    ABSTRACT

To investigate the anisotropic properties of biomaterials, two distinct classes are considered as follows: polymer‐based (cellulose in plants) and crystalline‐based (enamel in teeth), each demonstrating distinct structural and functional characteristics. Four‐angle polarization spectral mapping of sub‐1‐ bamboo slices was carried out in the mid‐IR spectral range (2.5–20 ) to reveal the 3D organization of the chemical bonding of cellulose using the key characteristic absorption bands associated with C–O–C and C–N vibrational modes. The longitudinal and transverse microtome slices revealed a switch between the presence and absence of dichroism in parenchyma cell walls and vascular bundles. The cell wall showed continuous alignment of the C–O–C stretching vibrational mode (8.6 /1163 ) down to the pixel resolution of in the transverse slice; the cell wall thickness is . Thin microtomed slices of a tooth were measured in transmission and reflection modes. The single‐point reflection measurements, performed using two perpendicular orientations, revealed orientational anisotropy in the enamel, which was absent in the dentin region. High subdiffraction lateral resolution was numerically validated using a simplified toy model of a Gaussian beam. The model showed that the orientation of small absorbers can be revealed using a focal spot of .

    Abstract

Next-generation power electronics require efficient heat dissipation management, and molecular design guidelines are needed to develop polymers with high thermal conductivity. Polymer materials have considerably lower thermal conductivity than metals and ceramics due to phonon scattering in the amorphous region. The spontaneous orientation of the molecular chains of liquid crystalline polymers could potentially give rise to high thermal conductivity, but the molecular design of such polymers remains largely empirical. In this study, we developed a machine learning model that predicts with more than 96% accuracy whether liquid crystalline states will form based on the chemical structure of the polymer. By exploring the inverse mapping of this model, we identified a comprehensive set of chemical structures for liquid crystalline polyimides. The polymers were then experimentally synthesized, and the results confirmed that they form liquid crystalline phases, with all polymers exhibiting calculated thermal conductivities within the range of 0.722–1.26 W m−1 K−1.

Determination of refractive index of micro-disks of a calcinated (1100^\circC in air) photo-resist SZ2080^\mathrm{TM} was carried out using transmission and reflection spectroscopy. Interference fringes at specific wavenumbers/wavelengths were selected for determination of the optical thickness, hence, the refractive index when the thickness of micro-disks was measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Refractive index of disks of \sim 6± 1~\mum thickness were determined at visible and IR (2.5-13~\mum) spectral ranges and where 2.2± 0.2 at visible and IR wavelengths. Peculiarities of optical characterisation of micro-optical structures are discussed in view of possible uncertainties in the definition of geometric parameters, shape and mass density redistribution.

    Abstract

Computational methods have been established as cornerstones in optical imaging and holography in recent years. Every year, the dependence of optical imaging and holography on computational methods is increasing significantly to the extent that optical methods and components are being completely and efficiently replaced with computational methods at low cost. This roadmap reviews the current scenario in four major areas namely incoherent digital holography, quantitative phase imaging, imaging through scattering layers, and super-resolution imaging. In addition to registering the perspectives of the modern-day architects of the above research areas, the roadmap also reports some of the latest studies on the topic. Computational codes and pseudocodes are presented for computational methods in a plug-and-play fashion for readers to not only read and understand but also practice the latest algorithms with their data. We believe that this roadmap will be a valuable tool for analyzing the current trends in computational methods to predict and prepare the future of computational methods in optical imaging and holography.

Polarimetry is used to determine the Stokes parameters of a laser beam. Once all four S0,1,2,3 parameters are determined, the state of polarisation is established. Upon reflection of a laser beam with the defined S polarisation state, the directly measured S parameters can be used to determine the optical properties of the surface, which modify the S-state upon reflection. Here, we use polarimetry for the determination of surface anisotropies related to the birefringence and dichroism of different materials, which have a common feature of linear patterns with different alignments and scales. It is shown that polarimetry in the back-reflected light is complementary to ellipsometry and four-polarisation camera imaging; experiments were carried out using a microscope.

