      More details

  • Visual perception: vertical disparity corrects stereo correspond

    2013/09/02

    Languages: English

      More details

It is well known that humans perceive 3D structures of scenes using the horizontal difference of images observed by our eyes- referred to as horizontal (binocular) disparity. It is also known that vertical disparity produces the sensation of surface slant about the vertical axis.Intriguingly, it is not clear how the visual system uses vertical disparity for 3D perception. It could be used in the process of stereo correspondence, in the process of correcting horizontal disparity or in both processes. Here, Hiroyuki Mitsudo and Ayumi Sakai at Kyushu University and Hirohiko Kaneko at Tokyo Institute of Technology report that vertical size disparity is used to correct stereo correspondence for the perception of surface slant.

  • The relationship between pupillary baseline manipulated by mental effort or luminance and subsequent pupillary responses. International journal

Measuring pupillary response is a prevalent technique to evaluate mental states. It is indispensable to conduct a correction procedure for the pupillary baseline to get a meaningful conclusion from the pupillary response. However, the relationship between pupillary baseline and subsequent stimulus-evoked pupillary response varies among studies. In this study, we used the subtractive and proportional baseline corrections to analyze the results. Furthermore, we manipulated the pupillary baseline through mental effort or luminance in the baseline period and investigated whether the subsequent stimulus-evoked pupillary responses were affected. We found that the mental effort-evoked pupillary response was attenuated with a larger pupillary baseline manipulated by a higher mental effort, whereas it was unaffected with the baseline manipulated by luminance. Also, the luminance-evoked pupillary response was attenuated with a smaller pupillary baseline manipulated by a brighter disk, whereas it was unaffected with the baseline manipulated by mental effort. The results could be obtained from subtractive and proportional baseline corrections. Our results suggest that mental effort manipulated pupillary baseline interacts with the subsequent mental effort elicited pupillary response, but not with the luminance elicited pupillary response; the luminance manipulated pupillary baseline interacts with the subsequent luminance elicited pupillary response, but not with the mental effort elicited pupillary response. It is important to consider the ways of controlling the pupillary baseline and subsequent pupillary response simultaneously.

  • Temporal enhancement of cross-adaptation between density and size perception based on the theory of magnitude. International journal

The ability to estimate spatial extent is an important feature of the visual system. A previous study showed that perceived sizes of stimuli shrank after adaptation to a dense texture and that this density-size aftereffect was modulated by the degree of density. In this study, we found that the aftereffect was also modulated by the temporal density of the adapting texture. The test stimuli were two circles, and the adapting stimulus had a dotted texture. The adapting texture refreshed every 67 to 500 ms, or not at all (static), during the adaptation. The results showed that the aftereffects from a refreshing stimulus were larger than those under the static condition. On the other hand, density adaptation lacked such enhancement. This result indicates that repetitive presentation of an adapting texture enhanced the density-size cross-aftereffect. The fact that density modulation occurs in both the spatial and temporal domains is consistent with the theory of magnitude, which assumes that the processing of the magnitude estimation of space, time, and numbers share a common cortical basis.

Even as viewpoint changes with eye movements, postural changes, or self-motions, we perceive the world as stable based on the visual system’s environmental coordinate representation. It remains unclear which coordinate system is responsible for the contextual cueing effect, an implicit learning phenomenon for spatial arrangements. We investigated whether the contextual cueing effect is based on the environmental coordinate system or the body coordinate system when posture changes around the roll axis before and after learning. In our experiment, body position was changed between sitting and lying on one’s side before and after learning a task involving repeated visual search. The learning effect remained when the arrangement of objects was matched to the body coordinate system. Furthermore, we evaluated whether a natural image presented as a background could enhance the effect of the environmental coordinate system because it gives the spatial cue of the environment. The contextual cues that matched environmental coordinates were not used even if there is a background image; it is important that the background and contextual cues are matched to body coordinates in the learning and test phases.

We measured body movement during self-rotation about the yaw axis to investigate the effects of visual information on body control. In Experiment 1, subject rotated to the indicated angle, and we manipulated the relative velocity of optical flow which was the visual motion concomitant with the movement of subject. In the result, the response angles decreased as the relative velocity of optical flow increased. We assumed that the rotation velocity would decrease while the arrival time was constant. We hypothesized that as the optical flow velocity increased, the perception of self-rotation velocity increased and the subject would keep it constant unconsciously, resulting in that the physical rotational-velocity decreased and rotational angle also decreased. In Experiment 2, we found that the rotational velocity also decreased even though the subjects proactively ignored the visual motion. It suggests that the estimation of the velocity of the self-rotation was inevitably affected by visual information even if enough information from the vestibular system is available during self-rotation.

