    <p>Binary Al-Mn, ternary Al-Mn-Fe and Al-Mn-Si alloys were prepared by different cooling rates during solidification using direct chill-casting and high-speed twin-roll casting. Mn concentration and solute distribution in Al matrix were examined. The Mn concentration in solid solution was considered almost equivalent in as-cast condition. In contrast, much amount of decomposition of supersaturated Mn in solid solution occurred in high-speed twin-roll cast alloys after homogenization. In high-speed twin-roll cast strips, fine distribution of constituent particles in Al-Mn-Fe alloy and homogeneous solute distribution in Al matrix in Al-Mn-Si alloy were obtained due to the high cooling rate of the high-speed twin-roll casting. After homogenization treatment, coarsening and spheroidization of the constituent particles were mainly observed in Al-Mn-Fe alloy, while formation of fine dispersoids was predominantly observed in Al-Mn-Si alloy. Such differences in microstructure resulted from the decomposition behavior of supersaturated Mn in solid solution.</p>

    A vertical-type tandem twin-roll caster is able to produce three-layer clad strips from molten metal directly. Three Al-Si alloys (10%Si, 12.6%Si, 14%Si) were used as the overlay alloy to clad the A3003 base alloy. The effects of Si composition on the solidification manner of the overlay and bonding conditions of the base/overlay interface were investigated to examine whether high Si composition brazing sheets can be fabricated by subsequent cold rolling. Regardless of the Si composition, the microstructure of the overlay consisted of an α-Al phase and eutectic phase from the surface to the mid-central region in the thickness direction. This is due to the high cooling rates, which promotes the shift of the coupled zone. On the other hand, the microstructure of the overlay close to the interface of the base strip was not uniform along the casting direction. An α-Al rich region and eutectic-rich region was observed intermittently. The local difference in α-Al ratio was due to the compressive and shear forces generated by the roll rotation. At the base/overlay interface, no un-bonded area was observed in 10%Si, but local un-bonded areas were observed for 12.6%Si and 14%Si. From the EBSD analysis, the orientations of the base and overlay crystal were equivalent at the bonded area. This indicates that heterogeneous nucleation of the overlay alloy took place on the base alloy strip surface. Thus, solidification of the overlay on the base strip surface is the one of the important factors promoting strong base/overlay bonding. A local un-bonded area at the base/overlay interface and dispersion of fine primary Si particles were observed for 12.6 and 14%Si. Regardless of this, cold rolling of these clad strips was successful without any fracture. This implies that the Si composition range applicable for the overlay of the brazing sheet can be expanded by vertical-type tandem twin-roll casting.

    4045/3003/4045 aluminum alloy clad sheets having the same thickness (6.0 mm) and clad ratio (12%) were fabricated both by hot roll-bonding and vertical-type high-speed tandem twin-roll casting. The clad sheets were cold-rolled to 0.17 mm in thickness, annealed at 400°C for 2 h, cold-rolled to 0.10 mm in thickness and finally subjected to heat treatment for brazing at 600°C for 3 min. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the clad sheets were investigated in each stage. Al–Mn dispersoid particles in the core (A3003) and Si particles in the overlay (A4045) of the cold-rolled sheet with 0.17 mm thickness originating from the twin-roll casting were smaller than those originating from the hot roll-bonding. Interfaces between the core and the overlay were clearly observed in the twin-roll casting sheets. A fully recrystallized structure was observed after annealing in the sheet originating from the hot roll-bonding, while the fibrous structure still remained in the sheet originating from the twin-roll casting. Yield strength, tensile strength and elongation of the annealed sheet originating from the twin-roll casting were higher than those originating from the hot roll-bonding. After heat treatment for brazing, the tensile strength was the same in both clad sheets.

    A high speed twin roll caster is able to cast an aluminum alloy strip directly from a molten metal at high casting speed. However burrs at edges of the cast strip occurred depending on used aluminum alloy. It is the special problem, which a conventional twin roll caster didn't have. Burrs damages side-dam plate used in a high speed twin roll caster. In addition, it may affect down-stream process. We predicted that burrs are rerating to flowability at semi-solidification. In this study, we adjusted side-dam plate lower end position at the casting, and investigated relationship between occurrence position of the burrs and amount of the Si. Additionally, it was added hole drilling for eliminating the burrs. We used AA6061, AC4CH, ADC12, Al-25%Si. As a result, occurrence positions of the burrs were different depending on amount of the Si. The Side-dam plate with the hole was possible to eliminate the burrs.

