    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>All-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries exhibit high energy densities, operate safely, and suppress polysulfide shuttling. However, their electrochemical performance is restricted by the insulating nature of sulfur and Li<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>S, and by severe cathode-related volumetric changes during cycling. Here, we prepare a Li<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>S-based cathode composite with high mixed-conductivity and stability, by infiltrating a Li<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>S–LiI active material solution into a mesoporous carbon replica with ~10-nm-sized pores, followed by mixing with a liquid-phase-synthesized Li<jats:sub>6</jats:sub>PS<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>Br solid electrolyte and vapour-grown carbon fibres. Benefiting from a mechanically reinforced, three-dimensional ion/electron-conducting structure, the cathode exhibits high discharge capacity (1009 mAh g<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup>, 20 cycles, 298 K, 0.05 C) and high reversible capacity (650 mAh g<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup>, 100 cycles, 298 K, 0.1 C). These findings underscore the feasibility of developing high-performance all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries by designing three-dimensional mixed-conducting mechanically robust cathodes.</jats:p>

    Abstract

    Enhancing the understanding of fast lithium intercalation on cathode surfaces modified by oxides is crucial for the development of electrode materials that offer high‐power and long‐life operation. Herein, lithium transfer is elucidated by directly observing the structural changes within the cathode, through the interface, and into the electrolyte using in situ neutron reflectometry (NR). Two films are studied—a Li2ZrO3‐modified and an unmodified LiCoO2 film—and it is found that the modified film exhibits a superior rate capability. In situ NR studies indicate that the surface modification facilitates the formation of a dense cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI), primarily composed of inorganic species. In contrast, the unmodified surface is covered by a relatively sparse and electrolyte‐impregnated CEI. These structural observations suggest that lithium desolvation during intercalation primarily occurs on the CEI and LiCoO2 surfaces for the modified and unmodified films, respectively. Fast desolvation of lithium on the CEI may contribute to the superior rate capability of the surface‐modified cathodes. This suggests a mechanism of fast intercalation achieved by surface modification of low ionically conductive oxides. Simultaneous chemical composition and morphological information is a powerful way to elucidate the dynamics at cathode/liquid electrolyte interfaces suitable for high‐power operation.

    Neutron reflectometry (NR) is a powerful tool for providing insight into the evolution of interfacial structures, for example via operando measurements for electrode–electrolyte interfaces, with a spatial resolution of nanometres. The time resolution of NR, which ranges from seconds to minutes depending on the reflection intensity, unfortunately remains low, particularly for small samples made of state-of-the-art materials even with the latest neutron reflectometers. To overcome this problem, a large-area focusing supermirror manufactured with ultra-precision machining has been employed to enhance the neutron flux at the sample, and a gain of approximately 100% in the neutron flux was achieved. Using this mirror, a reflectivity measurement was performed on a thin cathode film on an SrTiO3 substrate in contact with an electrolyte with a small area of 15 × 15 mm. The reflectivity data obtained with the focusing mirror were consistent with those without the mirror, but the acquisition time was shortened to half that of the original, which is an important milestone for rapid measurements with a limited reciprocal space. Furthermore, a method for further upgrades that will reveal the structural evolution with a wide reciprocal space is proposed, by applying this mirror for multi-incident-angle neutron reflectometry.

    Batteries are a key technology in today's society. Since the "lithium-ion" configuration has been widely accepted, significant efforts have been devoted to attain high energy and power densities to produce an excellent energy storage system without any safety issue. To improve the reliability and power characteristics of batteries, deep insights into the reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface are necessary. It is rather difficult to detect the reaction at the electrochemical interface using polycrystalline electrode materials, which are used for practical battery systems. The model systems with epitaxial thin-film electrodes might be suitable for understanding these reactions, because the film electrodes provide flat surface, which makes easier to detect the reactions by in situ scattering techniques. The in situ techniques for directly observing surface structural changes of the electrodes have been developed for surface X-ray scattering and neutron reflectivity techniques. These techniques are reviewed and future studies on the interfacial reaction in batteries will be discussed.