Previous studies show that the amplitude of pupillary light response (PLR) depends on the corneal flux density (CFD), which is the product of stimulus area by luminance. However, the contribution of CFD has been investigated only when the stimulus was centered on the fovea, whereas perceived luminance to pupillary response would reduce with stimulus eccentricity. Additionally, it has been shown recently that attentional state modulates pupillary response. In this study, we aimed to clarify the complete mechanisms of PLR by manipulating the stimulus size, eccentricity, luminance, and the participants' attentional states. We focused on four indices to examine PLR, that is, pupillary latency (PL), maximum constriction velocity (MCV), maximum constriction (MC), and mean pupil change (MPC). Results showed that PL was a function of CFD, whereas MCV, MC, and MPC were functions of both CFD and stimulus eccentricity. Furthermore, the magnitude of effect due to stimulus eccentricity for MCV and MC was different from that for MPC. These results provided new evidence that the different processing systems in PLR existed.

To process the motion of objects, humans need to consider information about up-down direction as obtained through various cues such as the gravity direction in the environment, visual polarity, and body direction. This study investigates the effects of up-down direction, as obtained from these cues on motion perception, with a focus on acceleration perception. We presented the participants with moving objects that had various acceleration speeds and measured the physical acceleration to be perceived as constant velocity. We examined the effect of the up-down direction from the visual polarity by changing the relationship between the up-down direction indicated by the gravity direction cue and the up-down direction indicated by visual polarity by manipulating the posture of the observer. The results showed that the up-down direction received by the gravity affected motion perception. Moreover, the up-down direction indicated by the visual polarity affected motion perception when the observer's body direction and the physical gravity direction were different. On the other hand, up-down direction indicated by the visual polarity did not affect motion perception when the body direction coincides with physical gravity direction. Overall, the results suggest that the up-down directions indicated by the gravity, visual polarity, and body direction are integrated non-linearly in the perceived acceleration of visual motion.

Research has shown that the pupil responds differently depending on the spatial frequency of the gazing stimulus. In this study, we examined the effects of spatial- and object-based attention on pupillary response as a function of spatial frequency using grating stimuli and filtered natural images by manipulating the participants' attentional state. Furthermore, we aimed to obtain the pupillary response to spatial frequency accurately by reducing the contamination of unintended spatial frequency components in the stimulus by using gratings with a Gabor envelope. We revealed that all stimuli could elicit large pupil constriction for an intermediate range (2-8 c/d) of spatial frequency and that both spatial- and object-based attention modulate the pupillary response function to spatial frequency. These facts may enhance Human Computer Interaction design to use people's attentional state.

Multiple studies have shown action to affect perception of motion. The speed intended in the generation of a motion by action affects the apparent speed of the motion. However, it was unclear whether action with no intention of speed affects the apparent speed of a motion. In Experiment 1, we investigated the apparent speed of a motion following a key press action. We manipulated the delay from the action to the consequent motion for shifting the timing of efference copy and found the apparent speed decreasing with increases in the delay. This could be because it is known that speed irrelevant action caused expansion of perceived duration of the consequent stimulus and it might have influenced the result in Experiment 1, we investigated the apparent duration of the action consequent static (Ex. 2-1) and motion (Ex. 2-2) stimulus. We found that the apparent duration was not changed with delay. Moreover, the apparent speed and duration had different characteristics on delay. These results were discussed in terms of the sense of agency.

Attentional direction can be different from visual direction. It has been shown that pupil response is affected by the luminance of attentional object. In addition, the frequency of pupil fluctuation has been shown to synchronize with that of luminance oscillation of attentional object. However the relationship between the degree of the synchronization and the change in the performance by the attentional state has not been investigated directly. In this research, we investigated the relationship between the power of the frequency component in the pupil fluctuation synchronized with the stimulus oscillation and the reaction time to the target stimulus, that is an index of the attentional state. We manipulated the attentional state of observers by changing the probability of the presentation location of target and measured the reaction time to detect the target and the pupil response. Results suggest that there is a correlation between the power of the frequency component in the pupil fluctuation synchronized with the stimulus oscillation and the attentional state.

Humans have various impressions for visual stimulus such as order/disorder and aesthetic preference, but the brain characteristics that each impression reflects are not readily apparent. We hypothesized that perception of order/disorder reflects the stimulus processing fluency. We conducted one preliminary experiment and two main experiments. The preliminary experiment simultaneously presented two stimuli to participants, who judged which stimulus was the more disordered. We scored perception of order/disorder using participants' responses. The main experiments used a same-different judgment task to assess the hypothesis. We presented two stimuli simultaneously, scored with perception of order/disorder. Participants reported whether the stimuli were the same or not. Participants easily judged whether the two stimuli were the same or not when the same-difference task included the stimulus perceived as orderly. Results suggest that the impression of order/disorder reflects the processing fluency for each stimulus.