    A roll caster for making the five layers clad strip was devised. In this process, three twin roll casters were set at the vertical tandem position. This vertical type tandem twin roll caster was assembled. Five layers clad strip can be cast directly from the molten metals by the vertical type tandem twin roll caster. First layer was cast by the first caster (upper caster). Second layers were cast by the second caster (mid caster). Third layers were cast by the third caster (lower caster). Procedure of casting to make five layers clad strip is as below. First layer was cast by first caster. This layer was drawn into second caster. When first layer went into the roll-bite of the second caster, the molten metal of second layers was poured to second caster. This three layers clad strip was drawn into third caster. When this three layers clad strip went into the roll-bite of the second caster, the melting of third layers was poured to third caster. In this study, two kinds of five layers clad strips were tried by this caster. One of 3003 aluminum alloy was used for first and second layers, and 4045 aluminum alloy was used for third layers. The other of 3003 aluminum alloy was used for first layer, and AC4C aluminum alloy was used for second layers, and 4045 aluminum alloy was used for third layers. Two kinds of five layers clad strips could be cast by this caster. The interfaces of five layers clad strips were clear and flat.

    A single roll caster equipped with a scraper (SRCES) was devised in order to improve the free solidified surface. The scraper contacted to the free solidified surface at the constant force. The some amount of semisolid layer on the solid layer was removed and the surface became flat. The scraper was made from the mild steel plate. The mild steel plate was covered by the insulator paper to prevent the cooling of the melt. The melt pool was made on the roll by the side dam plates, back dam plate and the scraper. Therefore, a tip or a nozzle was not needed. In this study, AA6022 and AA5182 aluminum alloy were cast by SRCES. The scraped surface condition of the strip cast by SRCES was investigated. The free solidified surface was flat. The as-cast strip could be cold rolling. The free solidified surface could be cold-rolled and the roughness was reduced. The mechanical properties of cast strip were investigated by the 180 degrees bending test. There was no difference between the roll contact surface and the free solidified surface after cold rolling. This result showed that the free solidified surface could be improved up to the roll contact surface by the scraper and cold rolling. Furthermore, in this study, the scraper was applied to a twin roll caster. The aluminum alloy clad strip was cast by twin roll caster equipped with a scraper. Interface of the clad strip was connected and clear.

    Two kinds of roll casters to cast the aluminum alloy clad strip were invented. One was a vertical tandem type twin roll caster and the other was an unequal diameter type roll caster. Three layers of clad strips were able to be cast by these roll casters. The three layers clad strip, of which the temperature of the liquidus line of the base strip was higher than that of the overlay strip, could be cast by the vertical tandem type roll caster. When the temperature of the liquidus line of the base strip was lower than that of the overlay strip, the unequal diameter type roll caster was used to cast the three layers clad strip. The interfaces between the strips were clear and the layer of the diffusion of the element was very thin. The clad strip was not peeled off at the interface by the bending and the cold rolling. The strips were connected strictly. The casting of the strip and the cladding of the strips could be operated simultaneously by one caster.

    Roll casting of AC4C aluminum alloy was tried using an unequal diameter twin roll caster. This caster was equipped with a lower roll of 1000mm in diameter and an upper roll of 300mm in diameter. A cooling slope was used to make semi solid slurry. The casting speed was 20m/min, and thickness of AC4C strip was 4.5mm. The AC4C strip could be cold rolled down to 1.0mm without homogenization. Rolled and T4 heat treated AC4C strip was not broken in 180 degree bending test (R=0.5), and limiting drawing ratio of 2.0 was obtained.

    Strip casting of A6061 alloy was tried using a vertical type twin roll caster with 1500mm of diameter rolls. Use of copper rolls, non-use of lubricant, and low load contributed to improve the cooling rate and casting speed of the strip. A6061 alloy could be cast into the strip continuously at the speed of 60m/min. The microstructure was very fine. It's could be cold-rolled without homogenization to 1mm. A6061 strip could be bent 180 degrees without occurrence of crack at the outer surface or breaking.

