    Perovskite oxide based composites with conductive carbonaceous materials have garnered significant attention for their high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline media. While extensive research has focused on the rational design of transition metal oxides, such as perovskites, the role of carbon additives has received comparatively less attention despite their thermodynamic instability under OER conditions. This study investigated the OER and corrosion behavior of composite catalysts by employing LaCoO3 (LCO) and Sr2Co0.8Fe0.2O3Cl (SCFOC) catalysts with different OER mechanisms and activities, and carbonaceous materials with different graphitization degrees. We applied the online differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) for the quantification of the CO2 evolution current hidden in the overall oxidation current at the OER potential. The LCO composite with amorphous carbon exhibited a substantial CO2 evolution when compared with the graphitized carbon, indicating that the apparent OER currents include contributions from carbon oxidative corrosion. On the other hand, the noticeable CO2 evolution current of the SCFOC composite was almost independent of the graphitization degree of the carbon, suggesting overestimation of its OER activity. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate conductive carbon materials and optimizing the catalyst compositions for precise determination of the OER activities from a methodological viewpoint, while balancing the performance and durability from a practical viewpoint.

    Reversible air electrodes with high activity and durability during the discharge/charge processes are required for rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Although carbon materials are widely used as catalyst supports and conductive additives for metal oxide catalysts in the catalyst layer (CL) and as the main active constituent in the gas-diffusion layer (GDL), the carbon is oxidized during the charge step, causing degradation of the air electrode. In this study, carbon-free air electrodes were prepared using electro-conductive oxides, namely, indium tin oxide or antimony-doped tin oxide, as an alternative to carbon materials in both the CL and GDL to achieve reversibility and durability of the air electrode in zinc-air batteries. While the initial performance of the carbon-free air electrodes was inferior to that of the carbon-based air electrodes, the lifetime of the carbon-free air electrodes was remarkably longer. These results indicate a critical role of electro-conductive oxides in both the CL and GDL for durable air electrodes.

    Zinc-based secondary aqueous batteries are promising candidates as innovative batteries for their high energy density and high safety. Their limited cycle life is chiefly due to the morphology changes of the zinc electrode and thus tracking the zinc distribution during electrochemical processes is indispensable for clarifying the deterioration mechanism of the zinc electrode. We here report the zinc distribution near the electrode in a millimeter scale on zinc reduction and oxidation observed by operando X-ray fluorescence imaging with a high time resolution. The zinc dendritic growth and its dissolution behavior is discussed based on the obtained zinc distribution images.

    Several research groups have reported that the cathode/electrolyte interface plays an essential role for the deterioration of lithium ion batteries [1, 2]. To further enhance the cycle time of lithium-ion batteries, it is important to understand the reactions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. However, the mechanisms of such interface reactions have not been fully understood due to the difficulty of their direct observation at the nanometer scale. Recently, we have developed a new technique named in-situ total-reflection fluorescence X-ray absorption spectroscopy (in-situ TRF-XAS) to analyze directly the electronic structure at the cathode/electrolyte interface under operating condition [3, 4]. By using in-situ TRF-XAS, we investigate the electronic structure of LiCoO2 and/or LiFePO4/electrolyte interface under battery operation condition and discuss the correlation between the electronic structure at the interface and durability of the active materials. LiCoO2 is one of the most popular active materials whose capacity easily fades with the long charge/discharge cycling [5]. On the other hand, LiFePO4 exhibits a more stable capacity with cycling compared to LiCoO2 [6].

    LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 thin-films were prepared on Pt and Au polycrystalline substrate by pulsed layer deposition (PLD), respectively. In-situ TRF-XAS measurements were performed at the BL01B1, BL28XU and BL37XU at SPring-8 (Japan) using a home-made cell with a counter electrode of Li foil (Fig. 1). The separator (CELGARD®3501) was immersed with 1 mol dm-3 LiClO4 in a 1:1 volumetric mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC). The TRF-XAS measurements were conducted under setting the X-ray incident angle at 0.17-0.20° and the generated fluorescence X-ray was detected with a solid state detector.

    In-situ TRF XAS spectra corresponding to the information at cathode/electrolyte interface of the LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 thin films were analyzed before and after electrolyte immersion. The XANES spectrum of the LiCoO2 surface was shifted to lower energy upon electrolyte immersion, meaning the reduction of the Co ions at the surface. In contrast to LiCoO2, the XANES spectrum of the LiFePO4 surface did not show any shift upon electrolyte immersion, meaning that no reduction of the Fe ions at the surface occurred. At the electrode/electrolyte interface, the electrochemical potential gap between the two phases should be compensated. The potential change at the electrode side and the electrolyte side forms space charge layer and electrical double layer, respectively. For LiCoO2, the reduction of the surface means the formation of the space charge layer via electron transfer form the electrolyte and therefore the potential gap is compensated by both the space charge layer and the electrical double layer (Fig. 2 (a)). As for LiFePO4, the space charge layer hardly forms at the surface because the surface was not reduced via electron transfer from the electrolyte. Therefore, the electrical double layer contributes locally to the potential compensation for LiFePO4 (Fig. 2(b)). The durability of the electrode materials depends on the formation of the space charge layer.

    The mixed LiMn&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;4&lt;/sub&gt;-LiNi&lt;sub&gt;1-x-y&lt;/sub&gt;Co&lt;sub&gt;x&lt;/sub&gt;Mn&lt;sub&gt;y&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; composite cathode in lithium ion battery during discharge process was studied with time resolve XRD and XAFS measurements in order to clarify the reaction and degradation mechanism of LiMn&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;4&lt;/sub&gt; and LiNi&lt;sub&gt;1-x-y&lt;/sub&gt;Co&lt;sub&gt;x&lt;/sub&gt;Mn&lt;sub&gt;y&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;. The combination of the XRD and XAFS measurements successfully allowed us to understand each reaction for LiMn&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;4&lt;/sub&gt; and LiNi&lt;sub&gt;1-x-y&lt;/sub&gt;Co&lt;sub&gt;x&lt;/sub&gt;Mn&lt;sub&gt;y&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; in mixed composite cathode. Furthermore, the output of the cell with mixed composite cathode was faded by storage under high temperature condition and it was clarified that the factor of output fading was due to the decrease of reaction ratio for LiMn&lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;4&lt;/sub&gt; by reaction distribution.

    There is growing expectation for rechargeable batteries used for electric vehicle and other applications. To establish new battery concepts requires essential understanding of rechargeable battery reaction mechanism. Thus fundamental battery R&D activities started at R&D Initiative for Scientific Innovation on New Generation Batteries (RISING) Project under the support of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). In RISING Project a special attention is focused on developing advanced analytical methods including synchrotron-beam aided analysis and computer-aided analysis. In this report recent results obtained by using these advanced analytical methods are described.
