This paper proposes an iterative OFDM millimeter-wave receiver employing low-complexity decision-directed phase noise compensation (DD-PNC) to alleviate degradation due to the phase noise. High bit-rate OFDM transceivers based on the single-chip Si RF-CMOS IC technology in the 60-GHz millimeter-wave band have been extensively studied for wireless personal area network (WPAN) systems, and the relatively large phase noise in the phase locked loop (PLL) synthesizer severely degrades transmission performance. The proposed OFDM receiver iterates DD-PNC and decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) by exploiting the output of the channel decoder. DD-PNC estimates the phase noise each sampling time by using the decoder output, and then it removes the estimate from a time-domain received signal. In addition, DDCE estimates a channel impulse response by using the compensated received signal. Computer simulations demonstrate that in the 64QAM modulation with the coding rate of 3/4, the proposed receiver with DD-PNC and DDCE can perfectly remove the phase noise of -85 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset, and that it can alleviate the degradation of the channel estimation due to the phase noise.

This paper applies iterative multiuser detection employing a new channel estimation scheme to multicarrier interleave-division multiple access (MC-IDMA), called OFDM-IDMA, which is expected to offer improved spectral efficiency in mobile communications. The MC-IDMA transmitter uses both a low-rate channel code and an individual chip interleaver for each user. The MC-IDMA receiver. which this paper focuses upon, repeats the iterative multiuser detection and soft decision-directed channel estimation (SDCE) by exploiting log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) of the coded bits which the maximum a posteriori (MAP)-based channel decoders for all users provide. SDCE estimates channel impulse responses of all users by the least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. which aims to minimize the mean squared error between the received signal and its replica. This paper investigates the performance of MC-IDMA employing SDCE and compares it with those of three MC-CDMA techniques. Computer simulations demonstrate that MC-IDMA employing SDCE outperforms time-spread MC-CDMA and frequency-spread MC-CDMA, and that it can achieve almost the same bit error rate performance as chip-interleaved MC-CDMA while requiring lower complexity.

This paper proposes joint maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection and spatial filtering for MIMO-OFDM mobile communications: it offers excellent receiver performance even over interference-limited channels. The proposed joint processor consists of a log likelihood generator and a MAP equalizer. The log likelihood generator suppresses cochannel interference by spatially filtering received signals and provides branch metrics of transmitted signal candidates. Using the branch metrics. the MAP equalizer generates log likelihood ratios of coded bits and performs channel decoding based on the MAP criterion. In the first stage, the log likelihood generator performs spatio-temporal filtering (STF) of the received signals prior to the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and is referred to as preFFT-type STE Estimation of parameters including tap coefficients of the spatio-temporal filters and equivalent channel impulse responses of desired signals is based on the eigenvalue decomposition of an autocorrelation matrix of both the received and transmitted signals. For further improvement, in the second stage, the generator performs spatial filtering (SF) of the FFT output and is referred to as postFFT-type SE Estimation of both tap coefficients of the spatial filters and channel impulse responses employs the recursive least squares (RLS) with smoothing. The reason for switching front preFFT-type STF into postFFT-type SF is that preFFT-type STF outperforms postFFT-type SF with a limited number of preamble symbols while postFFT-type SF outperforms preFFT-type STF when data symbols can be reliably detected and used for the parameter estimation. Note that there are two major differences between the proposed and conventional schemes: one is that the proposed scheme performs the two-stage processing of preFFT-type STF and postFFT-type SF, while the other is that the smoothing algorithm is applied to the parameter estimation of the proposed scheme. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve excellent PER performance under interference-limited channel conditions and that it can outperform the conventional joint processing of preFFT-type STF and the MAP equalizer.

This paper proposes a MIMO-OFDM precoder that can minimize a BER upper bound of the maximum likelihood detector (MLD) under a non-cooperative downlink multicell co-channel interference (CCI) environment, Since there is no cooperation among base stations (BSs), it is assumed that information on the interference can be estimated at a mobile station (MS) and then fed back, to the desired BS for the precoder. The proposed scheme controls its precoding parameters under a transmit power constraint so as to minimize the BER upper bound, which is derived from the pairwise error probability (PEP) averaged with respect to CCI plus noise. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed precoder can effectively improve BER performance of cell edge users and is Superior in terms of BER to the eigenmode and the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) precoded transmissions which aim to maximize the channel capacity and to minimize MSE, respectively.