    Semisolid strip casting of aluminum alloy was tried using a vertical type twin roll caster equipped with a cooling nozzle and a cooling slope. The solid fraction rate was raised by the cooling nozzle and the cooling slope. The cooling nozzle and the cooling slope were effective the increase the thickness of the strip.     Semi-solid roll casting of AC4C was tried using an unequal diameter twin roll caster. Character of this caster was long solidification length (300mm). This caster was equipped with a lower roll of 1000mm in diameter and an upper roll of 250mm in diameter. A cooling slope was used to make semi solid slurry. The casting speed was 20m/min, and thickness of strip was 4.5mm. The strip could be cooled rolled down to 0.5mm with out homogenization. Rolled and T4 heat treated strip, which thickness was 0.75mm, could be bent at 180 degrees with out broken.

    In recycling of aluminum alloy, deterioration of mechanical properties occurs by effect of impurities. There are many way of improvement of effect of impurities. For example, it is reducing of size of impurities by rapid solidification. Roll caster has high cooling ability. Roll caster is suitable for reducing of size of impurities. In present study, roll casting of Al alloy added Fe as impurities was tried. Cast ability, surface condition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the strips were investigated.

    A twin roll caster of vertical type with 1500 diameter rolls was designed and assembled to cast an aluminum alloy strip. Strip casting of 6016 (0.16%Fe) and impurity -Fe added 6016 (0.45%Fe) was attempted using this caster. Both 6016 (0.16%Fe) and 6016 (0.45%Fe) could be cast into the strip continuously at the speed of 60m/min. Use of copper rolls and non-use of lubricant contributed to improvement of the cooling rate and casting speed of the strip. The thickness of the strip was 3.4mm. The microstructure was very fine. The as-cast strip could be cold-rolled without homogenization down to 1mm. The T4-heat treated strip of 6016 (0.16%Fe) and A6016 (0.45%Fe) could be bent 180 degrees without breaking. There was no influence of Fe content on bending-ability. Bending-ability of the strip was improved by rapid solidification of the twin roll caster in the present study. The twin roll caster in the present study was useful for decreasing the influence of impurity Fe.

    6061 aluminum alloy and model material of recycled 6061 aluminum alloy with increased Fe were cast into strips at a speed of 0.5m/s using an unequal diameter twin roll caster. The Fe content of 6061 aluminum alloy and the model material of recycled 6061 aluminum alloy was 0.36mass% and 0.59mass%, respectively. Ripple marks, which are typical surface defect of roll cast strips, did not occur on the surface of both as-cast strips. Fe content did not influence the surface condition of the roll-east-strip. The as-cast strip was cold rolled down to 1mm, T4 heat treatment was conducted, and then subjected to π rad (180°) bending test. The result π rad (180°) bending test shows that roll cast 6061 aluminum alloy and 6061 aluminum alloy with increased Fe as recycled material had the same bending ability as that of roll-cast 6022 aluminum alloy. In the strip casting by the twin roll caster of the present study, increased Fe content did not influence the results of the π rad (180°) bending test.

    In recycling of Al alloys, deterioration of mechanical properties occurs by effect of impurities. Reducing of size of impurities by rapid solidification prevents deterioration of mechanical properties. Twin roll caster has high cooling ability. Twin roll caster is suitable for reducing size of impurities. 6111 alloy, to which Fe was added as impurity, was cast at a speed of 60m/min using a high speed twin roll caster. The Fe content ranged from 0.2mass% to 1.5mass%. Cast ability, surface condition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the strip was investigated.

    An unequal diameter twin roll caster was adopted in the strip casting of aluminum alloy. This caster allowed easy start of casting, high speed roll casting, second cooling and casting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy strip. Al-20%Si alloy, which has wide freezing zone, could be cast into the strip continuously at the speed of 20m/min. Primary Si was very fine by the effect of excellent cooling ability. The diameter of the large roll (lower roll) was 1000mm, and that of smaller roll (upper roll) was 250mm. The nozzle of this caster was assembled from 4 pieces of plates, and the attachment of the nozzle to the caster was very easy.

