The power consumption of an air conditioner in an electric vehicle has a considerable impact on the cruising range. A high-performance magnetic refrigerator is therefore one of the important technologies needed for future electric vehicles. The requisite conditions for an in-vehicle magnetic refrigerator are higher with respect to cooling power density, temperature difference between the hot and cold sides, transient properties, and coefficient of performance than those of household refrigerators or home air-conditioners. We have devised a new model without a refrigerant in which heat is transported from the cold to the hot side through well-controlled thermal switches. A test rig to verify a heat transfer mechanism of the model and its numerical model have been created. The thermal resistance characteristics of the test rig have been experimentally derived. The characteristics have been input into the numerical model. The heat transfer mechanism and heat transport characteristics have been verified both experimentally and numerically.

A two-dimensional calculation code of He II heat conduction, using implicit method, has been developed. It considers a heat conduction equation of He II, omitting some parameters of the two-fluid model. Implicit method can avoid numerical instabilty from a mutual friction term. The computation time and computer power for the calculation can be saved. The temperature distribution of He II for various heat inputs, bath temperatures, and heater lengths may be calculated on a personal computer in short time.

Numerical stability of the heat transfer equation of superfluid helium is discussed in detail for one- and two-dimensional cases. From the viewpoint of diffusive property of heat conduction, the stability conditions for explicit finite difference equations describing the so-called 1/3-power law have been derived. The stability condition depends on the temperature gradient as well as the heat conductivity function and the mesh spacing. To maintain the numerical stability, the time step should be lowered for low temperature gradients. A linearization of the 1/3-power law for low temperature gradients is useful to suppress the numerical instability, but a threshold of the linearization should be selected as low as possible not to affect numerical results. Finally, the validity of the stability conditions is demonstrated by performing two-dimensional numerical simulations of the natural convection of liquid helium with λ-transition.

Heat transfer characteristics in a pressurized He II channel, including a copper wall, were investigated experimentally and numerically. Temperature distributions in the channel and the wall were measured when the copper wall was heated. It was confirmed that the wall temperature increased remarkably in occurrences of a phase transition of helium in the channel. The value of stored energy in the copper wall when its upper or lower portion are heated locally are smaller than when the center portion of the wall is heated locally. Heat conduction through the copper heat transfer across interfaces (Kapitza conductance) and heat transport by internal convection of He II were all considered in the present two-dimensional time dependent numerical analyses. The numerical results were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results when the channel was filled with He II.

The role of oxygen in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ/Ag thick films has been investigated by measuring the coherence lengths and irreversibility lines in two samples with extra oxygen contents of δ=0.17 and δ=0.27. The coherence lengths were estimated by measuring magnetization through the application of a magnetic field both perpendicular and parallel to the c axis. The coherence lengths of the two samples have conformity in the ab plane component, but in the c axis component. the coherence length of the sample with the extra oxygen content of δ=0.27 is 30% larger than that of the sample with the extra oxygen content of δ=0.17. This result led to understanding that the anisotropy parameter decreases when oxygen is introduced in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ thick films. Further, the irreversibility line, observed by measuring electric resistance, laid on the higher magnetic field and temperature when oxygen was introduced. Therefore, the reduction of anisotropy by introducing oxygen made the electronic coupling between the CuO2 superconductor plane stronger.

Power generation experiments have been performed for disk MHD generators with different channel shapes. The increase in the enthalpy extraction ratio by enlargement of the area ratio has been shown experimentally, and the highest enthalpy extraction ratio of 18.0% was achieved. The experimental results have shown that for the generator with the large area ratio, the wall static pressure in the MHD channel is kept lower than that for the small-area-ratio generator. These phenomena suggest that a high Hall parameter is obtained by enlargement of the area ratio. Furthermore, the swirl ratio at the channel exit was measured and was characterized by the ratio between Hall current and mass flow rate of the working gas.

Heat transport characteristics in a channel containing He II have been experimentally investigated. Three model channels are examined. The geometries of model channels are 170mm in length and 7.0mm wide with gaps of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5mm. Both ends of the channel are open to He II at the atmospheric pressure. One of the side wall of the channel is heated uniformly. When heat flux less than the λ transition heat flux qλ is applied, the center portion of the channel has the highest temperature. In this case, internal convection of He II dominates the heat transfer mechanism. When heat flux lager than qλ is applied in the channel placed vertically, He II at the center of the channel changes to He I firstly, and then the He I flows upwards through the channel with further increase of the heat. In consequence, the top of the channel has the highest temperature in the steady state. On the other hand, in the case of the horizontally placed channel, the highest temperature is kept at the center of the channel even after the λ transition occurs.

MHD power generation experiments have been performed for disk-type generators with different channel shapes. The increase in the enthalpy extraction ratio due to enlargement of the area ratio has been shown experimentally and the highest enthalpy extraction ratio of 18.0% was achieved. The experimental results have shown that for a generator with a large area ratio, the wall static pressure in the MHD channel is kept lower than that for a small area ratio generator. These phenomena suggest that a high Hall parameter is obtained by enlargement of the area ratio. Furthermore, a swirl ratio at the channel exit was measured and was characterized by the ratio of the Hall current and the mass flow rate of the working gas.