Abstract<p>Photomechanical crystals have applications in light-fuelled actuators and soft robots. Herein, we describe light-responsive, versatile, anthraquinone dye crystal oscillators actuated via natural vibrations that are resonated by a photothermal effect. A black needle-shaped crystal cantilever oscillates at 70 Hz in the first mode of natural vibration upon irradiation by broad-wavelength light ranging from the ultraviolet through the visible to the near infrared, and also under continuous-wavelength light (400–2000 nm). The second and third natural vibration modes are induced at higher frequencies (530 and 1350 Hz) and evidence complex flagellum-like motions. The frequency can be readily tuned by moving the support of a crystal piece; this is analogous to playing a guitar. The crystal exhibits high durability (more than 10,000 cycles): the high elasticity prevents deterioration. Oscillatory motions can be designed via simulations using finite element analysis. This work will facilitate the use of photomechanical crystals in light-fuelled soft robots.</p>

    Abstract

Four Stokes parameters (1852) define the polarization state of light. Measured changes of the Stokes vector of light traversing an inhomogeneous sample are linked to the local anisotropies of absorption and refraction and are harnessed over an increasing range of applications in photonics, material, and space/earth observation. Several independent polarization sensitive measurements are usually required for determination of the all four Stokes parameters, which makes such characterization procedure time‐consuming or requires complex setups. Here, a single‐snapshot approach to Stokes polarimetry in transmission is introduced by use of a four‐polarization camera with the on‐chip integrated polarizers. A quarter‐waveplate is added in front of the sample and is illuminated by a linearly polarized light. This approach is demonstrated by measuring birefringence of spider silk of only m‐diameter using microscopy, however, due to its generic nature, it is transferable to other spectral ranges and imaging applications, e.g., imaging from a fast moving satellite or drone or monitoring fast changing events such as phase transitions.

The analysis of biological samples with polarized infrared spectroscopy (p-IR) has long been a widely practiced method for the determination of sample orientation and structural properties. In contrast to earlier works, which employed this method to investigate the fundamental chemistry of biological systems, recent interests are moving toward “real-world” applications for the evaluation and diagnosis of pathological states. This focal point review provides an up-to-date synopsis of the knowledge of biological materials garnered through linearly p-IR on biomolecules, cells, and tissues. An overview of the theory with special consideration to biological samples is provided. Different modalities which can be employed along with their capabilities and limitations are outlined. Furthermore, an in-depth discussion of factors regarding sample preparation, sample properties, and instrumentation, which can affect p-IR analysis is provided. Additionally, attention is drawn to the potential impacts of analysis of biological samples with inherently polarized light sources, such as synchrotron light and quantum cascade lasers. The vast applications of p-IR for the determination of the structure and orientation of biological samples are given. In conclusion, with considerations to emerging instrumentation, findings by other techniques, and the shift of focus toward clinical applications, we speculate on the future directions of this methodology.

    Abstract

The flourishing field of soft robotics requires versatile actuation methodology. Natural vibration is a physical phenomenon that can occur in any material. Here, we report high-speed bending of anisole crystals by natural vibration induced by the photothermal effect. Rod-shaped crystal cantilevers undergo small, fast repetitive bending (~0.2°) due to natural vibration accompanied by large photothermal bending (~1°) under ultraviolet light irradiation. The natural vibration is greatly amplified by resonance upon pulsed light irradiation at the natural frequency to realise high frequency (~700 Hz), large bending (~4°), and high energy conversion efficiency from light to mechanical energy. The natural vibration is induced by the thermal load generated by the temperature gradient in the crystal due to the photothermal effect. The bending behaviour is successfully simulated using finite element analysis. Any light-absorbing crystal can be actuated by photothermally induced natural vibration. This finding of versatile crystal actuation can lead to the development of soft robots with high-speed and high-efficient actuation capabilities.

