    This paper describes the estimation method of transient sound radiating from a structure excited by random impact forces and the noise reduction design of a coin storage box of a coin counting machine. To represent the random impulses, the probabilistic model of random impact forces is derived by defining the collision position and time of impulses as probability variables and using the probability density functions of the variables. The probability density functions of the collision position and time are assumed as Gaussian probability distribution. The vibration displacement of the structure at each time step is represented through time-averaged function with respect to the above probability variables. The transient sound pressure is obtained by using a Rayleigh integral equation and the sound power is evaluated by integrating the sound pressure distribution in frequency domain. To check the accuracy of estimation based on the probabilistic model, the sound pressure and power radiated from the structure are measured. It is confirmed that the estimated frequency responses agrees well with the measured values in low frequency domain and that the proposed probabilistic model is effective for estimating the random impact sound. Next, using the above probabilistic model, the structural modification to reduce the sound power from the box is carried out. In this structural modification, straight dimples to cross the antinodes of the dominant mode of sound power are added. As a result of sound power measurement, it is confirmed that the proposed method is applicable to noise reduction design.

    This paper describes the moving characteristics of an in-pipe mobile robot using a wheel drive mechanism for inside bent pipes. The wheel mechanism can drive the wheels and also press them against the pipe wall using only a single actuator and a planetary gear drive mechanisms. The actuator torque while moving inside a bent pipe can be given by multiplying a constant of the radius of curvature and diameter of the bent pipes by the actuator torque while moving inside a straight pipe. The results of the calculation were in agreement with the experimental value of the prototype robot, which is 45mm in diameter and 130mm length by using flexible coupling. It can move automatically and smoothly inside the piping composed of the vertical pipe, the bent pipe, and the stepped pipe.

  • Sound Generating Mechanism of Frog Shaped Guiros

    A frog shaped guiro is a wooden percussion instrument with an open-ended cave. By rubbing dorsal fins like saw blades on a back of the guiro with a wooden stick, the guiro generates the sound like a frog's voice. The exciting force, response acceleration and radiating sound pressure were measured with accelerometers on the stick and guiro and a condenser microphone and then the relation between the impulsively exciting force and sound pressure was revealed. A three-dimensional solid model of the guiro was built by use of an X-ray CT scanner device and a finite element model composed of tetrahedral elements was then obtained. The FEM modal analysis revealed that the frog shaped guiro had four dominant modes of vibration which was characterized by motion of mouth of the guiro such as the yawn mode and grinding teeth mode. The frequency spectrum of the sound pressure radiating from the frog shaped guiro excited by sequential impulsive forces moving along the dorsal fins was theoretically estimated. Since the estimated sound pressure agreed well with the measured one, the sound radiating from the guiro like a frog's voice could be reproduced. It was also revealed that the variation of driving point mobility of the dorsal fins and amplitude of the exciting force affected to generate the sound like a frog's voice.

    his paper describes a new method to utilize redundancy of hyper redundant robots. To achieve dexterous motion of hyper redundant robot, joint inputs should be determined by taking account of i.e., the contribution of all actuators for the achievement of target motions and capability for unpredictable target motions in future is necessary. Two evaluation indices, the movability index of each link and the assistability index for target motion, are thus formulated with the angle distribution of column vectors of Jacobian matrix for each link. Then joint input to maximize or minimize these indices are derived based on an improved gradient projection method. The physical meaning of the proposed indices is also discussed by comparing with conventional manipulability measure. Motion control simulations and experiments with a planar 10R serial manipulator revealed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    This paper describes the motion control of hyper redundant robots with a learning control scheme based on linear combination of error history. For a hyper redundant serial manipulator to achieve the motion of its end effector as a main task with a number of additional motions of other links as subtasks, several effective methods to set subtasks are proposed. The objectives of these methods are to reduce the interference between main task and subtasks, and to prevent from partially singular configuration of the manipulator. The backward learning scheme is also proposed to obtain the optimum initial configuration. Several simulations and experiments with a planar 10 R serial manipulator reveal that the proposed methods are effective and useful.