Changes of temperature distribution of He II in a channel and velocity distributions of super-fluid and normal fluid components of it, which cannot be measured by experiments in the present stage, are simulated by means of a two-dimensional time dependent numerical calculation. A finite element scheme is applied to the two fluid equations which include the Gorter-Mellink mutual friction term. This calculation can clearly simulate not only the case in which the channel is filled with only He II but also the case in which the λ transition occurs in the channel. From the simulated results of the velocity distributions of the two components, it is confirmed that the heat is transported by the one-dimensional internal convection for the heat flux less than the λ transition heat flux. It is also found that two-dimensional natural convectional flow is formed when He I is generated by the heat flux larger than that of λ transition, and the flow strongly influences the heat transport in the channel.

Boiling heat transport characteristics of pressurized (1atm) He II in a vertically placed rectangular cross-sectional channel have been experimentally and analytically investigated. A wire heater is attached at the midpoint of the channel. The temperature distribution of helium in the bottom closed channel is almost the same as that in the bottom opened channel when the boiling occurs. It is considered from the present results that almost all of the input heat is removed by a natural convection when the boiling occurs and low temperature helium is supplied mainly from the top of the channel. When the heat generation ceases, the temperature of the heater in the bottom opened channel recovers to the He II bath temperature faster than that in the bottom closed channel. The time for the recovery does not depend on He II bath temperature for the case of the bottom opened channel.

Various boiling heat transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated in a vertical channel opened at both ends to a pressurized (1 atm) He II bath. A wire heater is attached at the center of the rectangular cross-sectional channel. In the boiling states, the removed heat through the upper side of the channel increases with the increase of input power to the heater, while the removed heat through the lower side of the channel is kept constant. A temperature rise in the channel when the aspect ratio of the channel cross section is 1 is smaller than that when the aspect ratio of 7 after He II to He I transition occurs. The critical values of heat flux at which He II to He I and nucleate boiling to film boiling transitions occur in the vicinity of the heater surface in this channel are larger than those in a channel closed at the bottom, respectively.

Boiling heat transfer characteristics have been experimentally investigated in a channel opened at both ends to a pressurized (1atm) He II bath. Different trends in temperature fluctuation in the channel were observed between the cases when a heat transfer surface is facing upward and downward. This difference in characteristics is considered to be caused by a flow of helium in the channel which is induced by a flow of bubbles. Values of overall heat transfer coefficient between the heat transfer surface and the He II bath indicate a cooling ability of the He II channel quantitatively.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of time dependent heat transfer in pressurized He II channel terminated by a copper rod have been carried out. Heat flux is applied in the form of a sinusoidal wave. As the frequency of heat flux increases, the change of copper and He II temperatures converge for the case of constant application of the effective value of heat flux. And no dispersion of Kapitza conductance is observed within the frequency range from 0 to 40Hz. On the basis of the mutual friction counterflow combining with the heat conduction in copper and Kapitza conductance, a one-dimensional heat transfer model has been developed, which can well predict the experimentally obtained time dependent heat transfer characteristics.

The method to drive high-temperature superconducting magnets efficiently has been studied without using an external power supply and a current lead. The method of using a semiconductor such as a thermoelectric element to the cryogenic side is very compact and can be driven in a simple structure compared to an external power supply. The experiment was performed using a commonly used bismuth tellurium. It was confirmed that it is possible to generate a large and stable current. However, considering the cooling performance of the cryogenic refrigerator used to cool the high-temperature superconducting magnet, it became clear that the device with higher conversion efficiency is needed. A variety of devices were investigated. It was able to find the element which improved the characteristic by low temperature with high conversion efficiency.

A high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet excited by a thermoelectric element has been developed. This HTS magnet has the advantages of compactness and lightweight in comparison with conventional HTS magnets. Because an external power supply is not necessary for this magnet system to maintain an operating current.
The main components of the magnet system are a thermoelectric element, an HTS coil and a cryocooler. The thermoelectric element is made with p-type Bi2Te3 semiconductor pellets and cooled by the first stage of the cryocooler. The size of the thermoelectric element is 2 mm square and 1.5 mm in thickness. The HTS coil is wounded with Bi-2223 wires and cooled by the second stage of the cryocooler. The inner diameter, outer diameter and the height of the coil are 120 mm, 236 mm and 31 mm, respectively.
The magnetic field at the center of the magnet of 1.4 T was demonstrated in the present experiment with the operating current of 155 A. The temperature of the hot end and cold end of the thermoelectric element was 100 K and 60 K. The coil temperature was about 10 K. It took 6.5 hours to reach the target magnetic field of 1 T with a constant heat input of 25 W. The long charging time to the rated current might be a serious problem. However, this problem should be manageable using an external power supply during charging. The external power supply is separated with the magnet unless the magnet is in case of charge.

