    Abstract

    In this study, the effects of plastic deformation and failure of the folded part on the folding behavior of non‐crosslinked ethylene propylene diene terpolymer/paraffin oil/silica gel composites were investigated. The folding behavior was evaluated by the residual fold angle of a folded specimen; a lower fold angle indicates an enhanced folding performance. The fold angle decreased with increasing oil and silica content and was correlated with the tensile yield strain, which is generally related to plastic deformation. Furthermore, the test speed dependence of the fold angle for each set of oil contents and test temperatures was investigated. The fold angle decreased with a decrease in the test speed and an increase in the test temperature. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the low‐fold angle, which indicates an improvement in the folding behavior, was caused by the destruction (voids, crazes, and cracks) of the folded part.

    A supramolecular cross-linked cross-linker, capable of introducing rotaxane cross-links to vinyl polymers, has been developed for the rational synthesis of polyrotaxane networks. The experimental results reveal that the combination of an oligocyclodextrin (OCD) and a terminal bulky group-tethering macromonomer (TBM) forms a polymer-network structure having polymerizable moieties through supramolecular cross-linking. Radical polymerization of a variety of typical vinyl monomers in the presence of the vinylic supramolecular cross-linker (VSC) afforded the corresponding vinyl polymers cross-linked through the rotaxane cross-links (RCP) as transparent stable films in high yields under both photoinitiated and thermal polymerization conditions. A poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-based hydrogel synthesized by using VSC, RCPDMAAm , displayed a unique mechanical property. The small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) results, indicating patterns characteristic of a polyrotaxane network, clearly suggested the presence and role of the rotaxane cross-links. The confirmation of the introduction of rotaxane-cross-links into vinyl polymers strongly reveals the significant usefulness of VSC.

    The characteristics of the alkaline degradation process and the mechanical properties of polyester blends of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBSU) were studied. The blends were immiscible in the amorphous states from the DSC measurement results. The elongation of PLLA/PBSU blends were large (several hundred percent), however the elongation of PLLA was small (several percent). In regard to the weight decrease of alkaline hydrolysis tests, PLLA had the fastest rate of decrease and PBSU had the slowest rate of decrease. The degradation rate of PLLA/PBSU 75/25 blends and 50/50 blends were close to PLLA. A weight decrease was observed in the PLLA/PBSU 25/75 blends. The degradation rate can be adjusted by blending the PLLA in the PBSU. The results from the measurements of DSC and WAXD showed that the increase of degree of crystallinity was very limited. The characteristic globular cracks of the child (fractal) forms were observed in degraded pure PLLA by means of a scanning electron micrograph. The surfaces with the general unevenness were seen in degraded pure PBSU. The special structures (which were mixed hierarchically) were seen in the blends. Although PLLA/PBSU blends were immiscible, the blends had the structures which were hierarchical. It may contribute to the mechanical properties.

    The polymer composite material filled with piezoelectric ceramic particles and electroconductive particles is a damping material, which has a new damping mechanism. In addition to this new mechanism, this composite has conventional damping properties due to the viscoelasticity of polymer and the interparticle-friction of fillers. The new damping mechanism, called "the piezoelectric damping effect", is due to piezoelectricity and consumptive circuits in the composite material. Mechanical vibration energy, transmitted to piezoelectric particles, is converted into electric energy by piezoelectric effect is converted into Joule′s heat through the conduction paths between electroconductive particles. In this study the relationship between the damping performance and the elastic modulus of this composite was discussed. The piezoelectric effect of this damper relates to the effectiency of vibration-transmission in the composite material. The elastic modulus and the damping performance of the composite material were measured as a function of piezoelectric particle sizes. As a result of increasing the elastic modulus, total damping performances are decreased, but the contribution of the piezoelectric damping effect is increased and the other viscoelastic and interparticle-friction effects are decreased. These phenomena can be explained qualitatively with the dispersion model in two-phase composite materials.

    The dispersion state of carbon black (CB) in polymer blends which are incompatible with each other and temperature dependences of electrical conductivity of these composities were studied. The electrical conductivity of composities was measured as a function of temperature in heating and cooling cycles. It was found that CB distributes unevenly in each component of the polymer blend. This uneven distribution of fillers in polymer blend matrices has much effect on the electrical conductivity of composites and their temperature dependences. The extent of PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient of resistivity) of composites depends on the blend ratio of filler rich phase and dispersion state of CB in this phase. The electrical conductivity of CB filled crystalline polymer blends composed of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) shows a prominent PTC below melting temperature and rapid decrease (NTC) above it at particular blend ratio of HDPE. However, the electrical conductivity of CB filled crystalline and amorphous polymer blend, i.e., HDPE/PMMA (poly (methyl methacrylate)) does not show such a large temperature dependences of conductivity at same blend ratio of HDPE. This prominent temperature dependence of conductivity is due to the changes of inter-conductive domain-gap of filler rich phase (HDPE), accompained with thermal expansion of another crystalline polymer, PP.