    This paper describes the running static analysis of an in-pipe mobile robot using a wheel drive mechanism for straight piping. The wheel mechanism, which is driven by planetary gears and worm gears, can both drive the wheels and press them the wheels against the pipe wall using only an actuator and simple mechanisms. The relation among the size of the load, wheel revolution angle, and the pressing load against the pipe wall is theoretically analyzed and is experimentally examined. The traction force of the robot is calculable with motor driving torque, and the maximum traction force is estimated with no-load driving torque of robot and torque constant of the motor. From the running experiments by the prototype robot, which is 45mm in diameter and 130mm in length, the maximum traction force was at least 20 times the weight of the robot.

    This paper describes the estimation method of the sound power radiating from a four side fixed rectangular plate acoustically excited in a diffused sound field. First, the forced vibration of the plate excited by a plane wave in a free sound field has been solved. In the calculation, the distribution of the plane angles of modal exciting forces is taken into consideration precisely. Next, the stochastic model composed of random plane wave elements is assumed on the diffused sound field. The modal exciting forces and the forced vibration displacement are derived based on the ergodic process. Using the obtained forces and displacement, the equations for calculating the frequency spectra of the parameters for estimation are derived. The estimated frequency responses of radiating sound power coincided well with the measured values.

    This paper describes dimensional synthesis and motion control of a spatial network-structure robot. Direct kinematics of the robot which was composed of 2 modules and had 5 degree-of-freedom (DOF) was carried out based on direct kinematics of each module. Singular configuration of the module with 3 DOF was analyzed with transmission index. A prototype of the robot was improved so as to avoid the singular configurations and was examined with motion control experiments.

    The authors have been developing magnetic rubber dampers with a constraining layer (MRDC). They are generally installed on vibrating steel plates with the magnetic attractive force of the magnetic rubber layer. The damping performance of these MRDC depends mainly on the frictional loss due to the relative slip motion arising between the magnetic rubber layer and the vibrating steel plate. In the previous paper, the flexural vibration of a beam with a sheet of MRDC was theoretically analyzed by taking the frictional loss due to the relative slip motion into account and the equation to calculate the loss factor of the beam with a sheet of MRDC was derived. In this paper, the modal loss factors of the beam with a sheet of MRDC were calculated based on the derived equation, and those calculated values were compared with the data obtained experimentally using the method of resonance. Also, the relationship between the loss factor of the beam with a sheet of MRDC and material properties-magnetic attractive force, the content of ferrite powder, the thicknesses of constraining-, magnetic rubber-, and base-layers has been discussed.

    This paper proposes a step climbing mechanism for the " screw principle microrobot" to climb and pass automatically a step existing between pipes with different diameters without any special actuators nor motion control. For the purpose, the relation among the height of step, tire size, and driving torque is first theoretically analyzed and is experimentally examined. Based on the diagrams drawn using the obtained relations a step climbing mechanism to climb and pass both of concentric and eccentric steps between two pipes of 100mm and 75mm diameters is designed. A " screw principle microrobot" is then assembled by connecting the two step climbing mechanisms with a connecting coil spring. It can pass the steps automatically aud smoothly, also the running performance is experimentally examined using some pipes which have a step at different posrtrons.

    This paper describes the estimation method of sound power radiating from a peripherally fixed rectangular plate which is subjected to a sound excitation. The forced vibration of the plate which is excited by a distributed force has been theoretically solved by using modal analysis with Rayleigh-Ritz method. The basic equation for estimation has then been shown, and the equations of the frequency response of three parameters-total loss factor, radiation loss factor and input power for estimating sound power-have been derived. For a practical instance, the sound power radiating from a peripherally fixed rectangular steel plate, which was excited by the normal plane acoustic wave, has been estimated. The estimated frequency responses of the sound radiation power coincided well with the measured values obtained by the sound intensity method. This proposed method is hence effective to estimate the sound power radiating from a plate subjected to an acoustic excitation.

    The overall aim of this research is to establish an optimum design method to obtain quiet structures by modifying their shapes. For this purpose, the quantity to evaluate radiation loss factor was first led from approximate calculation, and then the relationship between mode shapes and radiation loss factors were investigated by using the evaluation quantity, because radiation loss factor is one of the important parameters required to estimate sound radiation power and has the strongest relation with sound radiation power among the parameters. As the result, the followings were found; (1) the evaluation quantity is the sound intensity with respect to the largest displacement point of vibration, (2) the mode shapes with minimum radiation loss factor have plural nodal lines and / or circles, and (3) radiation loss factor, namely sound radiation power, is more reduced when the number of nodal circles increases than when the number of nodal lines increases.

