A stable 12-phase AC arc was generated by transformers at a commercial electric power system, and the arc behavior was characterized by image analysis. For the unique advantages, the multiphase AC arc was developed to apply to in-flight glass melting for the purpose of energy-saving and emission reduction. The effects of electrode configuration and sheath gas flow rate on the arc and melting behavior of granulated glass raw material were investigated. Results show that the discharge behavior and the high-temperature region can be controlled by the electrode configuration. The luminance area of the high-temperature region and its fluctuation reflect the discharge behavior. The vitrification degree of glass raw material is mostly dependent on the center temperature of arc. As sheath gas flow rate increases, the ratio of luminance area decreases and the center temperature of arc increases.

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

The interaction of water and carbon dioxide with nanostructured epitaxial (Ba,Sr)TiO3 (001) thin film and bulk single crystal SrTiO3 (001) surfaces was studied using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and density functional theory (DFT).On both surfaces, XPS and TDS indicate D2O and CO2 chemisorb at room temperature with broad thermal desorption peaks (423-723 K) and a peak desorption temperature near 573 K. A comparison of thermal desorption Redhead activation energies to adsorption energies calculated using DFT indicates that defect surface sites are important for the observed strong adsorbate-surface reactivity. Numerical calculations of the competetive adsorption/desorption equilibria for H2O and CO2 on SrTiO3(001) surfaces show that for typical atmospheric concentrations of 0.038% carbon dioxide and 0.247% water vapor the surfaces are covered to a large extent with both adsorbates. The high desorption temperature indicates that these adsorbates have the potential to impact measurements of the electronic structure of BaTiO3−SrTiO3(001) surfaces exposed to air, or prepared in high vacuum deposition systems, as well as the electrical properties of thin film ATiO3-based devices.

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

A new technique is proposed for the fabrication of fine patterns of molecular doping in organic–inorganic hybrid materials by the combination of capillary electrophoresis doping (CED) and photolithography. The UV-induced polymerization of -C=C- bonds in organic groups yields a fine contrast of structures with the desired pattern in organic–inorganic hybrid films, and CED treatment introduces functional molecules only into unirradiated regions to form the doping patterns of molecules inside the films. The fine patterning of rhodamine-6G doping with from 2 to 4 μm resolution is demonstrated in hybrid films of 10 μm thickness.

Nano-ion-exchange lithography(NIEL) has been developed for the fabrication of nanometer-size structure with different refractive index in/or on the transparent glass substrate. A new glass composition suitable for NIEL has also been developed to give appropriate ionic conductivities of monovalent ions at certain elevated temperature, and multi-ion-exchanged layer has also developed ; a thin NH^+_4 containing and alkali-free layer with Ag^+ containing core layer underneath. The developed NIEL succeeded in the drawing nano-lines on glass ; thin Ag metal lines with 270nm width. This enables to develop new devices using "metamaterials".

Spherical Raman lasers and Nd^<3+>-doped lasers of multi-wavelength emission (50-100 wavelengths) were developed through the following techniques : (1) Terrace formation on the surface of high refractive-index glass spheres, (2) pumping and read-out by optical fiber couplers. Selection of pumping wavelength with a CW Ti : Sapphire laser enables us to find "the Raman enhancement effect" between Raman scattering and Nd^<3+> fluorescence. Using the optical fiber couplers and terrace microsphere, directional pumping and read-out will be possible.

