    Thermoplastic starch (TPS) was prepared from cassava starch blended with glycerol (70:30 w/w). Gelatin (Gel) was incorporated into the TPS in water. The TPS/Gel was melt-blended with polyethylene-grafted-maleic anhydride (PEMAH). Maximum tensile strength of the TPS/PEMAH/Gel10 (29.3 MPa) increased significantly compared to the TPS/PEMAH blend (6.3 MPa), while elongation at break was 70%. The morphology of the TPS/PEMAH showed co-continuous morphology, while phase inversion occurred with the addition of Gel. The Gel was dispersed in the TPS matrix and covered the PEMAH. The TPS/PEMAH/Gel was nanoparticles (200 nm) in the TPS matrix. It showed two melting temperatures for PEMAH due to two structures with different crystal sizes. Melt viscosity of the TPS/PEMAH was enhanced with increasing Gel as the reaction induced chain extension. FTIR and rheology measurements confirmed the reaction between -NH groups of Gel and MAH groups of PEMAH. This reaction improved interfacial adhesion, morphology, and the mechanical properties of the blends.

    Cassava starch was blended with glycerol to prepare thermoplastic starch (TPS). Thermoplastic starch was premixed with sericin (TPSS) by solution mixing and then melt-blended with polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride (PEMAH). The effect of sericin on the mechanical properties, morphology, thermal properties, rheology, and reaction mechanism was investigated. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the TPSS10/PEMAH blend were improved to 12.2 MPa and 100.4%, respectively. The TPS/PEMAH morphology presented polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride particles (2 μm) dispersed in the thermoplastic starch matrix, which decreased in size to approximately 200 nm when 5% sericin was used. The melting temperature of polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride (121 °C) decreased to 111 °C because of the small crystal size of the polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride phase. The viscosity of TPS/PEMAH increased with increasing sericin content because of the chain extension. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the reaction between the amino groups of sericin and the maleic anhydride groups of polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride. This reaction reduced the interfacial tension between thermoplastic starch and polyethylene grafted maleic anhydride, which improved the compatibility, mechanical properties, and morphology of the blend.

    Oil resistant thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) were prepared using mung bean thermoplastic starch (MTPS) blending with rubbers and sericin. Sericin was incorporated into MTPS as a compatibilizer. MTPS with sericin (MTPSS) was blended with natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized NR (ENR). Sericin at 5% improved the tensile strength (10 MPa), elastic recovery (52%) and morphology of the MTPSS/ENR blend. The mechanical properties, elastic recovery and morphology of the MTPSS5/NR blend were improved by the addition of ENR. The MTPSS/ENR showed palm (28%) and motor oils (8%) swelling resistance because of the hydrophilicity of MTPS and high polarity of ENR. The MTPSS/ENR/NR showed gasoline swelling resistance (104%) because of the hydrophilicity of MTPS and low polarity of NR. FTIR confirmed a reaction between the -NH groups of sericin and the epoxy groups of ENR. This reaction improved the compatibility, mechanical properties, elastic recovery, morphology and oils swelling resistance of the blends.

    A mixture of corn starch and glycerol plasticizer (CSG) was blended with latex natural rubber (LNR) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The addition of 10 phr of CMC improved the Young's modulus (6.7 MPa), tensile strength (8 MPa), and elongation at break (80%) of the CSG/LNR blend. The morphology of the CSG/LNR/CMC blends showed a uniform distribution of LNR particles (1-3 µm) in the CSG matrix. The addition of CMC enhanced the swelling ability and water droplet contact angle of the blends owing to the swelling properties, interfacial crosslinking, and amphiphilic structure of CMC. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the reaction between the C=C bond of LNR and the carboxyl groups (-COO-) of CMC, in which the Na+ ions in CMC acted as a catalyst. Notably, the mechanical properties of the CSG/LNR/CMC blend were improved owing to the miscibility of CSG/CMC and the CMC/LNR interfacial reaction. The CSG/LNR/CMC biodegradable polymer with high mechanical properties and interfacial tension can be used for packaging, agriculture, and medical applications.