We propose a method for presenting visual stimuli to change a driver's sensation of speed on a freeway: utilizing vection, one of the perceptual properties needed for self-motion and show that this method can be used on a freeway with CG simulation movies. Furthermore we investigated the relationship between the velocity of vection-inducing stimuli and the sensation of speed. Our study consists of three experiments. In all experiments, the simulated freeway 3D movies were presented on a wide hemisphere screen and the magnitude of the observer's sensation of speed was measured. Vection-inducing stimuli were produced by flickering in the boards on both sides of the freeway. This flickering yielded apparent motion. We set the speed of the vection-inducing stimuli and that of the driver's car as experimental variables. The observer compared two movies consecutively presented with different conditions and selected the one that gave a sensation of faster speed. The observer's sensation of speed increased linearly with the speed of vection-inducing stimuli. Our study suggests that controlling the speed of vection-inducing stimuli could enable the driver's sensation of speed to be manipulated in real freeways.

It has been reported that the strength and latency differ depending on the direction of vection. For example, the vection produced by expanding visual motion (forward vection) is stronger than that produced by contracting motion (backward vection). This perceptual anisotoropy could be due to the difference in the experiential accumulation of the expanding and contracting visual patterns in general living environment. In the present study, we aimed to show whether this assumption is valid or not. To clarify this, we did two experiments. In experiment 1, it was investigated whether a long-term experience affects vection, In the experiment 2, it was investigated whether a short-term experience would affect vection by learning.Through experiments 1 and 2, It was clarified that a long-term experience and the short-term experience influence vection.

This study investigated the effects of the gravity information on motion perception in depth. We measured the acceleration of the approaching object appeared to be constant velocity. The states of observer's orientation were upright, supine or prone. We examined the change by the changing body orientation of acceleration to be perceptually uniform motion. Results showed that observers perceived motion in depth with uniform velocity when the stimulus had deceleration physically for three condition of body orientation. The magnitude of deceleration was larger for prone and supine state than for upright state. We discuss the effects of risk by the moving object and influence of gravity information on the perception of moving object.

Human acquire visual information from wide area with saccade and perceive sharp and wide view. In that process, it is unclear what information is integrated and encoded across saccade. Our previous showed that the sensitivity of orientation discrimination was worse for the stimulus presentation across saccade than for the stimulus presentation during fixation. However, the sensitivity is better near the cardinal than oblique axes. These facts might indicate that the concept of the stimulus changes around cardinal axis but it does not around oblique axes. In this research, we examined whether the conceptual change of stimuli across saccade influenced the perceptual continuity across saccade. We used the stimuli of circular arc and facial expression based on the arc, and analyzed the responses to the change between the pre- and post-saccadic stimuli. The results showed no clear difference between the change of circular arc and that of facial expression.

We perceive self-motion by integrating visual, vestibular and somatosensory information. In this research, we manipulated visual information and vestibular/somatosensory information to simulate the translational motion of acceleration and the rotational motion about the horizontal axis (pitch motion). In addition, we introduced a time lag of the visual information from the vestibular/somatosensory information. Subjects responded the magnitude of self-motion. The results showed that the temporal lag between these stimuli weaken the perception of the translational motion and strengthen the perception of the pitch motion.

We focused on the pupil diameter variation as a possible index to predict position and size of visual attentional area. We hypothesized that the pupil diameter would change due to the stimulus property in the covertly attentional area even if not with the overt attention shifts. To verify it, this study measured the pupil size variation with the cuing task paradigm. The results suggest that the pupil diameter varies with the luminance of the stimulus in the covertly attentianl area.

In this study, we use the concept of entropy to quantify the perception of order and disorder. We defined the number of patterns perceived to be the same patterns in a group of different patterns as the perceptual number of state and then define perceptual entropy depending on the number. In experiments, two patterns consisted of dots were presented at the same time and subject judged whether they were the same or different. We examine the relation between the perceptual entropy and the perception of order and disorder of patterns. The results showed that the correlation between them is quite high, indicating that perception of order and disorder is related to perceived similarity of pattern.

Pupil diameter changes with psychological state and with brightness of visual stimulus. The property of the interaction between the two functions is not clearly known. In this research, we manipulated the psychological state of the observers using auditory stimuli under various brightness conditions and measured the diameter of pupil to investigate the interaction of the effects of psychological state and of brightness on pupil diameter. The results show that mean pupil diameter increased as the task became more difficult under low brightness level but that pupil diameter was almost unchanged by the difficulty of the task under the high brightness level.