Buried-type optical waveguide was fabricated in the oxide glass substrate by the ion-exchange treatment, and Ag+ ions in the core of the waveguide were extracted by the electric field from the contacted STM probe electrode. As a result, the optical gates with various sizes were prepared on the waveguide, and their appearance and the output efficiency of the propagating light in the waveguide were examined by atomic force microscope, and optical microscope, respectively. The extracted alkali ions, which are followed by the movement of Ag+ ions, were converted into metal droplet by the electrochemical reaction on the probe electrode, and etched the glass surface into the caldera shape, which reflects the electric field extending from the probe tip. FE-SEM analysis also showed that some parts of the extracted Ag+ ions were converted into the metallic state and form the nano-particles on the caldera surface. The light propagation experiment clearly showed that the light was emitted from the prepared optical gate by the treatment over 5 nC, and ensured that the prepared fine profiles of Ag+ ions from the core work well as the optical gate of the buried-type waveguide.
Micrometer-sized super-spherical glass particles were also fabricated using the glass with high refractive index by Surface-tension Mold (StM) technique. The temperature treatment was also optimized for the high refractive index glasses because they have relatively high crystallization tendency. The fabricated glass super-spheres were found to have smooth surface and good sphericity suitable for the optical resonator. Micrometer-size super-spheres containing optically active dopant ions were also prepared by StM technique. Laser excitation experiments of these micro-super spheres showed the oscillations based on the Whispering Gallery Modes with high Q-factor, and acted as a laser devises. They are confirmed to be applicable for the optical coupling with the optical gates on the buried-type optical waveguide prepared by the ion-exchange treatment using the electric field and SPM probes as an electrode.

Coating technique of organic-inorganic materials has been developed for cladding high refractive-index glass spheres. Liquid sol was coated on the glass spheres uniformly except one side, which was attached to the Teflon substrate, and then the cladding layer was solidified. The attached side showed the flat portion like a terrace structure, so we call them as 'Terrace Microspheres". When a pumping laser irradiates the terrace spit, the emission due to the stimulated Raman scattering was confirmed. Following results were obtained:
    (1) Terrace microspheres of various shaped terrace structures were prepared using capillary sol-supplier by a manipulator. The sol was prepared from organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Laser light pumping of terrace-microspheres was carried out to determine suitable sizes and properties of the terrace portion. The lowest threshold for stimulated Raman emission was 2mW.
    (2) Optical Coupling with High-Refractive-Index Glass Sphere (n D=193)
Fiber coupler was prepared by polishing a bending single-mode optical fiber followed by high-index film coating on the polished core part. A glass sphere was set of the polished core portico of the fiber-coupler and pumping was performed through laser light transmitting the fiber-coupler Glass sphere showed the stimulated Raman and photoluminescence emission (laser action) with a threshold of 2-5mW powers.
    (3) Rare earth Ion-Doped Super-spheres
Nd 3+ doped glass super spheres (n D,=1.5) were prepared and pimping demonstration using fiber-coupler was also carried out Lasing at 1.06 um wavelength was confirmed.

Ultra-high Quality factor (Q value) can be accomplished in a microsphere as optical cavity structure, thus in the cavity ultimate interaction between light and materials is achieved. The following results were obtained by this research.
    (1) Excitation of microsphere
    (a) Optical fiber coupler to a sphere was fabricated by abbreviation of bending single-mode optical fiber that was buried in a resin. High refractive index glass spheres (n_D=1.93) were set up on the coupler, and Resonant Raman scattering originated from optical fiber and glass sphere were observed.
    (b) Coating was carried out on the high-index glass sphere (n_D=1.93, diameter 30μm), and the terrace portion formed on the coating layer was dramatically increased the Raman scattering intensity. By this sphere, Stimulated Raman emission achieved.
    (2) Fabrication of nanoparticle-doped maicrospheres.

Multi-electrodes field-assisted ion exchange was applied to the preparation of optical waveguide in glass and the effects of the field gradient in glass by the multi-electrodes on the diffusion of Ag^+ ions were investigated. Photolithography technique was used to fabricate Ag fire for the core of the optical waveguide and Pt or Au thin films for the bias electrodes on Na/K mixed alkali silicate glass. DC50V was applied to Ag fire while the bias voltage at Pt or Au electrodes was changed from 0 to 500V. After the multi-electrodes field-assisted ion exchange at 300℃, the core profiles were analyzed using optical microscope, backscattering electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis method. With increasing bias bias voltage, the increment of the core width was decreased effectively. The electric field gradient under Ag fire was influenced largely by the filed form the bias electrode, and the diffusion of monovalent ions (Ag^+,Na^+,K^+) changed. The current conducting through Ag^+ wire showed a constant value while that through the bias electrodes was decrease gradually, because the alkali ions under the bias electrodes decreased with the treatment time. under Ag wire and control the diffusion of Ag^+ in glass. The use of the solid-state electrolyte to supply monovalent ions into the glass would be favorable to attain the fabrication of low-loss optical waveguide.