This paper proposes a novel MIMO system that introduces a heterogeneous stream (HTS) scheme and a blind signal detection method for mobile radio communications. The HTS scheme utilizes different modulation or coding methods for different MIMO streams, and the blind detection method requires no training sequences for signal separation, detection, and channel estimation. The HTS scheme can remove the ambiguity in identifying separated streams without unique words that are necessary in conventional MIMO blind detection. More specifically, two examples of HTS are considered: modulation type HTS (MHTS) and timing-offset type HTS (THTS). MHTS, which utilizes different modulation constellations with the same bandwidth for different streams, has been previously investigated. This paper proposes THTS which utilizes different transmission timing with the same modulation. THTS can make the blind detection more robust and effective with fractional sampling. The blind joint processing of detection and channel estimation performs adaptive blind MIMO-MLSE and is derived from an adaptive blind MLSE equalizer that employs the recursive channel estimation with the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. Computer simulations show that the proposed system can achieve superior BER performance with E-b/N-0 degradation of I dB in THTS and 2.5 dB in MHTS compared with the ideal maximum likelihood detection.

This paper proposes a new MIMO-OFDM precoding technique that aims to minimize a bit error rate (BER) upper bound of the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) in mobile radio communications. Using a steepest descent algorithm, the proposed method estimates linear precoding matrices that can minimize the upper bound of BER under power constraints. Since the upper bound is derived from all the pairwise error probabilities, this method can effectively optimize overall Euclidean distances between signals received by multiple antennas and their replicas. Computer simulations evaluate the BER performance and channel capacity of the proposed scheme for 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 MIMO-OFDM systems with BPSK, QPSK, and 16QAM. It is demonstrated that the proposed precoding technique is superior in terms of average BER to conventional precoding methods including a precoder which maximizes only the minimum Euclidean distance as the worst case.

This paper proposes a new minimum BER (MBER) criterion precoding method that is robust to imperfect channel state information (CSI) for MIMO-OFDM mobile communications. The proposed MBER precoding aims to minimize BER of the maximum likelihood detection (MLD), on the condition that the transmitter can obtain only imperfect CSI owing to channel estimation and quantization errors of the feedback CSI. The proposed scheme controls its precoding parameters under a transmit power constraint by minimizing an upper bound of BER which is derived from the pairwise error probability and averaged with respect to the CSI error. In contrast with a conventional power allocation MBER precoding method that is also robust to the CSI error, the proposed scheme does not make any assumption on the precoding parameters so as to reduce complexity. Thus, it is expected to outperform the conventional scheme at the cost of higher complexity. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed precoding method outperforms a conventional nonrobust MBER precoder and the conventional robust power allocation MBER precoding method when the amount of the CSI error is not considerable.

This paper proposes a new parameter estimation method for the MIMO-OFDM MAT receiver with spatial-temporal filters. The proposed method employs eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) so as to attain precise estimates especially under interference-limited conditions in MIMO-OFDM mobile communications. Recursive EVD is introduced to reduce the computational complexity compared to the nonrecursive EVD. The spatial-temporal prewhitening is placed prior to FIT because this arrangement is superior to that of conventional prewhitening posterior to FFT in accuracy of the parameter estimation. In order to improve tracking capability to fast fading, the proposed scheme applies a decision-directed algorithm to the parameter estimation by using log-likelihood ratios of coded bits. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can track fast fading and reduce the complexity to 18 percents of the conventional one, and that the spatial-temporal filtering prior to FFT outperforms the conventional one posterior to FFT.

This paper proposes a novel single-sideband quadrature phase shift keying (SSB QPSK) modulation scheme that utilizes a single-reference carrier frequency and transforms both baseband I and Q components into the same radio frequency band, whose width is exactly half that of QPSK. The modulation method is first derived and followed by the analysis of the matched filter demodulation. The analysis shows that there are performance degradations due to intersymbol interference (ISI) in the received signal and correlation in the received noise. To suppress the degradations, this paper employs a turbo equalizer for demodulation, in which the effects of ISI and noise correlation can be suppressed by a soft canceler and a noise whitening filter in the minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear equalizer, respectively. The computer simulations are then used to verify the proposed modulation scheme. At the transmitter, the root-raised cosine rolloff filter is employed for pulse shaping and Hilbert-transformed pulse generation. The truncation of the signal pulse is performed by the window function. The results show that the proposed modulation scheme outperforms 16-quadratic-amplitude modulation (16-QAM) with the turbo code in the Rayleigh-fading environment.

