    Three types of polypropylene (PP), i.e. low tacticity and high molecular weight PP (HMC), low tacticity and low molecular weight PP, and medium tacticity and low molecular weight PP, were mixed into ordinary high-tacticity PP (standard PP), and high-speed melt spinning of these PP blends was performed. Attainable maximum take-up velocity of the all PP blends increased in comparison with that of the standard PP. The improvement became more prominent with the decrease of tacticity, the decrease of molecular weight and the increase of the amount of blended low tacticity component. From the measurement of the thinning behavior of spin-line, it was speculated that the shift of the position of neck-like deformation toward downstream as well as the existence of additional gradual thinning after the neck-like deformation were possible reasons for the improvement of spinnability. Tensile test of the as-spun fibers was performed. Initial tensile modulus of the as-spun fibers increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The fibers with higher crystallinity showed higher modulus if comparison was made for the fibers obtained at the same take-up velocity, whereas the maximum moduli for different PP blends obtained at respective highest take-up velocity were similar. Tensile strength showed a maximum at an intermediate take-up velocity for each PP blend, and the fibers of higher average molecular weight generally showed higher tensile strength. Based on the above results, additional high-speed melt spinning experiment was performed preparing a PP blend with increased amount of HMC, and the combined improvements of spinnability and tensile strength of as-spun fibers were successfully attained. The as-spun fibers also showed fairly high tensile modulus. On the other hand, it was found that the as-spun fibers have relatively high crystallinity in spite of the large amount of HMC with low crystallizablity. The gaining of high crystallinity, which was possibly caused by the increased viscosity and stress-induced enhancement of crystallization, can be considered as the origin of the improvement of tensile modulus.

    In the melt spinning of high molecular weight poly(ethylene terephthalate), spinline immediately below the spinning nozzle was heated by irradiating the CO2 laser with the intention of controlling the physical and mechanical properties of resultant fibers. In comparison with the fibers prepared without the laser irradiation, as-spun fibers obtained with laser irradiation showed higher elongation at break and higher tenacity. Higher elongation was attributed to lower tensile stress in the spinline caused by the increase of spinline temperature. Drawn fibers were produced from thus prepared as-spun fibers at various draw ratios. When the drawn fibers with similar elongation at break were compared, fibers prepared with the laser irradiation showed steeper increase in the stress-strain curve in the region of low strain, and showed higher tenacity as a result. On the whole, plot of the relation between tenacity and elongation at break of each fiber shifted toward higher tenacity and higher elongation in case of fibers prepared with the laser irradiation, indicating that the toughness of the fibers were improved. Numerical simulation of the melt spinning process incorporating the effect of laser irradiation suggested that temperature increase by the laser irradiation was at most about 70 degree in the spinning conditions adopted in this study. It was also confirmed that the heating of the spinline immediately below the spinneret led to steeper decrease of spinline diameter in the region near the spinneret, and reduction of strain rate and decrease of tensile stress in the region of lowered spinline temperature. These changes in the thinning behavior of the spinline were speculated to be the origin of the changes in the mechanical properties of laser irradiated fibers.

    The mechanical properties of polypropylene/polypropylene (PP/PP) composites consisting of homo-polypropylene fiber and propylene-ethylene random copolymer matrix were investigated. Generally, it has been already recognized that a transcrystalline layer is formed at the fiber/crystalline matrix interface. However, it is still uncertain whether this transcrystalline layer affects the mechanical properties of the composite material. Therefore, two types of unidirectional PP/PP composites with different impregnation conditions were fabricated by using a film-stacking and compression-molding method, and the effects of the transcrystalline layer on mechanical properties of PP/PP composites were examined. It is possible to form a much more transcrystalline layer at fiber/matrix interfaces by improving the impregnation conditions. Tensile tests in the 0°, 90° and intermediate loading directions were carried out. In the tensile tests at 0° and 90°, the tensile moduli in both directions increased with improving impregnation conditions, and particularly in the 90° direction, the improvement of tensile modulus was remarkable. On the other hand, in the intermediate loading directions θ=45°∼60°, the tensile moduli of the good impregnation samples were lower than the tensile modulus in the 90° direction. It is believed that these results are related to the structure of the transcrystalline layer. The lamellae in the transcrystalline layer grow perpendicular to the fiber and are able to elongate in the 90° direction. Therefore, in the 90° direction, the lamellae can transfer stress to the reinforcing fiber directly. On the other hand, in the 45° direction, the lamellae are difficult to elongate and transfer of stress to the reinforcing fiber is difficult. In all loading directions, the tensile strengths were slightly increased with improving impregnation conditions.

