    It is important to prevent from hydrogen embrittlement cracking in the heat-affected zone of welded steels. The hydrogen permeation rate for bulk nickel at high temperatures is higher than that of stainless steel, although the reverse is true at low temperatures. Low carbon stainless 316L steel, which contained 12-15% nickel, was selected as the parent material for welding. We have investigated the affect of nickel near the heat-affected zone by measuring the hydrogen permeation at various temperatures. We performed hydrogen permeation tests into the bead on plate specimens using nickel filler. A stationary hydrogen gas flux through the stainless steel specimen was measured by using an orifice and a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS). The partial pressure difference for hydrogen that was applied to the specimen was able to be kept constant by maintaining a constant gas flow rate through the orifice in a low- pressure room. An orifice with a 3 mm diameter maintained stationary steady-state hydrogen gas flux from the specimen at 620K, while a 1.2 mm diameter orifice maintained the steady pressure at 520 K. The hydrogen permeability, K was calculated based on the measured steady-state hydrogen gas fluxes at various temperatures. These results plotted as log K versus 1/T (reciprocal temperature) could not be interpolated linearly. The permeability values of the specimen at 570 K and 520 K were less than interpolated ones between the value at 620 K and the value at 520K of the 316 L stainless steel substrate as received.

    The composition of a brazing-filler metal in an Ag-Cu-V system which was selected using lattice misfit data, was estimated using perturbation interface model and applied it to the brazing artificial single crystal diamond (111) by unidirectional-solidification brazing. An Ag-27.8Cu system containing less than 1mass%V brazing-filler metal provided stable joint strength (the shear strength at the brazed interface exceeded 200 MPa). Optical observation of the brazed interface revealed that silver crystal grains grew from vanadium carbide islands formed on the diamond. This behavior is consistent with a slight degree of lattice mismatch between silver and vanadium carbide crystals. Atomic force microscope observation revealed small scale islands of the reaction products with good adhesion are enough for brazing diamond (111). X-ray diffraction results indicated several types of vanadium carbides, V8C7, V4C3 and V2C were formed there, and V4C3 reaction product was considered to provide good adhesion between the filler metal and the diamond due to prefer solidification of silver on the reaction products islands.

The pressure difference of the specimen was able to maintain constant by controlling the gas flow rate from the orifice in low pressure vessel. The hydrogen permeability was low in two cases of a thin stainless steel with fine facing and that annealed at 1370 K for 2 hours. In these cases, the specimens' surfaces were considered to play hydrogen trap role and to prevent from pairing hydrogen atoms. On the other hand, high hydrogen permeability was obtained in the case of Argon plasma cleaning a low-pressure-vessel side surface. These results suggest that oxide film on the specimens' surface prevent hydrogen desorption.

    In order to clarify such brazing conditions for making sound joints of Al-alloys to stainless steel as to wet the Al-Si brazing filler on the stainless steel before rapid isothermal solidification of the filler, the solidification time is estimated by the numerical analysis and is also measured experimentally. The numerical analysis is conducted for the brazing process of the A1050 pure aluminum base metal and BA4045 aluminum-silicon brazing filler. The analysis contains both the initial dissolution of the base metal by the molten brazing filler and the following isothermal solidification behavior. The movement of the solid-liquid interface is calculated and the total solidification time is estimated. The brazing experiment between the same combination of metals shows the total solidification time is much less than the numerically estimated time. The element analysis by EPMA indicates that the zinc in the flux plays the dominant role in the brazing process. According to the results, the time to solidify the brazing filler layer is 30×10^<-3>H^2 s, where H is the initial brazing filler layer width in μm. To obtain the brazed joint between the Al alloys and stainless steel, the initial brazing filler layer of at least 30μm and the holding time of at least 30 s at the brazing temperature are considered to be suitable for the brazing.

    We propose and investigate a conductivity microscope made possible by improving the eddy current method. The scanning eddy current method using a small probe with a small gap between the probe and sample surface was tried; it could make a map distinguishing fine regions with different electrical conductivity related to electron-defect scattering. A copper-aluminum cold-pressure-welded junction specimen was selected, because it is considered to be a good conductor of electrons and is a commonly used interconnection for large-scale integrated circuits. At the bimetallie joint interface, two stages of 300-nm-thick and 600-min-thick poor-conductivity layers were detected. These poor-conductivity layers of aluminum are considered to include numerous defects and dislocations that were produced by large plastic flow during the welding process. This conductivity microscope can image a terrace layer of about 3.5 mum in width at the welded interface after the layer is annealed for one hour at 470 K, which is comparable to that in the case of scanning electron microscope. The electrical resistivity of this layer was indicated to be lower than that of the aluminum bulk by the estimation of the electrical resistivity. The layer is considered to be an alpha-copper solid solution one. This instrument is available to detect defects and solid solution.

    A small solenoid coil was equipped with a scanning tunneling electron microscope (STM) which has an iron needle core tip as the probe. Mutual inductance of the coil with a thin gold film on a mica plate was investigated in order to profile electrical conductivity. It is important to maintain a small gap between the tip apex and the sample surface. The gap is related to the distribution of electron scattering by induced current. The conductivity mapping was carried out on a large terrace. If the tip is over the step edge, the output signal from the probe coil becomes unstable. Atomically smooth surface of the specimen was in need for the electrical conductivity mapping. The electrical conductivity on the terrace was almost constant. The mutual inductance values with the gold film at various temperatures were investigated by cooling it below 250 K. The mutual inductance is inversely proportional to the temperature to the one-third power, T1/3. The relationship between the mutual inductance and the temperature was explained by the electromagnetic theory.

    Electrochemical methods were used along with brazing stabilized zirconia ceramics in order to investigate the reaction behavior between the ceramics and reactive metal titanium added to the silver-copper eutectic brazing filler. A 10 Hz, 5 V rectangular wave signal was applied to a brazing specimen and a comparative specimen, which consists of stabilized zirconia ceramics in order to compare each output signal. The output signals were observed during the brazing process using a digital storage oscilloscope. When the brazing filler foil began to melt, the waveform of the signal from the brazing specimen became sloped. The gradient of the slope was large at the beginning. As the brazing time proceeded, the gradient of the slope gradually decreased. It was suggested that the electric double-layer was formed at the brazing interface by titanium positive ions and oxygen negative ions, and that the capacitance of the layer was gradually decreased with the growing reaction layer. It was considered that titanium positive ions and oxygen negative ions are combined to form an electrical neutral reaction layer. These experimental results were analyzed from the point of view of transient phenomena in electric circuits. Calculation results agreed with the decreasing capacitance of the electric double-layer.
