of E21 Co3AlC and (Co, Ni)3AlC has been investigated together with the magnetic properties of E21’ Co3AlC0.5 which is formed by the extra ordering of carbon atoms accompanying anti-phase boundary (APB). The correlation of ferromagnetism with APB in E21’ Co3AlC0.5 was evaluated using single crystals by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer. Anti-phase domain (APD) size affects the ferromagnetism: for instance, the saturation magnetization becomes larger as the APD size is smaller. Local atomic configuration at APB was clearly observed by HRTEM image.

    ABSTRACT

    Phase stability of E21 (Co, Ni)3AlC was investigated from the viewpoint of magnetic properties in the Co-Ni-Al-C quaternary system. Isotherms of the Co-Al-C and Ni-Al-C ternary systems at 1373 K were revised and evaluated by means of electron probe microanalysis. Magnetic properties measurement revealed that discontinuity appearing on the chemical concentration dependence of Curie temperature and saturation magnetization of E21 (Co,Ni)3AlC indicates the existence of two types of E21 phase in the Co-Ni-Al-C quaternary system.

    A series of environmentally friendly half-Heusler thermoelectric alloys containing multiscale microstructure (i.e., antisite point defects, the nanoscale and microscale spinodal-decomposed half-Heusler domains, the nanoscale full-Heusler nanoprecipitates of various sizes and morphologies) have ben successfully developed in this research. It was found that the high-temperature cyclic heat-treatment process and suitable amount of doping were two viable approaches to improve the overall thermoelectric performance of the alloys. The Nb-doped and cyclic-heat-treated half-Heusler alloy has shown the highest ZT to 0.91 at 752 K. The improvements are caused by the increment of power factor and the reduction of thermal conductivity. The former was due to the doping effects and the presence of the full-Heusler nanoprecipitates. The latter were closely associated with the diffuse interfacial structures among the multiscale microstructure upon the high-temperature cyclic heat-treatment process.

    Understanding of the solid solution strengthening mechanism due to interstitial elements was placed as a final goal. As the first step, E21 type intermetallic compound Ni3AlC which has an interstitial carbon atom in the octahedral interstice at the cell center was selected to investigate local elastic and plastic deformation behavior on atomistic scale using nano-indentation method while comparing with L12 type Ni3Al. So called pop-in event, discontinuous strain burst appearing on a load-penetrating depth curve corresponding to the onset of plastic deformation, was analyzed. Effect of C atoms on solid solution strengthening was found to be larger than that of Al atoms for off-stoichiometric composition on the Al-rich side. It was also indicated that C atoms might increase stress necessary to generate dislocations while they may less affect the mobility of dislocations.

    Thermoelectric power generation system, that enables to generate electrical power by the temperature difference based on unused thermal power resources, can contribute greatly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission and to the promotion of energy conservation. The objective of the present work is to fabricate thermoelectric materials that have high potential for the practical use, excellent cost performance and environment-friendly compositions. Interests of this work were focused on half-Heusler compounds to propose new and original approaches for improving thermoelectric properties by positively controlling several types of lattice defects, defects in ordered atomic arrangements (ordered structure). Consequently, the enhancement of thermoelectric performance of half-Heusler compound alloys was successfully achieved by controlling a good balance of electrical properties and thermal properties.

    Intermetallic compounds which have ordered crystal structures are used for applications such as strengthening phases of heat resistant alloys for jet engines and gas turbines, and thermoelectric materials which can directly convert the waste heat into electrical power. We focused on two pairs of intermetallic compounds which have falsely similar ordered structures and are separated as two different phases. Morphology of microstructure of Half-Heusler type TiNiSn, an excellent thermoelectric material, was analyzed especially focusing on interfaces formed by phase separation between Half-Heusler and Heusler pahse. Effects of resemblance and difference in ordered structures between L12 and E21 types on mechanical properties were examined for Ni3 Al with solute carbon atoms.

    We have focused on half-Heusler type compounds MNiSn (M=Ti, Zr, Hf) as environmental-friendly thermoelectric materials which allow us the materials design without depending on toxic elements. Thermoelectric properties of MNiSn were evaluated as their intrinsic physical properties, and the phase separation of TiNiSn from ZrNiSn and HfNiSn, i.e. between the same half-Heusler ordered structure, was determined with related phase equilibria. New fabrication processes were proposed based on the reaction between Sn (liquid) and TiNi (solid) as well as based on the reduction of SnO_2 and oxidization of Ti. Thermoelectric properties were evaluated for TiNiSn/Ti-oxides composite alloys.

