Fluorescent liquid crystals (LCs) have attracted considerable interest owing to their unique combination of fluidity, anisotropy, and intrinsic emission. However, most reported fluorescent LCs exhibit high phase transition temperatures and/or smectic phases, limiting their practical applications. To address this, we designed and synthesized a series of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD)-based fluorescent nematic liquid crystals incorporating donor (D) or acceptor (A) groups to form D–A–D or D–A–A structures. Most of the synthesized derivatives exhibited supercooled nematic phases at room temperature. They composed various functional groups, such as secondary alkylamine, branched alkyl chain, and trifluoroacetyl groups, which are rarely used in calamitic nematic LCs. Notably, dimethylamine- and carbonyl-substituted derivatives exhibited relatively high fluorescence quantum yields (Φfl) in both solid and mesophase states, demonstrating their potential as efficient fluorescent materials. Our findings underscore the versatility of BTD-based mesogenic skeletons for designing room-temperature fluorescent nematic LCs with various functional groups. These materials offer promising opportunities for next-generation display technologies, optical sensors, and photonic applications.

    Abstract

Solvatochromic fluorophores, widely employed in various analytical applications such as environmentally responsive dyes, typically feature a donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) structure. Most recently, Klymchenko and we independently designed D–π–A fluorophores with a strong acceptor, trifluoroacetyl group, to achieve strong fluorescent solvatochromism and reported its application to membrane analysis (Klymchenko et al. Anal. Chem. 2024, 96, 13242) and molecular thermometer (Konishi et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2025, 147, 9953), respectively. However, these reports have only considered a few π‐electron donors including dialkylamines. There is not enough scope for solvatochromic fluorophores that take advantage of the properties of the trifluoroacetyl group. In this study, we systematically investigated the fluorescent properties of the π‐conjugated aromatic skeleton of D‐π‐A with trifluoroacetyl groups. The relationship between dye structure and properties such as absorption, fluorescence, and quantum yield were clarified, and a molecular design strategy for fluorophores that exhibit the desired properties was established. Moreover, fluorescence quenching can occur depending on solvent selection or molecular structure. Moreover, this study provides insightful analysis of trifluoroacetyl‐based fluorophores design strategy, emphasizing their prospective as strong but underused acceptor units for next fluorophore development.

    Abstract

Recently, we developed a new aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) luminogen (AIEgen), bridged stilbene, by incorporating a propylene group into the C=C bond of the luminescent phenyl stilbene. This bridged structure, featuring a seven‐membered ring, induces a significant conformational change, causing the C=C bond to twist in the excited state, thereby enhancing non‐radiative decay in solution. In this study, we introduced bridged structures with alkylene groups of varying lengths into (E,E)‐1,4‐diphenyl‐1,3‐butadiene (DPB). The variation in the bridged structures of the synthesized DPB derivatives notably influenced the environmental sensitivity of fluorescence. Whereas the compound with two six‐membered ring structures exhibited emission in solution and in the polycrystalline state, derivatives with a seven‐membered ring exhibited AIE properties. Specifically, BDPB[7,7], featuring two seven‐membered ring structures, demonstrated AIE characteristics with solid‐state luminescence originating from J‐aggregates. However, the fluorescence quantum yield was low in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) dispersion films, where molecular motion was restricted. These findings open new possibilities for designing unique AIEgens that remain nonluminescent even in highly viscous or confined environments, such as PMMA films.

In recent years, π-conjugated liquid crystalline molecules with optoelectronic functionalities have garnered considerable attention, and integrating these molecules into side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) holds potential for developing devices that are operational near room temperature. However, it is difficult to design SCLCPs with excellent processability because liquid crystalline mesogens are rigid rods, have low solubility in organic solvents, and have a high isotropization temperature. Recently, we developed near-room-temperature π-conjugated nematic liquid crystals based on “bridged stilbene”. In this work, we synthesized a polyacrylate SCLCP incorporating a bridged stilbene that exhibited a nematic phase near room temperature and could maintain liquid crystallinity for more than three months. We conducted a thorough phase structure analysis and evaluated the optical properties. The birefringence values of the resulting polymers were higher than those of the corresponding monomers because of the enhanced order parameters due to the polymer effect. In addition, the synthesized polymers inherited mesogen-derived AIE properties, with high quantum yields (Φfl = 0.14–0.35) in the solid state. It is noteworthy that the maximum fluorescence wavelength exhibited a redshift of greater than 27 nm as a consequence of film formation. Thus, several unique characteristics of the SCLCPs are unattainable with small molecular systems.

