Trust has become a key factor in creating more believable and humanistic social robots with continuous improvements in the design of robots. Various determinants contribute to trust in human communication, which have not been studied in human-robot interactions. This study investigated how the benevolence and competence characteristics of a social robot affect the perception of trustworthiness in human–robot interactions. We conducted a between-subject experiment in which the participants were presented with four different combinations of benevolence and competence for a social robot, and their general, affective, and cognitive trust toward the robot was measured. The results indicated the effectiveness of both benevolence and competence in human-robot trust. Furthermore, the participants rated the benevolent-noncompetent robot as more trustworthy than other behaviors in terms of affective trust, but not cognitive and general trust, which revealed the primacy of benevolence in fostering affective trust, and modulating general and cognitive trust. However, the competent robot did not significantly influence cognitive trust. Consequently, benevolence and competence are two influential factors in human-robot trust, with the significant effect of benevolence, which can help design more anthropomorphic social robots in the future.

Although communication of non-verbal information such as affect or emotion plays important roles to maintain relationships among people, communication media have had emphasis on explicit information communication and not on affect communication. In particular, little is known about how people perceive communication of affect appropriate or not in given circumstances. This study investigated factors that influence people’s perceptions of the appropriateness of affect communication. Japanese male participants (N=167) were assessed their personality for overall trust, self-image, and empathy. Participants rated their perceptions of the appropriateness of communicating their affect in various situations involving combinations of nine factors from the seven possible responses of Display Rule Assessment Inventory. Ten factors were found to influence perceptions of the appropriateness of affect communication: valence of self-affect, valence of affect of others, social role, audience size, psychological distance, privacy, security, overall trust, self-image, and empathy. Implications for design of future communication media are discussed.

Affective management is a new concept which suggests that top managers should take stakeholders’ affective experiences into account when making their management decisions. To show that this concept could contribute to the improvement of management performance in organizations, this study investigated the correlations between the affectiveness of top management and management performance indices. Our questionnaire based on the Affective Management Scorecard was employed to assess top managers’ recognition of the importance, as well as the actual practices of affective management. Top managers from 43 Thai organizations participated in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to observe whether affective management indices would correlate with management performance indices, such as return on equity, return on assets, price to earnings ratio, and price to book value ratio. The findings showed that the results for organizations practicing affective management were positively correlated with their management performance in both profitability and good perceptions by investors.

The purpose of this study was to estimate personality and mental health through behavior data measured by acceleration and voice intensity sensors. Traditionally measuring methodologies require huge amount of time and resources for its operation. Techniques that attempt to classify and measure psychological states require acknowledgment of its dynamic behavior, and the issues intrinsic to the use of self report inventories. This research conducted experiments in real-life settings, minimizing intrusiveness to participants. A methodology for estimating personality and mental health in the work place was proposed. Sensor-based behavior analysis provided an unobtrusive and time-efficient mechanism to estimate psychological states through measurement of a selected set of behaviors. This methodology’s objective was to demonstrate existing correlations between estimated behavior and assessed personality and mental health. The results showed significant correlations between behavior and all personality and mental health states studied except for openness. This research provides insights into the analysis of personality and mental health states in the working settings. More broadly, the methodology proposed in this research provides implications for the development of recognition systems that will facilitate the attainment of personal and collective goals, which proves highly useful in today’s increasingly technicized societies.

In the practice of patent management, decisions on which patents should be preserved and utilized and which to abandon are crucial from the viewpoint of technology management strategy. As technology innovations evolve at different speeds across industrial sectors, patent management strategies may differ between sectors such as information and communications whose technology lifecycles are rather short, and sectors such as medicine whose research and development periods are long. Such differences in patent management practice, however, have not been fully studied. One of the major reasons for this is the availability of patent management information; records of patent practices are usually confidential and kept within organizations. Thus, detailed information is rarely available for comparative studies across organizations and sectors. In this study, patent renewal information, which is available to the public from the Japan Patent Office, is used to estimate the structures of patent preservation periods in seven Japanese industrial sectors. Information of 2,520 patents, which were registered between 1982 and 1999, and renewed or terminated between 1998 and 2002, was retrieved. Because the observation period was limited, Kaplan-Meier estimators were calculated. Obtained term structures were compared across industrial sectors. Possible factors that might have caused the difference were discussed. Pareto distribution, which had been assumed in previous studies for returns to patents, was shown not to be applicable for the above Japanese industries, while lognormal distribution was suggested.

For effective and efficient information acquisition, management, utilization and sharing of business transformation information based on Business System Transformation Model (BSTM), support of information technology is indispensable. This paper discusses the requirements for information technology that aims to support the operation of BSTM, and proposes the framework of XML(eXtensible Markup Language)-based support for BSTM. The concept of describing BSTM using XML is discussed first, and XML Schema to define the structure of XML documents for BSTM is defined. A number of XSLTs for various output styles are also proposed. Finally, the proposed framework is applied for cases to show its ability to describe BSTM information, to search necessary information from stored BSTM documents, and to cooperate with other applications for more integrated information management.

