    To remove persistent organic compounds and pathogenic microorganisms from water, we developed simple methods for preparing nanocarbon materials, optimized those composites with metal catalysts, and elucidated their reaction characteristics. The optimized composite material of magnetic carbon nanotubes and titanium dioxide was further investigated on its performance in secondary treated water of sewage, which led to elucidation and modeling of adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and microbes.

    In this study, we propose a new isotope separation method which utilizes the condensation process of excited molecules under the action of a laser irradiation. The concept of this separation method is based on the difference in the condensation probability between excited molecules and unexcited ones. In the experimental study, formic acid and methyl formate are irradiated by the CO laser and pass through the condenser. The uncondensed gases are collected and their isotopic contents were measured. We could observe the carbon and oxygen isotope enrichment in the uncondensed gas. The features of this method are theoretically investigated using molecular dynamics simulation.

    The application of the carbon isotope separation method using plasma chemical reactions in carbon monoxide plasma for the recovery of 14C from the nuclear facilities was investigated. The experimental results obtained using ^<13>CO/^<12>CO system show that the isotope separation factor increases with a decrease of discharge current, and the current waveforms are in the self-generated oscillation mode in the low discharge current region. The isotope separation factor also increases with a decrease of discharge frequency or the ballast resistance. In our previous study, maximum separation factor for 13C in wall carbon deposit of 2.31 and for 180 in CO2 0f 1.37 are obtained using natural isotopic composition CO plasma. In this study, we have performed the experimental study using isotopically enriched CO as reactant gas and also performed the numerical simulation of kinetic model for this isotope separation phenomenon. The experimental results show that 13C separation factor decreases monotonously from 1.66 to O.65 with increasing 13C isotopic compositions from 1.1 to 87.5%. However, the calculated results predict that separation factor for 13C increases with increasing 13C isotopic contents. The application of the carbon isotope separation method for the recovery of 14C from the graphite moderator of a dismantled Japanese gas-cooled reactor, Tokai Power Station, was evaluated numerically. The 14C separation factor of 4.6 in one unit stage was estimated through the numerical simulation of a kinetic model in CO plasma. The calculated results show that the 14C concentration in the cascade tail flow can be reduced to the environmental standard recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection(3 Bq/cm3) and to the natural abundance level(1.3 x 10-4 Bq/cm3) in 3 and 16 stages in the stripping section, respectively, and the amount of 14C-enriched CO flow can be reduced to 1/103 and 1/106 of the feed CO amount in 9 and 19 stages in the enriching section, respectively. In the case of 3-stage processing in the stripping section and 9-stage processing in the enriching section, it is estimated that the total energy consumption by the plasma generator would be about 15 kW and the maximum inner diameter of the plasma reactor in the cascade would have to be about 60 cm.

    非平衡COプラズマ中の振動励起分子の反応を用いてカーボンナノチューブの低温合成実験を行った。プラズマリアクターは内径7mmのPyrex製U字管の中にSUS製サンプルステージとNi電極棒を挿入した構造となっており、サンプルステージを陰極、Ni棒を陽極として、両電極間に直流高電圧を印可しCOプラズマを生成させた。この際、放電管自体を液体窒素で冷却し、プラズマ中の非平衡性を強め、振動励起分子の生成を促進させた。基板材質としては、単結晶Si、ほう珪酸ガラス、PETを用いて合成実験を行った。基板上への触媒金属微粒子の調製方法としては、酢酸金属のエタノール溶液を用いたディプコーティング法、Ni電極を用いたスパッタリング法の二つの方法を試した。合成した炭素膜をSEMにより観察を行ったところ、液体窒素冷却下において直径数十〜数百nm、長さ数十μm程度のカーボンナノファイバー(CNF)の生成を確認することができた。その時の合成条件は、放電圧力800Pa、ガス組成CO/Ar=50/50、放電電流:2mA、ガス総流量:20sccm、合成時間:1〜3時間であった。Raman分光から、グラフェンシートに特有のG-bandに強いピークを持つことを確認したが、FT-IRスペクトルではC=0の吸収ピークも確認されたことから、炭素だけでなく酸素をも含んだナノファイバーであることが示唆された。触媒調製方法を比較する実験を行ったところ、スパッタリング法を用いた方が、容易に且つ一様にCNFを合成することができた。基板材質のCNF合成への影響を調べる実験においては、ほう珪酸ガラス上に合成されたCNFが最もその直径が細く、また、PET、単結晶Si基板に比べ均質なCNFの合成を行うことができた。このように、液体窒素冷却下においてCNFが合成できたことは、工業的にも学術的にも大変興味深い。

    振動励起状態の数密度分布に関する理論検討を昨年度に引き続き実施した。重い同位体である^<14>N^<15>N分子の振動励起状態の数密度が、^<14>N_2に比べて高くなる。しかしながら、注意すべきは、解離した窒素原子の振る舞いである。解離した窒素原子は、振動-並進緩和の効果が大きく、せっかく生成された窒素分子の振動励起状態をかなりな速度係数で脱励起させることが判明し、しかも1量子遷移ではなく、多量子遷移がおおきくなるため、同位体効果を期待するには、窒素分子の解離はよく際せねばならないと言う結論に達した。
    こうした計算結果をふまえて、2年度目の実験的研究として、解離度を抑えた窒素プラズマの生成の研究をおこなった。そのための要諦は、放電圧力を高めにして、電子温度の低下を図ることであることが判明した。研究に着手する前の見通しとしては、高い放電圧力では、同位体間の緩和が進むために、同位体効果を期待できないのではないかという恐れもあったが、10Torr程度の放電圧力でも十分同位体効果を期待できる上に、放電下流域では電子温度の低下が速やかに達成され、そのため解離度を抑制できることも判明した。従って、窒素同位体のプラズマ法による分離のためには、数Torr〜10Torr程度の放電圧力で、放電下流域を利用することが最適、との結論に達した。この際、電子温度としては約0.5eV,電子密度としては約5x10^<11>cm^<-3>,ガス温度としては0.08eV程度の比較的低温のプラズマであることが判明した。

    In this project, we have studied the following two subjects, which is required to make the plasma decontamination process, which we have suggested, practicable. (1)To demonstrate the plasma decontamination process by using practical atmospheric pressure plasma. (2)To develop the process safety assessment method and to assess its process safety.
    In the former subject, we generated the atmospheric-pressure non-equilibrium plasma by using rare gases and CF_4/O_2 mixture and we carried out some experiments of removal of cobalt oxide film stained on the stainless steel plate surface. The atmospheric -pressure non-equilibrium plasma generated here had two operation modes, atmospheric pressure glow discharge and dielectric burner discharge, depending on its discharge conditions. The decontamination characteristics under each mode and various conditions were made clear. In the case of Mel CF_4/O_2 gas mixture plasma the fluorination reaction proceeds sufficiently at 180-200 degree C and almost of cobalt oxide was converted into its fluoride within 5 minutes. The fluoride could be flush out easily by water and it could indicate the possibility of practical use of this process.
    In the latter subject, we made modeling of processes of fine particle generation and its growth, adding to the evaporation of metal, which takes place in the plasma process. And also we developed the numerical calculation code to simulate a series of process which appears in the plasma process. By using this code we calculated the characteristics of fine particles generated in the plasma process. By adding to its code a collecting process by various air filter, furthermore, we completed a series of the process for the estimation process estimate the amount of fine particles which were released into the environment without collecting. Consequently, we could develop a method to obtain information fo safety assessment of the plasma decontamination technique.