    Abstract

High‐resolution spatio‐temporal monitoring of the cell membrane lipid order provides visual insights into the complex and sophisticated systems that control cellular physiological functions. Solvatochromic fluorescent probes are highly promising noninvasive visualization tools for identifying the ordering of the microenvironment of plasma membrane microdomains. However, conventional probes, although capable of structural analysis, lack the necessary long‐term photostability required for live imaging at the cellular level. Here, an ultra‐high‐light‐resistant solvatochromic fluorescence probe, 2‐N,N‐diethylamino‐7‐(4‐methoxycarbonylphenyl)‐9,9‐dimethylfluorene (FπCM) is reported, which enables live lipid order imaging of cell division. This probe and its derivatives exhibit sufficient fluorescence wavelengths, brightness, polarity responsiveness, low phototoxicity, and remarkable photostability under physiological conditions compared to conventional solvatochromic probes. Therefore, these probes have the potential to overcome the limitations of fluorescence microscopy, particularly those associated with photobleaching. FπCM probes can serve as valuable tools for elucidating mechanisms of cellular processes at the bio‐membrane level.

    Abstract

Supramolecular liquid crystals (SLCs) are attractive materials for fabricating devices with new optoelectronic functions. Conventional SLCs are made from hydrogen‐bonded mesogens. However, these mesogens suffer from high melting points, and the types of formable aggregates are limited owing to the directionality of the hydrogen bonding. Therefore, to fabricate non‐hydrogen‐bonded SLCs, we hypothesized that the introduction of tertiary amide groups into calamitic molecules would be advantageous because they have an L‐shaped structure with N‐ or C‐alkyl side chains not aligned along the long axis and the flexibility to undergo cis–trans isomerization. In this study, we developed a novel non‐hydrogen‐bonded SLC by assembling an L‐shaped dimer composed of calamitic molecules (phenyltolanes) with tertiary amides at their ends. These molecules exhibited a smectic B phase. The phase transition temperature of the SLCs from crystal to liquid crystal phase was low despite the long π‐conjugated core. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and variable‐temperature Fourier‐transform infrared measurements revealed dimer formation by weak intermolecular interactions, that is, the molecular recognition of L‐shaped molecules, and mobility of the alkyl groups attached to amide driven by cis–trans isomerization in the liquid crystal phase. Thus, cis–trans isomerization of tertiary amides contributed enormously to the formation and lower clearing points of this SLC. The developed method can be used not only to develop non‐hydrogen‐bonded SLCs but also to develop novel soft matter with controlled properties by incorporating the SLCs, as the aggregates can be controlled to impart desired functionalities.

Synthesis of anisole novolacs from methoxybenzyl alcohols is described. Sulfuric acid-catalyzed self-condensation of 2- or 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol (hydroxymethylanisole) in acetic acid afforded the corresponding anisole novolacs in good yields. The resulting novolacs were well-soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone but insoluble in methanol. The structures of the polymers were determined by 1H & 13C NMR and IR analyses. From the 13C NMR analysis, these novolacs were clarified to have a linear structure. From the GPC analysis (by the polystyrene standard), the number average molecular weight was found to be about 2000. Under these polymerization conditions, only were obtained oligomers having such the molecuar weigt. This formaldehyde-free synthetic method is expecyed to give novolacs with controlled structures.