The perceptual trajectory of a moving object often differs from its physical trajectory. This bias in motion perception could be related to the motion bias in the natural environment produced by gravitational acceleration. Our previous study showed that subjects perceived a moving dot with downward acceleration as having uniform velocity, suggesting that perceptual baseline is biased by the acceleration in the vertical direction,. And our previous study also showed that perceptual baseline of motion is biased along both of the direction of gravity and the direction of retina. In this study, we examined about this bias along two directions on perception of moving target with perceptual uniform velocity in details.

We often have an impression that perceived size (aspect ratio) of a real three-dimensional object is different from that of the two-dimensional picture of the object. In this research, we quantitatively measured this difference in perceived sizes of 3D and 2D representations of an object and discussed the cause of the difference if the effect would really exist. Observers adjusted horizontal size of the stimulus picture presented on a display to mach the apparent size of the original real object. The shape of the stimulus object was flat, concave or convex. The results showed that the perceived size of 2D image was different from that of 3D object at 185cm of viewing distance when viewing binocularly. Perceived horizontal size of 2D image was enlarged relative to that of 3D object. In addition, this effect decreased when viewing monocularly. These results indicated that existence of half occluded region which arises in binocular viewing, has an important role in this difference between perceived sizes of 2D image and 3D object.

We carried out experiments to measure the effect of the task workload on pupil diameter variability and psychological state using two kinds of task. One was time-based task in Experimentl, and the other was cognitive-based task in Experiment2. Pupil diameter (PD) was monitored and recorded by means of infrared video camera, while observers performed time-based task using auditory stimuli which was presented at different time intervals and cognitive-based task using auditory stimuli which was presented at different levels of the cognitive difficulties. After each trial, observers responded their subjective psychological state during the trial. In both experiments, the results showed that subjective responses of "activity", "time pressure" and "anxiety" increased according to increasing the level of the task workload. Moreover, using the same frequency band as that of heart rate variability (LF/HF), in both experiments, significant correlations were observed between the ratio of lower frequency components to higher components (LF/HF) of PD fluctuations and the subjective psychological state. These results indicate that LF/HF of PD fluctuations will be effective evaluation indices for mental stress, and the optimum bands for LF/HF of PD fluctuations change by the kind of task and the bands for cognitive-based task will shift to higher frequency than that for time-based task.

It is known that pupil diameter increases or decreases with variation of psychological state. We investigated the relationship between pupil diameter and psychological state during task execution using auditory stimuli. Pupil diameter was monitored and recorded by means of infrared video camera, while observers performed the task using auditory stimuli presented at time intervals of 1 s, 2 s and 3 s, for 60 seconds in each trial. After each trial, observers responded their subjective psychological state during the trial. The results show that subjective responses of "activity", "time pressure" and "anxiety" were increased, and the mean pupil diameter during 60 seconds period was also increased, when time interval of auditory stimuli were short.

We make double saccades when a target shifts during saccade. But we can learn to make single saccade to the final destination after observing the same stimulus presentation many times. This is called saccadic adaptation. It has been fully investigated the effect of saccadic adaptation on a single plane (same depth). In this study we investigated the effect of saccadic adaptation to the targets whose depth was different from that to produce saccadic adaptation. The results showed that saccadic adaptation occured for the targets being different in depth. We suggested that the calibration of version eye movement is independent of vergence (depth).

Visual field includes monocular and binocular fields. In the monocular field, binocular disparity is not available, so that the state of depth cue should be discontinuous. However we usually don't perceive the boundary between the fields. In this research we investigated why we perceive continuous depth in the situation. Subjects observed large random dot stereogram with sinusoidal depth modulation which covered monocular and binocular field, and responded the perceived depth of the surface. The result showed that perceived depth in the binocular field was extended to the monocular field. This mechanism must be responsible for the continuous depth perception around the boundary between binocular and monocular visual field.

We investigated the effect of body tilt on perceived direction of self motion. For this purpose we measured the direction of vection while manipulating the direction of visual motion and subject's body tilt independently. When body was upright, it seemed to be that misperception of self motion direction is due to the misperception ofstimulus motion direction. When body was tilted, additional biases that is linear to the angle of body tilt was observed. These results indicate that vestibuler and somatic information have effect on the perception of self motion.