    The electrical properties and the dispersion of particles of carbon black (CB) -filled polymeric composites can be affected by the chemical modification of the matrix polymer chain-ends. The present paper discusses this effect. We measured the electrical conductivity of composites as a function of carbon volume fraction and temperature, and observed the dispersion state of CB in matrix polymer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chain-ends modified polystyrene (MPS) filled with CB has a larger percolation threshold than the non-modified. This is because the strong interaction between the cationic chain-ends and anionic CB surface contributes to regular distribution of CB particles in MPS matrix. Therefore, the improvement in the dispersion of particles depends on the amounts of oxygen-containing groups on the CB surface. Thus a composite material having well-dispersed state is obtainable by means of the chemical modification of the matrix polymer chain-ends and the oxidation treatment of the filler. In polyethylene (PE) / polystyrene (PS) blends, CB particles were located in the PE phase. When MPS are used, if filler content is less than the threshold, CB particless are located in the MPS phase; above this threshold CB particles can also exist in the PE phase.

    The electrical properties of electrically conductive particle-filled polymeric composites are affected by the dispersion of the particles which are included. Here the interaction between polymer and carbon black (CB) is studied, the mechanism of improved dispersion of particles by the chemical modification of chain-ends is clarified. Percolation threshold (V*f) was measured for polystyrene (PS) and modified polystyrene (MPS) filled with CB at room temperature. At a given CB content, the electrical conductivity of both composites were measured as a function of pressing time (tp) at temperature higher than Tg. At a characteristic time (t*p), a percolation-like transition was observed due to the network formation of CB particles which facilitates electrical conduction. The MPS has larger V*f and t*p values than the non-modified one. This is because the strong interaction between the chain-ends of MPS and CB surface contributes to regular dispersion of CB particles and the stabilization of this dispersion at a temperature higher than Tg in MPS matrix. The digital image analysis of SEM photograph made clear the differences of dispersion states of CB in PS and MPS matrix; the analysis was in agreement with this effect.

    Novel ion-conductive elastomer blends containing polyether-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) were prepared by the radical polymerization of oligo[(ethylene oxide)-co-(propylene oxide)] methacrylate (M(EO/PO)) monomer with LiClO4 in NBR. Obtained samples showed micro- (or nano-) scale Sea-Island phase separation, which was revealed from the TEM observation in case of NBR18/PM(EO/PO)mono-LiClO4 50/50 wt% blend, and the DC conductivity under dry N2 (σdry) was approximately 10–8 S cm–1 at 25 °C. The difference in the conductivity of blend samples between dry and wet conditions was very small, whereas the conductivity of PM(EO/PO)-LiClO4 without NBR under wet condition (σwet) was 10-times higher than σdry. Moreover, the σdry of NBR43 blend sample (NBR43/electrolyte = 30/70 wt%) was higher than that of the neat electrolyte. The complex impedance measurement revealed that AC ionic conductivity of the NBR43 blend sample was 6.7 × 10–6 S cm–1 at 25 °C and the value was approximately 6-times higher than that of the neat electrolyte. This may be caused by accelerated ion-conduction between the electrolyte islands or on the NBR/electrolyte interface where the resistance is very small because of the electrical interactions between Li ions (or <nobr>Li+−polyether</nobr> complex domains) and nitrile groups of NBR.

    Abstract

    We investigated the sound absorption characteristics of an organic hybrid material comprised of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) as the matrix polymer and N,N′‐dicyclohexyl‐2‐benzothiazolyl sulfenamide (DBS) as the second component of an organic low‐molecular‐weight compound. We found specific crystallites, obtained by annealing, that generated new absorption for a low‐frequency sound in a CPE/DBS blend. We observed two sound absorption peaks, around 300 and 1000 Hz, in the annealed CPE/DBS (50 : 50 w/w) blends, whereas those peaks were not observed in the untreated sample. There were two kinds of crystals with different melting points in the annealed samples. It was confirmed that the crystals with the lower melting point brought about sound absorption at a low frequency. The crystals that had the lower melting point were smaller and/or more disordered than the crystals that had the higher melting point. We calculated the fraction of these two types of crystals from differential scanning calorimetry and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. The annealing or reannealing temperature specified the fraction of the crystal with the lower melting point, and the obtained crystal fraction characterized sound absorption frequency. Therefore, it is possible to control the sound absorption frequency of an organic hybrid by heat treatment such as annealing. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2006