    Expanded graphite (EG) and hydrogenated natural rubber (HNR) latexes with the hydrogenation conversion of 60 and 95 mol% (HNR60 and HNR95, respectively) were prepared according to our proposed procedure, and they were blended in the latex stage. The characterization of EG was determined through BET surface area determination, XRD, and SEM. The investigation of HNR/EG blends was carried out through the tensile property measurement, weather resistance determination, electromagnetic shielding efficiency measurement, and TEM observations. The SEM images and the angles of X‐ray diffraction of EG showed the significant expansion of the graphite and graphitic carbon structure with the interlayer spacing (d) of 3.357 Å. The EG was porous with 91.2146 m2/g of BET‐specific surface by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms measurements. The highest tensile property, weather resistance, and electromagnetic shielding efficiency of HNR60 were achieved when the amount of dispersed EG was 10%. In contrast, those of HNR95 were achieved when the amount of dispersed EG was 12%. EG was found to be well dispersed in HNR95 than HNR60 as being verified through TEM and FIB‐SEM observations.

    The influence of electron-beam irradiation on polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated with a focus on crystallization. A high-temperature (200°C) creep test revealed that the HDPE gradually increased cross-linking density in the range 30-120 kGy, while the PP underwent a chain scission which was quantitatively evaluated by gel permeation chromatography. The mechanical properties were measured in the range -150 to 200°C by a dynamic mechanical analysis. A small presence of C=C and C=O bonds was found in the irradiated PP by a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Crystallization kinetics measured by differential scanning calorimetry and hot-stage optical microscopy results were influenced tremendously by irradiation for HDPE and to a lesser extent for PP. Irradiation caused a decrease in both the number of nucleation centres and the growth rate of individual spherulites. Crystallization was analysed in detail with the help of Hoffman-Lauritzen, Avrami and Arrhenius equations. Interestingly an increasing β-crystal formation with an increasing irradiation level was discovered for PP by X-ray diffraction. A generation of defects in the crystalline structure owing to irradiation was discussed.

    Abstract

    The compatibility of binary blend of epoxidized natural rubber and polyaniline was investigated. Epoxidized natural rubber with 25 mol% of epoxy group content was prepared through epoxidation of deproteinized natural rubber in latex stage. Blends of epoxidized natural rubber and polyaniline with various ratios were prepared. The compatibility of the blends was examined through differential scanning calorimetry measurement and scanning electron microscopy observation. Obtained result showed that the presence of epoxy group significantly improved the compatibility of binary blends of epoxidized natural rubber and polyaniline blends. The compatibility significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity of epoxidized natural rubber/polyaniline blends.

    In this study, we investigated the improvement of thermal properties of Vietnam deproteinized natural rubber (DPNR) via graft copolymerization of styrene/acrylonitrile and transfer hydrogenation. The graft copolymerization was achieved successfully in the latex stage using tert‐butyl hydroperoxide and tetraethylenepentamine as radical initiators at 30°C. The obtained graft copolymer was hydrogenated by a diimide reduction system in the presence of different copper (II) homogeneous catalysts. The effects of styrene to acrylonitrile on the total conversion and the grafting efficiency have been studied. The structural characterization of the obtained copolymers was made by 1H NMR and ATR‐FTIR. The graft DPNR was then characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effects of different copper (II) catalysts on the system have been evaluated by the hydrogenation degree of each hydrogenated sample. The improvement of the thermal properties of the graft copolymers was confirmed by thermal gravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis. The core‐shell arrangement was obtained in both DPNR‐graft‐PS/PAN and hydrogenated‐DPNR‐graft‐PS/PAN by transmission electron microscopy.

    Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) was developed by blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) with rubber. Thermoplastic starch-chitosan (TPSC) was prepared by the solution mixing of cassava starch, chitosan (CTS) and glycerol in acidified water (lactic acid 1 wt%) at 80 °C follow by melt mixing at 130 °C. Sodium benzoate (BEN) and chlorhexidine gluconate (Cl) were added during the solution mixing as additives for antimicrobial properties. TPSC was melt-mixed with epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) (70/30 wt/wt). The tensile strength and elongation at break of the TPSC/ENR increased with the additive content. Elastic recovery was improved by the addition of Cl. A new peak in the FTIR data confirmed the reaction between the reactive functional groups of the CTS and the additives with the epoxy groups of ENR. These reactions and miscibility of the TPSC/ENR/additives blends improved the mechanical properties, elasticity, morphology, and antimicrobial properties of the blends.

    Abstract

    Simultaneous one‐pot syntheses of PA66 and HAp were carried out by extracting H2O and CO2 from PA66 monomers and HAp raw materials, respectively, resulting in the formation of a polyamide (PA) 66‐hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocomposite. During the process, a spherical nano‐sized HAp particle was precipitated following dissolution of micro‐sized CaHPO4・2H2O. The PA66 monomers were subsequently adsorbed onto the generated HAp product. Some of the adsorbed PA66 monomers formed a bound polymer on HAp, and an increase in the adhesiveness of the PA66‐HAp interface was observed as the polymerization progressed. During this process, the synthesis of a nanocomposite from a micro‐sized raw material and creation of an autonomous strong interface between the matrix and filler was achieved. In addition, the shape of the resultant HAp was controllable and could be modified to needle shape by the addition of F and Mg2+ ions to the raw material. HAp could also be changed to plate shape via octa‐calcium phosphate (OCP). Notably, during the synthesis, the filler shape of the nanocomposite could be controlled to 0D (particle), 1D (needle), and 2D (plate).

    Understanding the adhesion process between a rigid material (filler) and a viscoelastic material is important for designing an enhanced industrial material. However, the adhesion process is not simple because the properties of the adhesive, adherend, and interface are intricately influenced by this process. Here we investigate the adhesion of microspheres onto rubber films to clarify the dominant factor in the adhesion process. A rubber meniscus first forms on the sphere surface, followed by sedimentation of the sphere into the rubber film. This sedimentation is even observed when the surface free energy of the sphere is lower than that of the rubber film, which indicates that the driving force of meniscus formation obeys Young's equation on a tangential line of the sphere. The dominant factor of the sedimentation behavior is investigated by using atomic force microscopy force-sample deformation curve measurements and creep tests on the rubber films. These experimental results demonstrate that the adhesion process is strongly dominated by the viscoelastic property of the bulk rubber as opposed to the sphere and interface properties.

    Two trimellitic anhydride-functionalized, thermally reduced graphenes with different aspect ratios, A f, and the same C/O ratio (8:1) were prepared and melt-mixed into poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposites were studied with a focus on plastic deformation behavior. A slight increase in the G' of the melt was observed for the surface-modified low-A f graphene composites (A f = 20) below the percolation threshold, whereas a significant enhancement in G' was observed for higher-A f graphene composites (A f = 80) at all graphene loadings, both below and above the percolation concentration. Furthermore, the use of modified low-A f graphene caused an improvement both in Young's modulus and elongation at break of the resulting PET nanocomposites because of enhancement of interfacial adhesion between filler and matrix which resulted in the formation of a coupled network via covalent bonding and the suppression both of strain-induced orientation and strain-induced crystallization. By contrast, the use of modified higher-A f surface graphene in nanocomposites caused a drastic improvement in Young's modulus but lower elongation-at-break than with the unmodified counterpart; the former effect is due to the formation of denser coupled networks and stronger interfacial adhesion as a result of graphene surface modification and the latter is due to the added geometrical restriction in unentangling chains from the PET matrix in the presence of higher-A f graphene. The preceding observations demonstrate the potential impacts of tuning both surface chemistry and aspect ratio of graphene in the fabrication of PET/graphene composites.