    A liquid isothermal bath (LIB) was introduced into the high-speed melt spinning process of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to modify the temperature and stress profiles in the spinning line. The LIB was placed at 100 or 150cm below the spinneret and the liquid temperature was controlled to 40, 70, 100 and 130°C. The structure of as-spun fibers was characterized by the wide-angle X-ray diffraction, birefringence and Lorentz density measurements. The high-speed spun fibers obtained at the take-up velocities of above 1.5km/min using the LIB showed the mixture of α and β modification crystals, whereas the fibers obtained without the LIB (standard fibers) showed only the α modification crystals. This result indicates that the β modification crystals can be formed directly from the melt in the modified melt spinning process. The weight fraction of β modification crystals showed a minimum with an increase in the liquid temperature suggesting that the mechanism of the formation of β modification crystals in the low and high temperature regions are different. The birefringence and Lorentz density of the as-spun fibers increased with an increase in the take-up velocity and the fibers obtained at high speeds with high liquid temperatures showed higher birefringence and Lorentz density than the standard fibers obtained at the same take-up velocities. The weight fraction of β modification crystals and birefringence were higher for the fibers produced using the LIB with increased liquid depth. The mechanism of fiber structure formation in the spinning process modified with the LIB was discussed based on the enhanced elongational stress and controlled filament temperature, which originated from the high friction force and high heat transfer coefficient at the interface between the liquid and the running filament.

    High speed spinnings of sheath/core=Poly (ethylene terephthalate)/Polyethylene (PET/PE) and PE/PET bicomponent fibers were carried out and the tensile behavior of the as-spun fibers was investigated. The structure development of the PET component in the bicomponent fiber was enhanced whereas that of the PE component was suppressed in comparison with respective single component spinnings. The analyzed birefringence for PET and PE components in bicomponent fibers did not change by reversing the sheath-core arrangement of the components. Accordingly the initial Young's modulus of both the sheath/core=PET/PE and PE/PET fibers were similar. On the other hand, the elongation at break and tenacity of the PE/PET fibers were larger than those of the PET/PE fibers. A three-dimensional model analysis of the bicomponent fiber conducted assuming transverse isotropy suggested that the generation of tensile or compressive radial stress could cause such behavior in tensile testing. The necking behavior of the low-speed spun bicomponent fibers was analyzed in detail. The natural draw ratio was found to be governed by the molecular orientation of the PET component. The necking behavior was slightly affected by the presence of the PE component in that the different sheath-core arrangement caused different types of influence.

    Sheath-core type bicomponent fibers consisting of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) as a sheath component and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) as a core component were prepared by a high-speed melt spinning process, and continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites were fabricated from these fibers. The processability of LCP was improved by co-processing with PET, and tensile modulus and strength of the LCP component in the PET/LCP bicomponent fibers were enhanced in comparison with LCP single component spinning. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the molecular orientation of LCP component in thermoplastic composites did not change as compared to those in the as-spun bicomponent fibers. The tensile modulus and strength of PET/LCP bicomponent fibers and thermoplastic composites were also similar. To combine the fiber spinning process with the thermoplastic composites processing, thermoplastic composites with a structural gradient in fiber content were also fabricated from the bicomponent fibers in which sheath-core composition was continuously changed during the spinning process. In the three-point bending test of these composites, different mechanical behavior, depending on load direction, appeared. This behavior of the composites prepared in our study is similar to that of bamboo which has a very similar structure.