    Mutual relationship among welding conditions, joint interface morphologies of dissimilar metals and their joint strength was investigated by using both experimental and numerical analyses. The numerical analysis combining an impact analysis and a thermal analysis was effective to reproduce the material distribution (mixing behavior of two metals) at the collision point, abrupt and sharp increase in pressure and temperature at the joint interface, and a rapid cooling behavior at the joint interface due to the thermal diffusion after the collision. The reproduced joint interface morphology by the simulation showed a good quantitative agreement with that of the experimentally obtained dissimilar metal joint interface. These results indicate that the approach used in the present study was useful to reveal the formation mechanism of the magnetic pulse welded interface and establish the optimum welding condition for producing strong and reliable dissimilar metal joints.

    In the prsent study, the explosive weding process, a kind of impact welding process, was divided into five processes. The welding behavior was investigated by using the coupled numerical analyses combining three models.The wavy interface morphology formed at the joint interface and the location of intermediate layer (IML) reproduced by simulation showed a good quantitative agreement with the experimental results. The estimated cooling rate at the joint interface was also reasonable to explain the microstructure and the evolution of non-equilibrium phase after welding.
    The newly devised simulation models in the present study were effective to reveal the formation mechanism of characteristic joint interface morphology and IML. This suggests that the control of the interface morphology, reduction of the amount of IML and non-equilibrium phase, and improvement of mechanical properties of the impact welded dissimilar metal joints can be achieved by using the simulation results.

    Metal jet emission and weld interface formation in impact welding were investigated for dissimilar metal lap joints. Numerical simulation of oblique collision between metal plates was performed using smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) method for various plate thicknesses, collision velocities, and collision angles. Metal jet emission and formation of the characteristic wavy weld interface in impact welding were reproduced successfully. The composition of the metal jet was governed by the degree of relative density difference between two metals. Several types of lap joints were fabricated by magnetic pulse welding(MPW). Experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.

    It is over 20 years since FeMnSi is found to show a good shape memory effect(SME) by γ【tautomer】ε martensitic transformation. The SME is improved significantly in comparison with the SMA observed in stainless steel single crystals by avoiding formation of a phase. This is due to the difficulty of the non-basal slip in the ε phase, especially in absence of the additional ε→α transformation. After accumulation of sufficient knowledge, a hybrid alloy of FeMnSiCr was used as a pipe joint in tunnel construction for the first time in the world in 2003. The recovery strength of the alloy used was in the range 150〜200 MPa. The present study was started to improve the strengthening of the SMA further by means of beating and heating, and succeeded to increase the recovery strength to the level as high as 450 MPa by introduction of hardly deformable domains. The subject was extended to clarify its contribution to the pseudo elasticity. Dispersion of the hardly deformable domains apparently increased the internal stress as well as the pseudo elasticity. The latter contributes to the dumping energy in vibration. The hardly deformable phase contributing to the strengthening is identified to be a bcc based ordered structure of I 4^^-3m by means of ZOLZ and FOLZ diffraction analyses and is the one called x -phase. This phase itself is found to be not deformable over a few GPa by the present semi-in-situ compression experiments. It is, thus, confirmed that the FeMnSi based SMA can be strengthened significantly by such a dispersion hardening which balances against the chemical force due to the phase change.

    Strain-controlled cyclic deformation tests for pure Cu, Cu alloys, A1 and A1 alloys (mostly single crystals) were conducted. Although the crystal structure of these metals and alloys are all fcc, the fatigue behavior was quite different. For example, pure Cu showed cyclic hardening to saturation, whereas pure Al showed hardening followed by distinct softening. Observation of dislocation microstructure has revealed that the PSB ladder structure develops in Cu and it is absent in Al. Through extensive investigation, it has been found that the differences in both the fatigue behavior and microstructure can be explained by the relative feasibility of cross slip that is determined by the magnitude of stacking fault energy. Furthermore, from experiments using a Cu-Fe alloy with dispersed small Fe precipitate particles in Cu, it has been found that the Fe particles are effective in preventing the development of fatigue dislocation structure. With this knowledge, dislocation structure diagrams that indicate fatigue dislocation structure as a function of size and distribution of second-phase particles were successfully constructed.
    Dislocation structures developed during fatigue tests are found to be much more stable (both thermally and mechanically) compared with those developed after cold rolling. Owing to the to-and-fro motion during cyclic deformation, dislocations arrange themselves into an energetically stable configuration resulting in the formation of characteristic fatigue microstructures that eventually lead to fatigue failure.
    In conclusion, we could obtain various new results and findings, most of which are very valuable for life assessment of structural materials.