    現在金属間化合物材料研究は1980年代のNi-Al系化合物材料研究が金属間化合物の構造用材料としての可能性・有用性を明確にした第1世代、そして1980年代後半からのTi-Al系を中心とした研究により化合物のみからなる実用材料の開発へとつながった第2世代を経て現在に至っている。現在そしてこれからの第3世代においては、複雑構造系を含むその他の金属間化合物や化合物を含む新たな複相合金、さらには機能性金属間化合物へと研究対象が拡大し、近い将来で実用化の可能性が高い化合物種も見出され始めている。さらに、格子欠陥の質的制御を中心とするナノオーダーでの構造・欠陥制御、さらには、「金属間化合物学」ともいうべき学理の構築に向かった方向性も見え始めている。本調査研究ではこうした金属間化合物研究の変遷や新しい展開について、国内では、日本金属学会の金属間化合物材料セッションを中心とした講演発表(2回/年)、さらに国際的には、MRS(Materials Research Society)で1984年にスタートした「High-Temperature Ordered Intermetallics Alloys」シリーズでの講演大会(1回/2年)における金属間化合物研究の2006年までの流れとこれからの新たな研究展開について整理するとともに、金属間化合物研究の新たな展開に向けた最新情報の共有化のため、これまでに国内200名を越える関連研究者のメーリングリスト(interm@)を整備し、世界的研究成果を含め瞬時の情報交換を可能とした。

    We have focused on half-Heusler MNiSn (M=Hf, Zr) as potential candidates for n-type thermoelectric materials used at high temperatures around 1000 K. It is possible to achieve large Seebeck coefficient and low electrical resistivity in single-phase alloys fabricated by directional solidification using the optical floating zone melting method (OFZ-DS). To further improve thermoelectric properties through lowering the lattice thermal conductivity, we proposed a new fabrication process combining OFZ-DS method with hot-pressing (HP) aiming to produce composite microstructures. It is advantageous to introduce interfaces for reducing the lattice thermal cnductivity by phonon scattering. Monolithic half-Heusler alloy powders were prepared from OFZ-DS ingots, and sintered by HP under various conditions. In HfNiSn/ZrNiSn composite, continuous solid solution (Hf, Zr) NiSn phase plays a role to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity by the solid solution effect. A composite of fine ZrO_2 particles homogeneously dispersed in the HfNiSn matrix was also prepared aiming to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity. We anticipated that electrical properties would be sacrificed by introduced interfaces, though, excellent power factors can be achieved. Thermal diffusivity can be apparently reduced by introducing interfaces while heat capacity is affected by interfaces and impurity phases formed during HP process. It is hard to suppress the formation of impurity oxide phases during HP process. Considering the oxide formation in the sintering process, HfNiSn/ZrNiSn composite was sintered under the Ar-4%H_2 deoxidizing atmosphere using compact powders without applying load. We found that deoxidizing atmosphere is quite effective to suppress the oxide formation and that thermal conductivity can be lowered by controlling density, i.e. porosity, of sintered specimens. It indicates that the optimization of density by controlling the applied load is effective to achieve the best balance of low thermal conductivity and excellent electrical properties, which leads us to maximize thermoelectric performance of half-Heusler based thermoelectric materials.

    Design of heat resisting materials has involved the microstructure control on two- or multi-phase alloys in which an intermetallic compound is the major constituents. Higher the operating temperature is desired, such compounds are favored as having a complex ordered crystal structure and therefore a high melting point. Since such a intermetallic compound is brittle in nature, strategy for the microstructure control has been to introduce some amount of ductile phase and to design the morphology of the mixture via for example an invariant reaction. However in the previous work on developing a new class of heat resisting materials which exhibit a superior performance than the commercial nickel-base superalloys, solidification defects such as macro-voids and micro-cracks have been frequently resulted during solidification. It should be caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between a brittle intermetallic metallic phase, which is most often appears as a primary solid phase from a liquid, and a ductile phase formed through an invariant reaction. It is necessary to avoid those defects by controlling the solidification process in order to obtain a sound ingot so that the evaluation of mechanical properties should be accurate to design a proper microstructure control.
    In the present work, the solidification process parameters have been investigated in alloys based on such refractory metal elements as Mo, Ta, and Nb in which their silicides such as MoSi_2 are the major constituent with some amount of ductile primary solid solution of each element with silicon. Comparison has been made with the processes of arc melting and optical floating zone (OFZ) methods. Also the design of a new class of iron-base alloys in which Fe_3AlC is a major constituent has been attempted. It has been shown that by proper choice of solidification rate upon OFZ method, a sound ingot can be fabricated with aligned two-phase mixture to exhibit an excellent combination of high temperature strength and some ductility