    The overall aim of this research is to establish an effective method for accurately estimating the airborne noise power radiating from the gear blank of aircraft gears.For this purpose, the estimation theory of sound power radiated from a circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder, which is a simple model of the gear blank of an aircraft gear, has been described.The forced vibration of the circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder was solved by assuming that the displacement of forced vibration is equal to the linear sum of the eigenfunctions of the displacements of the circular part and the cylinder part.Using the obtained result, the equations for calculating the frequency spectra of three important parameters-the radiation loss factor, driving point mobility, and total loss factor of the circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder, were derived.Calculating the frequency responses of the three parameters and measuring the spectrum of the excitation force, the sound power, when the circular plate was subjected to the axial and three-dimensionally excitations, were estimated, and compared with the measured frequency responses of sound radiation power obtained by means of the sound intensity method.The estimated freqyency spectra of sound radiation power coincided with the measured values.The derived estimation theory and the associated formulae are valid, consequently.

    A new gravity pendulum method has been proposed in order to precisely measure the tooth surface friction coefficient between a mating pair of gears, and the tooth surface friction coefficient measurement apparatus of gravity pendulum type has been produced based on the principle of the method. In the apparatus the center-to-center distance between the pair of gears is kept constant with a flexure hinge mechanism, and the practical rolling and sliding motions between the mating teeth is exactly realized. The tooth friction coefficient is calculated by equating the dissipated potential energy of the gravity pendulum during some free pendulum oscillations with the work done by the friction force between the mating teeth during the oscillations. Since the amplitude of the oscilllation is approximately equal to or less than one arc-degree, the tooth surface friction coefficient can be measured on a small area of the tooth surface. After investigating the influences of the horizontal oscillation of the ground where the measurement apparatus was set and the small clearences in the flexure hinge mechanism on the measurement of the free vibration of the gravity pendulum, the tooth surface friction coefficient was measured for a pair of internal and external gears. As the result it is found that it is required to oscillate the gravity pendulum with an amplitude which is equivalent to or larger than the width of HertzJan contact, thereby obtaining the precise value of tooth surface friction coefficient.

    In this paper we describe the estimation result of sound power radiated from a circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder, which is a simple model of an aircraft gear blank and is excited axially, radially or three dimensionally. The three parameters for estimation, the radiation loss factor, the driving point mobility and the total loss factor, were calculated according to the formulae derived in the first paper. Using these calculated parameters and measured excitation force spectrums, the sound powers radiated due to the excitations were estimated and compared to the measured values obtained by means of the sound intensity method. The estimated frequency spectrums of sound radiation power coincided with the measured values. Consequently, the estimation theory and the associated formulae are valid.

    A new method of tooth profile synthesis using vector equations for derivation of the tooth profile of a gear from the given tooth profile of the mating gear is proposed. The ideal tooth profiles of conical-external and-internal gears which engage with the inclined cylindrical-involute gears over the entire tooth width were derived using the proposed method. Moreover, the tooth profiles in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the inclined cylindrical gear were derived from the obtained ideal tooth profiles, and their characteristics were investigated. The following results were obtained: (1) the tooth profiles of the conical-external and-internal gears are almost equal to the involute curves in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the inclined involute gear; (2) the radii of the base circle of the involute curve are given by the equivalent tooth numbers of the conical-external or-internal gear; (3) the profile-shift coefficient is given by the center-to-center distance between the inclined involute gear and the conical-external gear, or between the cylindrical gear and the conical-internal gear; (4) the profile-shift coefficient changes nonlinearly along the axis of the cylindrical-involute gear.

    In this paper we describe the estimation theory of sound power radiated from a circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder, which is a simple model of an aircraft gear blank. The forced vibration of the circular plate with a solid shaft and a solid cylinder was solved by assuming that the displacement of forced vibration is equal to the linear sum of the eigenfunctions of the displacements of the circular plate part and the cylinder part. Using the obtained result, the equations for calculating the frequency spectrum of the three important parameters for estimation-radiation loss factor, driving point mobility and total loss factor-were derived.