    Abstract

The spread of data-driven materials research has increased the need for systematically designed materials property databases. However, the development of polymer databases has lagged far behind other material systems. We present RadonPy, an open-source library that can automate the complete process of all-atom classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations applicable to a wide variety of polymeric materials. Herein, 15 different properties were calculated for more than 1000 amorphous polymers. The MD-calculated properties were systematically compared with experimental data to validate the calculation conditions; the bias and variance in the MD-calculated properties were successfully calibrated by a machine learning technique. During the high-throughput data production, we identified eight amorphous polymers with extremely high thermal conductivity (&gt;0.4 W ∙ m–1 ∙ K–1) and their underlying mechanisms. Similar to the advancement of materials informatics since the advent of computational property databases for inorganic crystals, database construction using RadonPy will promote the development of polymer informatics.

    Abstract

Liquid crystal elastomers that offer exceptional load-deformation response at low frequencies often require consideration of the mechanical anisotropy only along the two symmetry directions. However, emerging applications operating at high frequencies require all five true elastic constants. Here, we utilize Brillouin light spectroscopy to obtain the engineering moduli and probe the strain dependence of the elasticity anisotropy at gigahertz frequencies. The Young’s modulus anisotropy,E||/E~2.6, is unexpectedly lower than that measured by tensile testing, suggesting disparity between the local mesogenic orientation and the larger scale orientation of the network strands. Unprecedented is the robustness ofE||/Eto uniaxial load that it does not comply with continuously transformable director orientation observed in the tensile testing. Likewise, the heat conductivity is directional,κ||~3.0 withκ= 0.16 Wm−1K−1. Conceptually, this work reveals the different length scales involved in the thermoelastic anisotropy and provides insights for programming liquid crystal elastomers on-demand for high-frequency applications.

Mechanically responsive crystals have been increasingly explored, mainly based on photoisomerization. However, photoisomerization has some disadvantages for crystal actuation, such as a slow actuation speed, no actuation of thick crystals, and a narrow wavelength range. Here we report photothermally driven fast-bending actuation and simulation of a salicylideneaniline derivative crystal with an o-amino substituent in enol form. Under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, these thin (<20 μm) crystals bent but the thick (>40 μm) crystals did not due to photoisomerization; in contrast, thick crystals bent very quickly (in several milliseconds) due to the photothermal effect, even by visible light. Finally, 500 Hz high-frequency bending was achieved by pulsed UV laser irradiation. The generated photothermal energy was estimated based on the photodynamics using femtosecond transient absorption. Photothermal bending is caused by a nonsteady temperature gradient in the thickness direction due to the heat conduction of photothermal energy generated near the crystal surface. The temperature gradient was calculated based on the one-dimensional nonsteady heat conduction equation to simulate photothermally driven crystal bending successfully. Most crystals that absorb light have their own photothermal effects. It is expected that the creation and design of actuation of almost all crystals will be possible via the photothermal effect, which cannot be realized by photoisomerization, and the potential and versatility of crystals as actuation materials will expand in the near future.

The current understanding of mechanisms underlying the formation of metastatic tumors has required multi-parametric methods. The tissue micro-environment in secondary organs is not easily evaluated due to complex interpretation with existing tools. Here, we demonstrate the detection of structural modifications in proteins using emerging Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) imaging combined with light polarization. We investigated lungs affected by breast cancer metastasis in the orthotopic murine model from the pre-metastatic phase, through early micro-metastasis, up to an advanced phase, in which solid tumors are developed in lung parenchyma. The two IR-light polarization techniques revealed, for the first time, the orientational ordering of proteins upon the progression of pulmonary metastasis of breast cancer. Their distribution was complemented by detailed histological examination. Polarized contrast imaging recognised tissue structures of lungs and showed deformations in protein scaffolds induced by inflammatory infiltration, fibrosis, and tumor growth. This effect was recognised by not only changes in absorbance of the spectral bands but also by the band shifts and the appearance of new signals. Therefore, we proposed this approach as a useful tool for evaluation of progressive and irreversible molecular changes that occur sequentially in the metastatic process.