    Trade-off balancing between strength and toughness has been systematically investigated in alloys having brittle an intermetallic phase in a ductile matrix or having a ductile phase within the brittle intermetallic matrix. The systems investigated include Nb-Si base alloy, Fe-base ferritic alloys, an austenitic Fe-Mn-Al-C alloys, Cu-alloys and an Al-Fe alloy. The Nb-Si alloys consist of brittle Nb_5Si_3 and a ductile Nb solid solution phase in a mixed lamellar morphology, which is a candidate material for ultra-high temperature application such as components in gas-turbine engines. Both high temperature strength and room temperature toughness of the alloy depend on the morphology and spacings of the lamellar microstructure. A method for optimization of trade-off properties has been successfully suggested with a consideration on the toughening mechanism by the ductile phase in a brittle matrix.
    Similar investigation was made in the Fe-Cr base ferritic alloys in which the Laves phase is the strengthening agent, and also in Fe-Mn-Al-C in which the strengthening is achieved by the precipitation of E2_1-type intermetallic compound. In both cases change in morphology of the brittle phase in relation to the crystallographic orientation and misfit between two-phases control the strength and toughness, or ductility of the alloys.
    The present work successfully provides many valuable basic information on the microstructure-mechanical properties of advance metallic materials that helps in designing the alloys for various structural applications.

    高温構造用材料として開発が期待される金属間化合物合金は常温で極めて脆いため、これまでに常温延性改善を狙った多くの研究が行われてきた。延性化と高強度化は互いに相反する事象であり、高温強度を維持することが実用化に際して最終的な課題となる。そこで、延性を改善したCo基耐熱金属間化合物合金の高温強度特性を調べることを目的として本研究を行った。供試合金にはCo-Al-C3元系B2/E2_1/(CO)3相合金、および微量B添加Co-AI-Ni-Ti4元系B2/L1_2/(Co,Ni)3相合金を選んだ。B2相はCoAl、E2_1はCo_3AlC、Ll_2は(Co,Ni)_3(Al,Ti)、(Co)と(Co,Ni)は一次固溶体である。
    Co-Al-C合金では初晶グラファイトが大量に偏析するため、真空高周波溶解による大型インゴット作成は不可能であり、製造プロセスの改良が必要であることがわかった。そこで、室温引張試験と高温クリープ試験はCo-Al-Ni-Ti合金に対して行った。常温延性の改善は、B2とLl_2の2つの化合物に一次固溶体を加えた3相合金とすることで達成した。まず、平行部直径4mmの丸棒試験片を用いて引張試験を行い、室温での機械的性質を調べた。ひずみ速度3.3×10^<-3>S^<-1>で試験を行った結果、塑性ひずみ4.3%の優れた引張延性、0.2%耐力770MPa,引張強度1100MPaの高強度を示すことを明らかにした。高温引張クリープ試験は平行部直径6mmのJIS規格フルサイズ試験片を用いて一定応力で行った。850℃、50MPaでの試験結果は、破断時間47時間、最小クリープ速度4.8×10^<-7>s^<-1>である。応力を100Mpaに、または温度を900℃にすると、いずれの場合もクリープ強度は著しく低下する。破断ひずみは約40%と極めて延性的であり、これが低いクリープ抵抗の主因となる。この合金は、クリープ寿命の20%程度という短い遷移城を経て最小クリープ速度を示し、緩やかに加速に転じて破断に至る。破断後の組織観察の結果、一次固溶体相中にき裂の存在が確認され、加速域の発現はボイドを起点としたき裂の成長過程に起因すると考えられる。
