    Exciton transport in molecular and supramolecular structures was studied with the aim of understanding the key factors for long-range exciton transport in mesoscopic organic and hybrid systems. Simultaneous measurements by fluorescence and atomic force microscopy on self-assembled supramolecular nanofibers and their bundles showed that 3-dimensional mesostructures function as efficient light waveguides. On the other hand, 1-dimensional nanofibers exhibit long exciton diffusion lengths on the order of several hundreds of nanometers. Such large diffusion length values were explained by the formation of oblique molecular aggregates between individual monomers within the nanofibers. Further, the effect of topology on the exciton diffusion was studied using self-assembled supramolecular nanorings. Absorption and fluorescence polarization anisotropy together with theoretical simulations showed that the exciton transport along the nanorings is limited to several nanometers.

    Individual chains of conjugated polymers were incorporated into vertical cylinders of phase-separated block copolymers. The hybrid thin films were used in organic electroluminescent devices to study electroluminescence spectra on a single-chain level of a polyfluorene derivative and to clarify the relationship between conformation and photophysical properties of conjugated polymers.

    Optical and photophysical properties of conjugated polymers and related systems were studied on single-molecule level in relation to their conformation and structural properties. For conjugated polymers the study revealed the relationship between conformation and exciton localization and dissociation, confirmed the existence and size of light-emitting domains in polymer chains, and found the connection between conformational dynamics and related photophysics. For non-conjugated polymers it was found that topology of individual chains is a determining factor for their diffusion properties. For single light-harvesting systems of photosynthetic bacteria the study revealed their excitonic properties and the role of structural disorder.