    本領域研究では、世界最高水準の電子状態計算、モデル実験、ナノ計測を三本柱とし、機能材料、エネルギー材料、構造材料分野で高い研究業績を上げている研究者らと一体になって、機能コアの概念に立脚した新しい材料科学の学理を構築する。総括班ではこの領域の目的を達成するため、以下のような活動を行った。
    1) 2021年9月28日および2022年3月30日に総括班会議を開催し、本領域の研究進捗状況について議論した。また、今後の領域運営や計画班運営について、各計画班研究代表者に助言・指導を与えた。さらに、2021年9月28日に領域全体会議をオンライン開催し、領域内研究者との意見交換を通じて今後の研究連携を検討した。2)連携研究および設備有効利用の促進のため設置している、計算解析センター、ナノ計測センター、モデル試料センターについて運営状況の確認や今後の方針策定を行った。3)若手育成支援としてオンラインでの若手の会(若手コラボツアー)を計3回実施した。4)成果公表活動として、2022年3月30日に2021年度公開シンポジウムをオンライン開催した。また国内学会での公募シンポジウムを1件、国際会議でのシンポジウムを1件主催し、機能コアのコンセプトを国内外に広く公表・周知した。5)アウトリーチ活動として、名古屋大学で開催された「テクノフェア名大」で本領域のオンラインブース展示を行い、一般も含む参加者に広く本領域のコンセプトを周知した。またSNS等を活用した本領域の情報発信にも取り組んだ。

    All-solid-state photoionic devices have been constructed by thin-film synthesis methods, aiming to operate energy storage by photo/chemical energy conversion (charging) and energy release by chemical/electrical energy conversion (discharging) in a single device. Photoelectrochemical measurements and interfacial structure analysis have successfully demonstrated that lithium desertion (charge) from a n-type semiconductor cathode proceed under photo irradiation. Furthermore, the photocharging and discharging reactions have been highly reversible without the decomposition reaction caused by photoirradiation. Our findings have clarified the possibility of the photoionics phenomena for energy storage devices by making an all-solid-state device using a solid electrolyte.

    Hydride ion conducting La2LiHO3 thin films were synthesized on the single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition, and their crystallographic orientations were revealed. The La2LiHO3 thin film showed a conductivity, which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the polycrystalline powders. The anion defects introduced during the synthesis process could contribute to the high electric conduction in the prepared film. The 100 oriented BaTiO3-xHx films as an electrode material were fabricated by the sputtering methods. It is necessary to establish synthesis and/or treatment conditions for the synthesis of high-quality oxyhydride thin films that show pure hydride ion conductivity. On the other hand, synthesis and evaluation for the electrode material of BaTiO3-xHx implied the possibility of the novel devices consisting of hydride ion conducting thin films.

    Several new ionic conductors were created through a systematic search that integrates computational chemistry and materials science. A new material with the highest conductivity was discovered using the Li10GeP2S12 structure (28 mS cm-1). The machine learning method significantly improved the efficiency of material discovery. A foundation for the use of materials informatics was also established. In the hydride system, systematic synthesis of pseudo two- and three-component systems created a novel material with high conductivity (0.05 mS cm-1 at room temperature), indicating the feasibility of room temperature hydride devices. In the systematic synthesis of nano-stacked electrodes, the feasibility of material design by controlling the nano-interface was demonstrated.

    Photoelectrochemical lithium (de)intercalation has been demonstrated structural and electrochemical analyses using epitaxial film model electrodes. Energy band diagrams at the TiO2/organic electrolyte, MoO3/organic electrolyte, and TiO2/Li3PO4 solid electrolyte were investigated, which clarified that the photoelectrochemical activity of lithium ions are related to flat band potential and intercalation potentials. At the TiO2/Li3PO4 interface, the irradiated TiO2 electrode exhibited a higher reversible capacity than that the unirradiated electrode and showed superior cycle stability. Further understanding of photoelectrochemical lithium intercalation at the solid/solid interfaces, photoelectrochemical storage devices are expected to be realized.

