New laboratory launched from July, 2015. Our expertise is polymer nanomechanics, in other words, investigating nano-scale structures and properties of polymeric materials, by which we connects knowledge in nano to macroscopic world. “No swallow written in textbooks” is our motto. We have been currently involved in several national projects such as CAO SIP, CAO ImPACT, JST CREST. We are also very positive in collaborating with companies, oversea research institutes.

    Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has an advantage of obtaining topographic and mechanical properties at the same time. In analyzing the force-distance curve using Hertz theory, Young's modulus is obtained with nanometer-scale resolution. Furthermore, sample deformation by the force exerted is also estimated from the force-distance curve analysis. We can reconstruct a real topographic image by incorporating apparent height with deformation image. We applied this method for obtaining information on mechanical properties of carbon black reinforced natural rubber. We were able to obtain Young's modulus distribution image together with apparent topographic and reconstructed real topographic images. Then we were able to recognize three regions; rubber, carbon black (or bound rubber) and interfacial regions. Though the existence of these regions had been investigated by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance, this paper would be the first report on the quantitative evaluation of the interfacial region in real space.

    Two parts of the physics of rubber elasticity have not been fully verified experimentally to date. The first one is the entropic elasticity of a single polymer chain. The second one is Affine deformation hypothesis, the bridge between molecular bases of rubber elasticity and phenomenological deformation mechanics of polymer chain network. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to find a cue to experimental evidence for them. Therefore, we did not give much attention to AFM's high-resolution feature, while its nanometer-scale palpatbility was specially utilized instead. The technique, so-called, nanofishing revealed the entropic elasticity of a single polystyrene chain in good, or theta solvent conditions. The entanglement inside a single polymer chain was detected by nanometer-scale stress-relaxation experiment with quick stepwise strain excitation. The breakdown of Affine deformation was also observed in uniaxially elongated natural rubber vulcanizate, which showed a very wide modulus distribution. We concluded tentatively that the plateau region observed in macroscopic stress-strain curve could be attributed to the remaining of the local region that had sufficiently low modulus even after stretched at the elongation ratio of around 4.

    Atomic force microscopy (AFM) enabled us to investigate the statistical properties of single polymer chains by a method called as "nanofishing", which stretched a single polymer chain adsorbed on a substrate with its one end by picking it at another end. A force-extension curve obtained for a single polystyrene chain in a θ solvent (cyclohexane) showed a good agreement with a worm-like chain model, and thus gave microscopic information about entropic elasticity. Solvent effects on polymer chain conformations were also discussed. Nanofishing technique was extended for dynamic viscoelasitc measurement of single polymer chains. AFM cantilever was mechanically oscillated at its resonant frequency during stretching process. By this technique, we could quantitatively and simultaneously estimate elongation-dependent changes of stiffness and viscosity of a single chain itself with using a phenomenological model. The solvent effect on the viscosity in low extension regions was ensured that the viscosity under about 10kHz perturbation was attributed to monomer-solvent friction. These methods were proved to be powerful to give the experimental proofs against several basic questions in polymer physics and furthermore will unveil hidden properties of polymer chains or polymer solutions by any macroscopic measurements in the future.

    Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now recognized as one of the major tools to investigate the structural and mechanical properties of polymer surfaces. We were particularly interested in information obtained from force-distance curves of rubbery or melt state samples. By analyzing the force-distance curves, the sample deformation by the force applied on the surface and the resultant real height free from sample deformation were estimated. The force-distance curves also gave us Young's modulus by analyzing curves with Hertz theory. Thus, when force-distance curve measurements were performed on every point of the sample (force-volume measurements), we could obtain a sample deformation image, a real height image, and a Young's modulus image simultaneously. We demonstrated the application of this method on the blend of unvulcanized natural rubber and ethylene-propylene diene elastmer.