This paper proposes an OFDM mobile radio packet system that employs a new protocol of automatic repeat request (ARQ) for nonlinear multiuser detection (MUD) with log likelihood ratio combining (LC) on the appropriate bits. The conventional metric combining (MC) MUD separates collided packets by using nonlinear MUD, accumulates the Euclidian distance metrics of the received subcarrier symbols in the packets, and then achieves throughput improvement. However, when MC-MUD detects a packet error, it makes user terminals retransmit the same packets so as to reproduce the collision of the same packets. The proposed LC-MUD scheme simplifies the ARQ protocol and requires no reproduction of the same packet collision. The computer simulations demonstrate the superior throughput of LC-MUD to that of MC-MUD,and further improvement due to adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) optimized for the nonlinear MUD in LC-MUD.

This paper proposes a suboptimal algorithm for the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. The proposed algorithm regards transmitted signals as continuous variables in the same way as a common method for the discrete optimization problem, and then searches for candidates of the transmitted signals in the direction of a modified gradient vector of the metric. The vector is almost proportional to the direction of the noise enhancement, from which zero-forcing (ZF) or minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithms suffer. This method sets the initial guess to the solution by ZF or MMSE algorithms, which can be recursively calculated. Also, the proposed algorithm has the same complexity order as that of conventional suboptimal algorithms. Computer Simulations demonstrate that it is much superior in BER performance to the conventional ones.

This paper proposes a maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) for the differential space-time block code (DSTBC) in cooperation with blind linear prediction (BLP) of fast frequency-flat fading channels. This method that linearly predicts the fading complex envelope derives its linear prediction coefficients by the method of Lagrange multipliers, and does not require data of decision-feedback or information on the channel parameters such as the maximum Doppler frequency in contrast to conventional ones. Computer simulations under fast fading conditions demonstrate that the proposed method with an appropriate degree of polynomial approximation is superior in BER performance to the conventional method that estimates the coefficients by the RLS algorithm using a training sequence.

This paper proposes low-complexity blind detection for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with the differential space-time block code (DSTBC) under time-varying frequencyselective Rayleigh fading. The detector employs the maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) in cooperation with the blind linear prediction (BLP), of which prediction coefficients are determined by the method of Lagrange multipliers. Interpolation of channel frequency responses is also applied to the detector in order to reduce the complexity. A complexity analysis and computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed detector can reduce the complexity to about a half, and that the complexity reduction causes only a loss of 1 dB in average E-b/N-0 at BER of 10(-3) when the prediction order and the degree of polynomial approximation are 2 and 1, respectively.

This paper proposes a new blind adaptive MLSE equalizer for frequency selective mobile radio channels. The proposed equalizer performs channel estimation for each survivor path of the Viterbi algorithm (VA), and restricts the number of symbol candidates for the channel estimation in order to reduce prohibitive complexity. In such channel estimation, autocorrelation matrices of the symbol candidates are likely to become singular, which increases the estimation error. To cope with the singularity, the proposed equalizer employs a recursive channel estimation algorithm using the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse of the autocorrelation matrix. As another problem, the blind channel estimation can yield plural optimal estimates of a channel impulse response, and the ambiguity of the estimates degrades the BER performance. To avoid this ambiguity, the proposed equalizer is enhanced so that it can take advantage of the fractional sampling. The enhanced equalizer performs symbol-spaced channel estimation for each fractional sampling phase. This equalizer combines separate channel estimation errors, and provides the sum to the VA processor as the branch metric, which tremendously reduces the probability that a correct estimate turns into a false one. Computer simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed equalizers in the frequency selective fading channels.

This paper proposes an iterative maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) receiver for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) mobile communications. For exploiting the space, time, and frequency diversity, the low-density parity-check code (LDPC) is used as a channel coding with a built-in interleaver. The receiver employs the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm so as to perform the MAP symbol detection with reasonable computational complexity. The minimum mean square error (MMSE), recursive least squares (RLS), and least mean square (LMS) algorithms are theoretically derived for the channel estimation within this framework. Furthermore, the proposed receiver performs a new scheme called backward symbol detection (BSD), in which the signal detection uses the channel impulse response that is estimated one OFDM symbol later. The advantage of BSD, which is explained from the viewpoint of the message passing algorithm, is that BSD can exploit information on the both precedent and subsequent OFDM symbols, similarly to RLS with smoothing and removing (SR-RLS) [25]. In comparison with SR-RLS, BSD reduces the complexity at the cost of packet error rate (PER) performance. Computer simulations show that the receiver employing RLS for the channel estimation outperforms the ones employing MMSE or LMS, and that BSD can improve the PER performance of the ones employing RLS or LMS.

