This paper aims at minimizing capacitor-voltage fluctuations inherent in a modular multilevel cascade inverter based on double-star chopper cell (DSCC) or a modular multilevel DSCC inverter. The inverter can drive an induction motor loaded with a quadratic-torque load. Both theoretical analysis and numerical calculation reveal that the voltage fluctuations can be minimized when the ratio of a magnetizing-current component with respect to a torque-current component in the motor current is set to unity, regardless of the motor mechanical speed. A three-phase DSCC inverter is designed and constructed to drive a 380-V, 15-kW, 50-Hz, four-pole, induction motor loaded with a quadratic torque that is proportional to a square of the motor mechanical speed. Experimental results confirm the validity of the theoretical and numerical calculations.

This paper presents an experimental discussion on modular multilevel cascade converters based on double-star chopper cells (MMCC-DSCC). Hereinafter, a single MMCC-DSCC is referred to simply as a "DSCC". A couple of DSCCs are used to form a front-to-front (FTF) system capable of dc voltage matching and galvanic isolation between two dc grids. The FTF system can be considered as a dc-ac-dc power conversion system including an ac-link high-power transformer. The higher the ac-link frequency, the smaller and lighter are the ac-link transformer and dc capacitors. When the so-called "phase-shifted-carrier PWM" is applied to the DSCC, theoretical analysis and computer simulation have confirmed that a ratio of the carrier frequency with respect to the ac-link frequency can be reduced to 5/2. This paper designs, constructs, and tests a 400-Vdc 10-kW downscaled FTF system with a carrier frequency of 450Hz and an ac-link frequency of 180Hz, where their ratio is 5/2. Experimental waveforms obtained from the downscaled system are compared with simulated ones obtained from a software package, PSCAD/EMTDC, under the same operating and circuit conditions. They agree well each other not only under steady states but also under transient states.

This paper presents a detailed discussion on the modular multilevel cascade converter based on double-star chopper-cells (MMCC-DSCC). Hereinafter, it is simply referred to as the DSCC. A couple of DSCCs are used to form a three-phase 6.6-kV back-to-back (BTB) system installed between two power distribution feeders. Each DSCC, using 3.3-kV IGBTs, consists of 16 cascaded chopper-cells per leg. Low voltage steps bring about significant reductions in the harmonic voltage and current to the BTB system. A conventional power conversion system employs bulky line-frequency transformers and dc-link capacitors, whereas this system does not require either of them, thereby reducing the overall physical size and weight. Although no voltage sensor is installed on the common dc link of the BTB system, an indirect feedback loop in the control system makes it possible to regulate the mean dc-link voltage to its reference. This paper describes the design, construction, and evaluation of a three-phase 200-V, 10-kW downscaled model, with focus on operating principles and performance. Finally, experimental waveforms are compared with simulated ones obtained from a software package of PSCAD/EMTDC under the same operating conditions, including steady and transient states. The experimental and simulated waveforms agree well with each other.

The generator voltage of a cutting-edge wind turbine generation system (WTGS) is expected to increase from the conventional low-voltage level of 690 V to a medium-voltage level of 6.6 kV with a power level up to 10 MW without the
application of a parallel connection of multiple power units. This research project proposed a 10-MW WTGS consisting of a three-phase open-winding synchronous generator equipped with six lead terminals and three modular multilevel converters (MMCs) which are identical in terms of circuit configuration. The validity of the system has been confirmed by computer simulation using PSCAD software package along with experiment using a down-scaled system. Moreover, this research projects has proposed a new non-isolated dc-dc converter which can achieve reduction in size and weight of an inductor. The validity of the new dc-dc converter has been confirmed by a 150 V down-scaled system and computer simulation using PSCAD software package.