Synthesis and thermal properties of new novolacs from hindered hydroquinone derivatives are described. Sulfuric acid-catalyzed condensation of 3, 5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole (1) or 2, 5-di-tertbutylhydroquinone (2) with paraaldehyde (acetaldehyde) (3) or paraformaldehyde (formaldehyde) (4) in 2-ethoxyethanol afforded the corresponding linear novolac (5) - (8) in high yields. The resulting novolacs were well-soluble in the common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone. The structures of 5-8 were determined by 1H & 13C NMR and IR analyses. From TGA analyses, hydroquinoneacetaldehyde novolac (5 and 7) were less heat-stable than hydroquinone-formaldehyde novolac (6 or 8). These novolacs had easier processability than that of phenol or cresol novolac and will be expected for reactive polymers, cured resins and resist materials.

In this study, We synthesized secondary N-alkyl- and tertiary N,N-dialkyl-pyrene-1-carboxamide derivatives, and investigated their photoluminescent properties. This study shows that N-alkyl carboxamide group makes pyrene-chromophore highly emissive. N,N-dialkyl carboxamide group, however, makes dye weak but it emit in viscous media. This result indicate that N,N-dialkyl-pyrene-1-carboxamide derivatives have the potential of application environmentally-responsive fluorescent materials.

Benzothiazole is an attractive compound in the fields of photonic devices, chemical biology, and so on. We attended to photophysical characters of benzothiazoles connected various donor parts with thiophene chain, because these compounds seem realize green emission devices with addition donor parts. In order to systematically study the effect of donating group attached to a benzo[d]thiazole with the quantum yield and the stoke shift, we established the efficient route for synthesis of the conjugated linear dye, benzo[d]thiazole derivatives with terminal donor–acceptor substitution, and all of the synthesized compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and UV–Vis spectroscopy. We also investigated benzothiazoles containing extended linker of thiophene to find correlation between the conjugation length and the optical property.

We have studied lasing behavior of a simple distributed feedback laser of pyrene-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs). The pyrene derivative has high quantum yield and aligns its transition dipole moment perpendicular to the local director of a host CLC. Laser oscillation occurs at short wavelength band edge of CLC contrary to that in conventional dyes aligning parallel to the director. We found that the pyrene-doped CLC gives the laser threshold as low as 43 nJ/pulse, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of conventional laser dyes such as 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostryl)-4H-pyran (DCM).

We describe synthesis of a novel liquid crystal based on 1,4-bis(biphenyl-4-yl)buta-1,3-dyine (BDPDA-OCx). This molecule exhibited a thermotropic liquid crystal phase. In particular, BDPDA-OC6 showed a sybotactic nematic phase. Little is known about this phase in the low molecular weight liquid crystal compound. We consider this characteristic phase transition behavior is derived from the effect of long mesogen moiety.

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) dyes, which quench fluorescence in solution and emit strongly in the solid state, have been used in a variety of applications for biomolecular imaging and solid-state luminescent materials. We focused on stilbenes, which are known to undergo large structural changes around their double bonds after irradiation. We designed an aggregation-induced luminescent dye by means of "bridged stilbene" with a alkylene chain around the double bond. We developed the bridged stilbenes BPST[7] and DPB[7], which demonstrate excellent AIE behavior.

We designed new bistolane nematic liquidc crystals with alkylsulfanyl groups for extraordinary birefringence materials. A symmetric derivative contains short terminal methylsulfanyl groups (SCH3) on both ends, while two asymmetric derivatives contain a methylsulfanyl group on one end, as well as a highly polarizable cyano (CN) or isothiocyanate (NCS) group on the other end. These materials exhibited a well-defined enantiotropic nematic phase, as well as an extremely high birefringence (Δn > 0.6). Most notably, the NCS derivative achieves an extremely high value of 0.77 at 550 nm.

As a result, we developed high performance optical polymers such as 9,9-diarylfluorene- and 9,9'-spirobifluorene-containing polythioethers and polysulfones with high refractive index and low birefringence. In addition, we developed a recyclable cross-linked polymer based on a combination of dynamic covalent chemistry of aromatic disulfide bond and rotaxane chemistry, in which both the trunk polymer and the cross-linking agent change their positions without any apparent change in their chemical structures during cross-linking reaction.