This paper proposes two new types of maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) receivers for multiple-input-multiple-output and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing mobile communications with a channel coding such as the low-density parity-check code. One proposed receiver employs the expectation-maximization algorithm so as to improve performance of approximated MAP detection. Differently from a conventional receiver employing the minimum mean-square estimation (MMSE) algorithm, it applies the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm to the channel estimation in order to track a fast fading channel. For the purpose of further improvement, the other proposed receiver applies a new adaptive algorithm that can be derived from the message passing on factor graphs. The algorithm exploits all detected signals but one of targeted time, and can gain a considerable advantage over the MMSE and RLS. This paper proposes a frame synchronization method for an adaptive array antenna (AAA) used in digital mobile communications. The proposed scheme, which is based on the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), calculates error signals by subtracting a training sequence convolved with an estimated channel impulse response from the AAA outputs and searches for the timing that minimizes the mean squared errors. Because the proposed scheme can effectively exploit delayed paths of the desired signal, it can improve the synchronization performance on frequency-selective fading channels. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can operate properly even in interference-rich fading environments and that it can significantly improve the synchronization performance.

As a blind linear-interference-canceller for DS-CDMA mobile communications, the orthogonal matched filter (OMF) minimizes the power of the output while maintaining constant power of the desired signal in the output. This paper studies the extension of OMF to an RAKE receiver (OMF-RAKE), which adaptively controls the steering vectors that determine the constraint. It also applies the QR-RLS algorithm to estimate the OMF-RAKE parameters and investigates a hardware implementation that employs a systolic array. Computer simulations show that OMF-RAKE with the QR-RLS algorithm and the systolic array structure can reduce the computational complexity to about a half that of the conventional RLS-type algorithm without degrading the BER.

This paper proposes a scattered-pilot-OFDM reception scheme employing turbo inter-carrier interference (ICI) cancellation in the fast varying fading environments of mobile communications. In the OFDM transmission, the orthogonality among the subcarriers cannot hold due to large Doppler shift, and the OFDM signal suffers from severe degradation due to ICI. The proposed receiver carries out two modes: (i) a coherent detection (CD) mode. and (it) a turbo ICI cancellation (TC) mode. Initially, the receiver performs the CD mode. When any decision errors are detected, it shifts from the CD mode to the TC one that carries out both the ICI cancellation and the channel estimation by using the decoder output (the log likelihood ratio). In addition, the iteration of the TC mode can improve the accuracy of the channel estimation and ICI cancellation ability. Computer simulations following specifications for the mobile reception mode in the digital terrestrial television broadcasting demonstrate that the receiver can effectively cancel ICI due to the fast varying fading, and that its average BER performance is much better than that of CD.

In W-CDMA systems, distributions of the interference power and the total transmit power both measured at base stations are respectively used for capacity analysis in the uplink and downlink. For accurate capacity analysis, these quantities must be in proportion to the traffic amount. However, these quantities are no longer in proportion to the traffic amount since the transmit power control maintains the signal to interference power ratio at a constant level. Although the relationship between these measurements and the traffic amount has been investigated, there are still challenges to calculate the statistics such as the blocking probability or the outage probability accurately. This paper proposes a method to calculate the blocking probability by transforming the distributions of these measurements into distributions that are referred to as "traffic equivalent distributions," where the distributions are automatically adjusted according to the traffic amount. The calculated results show good agreement with the results obtained by dynamic computer simulations in the uplink, and show good agreement in the downlink as well when the traffic load is light. Accurate calculation of the blocking probability using a feedback loop and the observation of the traffic equivalents is also reported.

This paper proposes an OFDM mobile packet transmission scheme that increases throughput by using nonlinear multiuser detection (MUD) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) with metric-combining. The scheme identifies users by detecting user identification (ID) symbols located at the head of a packet, and can separate packets that have collided by using MUD. It also forces the respective transmitters to retransmit the same packets so as to reproduce the collision if the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) detects some errors, and it uses metric-combining to decrease the number of retransmissions. The results of computer simulations show that the proposed scheme can provide twice the throughput of the conventional schemes.