    Graphene of two different aspect ratios, A f, was melt mixed with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) to form amorphous PET/graphene composites with less than 5% crystallinity. The higher-order structure and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in these composites were investigated using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis, whereas transmission electron microscopy, melt rheology, and electrical conductivity were used to study the graphene dispersion. A decrease in heat capacity changes, ΔC p, of PET in nanocomposites at the glass transition temperature, T g, without T g change suggests that a rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) of PET was formed at the PET/graphene interface. The stiffening effect of graphene below 1 wt % loading is quite small in the glassy state region and independent of the A f of graphene. Above 2 wt %, graphene forms a mechanical percolation network with the RAF of PET and the PET chains are geometrically restricted by the incorporation of graphene with a high A f, resulting in an unexpectedly higher modulus of nanocomposites both below and above T g.

    To obtain a polyester‐based toner with both low‐energy fusing performance and good storage stability, we investigated a toner with a core–shell structure comprising two different polyesters with a low glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and a high Tg, respectively. In this study, to fabricate and control the properties of core–shell‐structured toner, we used confocal Raman spectroscopy to study mutual diffusion at the interface between the polyesters used as the core and shell for their adhesion. The PG‐PES and BPA‐PES concentration profiles at the their interfaces indicated asymmetric behavior, which appeared to be due to the one‐sided diffusion of PG‐PES with a molecular weight less than 2000 g/mol. Measurements conducted using samples having a narrow molecular weight distribution showed that a decrease of the amount of the low molecular weight component was also effective in preventing one‐sided diffusion. Furthermore, the value of the apparent mutual diffusion coefficient greatly changed in the range of several orders by changing the annealing temperature and the molecular weight. We demonstrated that the quality of toner could be improved by controlling the diffusion behavior at the interface in the core–shell structure. POLYM. ENG.     In nonpolar polymers, positronium (Ps) is dominantly formed by fast intraspur reactions of the energetic positron, but its formation is partially contributed by recombination of weakly bound Mott-Wannier-like positron-electron pairs and is susceptible to electric field and positron irradiation induced perturbations. The average initial energy of para-Ps (p-Ps) formed by recombination is found to be about half the energy of ordinary p-Ps dominantly formed by the fast intraspur reactions.

    The interfacial thickness between different polymers depends on miscibility. Especially the interactionparameter x which dominate miscibility between different polymers can be estimated from theequilibrium interfacial thickness in immiscible polymer pair. Usually because the interfacial thicknessbetween immiscible polymers is very thin, the adhesion strength is very low. We measured the interfaceformation process in spin-coating samples by a high-speed ellipsometer and observed a behaviorthat interfacial thickness increased suddenly. This behavior occurred in a temperature less than Tg ofbulk and showed a large increasing speed of interfacial thickness. Moreover, an interfacial thicknessformed by this behavior reached several times of the equilibrium interfacial thickness in immisciblesystems. We applied this behavior to adhesion between immiscible polymers and succeeded in obtainingstrong adhesion.

    Because the adhesives usually consist of the multicomponents containing the polymer, the knowledge such as not only the miscibility between components but also the structure and properties in the adhesion interface is very important. We measured the interfacial thickness and the concentration profile between different polymers by using an ellipsometry and some methods of microscopy, and considered these from the viewpoint of miscibility. And, in order to investigate the initial formation process of the interface, the behavior of interfacial region was measured by a high-speed ellipsometry,whose measuring-time-interval was very short. It was considered that high mobility and entropic elasticity of the interfacial molecules contributed to the formation of the interfacial region on the initial stage. Moreover, the adhesion strength was measured in non-reactive and reactive systems and the relation between interfacial structure and adhesion strength was discussed.