    Trade-off balancing between strength and toughness has been systematically investigated in alloys having brittle an intermetallic phase in a ductile matrix or having a ductile phase within the brittle intermetallic matrix. The systems investigated include Nb-Si base alloy, Fe-base ferritic alloys, an austenitic Fe-Mn-Al-C alloys, Cu-alloys and an Al-Fe alloy. The Nb-Si alloys consist of brittle Nb_5Si_3 and a ductile Nb solid solution phase in a mixed lamellar morphology, which is a candidate material for ultra-high temperature application such as components in gas-turbine engines. Both high temperature strength and room temperature toughness of the alloy depend on the morphology and spacings of the lamellar microstructure. A method for optimization of trade-off properties has been successfully suggested with a consideration on the toughening mechanism by the ductile phase in a brittle matrix.
    Similar investigation was made in the Fe-Cr base ferritic alloys in which the Laves phase is the strengthening agent, and also in Fe-Mn-Al-C in which the strengthening is achieved by the precipitation of E2_1-type intermetallic compound. In both cases change in morphology of the brittle phase in relation to the crystallographic orientation and misfit between two-phases control the strength and toughness, or ductility of the alloys.
    The present work successfully provides many valuable basic information on the microstructure-mechanical properties of advance metallic materials that helps in designing the alloys for various structural applications.

    合計6回の委員会を開催した。第一回委員会において、関連する最近の国内外の論文、総説、その他の出版物、国際会議録などの資料を収集して調査研究を進めるとの基本方針を確認した。各種資料を広範に収集するために9人の委員で分担を決めて資料収集・整理に当たることにした。資料収集・整理を柔軟かつ効率的に行うために費用の支出法を当初のそれから変更して各委員に当該費用を予め配分すると共に、対象をベースメタル全般に拡大して調査研究を行うことにした。調査研究の結果の概要は以下の通りである。
    深刻化しつつある地球環境劣化をまねいた事への反省から、地球温暖化防止やオゾン層の破壊防止など、地球環境保全を前提とした特続可能発展を目指す社会の構築が提唱されるようになってきたが、その実現には各種のパラダイムシフトが必要不可欠である。環境負荷の大きい金属材料では環境負荷低減が望まれており、1993年から5年間エコマテリアルプロジェクトを推進してきた金材研のホームページにはLCAを適用したケーススタディの結果例なども掲載されている。一方製品設計でも環境配慮設計が提唱されるようになり、インバースマニュファクチャリングやライフサイクルデザインなどの概念も輩出するようになっている。材料側でもこのような状況に積極的に対応して意識革命と積極的な情報発信が必要であり、「循環型金属材料の創製」に取り組む事が時代の要請であると結論された。そのためには環境負荷の大きい元素を含まない単純組成合金をプロセス制御によって特性を改善して提供し、繰り返しリサイクルを図ることが望まれている。産業界でも意識改革を行い、野放図に増殖してきた多くの汎用金属材料の統合・簡素化を図りながら、循環型金属材料の創製に向けて段階的ではあっても、改善にむけての歩みを着実に進めていくことが循環型社会構築には必要不可欠であるう。