In communication systems such as mobile telecommunication systems and the Inter-net, resource sharing among coexisting realtime and non-real-time services is extremely important to provide multimedia services. This paper analytically investigates the performance of the packet data control algorithm proposed in [9]. This algorithm efficiently uses radio resources by utilizing the remaining capacity that is not used by real-time services. The state probability vectors and transition probability matrices of both the real-time and non-real-time services are first derived and then the delay characteristics, the outage probability of voice users, and the outage probability of data user, are evaluated. A performance analysis with high bit-rate non-real-time services is also presented.

In this paper, we propose a simple and accurate transfer function model of the power amplifiers for mobile communications. Detail analysis yields a generalized model for AM/AM characteristics in classes AB, B, and C. The analysis includes the effect of drain current variation with input level variation. This model introduces a loadline variation ratio to indicate the change of drain current and to represent the operation classes in a small signal region. Further discussion leads to simplified approximate equations for the AM/AM characteristics, and the estimation procedures for the simplified model parameters. Using the derived procedures, an efficient power amplifier employing pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (PHEMT) is fabricated for the 2 GHz band. Finally. the various characteristics given by the model, simulator and measurements are compared and found to agree well in the range of 20 dB below the saturated output level. The model is very effective for characterizing the power amplifiers that are used in linear compensation techniques such as predistortion methods, due to its severe nonlinearity of AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics.

This paper proposes a new correction technique for a linear amplification with nonlinear components (LINC) transmitter. The technique, which is based on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criterion, estimates the gain and phase imbalance between the two amplifier branches. With information on the estimation, the imbalance is offset by controlling the amplitude and phase of the input signal that is fed into one of the two amplifiers. Computer simulations with a DS-CDMA system demonstrate that this method can compensate for the imbalance and sufficiently suppress the out-of-band distortion spectrum.

A blind interference canceller in the presence of subchip-spaced multipath channels for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) down-link system is considered. This technique is based on combining the existing blind interference canceller with a technique that involves assigning subchip-tap spacing to the Rake receiver. The proposed receiver minimizes the receiver's output energy subject to a constraint in order to mitigate the multiple access interference (MAI) along each multipath component, and then suboptimally combining all the multipath components. Moreover, it is able to mitigate the mismatch problem when subchip-spaced multipath components arrive at the blind interference canceller. It is known that optimal combining techniques perform a decorrelation operation before combining, which requires both knowledge and computational complexity. In the following, we have adopted a simpler but suboptimum approach in the combining of the suppressed signals at the output of our proposed receiver. Computer simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed receiver to handle subchip-spaced multipath components and still suppresses MAI significantly.

This paper proposes complex form BandPass Sampling (BPS) that is suitable for the software radio. This BPS utilizes offset frequency sampling and quadrature component interpolation. Three types of BPS techniques are first reviewed, which shows effectiveness of the proposed BPS technique. The major advantages over the conventional BPS techniques are: i) free from the DC offset that is caused by the leak of the sampling clock harmonics into the received signal, and ii) reduction of alias by the complex number processing in the signal detection. Next, detailed description of the BPS operation shows that it requires real-time interpolation for the time alignment of the sampled quadrature component. Finally, computer simulation shows that the misalignment generates distortion, and that effective interpolation techniques can reduce the distortion level less than -60dB even for wideband signals.

This paper proposes a new blind algorithm effective for multiuser detection with an adaptive array antenna. The conventional blind algorithm, known as the Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA), has two major drawbacks: (i) the convergence speed is not sufficiently fast for usual applications in mobile communications, and (ii) the algorithm is very likely to lock on the path with the largest received power, which means the signal with the second largest power can hardly be extracted. This paper introduces the Recursive Least Squares algorithm for CMA (RLS-CMA) in order to speed the convergence up, and additionally introduces the concept of the orthogonal projection into CMA so as to extract signals with weak power. The proposed CMA with Orthogonal Projection (CMA-OP) sequentially calculates the weight vector of each user under a constraint that the weight vector should be orthogonal to the estimated array response vectors of previously extracted users. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can operate properly in the Rayleigh fading channels under the two-user condition.

This paper proposes a suboptimal receiver for joint spatial-temporal filtering and multiuser detection in mobile radio communications using single carrier signaling. The proposed receiver is a reasonable approximation of the maximum likelihood (ML) based optimal receiver described herein. A cascaded connection of an adaptive array antenna and an hit multiuser sequence estimator is the basis of the proposed receiver. The major advantages of the proposed receiver over conventional adaptive array antennas are: ii delayed path components of desired signals can be effectively combined; 2) interference signals exceeding the degree of freedom; and 3) those having the same incident angle as that of desired path components can both be suppressed. The proposed receiver does not require prohibitively large computational complexity. Results of computer simulations presented in this paper show that the proposed receiver exhibits excellent performance even in severe multipath fading environments.