    Photo-alignment of polymerizable liquid crystal (PLC) on poly(methyl mathacrylate) (PMMA)/silsesquioxane containing citraconic imide (SQ-CI) blend was investigated as a model of an unification of two functional layers (photo-alignment layer/planarization layer). In PMMA/SQ-CI blend with γ-butyrolactone as diluent, the PLC was aligned on the blend film after irradiation of linearly polarized UV light to the blend film. On the other hand, the blend with cyclopentanone as diluent showed no orientation of PLC. From the results of photo-alignment and the surface free energy analysis of PMMA/SQ-CI blend, it was suggested that the SQ-CI segregated to the surface of the film despite the higher surface free energy of SQ-CI compared with PMMA.

    In most adhesives that have been put to practical use, the polymers are principal ingredients. Therefore, when the polymers are mixed, the knowledge concerning the miscibility between polymers is very important to improve the performance. In addition, the miscibility is important as it significantly affects the interfacial phenomena and can help to provide an understanding of the adhesive interface. In this article, the miscibility between polymers is briefly explained and then some of the phenomena associated with it are introduced.

    Photo-alignment behavior of polymerizable liquid crystals(PLCs) on ph oto-reactive polymer containing bis(benzylidene)cyclohexanone(PbisBC) in main chain was investigated using exposure of linearly polarized ultraviolet-visible light. PLCs are oriented homogeneously on PbisBC thin film after exposure. Photo-alignment sensit ivity was affected by initial molecular weight of PbisBC and baking condition. Retardation of PbisBC thin film was measured by photoelastic modulation method. The correlation between PLCs orientation direction and slow axis of PbisBC retardation is discussed.

    Force curve measurement of thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) release layers was performed to estimate mechanical properties with atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the relationships between mechanical properties and release force in the release layers were examined. The release layers having different organosiloxane content were formed on the PET substrate and their force curves were measured by AFM. The values of Young’s modulus and adhesive energy from these force curves in the release layers were calculated using JKR theory. An increase in the value of Young’s modulus was observed with an increase in the content of organosiloxane compound. Furthermore, a high correlation between Young’s modulus and release force was found. Therefore, it was suggested that Young’s modulus of the release layer influences the value of the release force of a model PSA. As a result, it was concluded that these measurements and analyses are extremely useful for the direct estimation of the mechanical properties of PDMS release layers.

    Conductive polymer composites filled with carbon or metal particles exhibit a positive-temperature-coefficient (PTC) of resistivity. In our previous studies, we speculated that only the volume expansion of polymers upon heating cause the PTC effect and we conducted quantitative analyses focusing on the decrease of the apparent filler content of the composites during volume expansion of polymers. Later, we found that PTC effect occurs when the conductive path is cut off due to crystal melting and volume expansion of the base polymer along with rising temperature. In this study, we analyzed the PTC effect of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/Ni composite quantitatively and found that the apparent Ni content (CNi(T)) decreases along with rising temperature. When CNi(T) becomes about 98% of the Ni content at room temperature (CNi-R.T.), the resistivity is 10 times of that at room temperature. When CNi(T) becomes about 96% of CNi-R.T., the resistivity exceeds 108 Ω·cm and the composites serve as insulators. In conclusion, we proved that, the Ni content is not constant when the PTC effect occurs.

    The miscibility of main-chain liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) with some amorphous polymers was investigated for the blends prepared by solution casting. It was found that LCP was miscible with styrene-acrylonitrile random copolymers (SAN) which have AN content from 4 to 7 (SAN4~7). Both blends of LCP with PS and with SAN19 were phase-separated via the spinodal decomposition. The immiscible blend system of LCP/SAN19 was applied to the scattered polarizing plate by controlling phase-separated morphology and orientation of LCP molecules, which were aligned parallel to the rubbing direction by applying magnetic field. For the miscible blend system of LCP/SAN6, the control of the birefringence was attempted and it was shown that the wavelength dispersion of birefringence became smaller than that of neat LCP. This result suggests the possibility to a new mono-layer retardation film which has larger birefringence in larger wavelength.