Organic-inorganic film of several micrometers in thickness has been investigated. The films fabricated by dipping technique showed the remarkable cellular patterns, when such reagents as Ti, Zr alkoxides and silane coupling agent having amino groups (aminopropyltrimethoxysilane : APTS) were involved in the starting sol.
In this investigation, to make clear the condition of on set of the cellular patterns, optical properties of the sol, observation of the film surfaces by laser microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been carries out. The results were summarized as follows,
    (1) Moisture in the atmosphere is inevitable for the onset of the cellular patterns.
    (2) Along with the hydration-polymerization reaction, nanometer-sized particles were formed in the starting sol and they were grown with increasing the reaction time.
    (3) The 3-D image of the cell was obtained by the AFM observation. The cell was composed of the valley center surrounded by the mountain- like wall of few nanometer 〜hundred of nanometer. There were the relations between their clearness and the depth.
    (4) The formation mechanism of the cell in the hybrid film is : the first step is nanometer-sized particles (TiO_2, ZrO_2 or SiO_2 nanoparticles) generation in the starting sol, the second step is the flow of these nanoparticles by the Marangoni convection.

In order to develop functional glasses which are not obtainable by an ordinary glass preparation process, Na^+ ions in oxide glasses of Na_2O-Al_2O_3-SiO_2 system were replaced by Ag^+ or Na^+ ions by ion-exchange technique and the properties of the resulting glasses were discussed in relation to structural alteration induced by the ion-exchange. The Cu^+ ion introduced by Cu^+/Na^+ ion-exchange was turned out to remain mono-valent by XPS measurement, but its oxygen coordination number determined by EXAFS measurement increased from 2, which is typical of cuprous ion, to 4 which is typical of cupric ion. Thus, the high electrical couductivity and extremely low glass transition temperature of Cu^+/Na^+ ion-exchanged glasses were attributed to this structural change leading to the increase in oxygen coordination number of Cu^+ ion. In the case of Ag^+/Na^+ ion-exchange, on the other hand, no remarkable structural change was recognized by the measurement of neither ^<29>Si MAS NMR spectra and ^<27>Al MAS NMR spectra. However, the peak position of vibration spectrum obtained by IR and Raman spectroscopy shifted toward the longer wavelength side as the ion-exchange advanced, suggesting that the introduced Ag^+ ions occupy non-bridging oxygen site first, and then occupy the charge compensating site near four-fold Al^<3+> ion after the former sites were fully occupied. Based on these considerations, it was concluded that a glass of very high electrical conductivity is obtainable by Ag^+/Na^+ ion-exchange for a glass free from non-bridging oxygen.

This work has been done for the investigation of the effect of the melting at low temperature on the quality of glass. The low temperature process has been desired in order to save the energy for the fabrication of the glass products, and also to suppress the emission of carbon dioxide produced by the combustion of fossil fuels to attain high temperature condition in the melting tank. However, low temperature melting causes the depression of fining effect of the glass melts, resulting the glass containing a large amount of bubbles inside.
In this study, the direct current electrochemical treatment (DCEC) has been applied on the glass melts at 1200-1300℃, which is 200℃ lower than the melting temperature, and the effect on the fining of the glass has been investigated. The application of 1.35DCV on soda-lime-silica glass melt through the Pt electrodes caused the continuous formation of bubbles with a large mean diameter about 1mm on anode. The bubbles ascended at a high speed about 1mm/min, and form the bubble layer on the melt surface. They also induced the convection in the melts. DCEC on the glass melts containing a large amount of fine bubbles (diameter<0.5mm) decreased the bubbles in the glass mostly within 1h-treatment, while the melting without DCEC could not remove the bubbles at all. DCEC was also found to have the effect of the redox control of transition metal ions in the melts. It could decolorize the glass effectively clue to the shift of the redox of metal ions, Fe^<2+> →Fe^<3+>, From these results, DCEC treatment was considered to be a promising new process solving the problems which are caused by the lowering of the melting temperature.