In the process of constructing and operating business systems, information about their rationale of design and modification, along with underlying strategic and environmental information, would significantly support the design or modification of other business systems. This study proposes a business system transformation model (BSTM) as a theoretical framework for acquiring and utilizing information about the transformation process of business systems. In this framework, status, transition process of business systems and their performance evaluations are historically recorded. The model enables designers of other business systems to refer to the records of similar cases in the past and take advantage of them. The proposed BSTM framework is applied to actual cases of logistics business systems, and its utility and operational problems are discussed.

This study investigated changes in pupil diameter when computer users were confused or surprised, and proposed a practical method to detect those situations. Pupil diameters of 5 male subjects aged between 20 and 23 were recorded while doing a memory task on a computer. Among the trials of primary memory task, 8 special trials were presented; 4 expected to cause confusion and 4 to cause surprise. Results demonstrated that if distributions of pupil diameter for given task conditions were known, subjects' confusion and surprise could be detected at rates of 25% to 65%. Detection rates varied depending on the settings of boundaries and the nature of the confusion and surprise conditions. The causes of this variation were discussed. Potential applications of this study include intelligent training systems that provide users with appropriate advice when users are troubled.

Recently information technology is being rapidly introduced into office work environments. At the same time, percentage of older people in the population is growing and will affect the structure of labor force. In this vein, training of middle-aged and elderly workers in computer operating skills is becoming more important. One of the training methods that is expected to be effective for such technology training is exploratory training. An experiment was carried out to investigate the validity of exploratory training in comparison with traditional instructional training when applied to the training of middle-aged and elderly persons in computer operating skill. Both young and older subjects participated. Subjects attended either exploratory or instructional training courses to learn skills to perform information search and input tasks in personal computers. Then the subjects performed some sample tasks and performance indices such as operation time, task accuracy, task cognition, and exploratory behavior were measured. The results show that validity of exploratory training for older subjects is different between people who are currently employed and those who are not. From the view point of operation time and task cognition, exploratory training seems to be more effective for people who are currently employed, while instructional training seems to be effective for people who are not. From the view point of task accuracy, instructional training is superior for both younger and older, currently employed and not employed. Training validity and task accuracy are not significantly different between age groups, while operation times differ significantly. The results suggest that effectiveness of exploratory training is influenced by the trainee's knowledge even if it is not directly related to the task. Subsequently, the trainee's occupation and background knowledge need to be considered in relation with the skill to be acquired when a training method is selected.

In order to help elderly workers learn new skills, it is important to consider their psychological characteristics. This study focuses on task cognition as one of the psychological aspects. This paper investigates the relationship between the task cognition and performances like the learning speed or operation time in the learning process. Age differences in this relationship were also investigated. Experiments were carried out with both young and elderly subjects doing a data input task on personal computers. The result shows that the level of task cognition and correlation between task cognition and performances are different according to ages, and significantly influenced by the educational program.

The focus of this panel will be on aging and technology. The intent is to demonstrate how technology can be used to help older adults remain independent, productive and connected to family, friends, resources and services. Actual examples, using a variety of formats, of the types of difficulties older people encounter when they confront technical systems will be provided. Interview data from older people regarding their experiences with technology will also be presented. Finally, suggestions for needed research and design solutions will be discussed. The overall intent of the panel is to energize the HCI community to focus on issues relevant to aging and technology. © 2004 ACM.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the process of development and loss of trust for information technology used in personal context such as households. The target information technologies were those that are can be assumed to have their intentions virtually, and that expected to change their behaviors through the time of interaction with human users. For this purpose, based on the psychological literature on interpersonal trust, we proposed a model of the process of development of trust of users for the target information technology. The proposed model was validated through an experiment and further refined. Furthermore, we derived hypotheses on what styles of interactions with agents may result in different changes in trust, and verified them in experiments.

The objectives of the present project is to develop a methodology on cognitive modeling which can be applied to risk analysis for the ship navigation tasks. The following outcomes were obtained by the present project for the last three years :
    (1) A methodology for cognitive task analysis was proposed and applied to a basic manoeuvring task, socalled course tracking task. The proposed method was based on synchronized data from eye-movement recordings and verbal protocols of ship navigators as well as operation and ship motion logs. From results of the task analysis, cognitive processes of a captain or a navigator could be acquired.
    (2) Based on the cognitive processes mentioned above, a navigator model was built for the course tracking task. The model describes a dynamic interaction between a navigator's cognitive processes and the states in manoeuvre. It represents attention allocation patterns, i.e., eye-gaze transitions, in a task network with a prototypical task probability and task time. The navigator model was validated its descriptive facility through some simulation runs using the identical scenarios to the experimental navigation sessions.
    (3) In addition to simple course tracking tasks, experimental sessions of collision avoidance with other ships were analyzed using the proposed method mentioned in (1). Based on the results of analysis, we elicited the navigator's cognitive processes during the collision avoidance task. A prototypical cognitive model was also built for this task.
    (4) A feature for estimating the navigator's mental workload in manoeuvring was equipped into the navigator model. This feature was based on the trace of the states in the navigator's short term memory.
    (5) The navigator model built by the present project, which was implemented on a PC platform, has an interactive graphical interface as well as with specific analytical features for the risk analysis. Simulated track plots and mental states of the navigator can be displayed on a computer screen. Simulation conditions such as environmental factors and the navigator's individual factors, which are changeable through the interface.