It is important for animals to judge whether they can achieve their behavior in 3D-space. We hypothesized that the judgement is based on the restriction of their action and body features. In this research we investigated visual size judgement for action to test the hypothesis. In the experiment, two vertical lines were presented with variable separation as stimuli, and subjects judged whether they could pass their hand through the aperture. The results showed that the judgements were dependent on which hand, right or left, they imagined. This suggested that the restriction of real action affected the size judgements related to the behavior.

When a driver has to judge whether his/her car can turn right at ajunction, the driver needs to estimate time-to-contact (TTC) with cars approaching along an oppsite lane. In this situation, there are cues for depth information available to estimating TTC with the approaching car. In addition, the approaching car passes on the right side of the driver, not a frontal collision. In this case, the driver can make a pursuit eye movement to track the approaching car. This study investigated how these factors except retinal image expansion affect estimation of TTC with an approaching object. Results showed that linear perspective and texture gradient of depth cues had no effect on estimation of TTC with an approaching object. However, eye movements reduced the error of TTC estimation with a small approaching object.

When a scene is represented in a binocular stereoscopic display, depth distortions are perceived at the edges of the images in front of the screen. In our previous research (Ishigure et al., ITE, 1996), we showed that adding a virtual frame with a crossed disparity relative to the objects in stereoscopic images can eliminate the distortion. In the present study, we investigated how the depth distortion affects vergence eye movements and whether a virtual frame plays a role. The experimental results show : (1) when subjects perceive a depth distortion, the eyes converge to a point closer to the disparity of the screen than that of the object, (2) when the shape of the distorted object changes, convergence also changes, and (3) when the virtual frame has a crossed disparity, the point of convergence is located at the position indicated by the disparity of the object. The results indicate that presenting a stereoscopic image with an accompanying virtual frame prevents an undesired shift in convergence.

Binocular disparity, the differences between the images on two eyes, is one of the important cues for depth perception. In this study, we aimed to classify the individual differences in stereopsis which is the depth perception from binocular disparity and to identify the causes for the individual differences. We measured disparity threshold, upper limit to detect disparity and relative contribution of binocular disparity and texture cues for depth perception and compared them to the state of eye refraction and personal past experience of visual space for each participant. We also examined the methods to measure stereopsis efficiently. Results showed that there was a significant difference in stereopsis and suggest that the difference in the experience of space environment would be one of the causes for the individual difference in stereopsis.

This study investigated the influence of static and dynamic disparity on the control of body and action. Especially, we examined whether the distribution of vertical disparity in a large visual field affects horizontal head movements.
The results indicate that static vertical disparity in the surround affects the goal of head pointing to a target. The results also showed that vertical disparity oscillation did not affect unconscious head movement, except for a few observers. There results indicate that the information of visual direction from vertical disparity has some effects on the control of action, although there is individual difference in the process.

During their first year of life, infants' perceptual world undergoes dramatically change, especially in three-dimensional perception, which is important for survival in our environment. We investigated the developments of various kinds of three-dimensional information processing in infants.
To perceive the three-dimensional world, horizontal and vertical binocular disparities are important. We showed that the properties in processing horizontal and vertical disparities are different, and that sensitivity to horizontal disparity is still premature at 27 weeks of age. To examine infants' sensitivity to a pictorial depth cue, we compared monocular and binocular preferential looking for objects with a depth specified by height-in-the-picture-plane. This showed that 4- and 5-month-old infants fixated on the lower, apparently closer, figure more often under the monocular than the binocular presentation, providing evidence of their sensitivity to the pictorial depth cue.

The aim of the present research is to investigate individual differences in the strength and the spatial range of the visual attention. We measured detection sensitivity of a visual target in the conditions with attention and without attention. The double task and the single task paradigms were adopted in the main experiment. In the double task condition the observer responded only when the central task was correctly performed. It was possible to estimate the sensitivity change by comparing the results in these twoconditions. The Gabor pattern was uses as a stimulus and its spatial frequency was set at 0.5,1,2,4,8,and 16 cpd. Ten observers participated in this experiment. In the main experiment an apparatus was newly built which consisted of 6 mirrors and two monitors to make the viewing distance long enough to produce fine gratings. It was possible to measure spatial contrast sensitivity with frequency by using this apparatus.
The results show that the spatial contrast sensitivities were found to be lower with the central task than those without the central task for all observers, which means that when attention is not paid to the target area the detection sensitivity decreases. Clear individual differences exist in the spatial frequency characteristics of sensitivity reduction. These individual differences are categorized into four patterns. 1.Large sensitivity reduction, larger in high spatial frequencies, 2.Large sensitivity reduction, no spatial selectivity, 3.Small sensitivity reduction, larger in middle spatial frequencies, 4.Small sensitivity reduction, no spatial frequency selectivity.