    Enzymatic hydrolysis of poly(L-lactic acid)(PLLA), poly(butylene succinate)(PBSU) and their blends was performed in the phosphate buffered solution of pH7.4 at 37°C. Cholesterol esterase was used as the enzyme. The blend films before and after hydrolysis were characterized. From the results of Wide Angle Xray Deffraction measurement for the quench films before hydrolysis, PLLA was amorphous and PBSU was crystallized. The spherulite of PLLA was observed in the blend films during annealing at 130°C. The degradation rate of the blend films decreased with increasing the mixing ratio of PLLA and with increasing the crystallinity of PLLA. From the results of FT-IR measurement, the dominant component at the surface of PLLA/PBSU=50/50 blend film before hydrolysis was PBSU, but after hydrolysis, the dominant component at the surface was PLLA. In this work, we found that the degradation rate of the blend films depends on not only the mixing ratio of PLLA but also the crystallinity of PLLA.

    Damping behavior of organic hybrid damping materials prepared from a mixture of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) and N, N′-dicyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolylsulfenamide (DBS) was investigated by means of dynamic mechanical analysis. DBS content dependence on the damping behavior can be divided into two characteristic regions. At contents lower than 66wt%, the maximum value of loss modulus and loss tangent increase linearly with DBS content; however, at contents higher than that value, they become nonlinear. Temperature dependence of loss tangent shows that there are two loss peaks for the highly filled mixtures. The first peak is broad with tan δ of about 5∼10, while the second peak is rather sharp at high temperature with tan δ>10. By differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the crystallization peak was observed only for the highly filled mixture. The finding that incorporation of a small amount of CPE into DBS matrix can improve the DBS crystallinity is very important for the development of novel hybrid materials.

    Different samples of poly (L-lactic acid), which were prepared from the melt via quenching (at -50°C) followed by annealing and via slow cooling, were analyzed by WAXS and DSC measurement. The results suggested that the amorphous regions of quenched film are different from the amorphous regions of the quenched film annealed at 60°C, while other quenched samples annealed at 80-120°C seemed to have disordered crystallites. Hydrolysis degradation tests, which were carried out on those samples in 1N NaOH solution at room temperature, revealed that the samples treated at 100°C were degraded more rapidly than the quenched samples. This suggests that annealed samples contain easily hydrolyzable sites, such as voids and crystal defects. It was also observed that the hydrolyzed samples have three different patterns of degradations: 1) decrease of thickness with a regular wearing, 2) the edge of film shows complicated surface boundary and 3) a cracked film surface of small pieces. The photographs of sample surfaces were also taken and analyzed by an image analysis technique. From these observations, degradation process can be analyzed by means of Fractal dimensions and the Fractal model (modified random von Koch curve).

    The present paper examined the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) property of carbon black (CB) filled isotatic polypropylene which was crystallized isothermally at 150°C, the fusion property of the matrix polymeric crystals and the distribution of CB particles in the matrix during spherulitic growing, then found out their relation. Two melting peaks were observed in thermograms of differential scanning calorimetry of these samples. The area of the lower melting peak decreased with increasing of crystallization time, outstripped area of higher melting peak at 25h. PTC peak temperature from lower melting peak shifted to higher melting peak at 25h, PTC intensity increased till 25h, suddenly decreased at 25h, again mildly increased after 25h. It was found from optical micrographs that 25h was just right a critical time, at which the spherulitics first contacted each other, CB particles crowded together around the spherulitic porphyries.

    It has been well-known that the electrical resistivity of conductive particles filled insulating crystalline polymer composites shows a large positive temperature coefficient (PTC) below the melting temperature of the matrix polymers and a rapid decrease above it. This PTC property is decided by the degree of dispersion of fillers in matrix and the thermal expansion of polymers. Here the change of PTC property, microstructure of matrix polymers and the dispersion state of fillers in heat-treatment process were investigated, and the relationship among them was discoursed. The PTC intensity (logarithmic ratio of electrical conductivity at room and at melting temperature) increases with annealing temperature up to 120°C. In the range of annealing temperature 120-155°C, the electrical conductivity at room temperature and the PTC peak temperature increases, but the PTC intensity decreases. The former is due to the increase in the matrix polymer crystallinity accompanied with a transformation of the smectic phase into the monoclinic phase, the latter is due to the agglomeration of fillers in the partially melting process at annealing temperature more than 120°C. This agglomeration of fillers was confirmed through the measurement of the surface areas of fillers in polymers, and of time dependence of quenched samples at various temperature, and scanning electron microscopy observation.
