    We developed a new synthetic approach for sequence-controlled polymers through a 1 : 1 addition reaction, living anionic addition reaction (LAAR) of 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) derivatives and acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. Divinyl-functionalized sequence-controlled BAAB-type oligomers were synthesized in high yield by sequentially reacting potassium naphthalenide (K-Naph) with 1,1-bis(4-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxyphenyl)ethylene (OSi, A), DPE (H, B), and an alkyl halide possessing a vinyl group in one pot. Five covalent bonds were quantitatively formed during the reactions, so the desired symmetrical oligomers were easily isolated without tedious purification such as column chromatography. The following ADMET polymerization of the resulting divinyl-functionalized oligomer gave the sequence-controlled polymer with a well-defined BAABR-type repeating unit composed of the DPE tetramer. Our proposed synthetic approach based on the combination of LAAR and ADMET polymerization realized the facile and precise control of the monomer sequence.

    Bifunctional iridium complexes having a β-protic C-N chelating pyrazole ligand catalyze the carboxylative cyclization of 1-methylamino-2-butyne under atmospheric CO2. This reaction affords a five-membered cyclic urethane, along with a six-membered regioisomer. Alkenyliridium(III) complexes as catalytic intermediate models are formed by stoichiometric reaction of related nonprotic pyrazole complexes with 1-methylamino-2-butyne and CO2 in the presence of Ag2O, although the protic pyrazole analog is too unstable to be detected. In particular, the isolable N-phenylpyrazole-ligated alkenyliridium(III) complex with a cyclic urethane framework is characterized by X-ray crystallography. The β-protic pyrazole ligand would be capable of accelerating protonolysis of the alkenyl carbon-iridium bond in the key intermediate, releasing the cyclic urethane product, and being responsible for the catalytic function.

    Protic pyrazoles (N-unsubstituted pyrazoles) have been versatile ligands in various fields, such as materials chemistry and homogeneous catalysis, owing to their proton-responsive nature. This review provides an overview of the reactivities of protic pyrazole complexes. The coordination chemistry of pincer-type 2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridines is first surveyed as a class of compounds for which significant advances have made in the last decade. The stoichiometric reactivities of protic pyrazole complexes with inorganic nitrogenous compounds are then described, which possibly relates to the inorganic nitrogen cycle in nature. The last part of this article is devoted to outlining the catalytic application of protic pyrazole complexes, emphasizing the mechanistic aspect. The role of the NH group in the protic pyrazole ligand and resulting metal–ligand cooperation in these transformations are discussed.

    The catalytic hydrodefluorination (HDF) with a bifunctional azairidacycle using HCOOK was examined for cyano- and chloro-substituted fluoroarenes, including penta- and tetrafluorobenzonitriles, tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, tetrafluorophthalonitrile, 3-chloro-2,4,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine, and 4-cyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine. The reaction was performed in the presence of a controlled amount of HCOOK with a substrate/catalyst ratio (S/C) of 100 in a 1:1 mixture of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and H2O at an ambient temperature of 30 °C to obtain partially fluorinated compounds with satisfactory regioselectivities. The C–F bond cleavage proceeded favorably at the para position of substituents other than fluorine, which is in consonance with the nucleophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. In the HDF of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile and 4-cyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine, which do not contain a fluorine atom at the para position of the cyano group, the double defluorination occurred solely at the 2- and 5-positions, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The HDF of 3-chloro-2,4,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine gave preference to the C–F bond cleavage over the C–Cl bond cleavage, unlike the dehalogenation pathway via electron-transfer radical anion fragmentation. In addition, new azairidacycles with an electron-donating methoxy substituent on the C–N chelating ligand were synthesized and served as a catalyst precursor (0.2 mol%) for the transfer hydrogenative defluorination of pentafluoropyridine, leading to 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine with up to a turnover number (TON) of 418.

    In order to realize the catalytic synthesis of nitrogen-containing organic compounds from ammonia, we focused on metal-ligand bifunctional catalysts, which can cleave the N-H bond of ammonia and form C-N bonds effectively. We found that amido complexes of ruthenium and iridium react with ammonia, leading to intramolecular amination of to a C-F bond. In addition, metal complexes with different Bronsted acidity of the proton-responsive site on the ligand, such as dihydropyridylidene and trifluoromethylpyrazole ruthenium complexes, were newly synthesized to improve the activation efficiency of ammonia. Although these complexes promote the N-H bond cleavage of ammonia, the trifluoromethylpyrazole complex catalyzed isomerization of propargylic alcohols to enones.