The development of environmentally benign and highly efficient power plant is important to reduce CO2 emission and to save energy resources. The present research was focused on a plasma MHD generator, and performances of the supersonic closed loop with the disk MHD generator were investigated. The closed loop is a major system in the MHD power plant, and noble gas circulates inside the closed loop. In the present experiment, argon was used as working fluid. Experimental results are summarized as follows.
The high temperature (>1900K) argon circulation was carried out successfully during 2.4 hours. The heat gain and loss of argon was investigated, and a large heat loss was found at the diffuser and the exhausting duct although an energy efficiency of recuperator was high. The large heat loss was ascribed to water cooling at the diffuser and the exhausting duct. At the same time, the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was suggested. The argon temperature and the heat loss calculated under an assumption of four times larger heat transfer coefficient have shown a good agreement with experimental ones. The pressure ratio inside the loop was discussed, and the result has indicated that the total pressure at the upstream of nozzle throat is decided by the total temperature and the mass flow. On the other hand, the total pressure at the downstream is determined by the total mass in the loop and the total pressure at the upstream. The power generation was carried out, and a good correlation between the load resistance and the Hall voltage was observed. However, the power output remained very small.

The objective of present study is to improve the isentropic efficiency of the plasma MHD generator which is expected to provide very high thermal efficiency.
In the fiscal year 2000, the plasma formation in the supersonic nozzle was investigated experimentally. The experimental results indicated that the plasma formation is difficult at low seed fractions and depends on nozzle load resistance. Furthermore, it is suggested that the shock wave appears and as a result, the flow velocity is reduced significantly at high seed fractions, although the plasma formation becomes easy. As a result, the enthalpy extraction remained small and it was only 9 %.
The nozzle load resistance was optimized in the fiscal year 2001 and the enthalpy extraction increased from 9 % to 14 %. At the same time, the power output increased up to 650 kW and the advantage of high flow velocity in helium was confirmed. The isentropic efficiency was also improved significantly and the measured voltage-current curve showed higher voltage compared with that for argon.
In the fiscal year 2002, the operating condition was optimized further and an introduction of an inlet swirl was adopted. Therefore, the enthalpy extraction increased up to 30.3 % and the isentropic efficiency was remarkably improved (=63 %). The large power output of 1200 kW was also obtained. Heat transport characteristics of superfluid helium (He n) in channel segmented by different types of spacer having several holes have been investigated on the basis of both experiment and numerical analysis. The heat transport performance has been examined for the following spacers : (a) FRP spacer without any hole, (b) FRP spacer with several holes of 2 or 4 mm diameter, (c) porous spacer made of fine powder of sintered Al_2O_3, (d) porous spacer made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is more flexible than Al_2O_3. The average diameter of the porous is about 1μm. It is expected that helium flow is induced in the channel because of a fountain effect when the porous spacer is applied.
The λ-transition heat flux when we use the spacers having holes of diameter 2 mm and 4 mm is almost the same. This value is about 1.5 times larger than that in the case of using spacer without any hole. The λ-transition heat flux depends on the porosity of the spacer. A relatively high cooling performance can be realized when the porosity is only about 5%. These results lead to the understanding that the introduction of some holes in the spacer is a very effective way to suppress local temperature rise in the He II channel.
The λ-transition heat flux increases remarkably when the porous spacer is used instead of the FRP spacer with holes of 2 or 4 mm in diameter, because Hen flow is induced in the heated channel by a fountain effect. It is also found that the use of porous spacers between Hell channels is effective to suppress a steep temperature rise in the heated channel not only when the channel is filled with He II entirely but also when normal helium (He I ) is generated in the channel.

The objective of present study is an improvement on performance of the plasma MHD generator which is expected to provide very high thermal efficiency.
In fiscal 1997, effects of an area ratio on a relation between the isentropic efficiency and the enthalpy extraction were investigated experimentally and an optimization of the area ratio was also made. As a result, the highest isentropic efficiency was achieved and it was 46.5 %. At the same time, the highest power density of 140 MW/mィイD13ィエD1 was demonstrated. The experiments have indicated that a high isentropic efficiency required for a commercial power plant is possible only for the Disk MHD generator with a small area ratio.
An introduction of an inlet swirl was adopted in fiscal 1998 in order to improve the enthalpy extraction. A new concept was adopted to the design of the swirl vane, and in order to design the swirl vanes, three-dimensional numerical simulation was carried. The simulation indicated that thin swirl vanes are useful to reduce fluid-dynamical loss. In the experiments with the inlet swirl, the enthalpy extraction was improved remarkably and as a result, the highest isentropic efficiency increased up to 54.3 %. This is the highest for the plasma MHD generator.
In fiscal 1999, behavior of flow field and plasma in the MHD generator was investigated and a lot of important data was accumulated. The data have suggested that a large positive swirl and a high Mach number were kept in the MHD generator and this led to the high isentropic efficiency. The present study has encouraged us to proceed to the next step in which an achievement of higher performances than the present ones is a main objective.