    This paper describes the real-time measurement of in-plane vibration using a laser speckle interferometer with the double-aperture method. To detect the in-plane vibration in real-time, a new data processing system with an analog electronic circuit for calculating Fourier coefficients is proposed. The phase angle of the frequency component of interference fringes, which corresponds to the in-plane displacement of a target irradiated by a laser, is directly detected. The measurement system composed of the proposed data processing system and the laser speckle interferometer was applied to measure the in-plane vibration of a target excited by a piezoelectric actuator; the vibration displacement of about 5μm was detected with a sampling frequency of 470Hz and within a measuring error of ±0.5μm.

    This paper describes the real-time measurement of in-plane vibration using a laser speckle interferometer with the double-aperture method. To detect the in-plane vibration in real-time, a new data processing system with an analog electronic circuit for calculating Fourier coefficients is proposed. The phase angle of the frequency component of interference fringes, which corresponds to the in-plane displacement of a target irradiated by a laser, is directly detected. The measurement system composed of the proposed data processing system and the laser speckle interferometer was applied to measure the in-plane vibration of a target excited by a piezoelectric actuator; the vibration displacement of about 5μm was detected with a sampling frequency of 470Hz and within a measuring error of ±0.5μm.

    This paper describes an optimum motion control method for robot serial manipulators with multiple redundant degrees-of-freedom. The manipulability measure, which is given using the Jacobian matrix for both the position and posture of the endeffector of a serial manipulator, is proposed as the index for evaluating dexterity, and the manipulator is defined most dexterous when the manipulability measure has a maximum value. To drive serial manipulators most dexterously, two new methods, namely the optimum CP control methods with and without consideration of the posture angle of the endeffector, were proposed and experimentally studied for redundant planar 3R, 4 R and 5 R manipulators. Consequently, the optimum CP control method with consideration of the posture angle of the endeffector gave a better result : the manipulators were driven most dexterously over almost the entire driving range and high response was obtained.

    This paper describes the modal analysis of a thick cylinder with both ends free, based on Mindlin's thick plate theory. The equations of vibration of the thick cylinder were derived in consideration of shearing deformation and rotatory inertia, and were simplified and solved under assumption of the axial and circumferential deformations of the neutral cylindrical surface. Except for some low modes, the calculated natural frequencies agreed well with the values obtained by experimental modal analysis and with the modal analysis by use of Finite Element Method. Also, the calculated mode shapes compared well with those obtained by FEM modal analysis.

    This paper describes an analytical method for the simulation of the vibrational behavior of spatial serial manipulators composed of multiple elastic links. The adjacent links joint method was proposed to calculate the internal forces and moments acting interactively between two adjacent elastic links connected with an offset and spatial twist angles. The anisotropic stiffnesses and damping coefficients of the elastic link were derived from the synthesis of the bending, compressive and torsional stiffness of a cantilever as a simple model of the elastic link. The position and the postures of the joint between the two adjacent links can be obtained by solving a system of linear equations. The free and transient vibrations of a spatial 2-link manipulator were analyzed and experimentally examined. The calculated natural frequencies and amplitudes of vibratory acceleration agreed well with the measured values.

    This paper describes the new theoretical modal analysis of a thick cylinder. The five element-simultaneous second differential equations of elastic vibration of a thick cylinder, which are derived considering rotatory inertia and out-of-plane shear deformation, are rewritten into the ten element-simultaneous first differential equations by introducing new variables. The first differential equations can be solved under various boundary conditions by applying Euler's method. In this paper the equations were solved for a thick cylinder with both ends free. The calculated natural frequencies and mode shapes coincided with those obtained by the experimental and FEM modal analyses with practically sufficient accuracy for all modes.

    This paper describes measurement of in-plane vibration using a laser speckle interferometer with double-aperture method. A new optical system, which transforms interference fringes in a speckle into a line image on a CCD linear image sensor with an additional cylindrical lens, was proposed. From an experiment to measure static displacement, it was revealed that the cylindrical lens acted to detect fringes two-dimensionally and to average the distribution of optical intensity as same as scanning measurement and that the measuring accuracy could be improved by decreasing the influence of phase variation in the fringes. The interferometer was applied to measure the flexural vibration of a cantilever as an example, and the vibration displacement could be measured with 1.95kHz of sampling frequency and with 0.5μm of measuring error.