    結晶粒の微細化や複雑な変形組織の導入は材料の強度を向上する方法としては最も一般的で効果的である。そこで本研究では鉄基形状記憶合金の高強度化を目指して種々の実験を試み、以下に述べるような結果を得た。
    ・液体急冷法により作製した薄膜試料では、B添加により結晶粒が数μm以下に微細化し、高強度が得られ、ほとんどの結晶粒で単一バリアントのhcp相が観察され、このことが良い形状記憶能を示す原因と考えられる。ただし、得られた試料はリボン状であるため、その用途に制約がある。
    ・微細粒材料のバルク化を計る簡便な方法として、強加工と加熱による結晶粒の微細化がある。本研究では、溶解・鋳造・熱間圧延・冷間圧延・加熱の行程を経て数μmの微細粒から〜0.1mm程度にわたる種々の粒径のFe-30Mn-6Si-7Cr-1Ni(mss%)合金を得て、ホール・ペッチ則に従って強度が増加する事を確かめた。そして、形状記憶の程度は薄膜試料のように完全ではないが、締め具として使える程度の形状回復が得られることを確かめた。
    ・高強度化によりその機能を向上させるもう一つの試みとして、高速変形による組織の微細化を計った。重りの自由落下による高速変形(ひずみ速度:3x10^3)及びビュレットの射出による高速変形(ひずみ速度:3x10^4)の後、昇温中に加重を負荷して復元力を測定したところ、高速で変形したものほど強い締め付け力が得られることを見い出した。

    To get a better understanding of the enviromental influence on fatigue, a study has been undertaken on the fatigue crack growth in various kinds of gaseous environments. Constant load amplitude fatigue crack growth tests were performed in titanium, 8090Al-Li alloys and Fe-3%Si alloys under laboratory air with controlled humidity, nitrogen, argon and vacuum. Increased fatigue crack growth rates were obtained in any gaseous environments compared to that for the vacuum condition. Constant DELTAK fatigue crack growth tests were also performed for the 8090 Al-Li alloys under the controlled laboratory air condition to evaluate the effect of water vapor on the fatigue crack growth. The relative humidity (RH) of the laboratory air were systematically changed in the range of 0.01% to 40%. Fatigue crack growth rates were increased as increase in the relative humidity. However, the increase was observed in the range of 0.01% to 30%RH,and over the 30%RH the crack growth rates were unchanged. No crack delamination was observed in the vacuum condition. Precise observation and quantitative evaluation of the fatigue surface morphology of Fe-3%Si alloys have been made using an STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope). Further experimental research using AFM is strongly required in order to evaluate the environmental effects on the fatigue crack initiation and growth.

    材料の開発は高強度材料から高信頼性材料へと移行している。ここで問題となっているのは、繰り返し荷重あるいは温度変化に伴う材料の疲労劣化と破壊である。特に疲労き裂に関しては、その伝播機構が未だ充分に解明されていない。この原因は、疲労き裂先端の極微小な領域で生じる塑性変形が材料表面でしか測定できない点にある。本研究は、き裂内部の極微小な領域で生じる塑性変形を直接観察する方法を開発し、疲労き裂の伝播機構を考察することを目的として行われた。
    溶液中、定電位で不動態化している金属に塑性変形を与えると、不動態皮膜に覆われていない金属の面が生成し、この面は急速に不動態化し、分極電流が観察される。本研究では、音響学で用いられる原波形解析の手法を応用した波形解析ソフトウェアを作製し、観察される分極電流を解析した。これにより、従来測定できなかったき裂先端で起きる微小な塑性変形の量を実時間で定量化することが可能となった。この手法を用いて、純チタンで疲労き裂伝播試験を行い、負荷荷重の変化に伴って起きる塑性変形量の変化を測定し、従来より提案されている疲労き裂伝播機構のモデルと比較した。従来のモデルのうち最も有力視されているものの一つにき裂先端でふたつのすべり系が交互に働くモデルがある。しかし、このモデルによって予想されるき裂開口量に対する塑性変形量の変化と、今回実際に測定された塑性変形量の変化とは異なっていることが明らかとなった。このことより、き裂先端でふたつのすべり系が交互に働くだけではなく、別の塑性変形がき裂先端付近で起きていることが見いだされた。このことは、従来提案されている疲労き裂伝播モデルでは定量的に示されておらず、疲労き裂伝播モデルに新たな方向を示すものである。