    Most of ion-exchange membranes are formed by polymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene and then the ion-exchange groups are introduced into the membranes. During the polymerization process, the phaseseparation takes place and it is considered that the formed morphology affects the performance of membrane remarkably. Usually rubber component is added to the mixture of styrene and divinylbenzene in order to improve the brittleness of the membrane and this may induce the phase separation. In this study, the structure development during polymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene in the existence of rubber was measured by a light scattering, an optical microscope and a transmission electron microscope. A peak in the light scattering profile appeared and regularly phase-separated morphology was observed by optical microscopy. These results mean that the phase-separation into polystyrene-rich phase and rubber-rich phase took place via spinodal decomposition mechanism (polymerization induced phase separation). It was also suggested that the phaseseparated morphology can be controlled by changes of polymerization speed and miscibility between polystyrene and rubber. The phase-separated morphology of membrane polymerized in the existence of foundation cloth which consisted of poly (vinyl chloride) was also observed. It was found that the domain size of phase-separated morphology was remarkably different between inside and outside of foundation cloth.

    We found that the spherulite of poly (trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) has high birefringence and shows vivid interference colors, such as yellow, blue and green, under a polarized microscope without a sensitive tint plate. The birefringence of the PTT spherulite was evaluated to be ca. 0.065 by using the Michel-Levy chart. The extremely large birefringence seems to cause the unique and colorful image under the microscope without the plate. The birefringence in the spherulite was found to increase with increasing a distance from the center of the spherulite, suggesting that ordering in spherulite increases along the radius direction. As the crystallization temperature decreased, the ordering in spherulite increased.

    The interfacial structure of immiscible bilayer films of amorphous polyamide (aPA) /polysulfone (PSU) was investigated by ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The interfacial thickness of the annealed aPA/non-functionalized PSU sample was smaller than the measurable limit of ellipsometry (ca. 2nm). However, by grafting a maleic anhydride group to the PSU chain, the thickness increased to the order of 40nm at 200°C. It was also found from AFM measurements that the interface was undulated, with the scale of the lateral roughness being ca. 40nm. Therefore, it is likely that, during the interfacial reaction between the amine-terminated aPA and the MAH-functionalized PSU, an undulated interface was formed. This is probably because in situ formed copolymers entropically destabilized the interface by adopting a tightly packed conformation at high copolymer concentrations, which resulted in an increase of the interfacial area. The interfacial thickness determined by ellipsometry seems to include the contribution of the amplitude of the undulation.

    Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) properties of polymers are very important data for polymer processing, especially, injection molding. The coefficients of thermal expansion in polymers are much larger than those of metals and inorganic materials. So the changing of specific volumes in polymers is very large under processing, i. e., for changes of temperature and pressure. In this paper we describe the relationship between PVT behavior and processing in polymers.

    By placing micrometer-sized solid particles on a rubber film and analyzing the meniscus formed at the interface and the settling behavior of the particles, the following findings were made regarding the adhesion (stickiness) mechanism: 1. spontaneous meniscus formation may not be the most important factor in the development of stickiness, but it is probably related; 2. viscoelastic properties of rubber are important (viscosity, deformation speed, etc.), 3. In tackifier-doped systems, spontaneous wetting (meniscus formation and particle sedimentation) is not promoted, and deformation of the rubber surface by external loading is important for tack development, and 4. Formation of surface layer and phase separation structure in tackifier-doped systems is related in tack development (at least the matrix must remain soft).

    It aimed to achieve an artificial blood vessel of 5mm or less in inside diameter. By using a sheet of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene that was a model material of the artificial blood vessel, the improvement of adhesion with collagen that was an intermediate material for adhesion with the endothelial cell was attempted. The anchor effect by cutting the fibril by the surface treatment and making collagen easy to invade the inside of film was important in the adhesion. An increase in the interaction by the introduction of the polarity functional groups with oxygen and an increase in carbon ratio were also important. When the collagen was processed by the ion beam, the composition of amino-acid has changed to remove the amino-acids of weak bonding from the protein. Though the endothelial cell is easily bonded to collagen, it is considered that the adhesion of platelet to collagen changes by the change in the amino-acid composition as an increase in the amount of ion beam irradiation.