This paper proposes a new multiple-access (MA) scheme, coherent frequency hopping MA (CFHMA) with multiuser detection, which effectively obtains the diversity effect for realizing spectrally efficient mobile communications. CFHMA is fundamentally equivalent to a coherent fast frequency hopping frequency-division MA (FDMA) that incorporates low spreading factor direct-sequence (DS) code-division MA (CDMA). Multiple users occupy the same frequency band, and they are simultaneously detected by multiuser detection. There are several implementations of CFHMA. Two major techniques are introduced: coherent hybrid DS fast FH (FFH) (CHYB-DS-FFH) and interleaved FH (IFH). This paper focuses on IFH and discusses its principle of operation, transmission system configuration, and performance aspects. The results suggest the feasibility of a spectrally efficient mobile radio system.

This paper proposes a new blind algorithm for a linear interference canceller that can increase the capacity of CDMA cellular systems. Orthogonalizing Matched Filter (OMF) is one of the effective linear interference cancellers. OMF employs the Constrained Minimum Mean Square (CMMS) criteria for controlling the combining coefficients, and operates as the decorrelator, or the orthogonalizing filter, under the interference dominant condition and as the matched filter in the noise dominant condition. The new blind algorithm evaluates a steering vector which is essential for achieving good cancelling performance. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the received signal correlation matrix constitutes a time-varying code vector space, and the steering vector embedded in that space is obtained and utilized. The effectiveness of the blind method is verified by computer simulations under non-fading and fading environments.

This paper investigates the influence of long codes on RAKE reception in DS-CDMA mobile radio communications. Conventional DS-CDMA mobile communication systems employ long codes in order to ''whiten'' the interference signals from other cells. The conventional long code randomizes not only the undesired signals but also the different delay components of the desired signal which, therefore, become noises and are not combined in RAKE processing. This phenomena impairs RAKE performance. A method is proposed in order to reduce this impairment by introducing a new long code with higher correlation between chip intervals. An analysis shows the relationship between the auto-correlation and de-spread signals, and its influence on BER performance. Finally, computer simulations verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a new adaptive Interference Cancelling Equalizer (ICE) with a blind algorithm. From a received signal, ICE not only eliminates inter-symbol interference, but also cancels co-channel interference. Blind ICE can operate well even if training signals for the interference are unknown. First, training signal conditions for applying blind ICE are considered. Next, a theoretical derivation for blind ICE is developed in detail by applying the maximum likelihood estimation theory. It is shown that RLS-MLSE with diversity, which is derived for mobile radio equalizers, is also effective for blind ICE. Computer simulations demonstrate the 40 kb/s QDPSK transmission performance of Blind ICE as a blind canceller with two branch diversity reception under Rayleigh fading in a single interference environment. The simulations assume synchronous training; the canceller is trained for the desired signal but not for the interference signals. Blind ICE can be successfully achieved at more than - 10 dB CIR values when average Eb/No is 15 dB and a maximum Doppler frequency is 40 Hz.

This paper proposes Coherent-HYBrid Direct-Sequence Fast-Frequency-Hopping (CHYB-DS-FFH) CDMA with Adaptive Interference Cancelling (AIC) for cellular mobile communications. The features of CHYB-DS-FFH are symbol-by-symbol frequency diversity and low chip-rate DS multiplexing; both of which are based on a coherent FFH modulation and demodulation scheme. The combination of coherent FFH, space diversity, and AIC is very effective for reducing the performance degradation due to interference. Computer simulations demonstrate BER performance of a 2 hop 500-kHz-interval frequency hopping system using (i) a linear canceller or (ii) a nonlinear canceller. Both systems employ the two branch space diversity reception of 10 kb/s QPSK with FFH over a 1 MHz system bandwidth. In quasi-static channels, the average BER performance is 10(-2) with average E(b)/N0 less than 8 dB. In dynamic fading channels under full interference conditions, CHYB-DS-FFH with the linear adaptive interference canceller realizes a BER of 10(-2) at the average E(b)/N0 of 15 dB with maximum Doppler frequency f(D) of 5 Hz, whereas CHYB-DS-FFH with the non-linear adaptive interference canceller achieves the same BER at the average E(b)/N0 of 15 dB with f(D) equal to 30 Hz.