     More details

Polarisation analysis of synchrotron THz radiation was carried out with a
standard stretched polyethylene polariser and revealed that the linearly
polarised (horizontal) component contributes up to 22 +/- 5% to the circular
polarised synchrotron emission extracted by a gold-coated mirror with a
horizontal slit inserted near a bending magnet edge. Comparison with
theoretical predictions shows a qualitative match with dominance of the edge
radiation. Grid polarisers 3D-printed out of commercial acrilic resin were
tested for the polariser function and showed spectral regions where the
dichroic ratio DR > 1 and < 1 implying importance of molecular and/or stress
induced anisotropy. Metal-coated 3D-printed THz optical elements can find a
range of applications in intensity and polarisation control of THz beams.

The measurement system of thermo-spectroscopy has been developed to obtain infrared thermographical image and Infrared spectroscopic image in microscale simultaneously. In order to estimate the absolute temperature, the thermal emission signal intensity at each temperature and each concentration need to be measured prior to the experiments as a calibration procedure, since the emissivity is directly depending on the concentration and temperature of each component. The developed system was applied to analyze the temperature distribution in the kinetic thermal phenomena such as the phase transition of the heat storage materials and the chemical reaction system such as the styrene radical polymerization. The anisotropic thermal diffusivity in the in-plane direction of polymer composite was also estimated using the photo-thermal method.

A new measuring system by using a high-speed infrared focal plane array (InSb) and an IR linear sensor array (MCT) was developed for the analysis of thermal interface and the microscopic visual two dimensional thermal analysis including the method for the measurement of thermal diffusivity in a plane. The advantage of this technique is ; (i) high-speed measurement, (ii) non-contact, (iii) two dimensional (2D) image, (iv) micro-scale spatial resolution, and (v) a direct observation of thermal interface.
The two dimensional high speed image of temperature distribution at a microscopic level is taken in a heating I cooling temperature scan and the temperature-time profiles of 65,000 picture elements are obtained at the same time. The potentials for the observation of instantaneous latent heat and the phase shift measurement with a.c. technique were examined..
The measurement of thermal wave propagating in the cross section of multi-layered composite materials including the thermal interfaces was performed by edge view observation of IR thermographs analyzed by the Fourier- transformed phase image. The phase jumps observed experimentally, indicated the presence of a thermal boundary resistance between each layer. This effect has been modelled by introducing thin surface skins of poor conductors (air, grease) among the layers. The numerical analysis allowed estimating the thickness of these skin layers of less than 3μm.

A methodology for the measurement of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity at the micro-scale interface of multi-layered materials were proposed by use of a temperature wave analysis and a high-speed micro-scale focal plane arrays. The advantage of this technique stands on the two-dimensional visual information with the more than ten thousands pixels of focal plane arrays of IR sensitive photo sensor. This method is applicable not only to determine the value of thermal conductivity or diffusivity but also to observe the two-dimensional anisotropy of thermal property of the materials.
In this study the technique was applied to the observation of thermal resistance at the interface of the multi-layer polymer films by using a temperature wave. This is a quite new application of infrared photographs to the quantification of thermal interface with a combination of a high speed IR-FPA with a microscopic lens. It visualized a phase image by inputting a temperature wave. The two-dimensional phase lock-in technique was applied to the evaluation of phase delay at the thermal interface with a spatial resolution of 7.5μm. At the positions of the first and the second interfaces between the polyimide films, for example, a large dropping down of the phase was observed, that was originated from the thermal resistance to the propagation of temperature wave in the thickness direction and a grease compound made it decreased. The relationship between the thermal conductivity of the grease compound and the phase shift at the interface was examined by the phase shift at the interface.
As an example, thermal diffusivity of electric polarized bi-axially stretched poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) films was measured by temperature wave analysis and its relationship with the structure and conformation was assessed by Fourier transform infrared(FTIR). Electric field in the thickness direction of the specimen up to 950 kV/cm was applied during heating and cooling treatment from 28 to 100℃. An orientation function was calculated from dichroic ratio of 1719 cm^<-1> band which is assigned to a permanent dipole of>C=O, shows an increasing orientation with the increase of polarization field. Thermal diffusivity of stretched PET film increases up to the duplicate value with the 950KV/cm impression. The possibility of controlling the thermal diffusivity by the electric polarization of side chains in the ordered state was clearly shown.