    ポリマーブレンドの相挙動および相分離構造に関してせん断流動は大きな影響を及ぼすが、それらを明らかにするために粘弾性的なパラメータの影響を昨年に引き続き調べた。例えば、低温で混合し高温で相分離する下限臨界共溶温度(LCST)型相図を有するポリスチレン/ポリビニルメチルエーテルブレンドについて、相図のせん断速度依存性を測定するとともにレオメータを用いてその粘弾性挙動を測定した。本混合系では、目視による曇点測定から低せん断速度下ではせん断速度に伴い相図が低温側にシフトした後、あるせん断速度以上では逆に高温側にシフトする挙動が見られた。この挙動について、2つのポリマー間の粘度が大きく異なるためであることを明らかにした。また、平行平板レオメータの振動モードを用いても粘弾性パラメータの変化からこのせん断誘起相分離と相溶解の現象を測定することができた。さらに、せん断流動停止後の相分離構造の平均サイズが、せん断を加えた温度と1相-2相境界温度との差つまり過冷却度に依存していることを突き止めた。それに引き続く相分離構造の粗大化挙動の速度も、初期の相分離構造のサイズつまりは過冷却度に大きく依存していた。
    ポリマーブレンドだけではなく、純粋なポリマー(ポリεカブロラクトン)における結晶化にせん断流動がどのような影響を与えるかについても検討を行った。せん断流動により結晶化の誘導期間が短縮され結晶化スピードも増加することが見出された。この挙動に対して、動的せん断弾性率や粘度が結晶化プロセスにともなう構造変化に対して大変敏感であることがわかった。
    ポリビニルメチルエーテルが高温で架橋を形成し、この挙動が粘弾性挙動に大きく影響を及ぼされることを明らかにした。種々の粘弾性パラメータの挙動からゲル化点を求め、ゲル化の理論との比較を行い、粘弾性挙動から得られた結果と一致することを明らかにした。

    熱硬化性樹脂であるビスフェノールA型ジシアナ-トをPVT(圧力-体積-温度)測定装置を用いて高静水圧下で熱硬化させたところ、予想に反して高圧下では硬化収縮を抑えられることがわかった。低収縮の原因を追求するために、X線回折、赤外吸収スペクトルなどによる構造解析を行った。また、分子力学法による分子構造の計算を行い、上記の方法で考えられる構造と比較することによって高圧硬化における分子構造の変化を調べた。高圧硬化では分子が常圧下での硬化と比べてより規則的に配列していることがわかった。体積収縮が抑えられることについては、かさ高いこの分子が規則的に配列した構造に起因すると考えられる。また、低収縮にも拘わらず、力学物性の優れたものが得られた。
    ポリスチレンなどの非晶性高分子のガラス状態及びガラス化をPVT装置により調べた。高圧下で昇温・降温を行ったガラスについて、ガラス転移温度以上でも溶融しにくい試料を作製することができることがわかった。この試料について熱測定および動的粘弾性測定を行い、その挙動を調べた。
    ポリマーブレンドの相図の圧力依存性について、圧力下での曇点測定により評価した。また、この挙動について状態方程式理論を用いて計算し、実験と理論がよく一致することを確かめるとともに、混合系の体積の挙動が圧力下での相挙動に大きく影響を及ぼしていることがわかった。高圧下での相分離現象については、現在、測定中であり、相分離の速度や相図との関わりについて追跡している。さらには、高圧下で形成される多相構造を有する試料の熱測定・力学測定を行い、構造制御による材料物性の高性能化を図る予定である。