    一般に、金属材料表面に軟質層が存在すると、疲労き裂発生が容易となり、疲労寿命が低下する。しかし、金属材料の表面にソフトなメタル層(延性に富み、使用温度で再結晶が可能で加工硬化しない層)を意図的にコーティングする場合には、この軟質層が、負荷を担う被コーティング材(母材)に生じた新生面の大気露出を防止し、疲労き裂発生を遅延させる効果をもつことが期待される。これは、従来の材料表面の強度を上げることにより疲労き裂発生を防ごうとする概念とは全く異なった耐疲労性向上のための方策と言える。本研究は、ソフトメタルコート材を試作し、ソフトメタルコーティング効果の実験的検証を行なうことを目的とする。
    炭素鋼、ステンレス鋼(2種類)、高力アルミニウム合金、純チタン、チタン合金の6種類の金属材料の表面に真空蒸着法を用いてソフトメタルであるインジウムをコーティングした。コーティング後の試料表面について走査型電子顕微鏡観察ならびにX線マイクロアナライザーを用いた組成の定量測定を行なった結果、純チタン材で最も良好なコーティング状態が得られることが明らかとなった。そこで純チタン材のラウンドノッチ付4点まげ疲労試験片を作成し、ノッチ部にインジウムを蒸着してソフトメタルコート材を試作した。ソフトメタルコート材ならびに比較材としてコーティングなしの試験片について応力振幅一定の条件で曲げ疲労試験を行ない、破断までの繰り返し数を求め、得られたS-N曲線を比較検討した。応力振幅が大きく、破断までの繰り返し数が小さい領域では、ソフトメタルコーティングによる疲労寿命の増加は見られなかった。ソフトメタルコーティングの効果が期待できる繰り返し数が10^6回を越える高サイクル領域について現在試験を継続中である。

    KISCC(応力腐食割れ臨界応力拡大係数)は厳しい環境下での構造物の機械的機能を保証する指標とし重要な値である。その物理的意味は確立しているが、統計的バラツキと時間に依存する因子を含むため、この値を高精度に求めるためには過大な設備労力と時間が必要とされるのが現状である。KISCCを高効率にに求める方法を開発して、十分な量のKISCC試験の実行可能にして厳しい境下で用いられる構造物や機械要素の安全を確保することをこの研究の目的とした。本機の試作の成果を検証するためには長時間計測が必要であり、循環系及び計測系をを整備し、長時間安定に関する各種の検討実験を行った。無人計測系の整備は市販ソフト及び研究室開発ソフトによて行っているが、一長一短があり、目的とした市販パソコン程度の機器による信頼性の高い汎用手法の確立がまだなされていない。極微電圧の計測に用いるアナログ回路のノイズの統計的な除去に別のアルゴリズムの適用が必要と思われる。これらの検討はすでに準備された機器、ソフトを駆使して解決出来るものと考える。高力アルミニウム合金の3%NaCl溶液中でKISCC試験を続行され、貴方のデータの確認を行った。破面からのき裂伝播による情報と計測速度を関連づけるべく数百の破面SEM写真の画像解析を行った。この関連は現在のところあまり明瞭でなく、より高度(トンネル顕微鏡、原子間力顕微鏡)の観察に基づく必要があると結論づけられた。き裂伝播速度を測定しない超集積8試片の試験の可能な装置の設計を行った。分担研究者山中はアルミニウム基シラス傾斜機能複合材料の食塩水中でKISCC試験を行こない、プラトウ域のき裂伝播速度とシラス傾斜配分の関連を検討し、地域の要望の高いこの材料の実用化を図った。付加電位によるき裂先端挙動を解析し加速試験の可能性の検討及び腐食環境中のアコーステックエミッション法によるき裂検出精度の改善は、有意な結果は得られなかった。予定した3000時間試験は装置の安定性より行えなかった。研究場所を代表者の新職場に移し、これを完成させる。