    The overall aim of this research is to establish an effective method for accurately estimating the noise power radiating from gear blanks. For this purpose, the basic theory for estimating the frequency response of radiated sound power was proposed in previous papers, and was applied to a circular plate with a solid shaft subjected to an axial load, in which the circular plate was a simple model of gear blanks. The basic theory was extended in previous papers to the circular plates excited three-dimensionally similar to that for helical gears. In this paper the basic theory has been further extended to include the rigid-body modes of vibration as well as the natural modes of flexural vibration of the circular plates. Consequently, the estimation of radiated sound power was much improved in a low-frequency range below 3 kHz, where the rigid-body modes existed.

    This paper describes measurement of in-plane vibration using a laser speckle interferometer with double-aperture method. A new optical system, which transforms interference fringes in a speckle into a line image on a CCD linear image sensor with an additional cylindrical lens, was proposed. From an experiment to measure static displacement, it was revealed that the cylindrical lens acted to detect fringes two-dimensionally and to average the distribution of optical intensity as same as scanning measurement and that the measuring accuracy could be improved by decreasing the influence of phase variation in the fringes. The interferometer was applied to measure the flexural vibration of a cantilever as an example, and the vibration displacement could be measured with 1.95kHz of sampling frequency and with 0.5μm of measuring error.

    To realize an actuator with many degrees of freedom which moves like a human wrist, a spherical motor with three-degree-of-freedom is tried, the spherical body of which is driven by ultrasonic linear actuators, and consequently, the spherical motor has no limitation on the position of its rotational axis in principle, and can rotate around an arbitrary spatial axis at an arbitrary speed. The spherical body of the motor is a steel bearing ball of 76.2mm in diameter. The six ultrasonic linear actuators are placed at every sixty degrees on the horizontal outer circumference of the ball; a pair of two actuators lying symmetrically regarding the center of the ball induce a rotational torque. In an experiment the ball rotated around the vertical z-axis at 15rpm, and also rotated around other spatial axes adjusting the outputs of the three pairs of actuator.

    In establishing an effective method for accurately estimating the frequency spectrum of noise power radiated from gears, a basic theory was proposed in previous papers. The associated equations were derived to apply the theory to a circular plate with a solid shaft chosen as a simple model of gear bodies. Exciting the circular plate in the direction of the shaft, the radiated sound power was estimated. It compared favourably with the measured values. In this paper, the basic theory is extended to estimate the sound power radiated when the circular plate is excited in the direction normal to the tooth surface of helical gears, namely in a spatial, three-dimensional direction. Decomposing the exciting force into the axial force, radial and circumferential bending moments, the natural modes of flexural vibration of the circular plate are theoretically analysed. Using the results, the new equation of driving point mobility, which is one of the three parameters required for estimation, is derived. Also, it is shown that the other two equations of total loss factor and radiation loss factor are applicable in the same from as previously derived.

    This paper describes the measuring accuracy of the laser speckle interferometer using a double-aperture plate for measuring the in-plane displacement of moving object. In this measuring system, the interference fringes are detected by a CCD linear image sensor, and the in-plane displacement is determined by calculating the correlation coefficient using the interference fringes detected before and after motion. The visibility of interference fringes, the speckle noise and the deformation of laser speckle and interference fringes are discussed experimentally and theoretically on their influence upon the measuring accuracy. From the results obtained, the measuring accuracy is improved by detecting the interference fringes two dimensionally, and the average of measuring error less than 0.15μm is obtained.

    A piezoelectric cycloid motor has been proposed by the authors, and experiments revealed that the rotational principle was effective, and the motor kept its rotational speed constant up to its maximum output torque. However, the maximum torque was small and the rotational accuracy was poor. In this report, to improve them, the motor is driven in a high frequency range including the motor's resonance frequency. Because the driving amplitude of the stator is increased by resonance, and the inertia effect of the stator is expected. As the results the maximum output torque has been increased to six times; the rotational accuracy has been much improved.