    New material search and hydride ion conduction mechanism analysis were carried out to develop the hydride conduction mechanism and the novel energy devices. The hydride ion conduction in the K2NiF4 type structure, which is the basic structure of the hydride ion conducting oxy-hydrides, proceeds mainly in the perovskite layer and hydride ion conduction in the perovskite layer is relatively faster than that of hydride ion in the rock salt layer. The K2NiF4 type La-Sr-Li-H-O based material was synthesized by sintering in a container sealed in a hydrogen atmosphere. Since larger quantities of samples can be obtained at one, the process was found to be suitable for the device verification has been established.

    We have studied aiming to clarify the correlation between lattice size change and activation energy of charge transfer process by hybridizing expandable piezoelectric element by voltage application with lithium battery material epitaxial thin film.
    111 - oriented LiMn2O4 epitaxial thin film was fabricated on LiNbO3(LNO) substrate and mica substrates and piezoelectric properties by sol-gel method. The electrochemical characteristics of the obtained thin film were evaluated, and it was confirmed that charge - discharge performance was confirmed with the film on LNO substrate. The activation energy of the charge transfer resistance decreased by applying voltage to the piezoelectric substrate. These results suggeststhat the activation energy is lowered due to the distortion generated in the film with the expansion of the substrate.

    Novel ion conducting materials that can be applied to energy devices were developed. In addition to classical material search, new direction for material exploration using theoretical science and information science was examined. Hydride ion conductors, which are new ionic conduction species, were developed and demonstrated applicability as an electrolyte for all-solid-state energy devices. For the nano interfacial analysis using the quantum beam, the clear relationship between the nanometer-scale electrochemical interfacial structure and the device performance was revealed. The solid electrolytes in which lithium ions and oxide ions diffuse were developed by exploration based on the known crystal structure. Furthermore, a novel material search method for ion conductors with new composition and new structure using the information science was conducted. The problems to solved and possibility of the novel method were proposed.

    The electrochemical interfaces between intercalation electrodes and organic electrolytes were investigated by in-situ neutron reflectometry using epitaxial-film model electrodes. The depth profile of the scattering length density as determined by neutron reflectometry clarifies the ionic distribution at the interface owing to high sensitivity of lithium ions. A phase transition occurs in the surface 20 nm region of the film electrodes from the top surface, and the reconstructed phase determines electrochemical properties during the subsequent cycles. Using neutron reflectometry, X-ray diffractometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination, it is found that the surface structures and electrochemical properties can be controlled by surface modification. Direct observation and control of the interfacial structure is an effective way of developing intercalation materials with high capacity, high power, and high stability.

    A feasibility of an energy conversion device using hydride conductors was investigated. K2NiF4 type structured hydride ion conductors showed pure ionic conductive behavior, indicating that the hydride conductor could be used as a solid-electrolyte for the devices. Symmetric cell using Pd electrodes and the solid-electrolyte successfully demonstrated a reaction from H2 to H- ion. This result revealed the possibility of developing an energy conversion hydride device. Further development of the solid hydride conductive materials and appropriate electrode materials could contribute to the establishment of a novel device with hydride redox reactions.

Surface modification by Li3 PO4 solid electrolyte improved the stability of the electrode structure upon battery operations. Mechanical and technical development of surface structures is of considerable importance for improving the power characteristics and cyclability of new-generation batteries.

    Control and analysis techniques for electrochemical interfaces have been developed to design all solid state energy storage devices. Structure and electrochemical properties of the interface depend on the difference in their electrochemical potentials. Furthermore, we developed a new super ionic conductor, Li_10GeP_2S_12, with the highest lithium ion conductivity.

    Interfacial reactions of lithium batteries have been determined by in situ X-ray surface scattering measurements using epitaxial thin-films electrodes. The atomic arrangements of electrode surfaces change on being soaked in the electrolyte, and are subsequently reconstructed when a voltage is applied in the first charge process. Mechanical and technical development of surface structures is of considerable importance for improving the power characteristics and cyclability of new-generation batteries.
