    In this study, an original method for production of ice slurry from ethanol solution without using a refrigerator is proposed. As was introduced in the first report, this system has advantages compared with similar existing systems using materials other than ethanol solution. In this paper, the process of producing ice slurry using this method was observed, and the relationship between ethanol concentration of the solution and that of the vapor, which evaporated from the ice-solution mixture, was measured. It was found that the ethanol concentration of vapor was lower than that in the condition that did not produce ice. The composition of vapor was found to be affected by the sublimation of the ice produced. Finally, the COP of this system was estimated and the effect of sublimation of ice was investigated. © 2008.

    In this study, a new method of ice slurry formation was proposed, and the related phenomena were investigated. In the method, ethanol solution, as thermal storage material, evaporates on a low-pressure condition, and the remained solution is cooled and frozen due to the latent heat of evaporation. It is necessary to clarify a behavior of ethanol solution during ice production, and estimate the COP of this method for practical use. Thus, the relationship between concentration of ethanol solution and of the vapor, which is evaporated from it, was measured. Using this relationship, the COP was estimated. As the results, it was found that the difference in concentration between the solution and the vapor increases as the concentration of the solution increases. It was also found that the COP is affected by the concentration of the solution, the temperature in condenser and the type of freezing point depressant. Since the estimated COP is so high, it can be said that this method has advantage for producing ice.

    In order to clarify effects of electric charge on freezing of supercooled water, experiments were carried out with various kinds of electrodes in supercooled water. Water sample was kept in a test tube and cooled down at a constant cooling rate. When the water sample was maintained under a supercooling state, an electric charge was applied to the water sample with a small electric current. The degree of supercooling was measured continuously. Then the degree of supercooling at freezing was determined. Six kinds of materials were used for electrodes. Those materials were Aluminum, Copper, Argentum, Aurum, Platinum and Carbon. It was found that the effects of electric charge were distinct according to the material used for electrodes. The degree of supercooling at freezing was the lowest in the case of Aluminum. On the other hand, the highest value of the degree of supercooling at freezing was obtained in the case of carbon. The reason for the difference in the degree of supercooling at freezing by six materials was discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

    This paper proposes a procedure on the thermodynamically consistent determination of virial coefficients from speed-of-sound measurements. Using the speed-of-sound values for gaseous Difluoromethane (R-32) +Pentafluoroethane (R-125), R -32+ 1, 1, 1, 2 - tetrafluoroethane (R-134a), R125/134a and R-32/125/134a which have already been reported in the previous paper, the second virial coefficients of R-32/125, R -32/134a, R-125/134a and R-32/125/134a were determined by means of thermodynamic relation among the virial coefficients of two different virial equations of state with respect to pressure and density. The present virial equation of state regarding density expansion can represent not only the speed-of-sound values but also the PρT-data for R-32/125, R -32/134a, R -125/134a and R-32/125/134a. The deviation of the speed-of-sound data from the virial equation of state is about±100ppm.And the deviation of the PρT-measurements by Kleemiss and Tillner-Roth (1997) from the virial equation of state against density is about ±0.l%. The behavior of the second virial coefficient is shown at the available compositions.

    In order to confirm the effect of ultrasonic wave on the freezing of supercooled water, various level of ultrasonic waves were applied to the supercooled water. The frequencies of the waves applied were 28kHz, 40kHz, 45kHz, 50kHz, and 1MHz. In order to clarify the mechanism of the effect of the ultrasonic wave, several factors were examined changing the experimental conditions and the results were compared each other; the factors were the existence of a free surface or oil -water interface, the volume of water, the purity of water and the existence of metal bar inserted. Each test section was cooled at a constant cooling rate and the ultrasonic waves were applied to each test section continuously, varying the frequency and the intensity. The experiments were carried out until the water in the test section solidified. The degree of supercooling at the freezing is determined by measuring the temperature just before a rapid increment of temperature due to freezing. It was found that the existence of a free surface and insertion of a metal bar with an addition to the ultrasonic wave have effects on the freezing of supercooled water. On the other hand, if oil-water interface or no metal bar insertion was selected as the experimental condition, there was no influence of the ultrasonic wave on the freezing of the supercooled water even the frequency and the intensity were varied.

Using the speed-of-sound values for gaseous l, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) which have already been reported in the previous paper, the 2nd and 3rd virial coefficients of R-134a were determined by means of thermodynamic relation among the virial coefficients of two different virial equations of state with respect to pressure and density. The present virial equation of state regarding density expansion can represent not only the speed-of-sound values but also the PρT-data for R-134a with the smallest standard deviation ever reported. The standard deviation of the speed-of-sound data from the virial equation of state is ±49 ppm. And the standard deviation of the PρT-measurements by Zhang et al. (1996) and by Tillner-Roth and Baehr (1992) from the virial equation of state against density is ±0.04%. The comparison of the virial equation of state with available other equations of state clearly shows the reduced uncertainty of the present equation of state.