Lasing from a dye-doped microsphere was performed from the coupling between fluorescent dye molecules and morphology-dependent-resonances. Using phenyl triethoxy silane (PTES) as a starting material, I made Rhodamine 6G-doped spherical particles of organic-inorganic hybrid material by sol-gel technique. From the particles of 4-6 mm in diameter, a strong laser emission at 598 nm wavelength was confirmed by pumping a pulse laser light of 532 nm wavelength.
Since particle size control, good circularity, smooth surface are required for the spherical cavity structure, in this study, the formation techniques for preparing spherical particles have been investigated. Processing steps for preparing dye-doped particles are consisted of two major processes ; (1) Hydrolysis and polymerization of PTES, and (2) Solidification of liquid droplets. For the second process two elaborate techniques to make dye-doped microspheres were developed : (a) Emulsion technique in liquid phase, (b) Vibrating orifice technique in gas phase. Especially the vibrating orifice technique enables us to obtain monodispersed microspheres of optical cavity structure.

The formation of thick silicate glass film for a planer wavegide has been studied by an interfacial polymerization focusing on the conditions to reduce the sintering temperature of a gel film. The mechanism of gel film formation from ethylsilicate precursor at the existence of various kinds of catalyst was investigated in the first year. The nucleation and growth of silica particles comprising the film proceeded in the organic phase immediately above the interface, showing that a base catalyst having a high solubility such as triethylamine is effective. The size of particles comprising the film was, however, too large to be applied to a film formed on a silicon substrate, suggesting that the addition of boron or germanium was necessary to reduce the sintering temperature. The gel film formation from a precursor prepared from tetramthoxysilane and trimethylborate was investigated in the second year in order to reduce the sintering temperature of the film. A good reproducibility of composition and thickness was obtained for the gel formed using triethylamine as a catalyst. The film of SiO_2-B_2O_3 system was sintered to a pore free glass film at 1100゜C,which is low enough for the application to the planer waveguide on silicon substrate.

In orter to develop a solid state tunable laser based on the blue emission of the wavelength near 450mm from Cu+ions, the conditions for the preparation of calcium phosphate glass containing copper ions only in the cuprous state has been established. A copper containing glass melted in an ambient atmosphere was pulverized and sealed in a silica glass ampule under vacuum together with silicon powder, and then re-melted at 1100oC for 72h. The optimum Si/Cu ratio to obtain a homogeneous glass with Cu+ions was in the vicinity of 0.25. The introduction of too much amount of silicon resulted in the formation of colloid of CuO, while small amount of silicon below Si/Cu=0.25 was not sufficient to reduce cupric ions formed during the melting under ambient atmosphere. The examination of the gain by the stimulated emission from the prepared Cu+-containing glass was carried out on a rectangular glass sample of 3mm wide, 3mm hihg and 15mm in length having three surfaces finished in the optical flat using FHG emission of Nd-YAG laser as pumping light and Ar-Ion laser beam as a probe, respectively. It turned out by the test that the irradiation of a strong UV light of FHG emission of Nd-YAG laser leads to the formation of defects in the glass, which resulted in the hindrance of the gain of the emission due to oxidation of cuprous ions into cupric state. The formation of such defects could be reduced by reducing non-bridging oxygen in the glass by replacing a part of calcium by aluminum, which lead to conclusion that the preparation of a glass without non-bridging oxygen is essential to the fabrication of a solid state tunable laser using Cu+. The suggested glass to meet this condition is in the mixed system of boro-phosphate and alumino-phosphate.

