The effect of soft X-ray irradiation on hydrogenated silicon-containing diamond-like carbon (Si-DLC) films intended for outer space applications was investigated by using synchrotron radiation (SR). We found that the reduction in film thickness was about 60 nm after 1600 mA·h SR exposure, whereas there was little change in their elemental composition. The reduction in volume was attributable to photoetching caused by SR, unlike the desorption of hydrogen in the case of exposure of hydrogenated DLC (H-DLC) film to soft X-rays. The ratio of the sp2 hybridization carbon and sp3 hybridization carbon in the hydrogenated Si-DLC films, sp2/(sp2 + sp3) ratio, increased rapidly from ~0.2 to ~0.5 for SR doses of less than 20 mA·h. SR exposure significantly changed the local structure of carbon atoms near the surface of the hydrogenated Si-DLC film. The rate of volume reduction in the irradiated hydrogenated Si-DLC film was 80 times less than that of the H-DLC film. Doping DLC film with Si thus suppresses the volume reduction caused by exposure to soft X-rays.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been extensively applied in industries owing to their excellent characteristics such as high hardness. In particular, there is a growing demand for their use as protective films for mechanical parts owing to their excellent wear resistance and low friction coefficient. DLC films have been deposited by various methods and many deviate from the DLC regions present in the ternary diagrams proposed for sp3 covalent carbon, sp2 covalent carbon, and hydrogen. Consequently, redefining the DLC region on ternary diagrams using DLC coatings for mechanical and electrical components is urgently required. Therefore, we investigate the sp3 ratio, hydrogen content, and other properties of 74 types of amorphous carbon films and present the classification of amorphous carbon films, including DLC. We measured the sp3 ratios and hydrogen content using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure and Rutherford backscattering-elastic recoil detection analysis under unified conditions. Amorphous carbon films were widely found with nonuniform distribution. The number of carbon atoms in the sp3 covalent carbon without bonding with hydrogen and the logarithm of the hydrogen content were inversely proportional. Further, we elucidated the DLC regions on the ternary diagram, classified the amorphous carbon films, and summarized the characteristics and applications of each type of DLC.

Sr-Al-O:Eu2+ phosphor was synthesized by firing from Sr-Al-Eu oxide obtained from metal-EDTA complexes on single crystalline MgO substrate. In this study, temperature dependence of luminescence on Sr-Al-O:Eu2+ phosphors were investigated. Emission peaks at 510 and 460 nm were detected at 300 K. On decreasing of temperature, the emission peak at 460 nm was fixed and emission peak at 510 nm increased to 518 nm at 20 K. These results indicated that emission mechanisms on 460 and 510 nm have different temperature dependence.

Amorphous carbon film (a-C:H) applications, such as hard disks, require films with nanometer thicknesses. In an indentation test, the obtained hardness values of these films are affected by substrates. On the indentation tests, we studied the effect of substrate hardness on films less than 200 nm in thickness. a-C:H and Si doped a-C:H (a-C:Si:H) films were deposited by electron cyclotron resonance plasma chemical vapor deposition onto aluminum (Al) and silicon (Si) substrates. The film thicknesses were approximately 140 nm. The hardnesses of the a-C:H film and substrates were obtained using a high-resolution indentation tester (pico-dentor) with a Vickers tip whose depth resolution was 0.04 nm. Maximum indentation loads were varied from 0.01 to 0.5 mN. The Martens hardnesses of films on the Al and Si substrates were 600 and 7000 N/mm2, respectively. On the a-C:Si:H film deposited on the Al substrate, the hardnesses increased from 1600 to 3900 N/mm2 with decreasing indentation load. The hardnesses of the films deposited on the Si substrate decreased from 5300 to 3500 N/mm2 when the maximum indentation loads were reduced. The effect of the substrates increased with the maximum load increasing. From these findings, the actual hardness value was determined to be 3600 N/mm2. These results indicate that the high-resolution indentation test achieved hardness estimations for nanometer-thick films with certain hardnesses.

Abstract
Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have excellent properties such as high hardness, low friction coefficient, high wear resistance, chemical inertness and so on. Because DLC film is considered as an effective coating material to improve their surface properties, this films are used in various applications such as parts for automobiles engines, hard disk surfaces, cutting tools and dies, and so on. DLC films consist of a mixture of sp2 bonded carbon atoms and sp3 bonded carbon atoms. Among them, ta-C film is known as the hardest and strongest film since it mainly consists of sp3 bonded carbon atoms. One of deposition methods to form ta-C is Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc (FCVA). The characteristic of this method is that it is possible to remove the droplets and form a high-quality film.. However, even though lots of mechanical components which require ta-C coating have three-dimensionally shapes, it is difficult to coat ta-C film three dimensionally by using FCVA process. At present, researches on 3D deposition of amorphous carbon films on three dimensional components is still insufficient, and investigation reports on the deposition mechanism and characterization of the deposited films are even more limited. In this study, we tried to deposit films on 3D components by the FCVA method and evaluated the microstructure and surface morphologies of films. Although films were coated successfully in the entire surfaces, different properties were showed depending on the location of components. These properties were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and laser microscope.

Amorphous carbon (a-12C) and amorphous isotopic carbon (a-13C) films were deposited from carbon and 13C targets, respectively to investigate isotopic effects on the electronic properties of amorphous carbon films. The 13C target was obtained by sintering 13C charcoal. The structure of the films was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. The density of paramagnetic defects was evaluated by electon spin resonance, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was carried out to determine the optical band gap of the films. There were no significant differences between the graphite structures of a-12C and a-13C films. On the other hand, the defect density of the a-13C film (1.1×1020 cm-3) was more than 10 times higher than that of the a-12C film (1.0×1019 cm-3) and the Tauc gap of the a-13C film (1.9 eV) was lower than that of the a-12C film (2.1 eV). These results indicated that 13C affects the electronic properties of amorphous carbon films.

Titania was investigated using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in terms of protein adsorption under various pH solutions. The multilayer device consisting of a titania layer on Au was used. A flow cell was used to introduce the protein containing solutions and the rinsing solutions on the titania top layer of the multilayer device. Phosphate solutions at varying pH with and without the human serum albumin (HSA) were injected into the flow cell. The SPR angle was determined as the angle with minimum reflection intensity. The observed behaviour of the SPR angle indicated that HSA was adsorbed on the titania film surface, and the obtained SPR angles depended on pH of rinsing solution for adsorbed HSA on the titania surface.

We have deposited cubic boron nitride thin films with a supersonic plasma jet chemical vapor deposition system with bipolar pulsed substrate bias. Deposited films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The cubic boron nitride content is observed to scale well with the degree of ion bombardment of the substrate and growing film, which is affected most drastically by the substrate bias pulse frequency, and positive and negative duty cycle. The magnitude of the negative substrate bias was also critical in depositing cubic boron nitride, with a threshold voltage of approximately 90 V necessary for cubic boron nitride deposition.

This research aims to develop novel mechanical coating materials consisting of carbon, boron and nitrogen, which is named “adamant” thin film coatings. Ternary diagram was described using measured data set of mechanical properties of various adamant films, and systematization of adamant films is performed on the diagram.
Carbon contents has significant influence for the mechanical properties of adamant films. Nanoindentation hardness of the film sharply decreased when the carbon content exceeds 50at.%. In contrast, the thermal resistivity of the film was improved by decreasing the carbon content. It is interesting result that the wear resistance improves when small amount of B was added in DLC film. Moreover, adhesion of platelet was suppressed on the B containing amorphous carbon films. These results lead us to open novel mechanical coatings using adamant materials.
