    Dry reforming of methane (DRM) for syngas production has gained much attention because of its significant potential in greenhouse gas reduction and economic efficiency over steam reforming. The practical application of DRM has been hindered by problems of coking in cold spots, coking-induced blockage and pressure loss in the catalyst packed beds. The previous works developed a packed bed type microreactor with a blow-through channel, namely a catalytic wall-plate microreactor (CWPMR) to solve those problems. However, it did not outperform the conventional tubular packed bed reactor. Objective of this study is to process-intensify DRM by structuring CWPMR. A void space and micro-baffle were formed in the packed layer and in the blow-through channel, respectively. This study proposed the micro-structure to enhance convective heat and mass transfer, and resultant reaction efficiency. Particle-resolved CFD simulations verified the favorable effects of the micro- structure on flow distribution in CWPMR. Reaction experiments showed that the micro-structured CWPMR significantly outperformed the conventional reactor and reduced carbon deposition with the identical catalyst loading.

    Cross-flow ultrafiltration of macromolecular solutions in a module with micro-channels is expected to have the advantages of fast diffusion from the membrane surface and a high ratio of membrane surface area to feed liquid volume. In addition, high shear stress will reduce the degree of fouling of the membrane. Though such kinds of ultrafiltration modules are expected to be used for separation and refining and as membrane reactors in micro-chemical processes, there have been few papers on their performance. In the previous studies of the authors [1], [2], micro-channel filtration modules were fabricated and the experimental investigation on the relationships between permeate fluxes and operational conditions of transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate was made. The modules consisted of feed liquid side and permeate liquid side channels. Membrane was put between two channels and experiments of cross flow ultrafiltration were carried out. PolyVinylPyrrolidone (PVP) aqueous solution was used as a model solute of macromolecules such as enzymes. Changes in permeate flux with time were obtained under various conditions. Based on the results, the relation between the permeate fluxes and the operational conditions including the length of the channel, were discussed. On the basis of the experimental results, a model on the transport phenomena considering the effect of the concentration polarization was proposed. By means of the model, the permeate fluxes under various conditions were estimated. From the model, the effects of the axial convection and the osmotic pressure difference were expected to be important factors in the permeation process. As increase of the concentration of the feed liquid in the axial direction, permeate flux decreased in the downstream region of the channel because of the effect of the concentration polarization and high osmotic pressure. Average permeate fluxes over the whole module were, therefore, not in proportion to the length of the channel. Considering the results, it is indispensable to reduce the concentration at the surface of the membrane in order to make the average permeate flux higher in the downstream. Though it might be effective to put a mixing device e.g. a static mixer, in the micro-channel, pressure loss through the device would become large. An alternative idea is to reverse the direction of the permeation. In the previous module, the membrane was put on the bottom side of the feed liquid channel. As a result, the feed liquid close to the membrane was concentrated extremely in the downstream of the micro-channel. In this study, a new module with a staggered arrangement of the membrane on the top and the bottom sides of the feed liquid channel was fabricated. The permeation direction changes at the axial position in the channel, where the side of the membrane changes from the bottom to the top, and vice versa. As results of the experiment, the permeate flux of the new module was larger than that of the previous one with the membrane set only on the bottom side. It appears that the staggered arrangement is effective to cancel the concentration polarization.

    Ultrafiltration of macromolecular solutions has increasingly become an important separation process. In such processes, the critical problem is the decline of permeate flux caused by membrane fouling. In this study, a simple model which combines pore blockage and compressible cake layer is proposed to describe the behavior of filtrate flux during filtration. In the model, it is considered that membrane fouling by pore blockage mechanism and the development of compressible cake layer occur simultaneously. The pore blockage model and compressive yield stress model are modified and coupled to give the numerical prediction of the permeate flux. In addition, the steady state permeate flux, which is difficult to obtain in ultrafiltration processes due to long time operation requirement, can be estimated directly from the model. The cross-flow ultrafiltration system (MWCO 5000) of the protein solution was used for the validation of the model. In experiments, the trans-membrane pressures and the feed flow rates were varied while the temperature and the protein concentration were kept at constant. The comparison results indicate that entire permeation process is well presented by the proposed combined model. It also suggested that the importance factor affect the steady state permeate flux is the feed flow rate.

    Cross-flow ultrafiltration of macromolecular solutions in a module withmicrochannels is expected to have the advantages of fast diffusion from the membranesurface and a high ratio of membrane surface area to feed liquid volume. Cross-flowultrafiltration modules with microchannels are expected to be used for separation andrefining and as membrane reactors in microchemical processes. Though these modules canbe applied as a separator connected with a micro-channel reactor or a membrane reactor,there have been few papers on their performance. The purpose of this study was to clarifythe relationship between operational conditions and performance of cross-flowultrafiltration devices with microchannels. In this study, Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP)aqueous solution was used as a model solute of macromolecules such as enzymes.Cross-flow ultrafiltration experiments were carried out under constant pressure conditions,varying other operational conditions. The permeate flux decreased in the beginning of eachexperiment. After enough time passed, the permeate flux reached a constant value. Theperformance of the module was discussed based on the constant values of the flux. It wasobserved that the permeate flux increased with increasing transmembrane pressure (TMP)and feed flow rate, and decreased with an increase of feed liquid concentration. A model ofthe transport phenomena in the feed liquid side channel and the permeation through themembrane was developed based on the concentration and velocity distributions in the feedside channel. The experimental results were compared with those based on the model andthe performance of the ultrafiltration module is discussed.

    The effects of unsteady agitation, which was carried out by reversing the direction of revolution periodically, on mixing of water in an agitated vessel with aeration were investigated. The change in concentration of tracer CO2 gas absorbed by water with time at twenty local positions and power consumption were measured in order to discuss the effects from the view points of mass transfer, power consumption and mixedness on the basis of information entropy. The effects can not be elucidated on the basis of mass transfer capacity coefficient and power consumption. Conversely, information concerning the effects is obtained based on the mixedness. It is considered that the change in mixedness with time occurs over three ranges. These ranges are consistent with three stages in the mixing process. In the first stage, unsteady agitation finishes faster and the mixedness at the end of the first and the second stages in unsteady agitation take higher values than those in the steady agitation. In unsteady agitation, the variance of the local values of mixedness in the vessel becomes smaller than that in the steady agitation. In other words, unsteady agitation contributes to the homogeneous mixing over the vessel.