Glasses containing quantum-size metal particles can exibit a large nonlinear optical susceptibility, X^<(3)>, with ultra fast speed of nsec - psec. They are currently at the forefront reseaech for photonic switches in optical communication and optical computing. This research has been dedicated to prepare high-content Ag_2O-doped glass substrates and subsequently demonstrate precipitation of quantum-size particles by ion irradiation of 10-20keV ion energy.
Because of good chemical durability and easy Ag ion doping, P_2O_5-Al_2O_3-Ag_2O(Ag_2O=10-20 mol %) were chosen as glass substrate materials. Ion irradiation such as N_2^+, Ar^+ with relatively low energy can precipitate high concentration of the quantum-sized Ag particles near the glass surface. Their sizes were estimated directly by FE-SEM,and from the data of the intensity and shape of the plasma absorption peak at the wavelength of 420 nm.
To measure the X^<(3)> value, the Ag particle concentration should increase. Thus, appropriate glass composition was searched : P_2O_5-Al_2O_3-Ag_2O (15-20mol %) -Na_2O (15-20mol %) glasses were successfully found and resulted in the two times concentration as large as that of non-Na_2O glasses. At 450 nm wavelength, by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) with a short pulsu laser, X^<(3)> of 5.5-8.8*10^<-7> esu was estimated from these samples. Precise control of particle size by the technique is in progress.

For the purpose of obtaining nonlinear optical glasses with high third order non-linear susceptibility, the preparation of sodium-borosilicate glasses containing a large number of spherical semiconductor particles of diameter about 10nm by sol-gel process has been elaborated.
The optimum temperature of the treatment of gels for the oxidation of cadmium acetate precursor to cadmium oxide was in the range 400゜-420゜C.The most suitable temperature for the treatment by hydrogen sulfide to CdO into CdS was found in the range 120゜-150゜C.The nonlinear susceptibility of the glass prepared under these conditions was much higher than those of glasses prepared in the previous study.
The preparation of PbS-doped nonlinear optical glasses by sol-gelprocess has benn conducted fucusing the control of particle size distridution of precursor lead silicate gels in a saturated aqueous solution of lead acetate at 40゜C and cooling down to 30゜C, followed by the treatment of the gel with acetone. The size distribution of thus formed lead acetate particles was quite narrow and remained unchanged by the subsequent treatments for the conversion into lead oxide and sulfide, suggesting that the size distribution of CdS particle, and therefore the nonlinear susceptibility of CdS-doped glasses, can befurther improved by applying the similar mathod to gels of cadmium acetate system.

Electronic Structure of a-In_2Se_3 was examined by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy with syncrotron orbil radiation as an excitation light. It was found that a-In_<>Se_3 has almost identical valence band structure with crystalline In_2Se_3. The valence band is composed of Se 4p nonbonding band, Se 4p-In 5p p-p sigma bonding band, Se 4p-In 5s p-s sigma bonding band and Se 4s core band from the top. In the excitation spectrum of photoconduction in a-In_2Se_3 a small peak was observed at about 0.7eV in addition to the large peak at a wavelength equivalent to the band gap. These observations support the model proposed on the basis of tight binding energy band that tetrahedrally coordinated In and Se produce the above mentioned valence band structure and octahedrally coordinated In atoms, which are a minor component, constitute a pseudoconduction band in the band gap of the tetrahedrally coordinated in atoms. The pseudoconduction band was found to act as a conduction band in a-In_2Se_3. This results in the anomalous low activation energy for electrical conduction observed for the amorphous chalcogenides.
A large mobility of an electron in the conduction band mostly constructed by ns atomic orbitals of p-block cations is well established in the above mentioned experiments. The third order nonlinear susceptibility of a-SnO_2 and a-In_2O_3 was estimated by the third harmonic generation method under a working hypothesis that the high mobility is effective for the high susceptibility. The susceptibility values of 5X10^<-12> esu and 1X10^<-12> esu were found for a-SnO_2 and a-In_2O_2, respectively. The working hypothesis was found to be effective in searching a new material with the high susceptibility.