    炭化けい素(SiC)粒子で強化したアルミニウム合金は比強度、耐熱性に優れた複合材料である。従来、粉末冶金法、圧延、押出し等により均質な材料の製造が可能となってきているが、高い製造コスト、難切削加工性等の問題がこの種の複合材料の実用化の大きな障害となっている。SiC粒子強化鋳造用アルミニウム合金はキャスティングによるニアネットシェイプ成型が可能なため、上述の問題を打開できる。しかし、鋳造用複合材料の場合には、SiC粒子分散は凝固条件に支配され、このため材料の機械的性質に及ぼす凝固組織の影響を明らかにしなくてはならない。本研究では特に疲労特性に注目し、疲労き裂伝播挙動に及ぼすSiC粒子ならびにマトリクス組織の影響を明らかにすることを目的とした。鋳造欠陥の影響を極力少なくするため、高圧鋳造法で作製し、種々の熱処理を施した10%および20%のSiC粒子を含有するA356アルミニウム合金ならびに比較材として無改良およびSr改良処理を行なったA356合金について、疲労き裂伝播試験を行なった。その結果、次のような知見が得られた。
    1)SiC粒子の含有によりき裂伝播に必要な応力拡大係数の下限界値が向上した。2)パリス域での勾配はSiC粒子量の増加とともに増大した。これはSiC粒子および共晶Si粒子を核としたディンプル形成によるき裂伝播速度の加速効果であると考えられる。3)破面観察よりパリス域から最終破断に至る高伝播速度領域への移行は、マトリクス中の共晶Siの形態に支配されていることを見いだした。そこで共晶組織を球状化、あるいは更に微細化したところ疲労き裂伝播速度の大きな低減が見られた。以上のようなことからネットシェイプ成型を目的とした鋳造用アルミニウム合金複合材料の疲労き裂伝播特性を向上させるためには、SiC粒子分散のみならず共晶Si粒子の組織制御が重要であることが明らかとなった。

    The fatigue characteristics are of fundamental importance when choosing a structural material, especially when deciding upon the material for the fusion reactor wall where long term safety is of primary importance. It is well known that a metal may fail under imposition of a stress considerably lower than the normal breaking stress, if that stress is applied in a cyclic manner. However, the fatigue properties of highly irradiated wall materials have not been studied in detail. This is primarily due to the shortage of materials which are suitable for such applications. In common type fatigue test, a larger size specimen used to be required compared to other mechanical tests. Nevertheless in the case of fusion reactor wall materials, the limited irradiation space for the specimen requires the use of TEM disk size specimens in mechanical tests to cooperate with safety regulations.
    In this research two types of miniature fatigue test method have been developed in response to the requirements of the fusion reactor wall materials development program. It is known that the fatigue strength evaluated by the axial loading test is independent of the specimen size, while that evaluated by the bend test or torsion test is dependent upon the size of specimen. Then new type of gripping system for the axial, tension-tension, fatigue testing of TEM size specimens has been developed. An alignment toot assists to grip the miniature specimen. The miniature tension-tension fatigue test method seems to provide reliable S-N curves for two austenitic stainless steels.
    An indentation method has also been developed to determine fatigue properties. A hard steel ball or ceramic ball was used for cyclically loading the specimen and an S-N curve was subsequently obtained. The merit of this method is primarily simple handling. S-N curves obtained from four materials by this indentation method compared well with those obtained from the rotary bend fatigue test employing a standard size specimen.

    Functional surface films have been practically used in the field of High-Tech electronics devices and as protective coating materials of the products which suffer from corrosive environment. Such thin surface films are inevitably exposed to the condition of cyclic strain resulting from various kinds of heat treatment in their production process, and this induce the cracking and/or decohesion of the film. However, no inspection method has been developed in order to evaluate the important mechanical properties of the film such as fatigue strength or bond strength. The aim of the present research is to develop the noble testing method to examine the fatigue properties of the thin surface film.
    The indentation loading which has been used for hardness measurement was evolved into the cyclic loading system to the specimen surface using a ball indenter. This succeeded in developing intensively cyclically strained micron-scale region beneath the specimen surface. An age-hardened aluminum alloy was cyclically loaded in this testing system, and the formation of the selective fatigued region (Persistent Slip Band) was successfully recognized at the expected position. The position was consistent with the theoretical calculation.
    A non-linear component, corresponding to the cyclic plastic strain was extract from the experimentally measured stress-strain response using an acoustic wave analysis method. It was demonstrated that the non-linear component relate to the film thickness and the fretting condition between the film and the ball. Constructing databases for various kinds of films is required to improve the reliability of the presented testing method.
