As the installed capacity of renewable energy sources is increasing, the role of inverters is becoming more important in the maintenance of power system stability. Therefore, in this study, we propose the use of a wide area control system to control the inverters of renewables in a coordinated manner to improve transient stability. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that this method can further improve transient stability compared with an autonomous voltage support function that is applied to existing inverters of renewables. The proposed wide area control system could be a promising approach to address the transient instability phenomena under unscheduled power flow conditions by periodically updating the control table based on real-time information.

In this study, we have proposed a novel excitation control method for synchronous generators (SGs) for improvement of transient stability in power systems. The proposed excitation system controls the excitation voltage based on a wide-area measurement system (WAMS). Numerical simulations were carried out for multi-machine power systems. The results show that the proposed WAMS-based stabilizer (WBS) improves the first swing stability and enhances the damping of the subsequent oscillation, whereas the conventional power system stabilizer (PSS) does not necessarily improve the first swing stability. It is also noteworthy that the WBS has few parameters that need to be tuned, unlike the PSS.

In order to operate stably a power system with uncertain power flows due to a massive integration of photovoltaic (PV) and wind power generations, an adaptive and integrated stabilizing system consisting of generator PSSs and transmission line FACTS devices, where wide-area-measured information is used, and an integrated control method of grid-side large-capacity batteries and many PV inverters were proposed and their effectiveness was made clear by digital simulations.
Next, a HIL (Hardware-in-the Loop) test system, where a real inverter of PV and/or electric vehicle (EV) are connected into a real time simulator with a power supply and demand balancing model in transmission network and a power flow and voltage calculation model in distribution network, was developed in order to test feasibility of the system frequency and voltage control by PV and/or EV and its effectiveness was made clear.

Installation of solar photovoltaic(PV) power generation systems may deteriorates power system stability because the dynamic characteristic of the PV systems is different from that of conventional synchronous generators. In this research, a novel power system stabilizing theory has been developed to keep the stability of the power systems with large number of the PV systems. The proposed method controls the inverters of the PV systems and the large-capacity batteries that have never considered as controlled objects for the improvement of the power system stability. Use of real-time wide-area information is also considered in the proposed method to make the control system applicable to future power systems. Effectiveness of the method has been demonstrated by numerical simulations.