The aim of this research is to establish a core technology of high-efficiency and high-performance medium-voltage motor drives for large-capacity fans and compressors. From a practical point of view, this research takes up a modular multilevel DSCC inverter used for such motor drives. When the research was initiateted in 2013, no detailed discussions have been made on the driving and braking performance of synchronous and induction motors.
This research has designed, constructed, and tested a 400-V, 20-kW three-phase DSCC inverter consisting of eight cascaded chopper cells per arm. Experimental waveforms of the DSCC-based motor drives show satisfactory performance in adjustable-speed drives of the three-phase permanent magnet six-pole synchronous motor rated at 360 V,75Hz,and 15 kW, as well as the three-phase four-pole induction motor rated at 380 V, 50 Hz, and 15 kW. Other experimental waveforms of the induction-motor drive provides fast and safe dynamic-braking performance.

This study has dealt with a modular multilevel converter (MMC) that is considered as one of the next-generation multilevel converters with a focus on its applications to medium-voltage motor drives. The study has shown that the MMC can operate without using any dc-link capacitors connected between the common dc terminals. Moreover, it has proposed a control method to achieve stable operation at low speed without inducing any overvoltage and/or overcurrent. Moreover, a stable startup from the standstill to the nominal speed has been achieved by applying the common-mode voltage injection method developed in this study. The validity of the motor drive has been confirmed by experiment using a 400-V, 15-kW downscaled model.

The aim of this research is to establish the core technology of the next-generation environment-friendly battery energy storage system that is characterized by combing the latest Li-ion battery modules with a modular multilevel cascade converter. The three-phase experimental system rated at 200 V, 10 kW, and 20 kWh was designed, constructed, and tested to confirm and justify the operating principles and stable performance of the battery energy storage system. As a result, a total harmonic distortion (THD) value of the line (supply) current complies completely with the Japanese harmonic guidelines. In addition, stable ride-through capability of the so-called “voltage sag” was confirmed by computer simulation under various voltage sag conditions.

    Grant amount:\16300000 ( Direct Cost: \14800000 、 Indirect Cost:\1500000 )

The aim of this research is to develop a hybrid active-passive filter capable of direct connection to medium-voltage utility and industrial power systems without transformers. This hybrid filter is intended for harmonic current compensation of a medium-voltage adjustable-speed motor drive for energy savings in pumps and blowers. Such a motor drive requires no regenerative braking, thus allowing the motor drive to use a three-diode rectifier as the front end. This research leads to the following findings:
    1. The investigators have done feasibility study and conceptual design of a 6.6-kV transformerless hybrid filter suitable for a motor drive with a three-phase diode rectifier. This hybrid filter is characterized by series connection of a three-phase passive filter tuned In the seventh-harmonic frequency with a three-phase small-rated active filter using a three-level diode-clamped PWM converter without transformer.
    2. The investigators have achieved theoretical analysis of harmonic current mitigation by the hybrid filter, with focus on the required volt-ampere ratings of the passive filter and the active filter Their ratings have a tradeoff in terms of harmonic current mitigation. Computer simulation has been carried out, considering the effects of control delay and the so-called "dead time." The theoretical analysis has been compared with the computer simulation. As a result, the validity of the theoretical analysis has been confirmed, and a limitation of the analysis has been revealed.
    3. Taking into account the above-mentioned theoretical analysis and computer simulation, the investigators have deigned, constructed and tested a three-phase 400-V 15-kW downscaled system, where a three-level diode-clamped PWM converter has been used for the active filter. What is a major concern in introducing the three-level PWM converter into the hybrid filter is to keep the dc mean voltages of the two split dc capacitors balanced not only in steady states but also in transient states. The investigators have proposed a voltage-balancing control method for the hybrid filter The effectiveness and viability of the method has been verified by the experiments using the 400-V 15-kW system. The current THD (total harmonic distortion) in the supply side was less than 5%, and each harmonic current component was less than 3%, including up to 40-th harmonic components. Both the THD value and harmonic components perfectly meet the Japanese harmonic guidelines.
    4. Considerations on the 6.6-kV transformerless hybrid filter that will be put into practical use in the near future have been discussed on the basis of the results from the theoretical analysis, computer simulation and experiment.