    In establishing an effective method for accurately estimating the frequency spectrum of noise power radiated from gears, a basic theory was proposed in previous papers using a circular plate with a solid shaft as a simple model of gear blanks. The basic theory was theoretically extended in another paper for the case in which the exciting force was applied in a spatial, three-dimensional direction, such as for helical gears. In this paper, the extended theory is applied to a circular plate which has a single helical tooth excited in its normal direction in order to verify that the extended theory is effective. The estimated sound power compared well with the value measured by the sound intensty method. Also, an interesting result is obtained; sound power radiated from a circular plate with a helical tooth is proportional to sin^2β, whereβ is the helix angle. In other words, the axial exciting force has large influence on the sound power radiated due to the flexural vibration of the circular plate.

    Various ultra-sonic motors, which have recently been developed, are driven by friction between their stators and rotators. They have a problem on wear and life as a result. This paper offers a new piezo-electric cycloid motor, which is rotated by a cycloid gear mechanism driven by four piezo-electric actuators. The motor therby avoid such a problem caused by friction. The motor steadily rotates at a theoretically calculated, constant speed up to its maximum output torque. Because the motor has no slip motion between its stator and rotator. The maximum efficiency of the motor is 25.5% at 16rpm.

    This paper offers an over-sampling method combined with zoom-FFT. The method is one of the methods which increases the resolving power of frequency in FFT analysis, and has the feature that it can choose arbitrary zoom ratio, i.e., arbitrary magnification of the resolving power of frequency. The results of investigation on the method are as follows : With the zoom ratio which make the fraction of normalized frequency some integer, the frequency component can be exactly extracted on its correct position; Smallest zoom ratio is sufficient for analysis; For Hamming window, the resolving power of two components is 2-normalized frequency under a zoom ratio smaller than 30; If the distance between two components is larger than 6-normalized frequency, Hanning window gives exact analysis with an amplitude error smaller than 0.1% and a phase error smaller than 0.1 degrees.

    The calculation formula for zooming FFT, by which zoom FFT analysis can be carried out on a personal computer without any special FFT instruments, was derived by applying the same procedure that the Fast Fourier Transform was derived from discrete Fourier transform. According to the derived formula, a BASIC program of zoom FFT was coded, and was applied for analyzing the gear transmission errors measured on two tested gear pairs. By selecting a zoom ratio equal to the lowest common multiple of their gear- and pinion-tooth number devided by the gear tooth number, their gear- and pinion-low harmonics were distinctly separated and extracted without piket fence effect. And the amplitudes of the pinion low harmonics corresponded well with the hearing noise levels of the tested gear pairs.

    The FFT has a restriction that the number of data to be analyzed must be a power of two. If the FFT hasn't the restriction, it will be very useful. The correct formula of the universal FFT, which analyzes the arbitrary number data, is then derived by using the discrete convolution concept. The calculational procedure is also presented in this paper. The universal FFT uses 4 times as large memory as the FFT does, and analyzes the data about one-tenth times as fast as the FFT does. The FFT supplemented with zeros, which is used when the data number is smaller than the power of two, induces various calculational errors while the universal FFT gives the exact amplitudes and phases of the original data, and is much faster than the discrete Fourier transformation (DFT).

    The data bases of DC Servo motors and reduction gears on the market are constructed. Based on them, the minimum capacity method is proposed as an exellent selection method of motors and reduction gears, which makes the capacities of motors minimum for given mechanisms and works. Motors and reduction gears are selected for some robot mechanisms and prescribed works by the minimum capacity method and by the impedance matching method respectively, and the amounts of energy consumption by the motors selected by the two methods are calculated and compared with each other. Contributions of the self-locking function and efficiency of reduction gears to the energy consumption are also discussed.

    Crank-length adjusting mechanisms have been proposed in order to change input-output relationships of arbitrary planar, spherical and spatial crack mechanisms and also to stop output motions of crank-and rocker mechanisms during rotations of their crack shafts. Structures of the crack-length adjusting mechanisms have been obtained by a number synthesis, after analyzing the relationships between the crank length and the displacement of a moving pair on the crack in the case where the pair moves along a straight line or an arc fixed on a rotating plane of the crank shaft. Some applications of the mechanisms to adjustable path and function generators have been shown.
