    In this study, an experimental system for in-situ observation of the thermal imprint process was constructed, and the material behavior from the initiation of transcription to product removal was precisely studied. Based on the results obtained, effect of the temperature and pressure on the transcription behavior and the shape accuracy was investigated, and the principles to obtain good replication were discussed. In addition, the exfoliation behavior of the material from substrate in the cooling stage after the transcription was observed and its characteristics were discussed.

    This paper deals with a fundamental study on the weld structure of thin-wall injection molded polypropylene plates. Effects of the mold temperature and plate thickness on the weld characteristics were investigated. In the experiment, several measurements were performed; distribution of the optical retardation, specific latent heat for fusion, V notch depth and width, and tensile strength of the specimen. The results indicated that the fountain flow of the melt occurred in the filling stage even with a plate thickness of 0.3 mm. It was also shown that molecular orientation in the weld region was relatively low. Thermal property measurement showed that crystallinity of the molded specimen was affected not only by the mold wall temperature but also by the plate thickness. Mechanical strength reduction by the existence of the weld was experimentally confirmed through the tensile test, and it was shown that the thin-wall polypropylene plate molded at high mold temperature broke from the weld region under small strain.

    This paper deals with a technique to control the penetration of the assist gas in gas assisted injection molding by controlling the heat transfer within the molded polymer. This study is based on a conjecture that assist gas penetration is dominated by the temperature distribution in the molding. In this experiment, two types of heat transfer control techniques were applied; one uses a combination mold wall that consists of two materials having different thermal conductivities, the other uses radiation heating with a carbon dioxide laser. A numerical simulation of one dimensional heat transfer in the mold thickness direction was also performed to discuss the relationship between the temperature distribution and the gas bubble shape in the cross-sectional area. As a result, it was shown that the measured polymer thickness surrounding the gas bubble reasonably matched the estimated thickness of the reduced temperature region. This indicates that the temperature distribution in the cross-sectional area dominates the gas penetration thickness. It was also shown that the length and width of the gas bubble are dramatically changed according to the temperature distribution realized by the heat transfer control technique described above.

    This paper deals with a novel process for separating mixed plastics such as found in industrial waste by utilizing unsteady heat transfer to the plastics and so-called melt-sticking between the plastics and a heated solid surface. First the concept of the novel separation process was proposed, and then the feasibility of the concept was experimentally examined by using an experimental setup, in which particles of various types of plastics were pressed against a heated plate. The results clearly showed that the heated plate temperature at which the melt-sticking between plastic particles and the heated plate takes place markedly varies with the types of plastics, and that the temperature is also influenced by the materials of the heated plate. These results suggest that the melt-sticking phenomenon can be applied for separating mixed plastics. Based on a hypothesis that the melt-sticking phenomenon takes place when the interface temperature between the heated plate and plastic particles exceeds a certain temperature, which varies with the types of plastics, and by using a theoretical solution of unsteady heat conduction between two semi-infinite bodies, the heated plate temperature at which the melt-sticking occurs was successfully estimated for various types of plastics and heated plate materials, and separation ability of this process was discussed.

    This paper deals with a model that can predict flow-ability improvements due to radiation heating for the injection molding process. The model is derived through considering the thermal energy balance within a molded product, and can provide a quantitative estimation without the need for complex heat transfer calculations or numerical simulation of the polymer flow. Experimental molds, equipped with a transparent window (heat-resistant glass), were used to mold simple disc shaped samples. Infrared radiation, which was provided by a high power infrared lamp, was introduced from the outside of the mold and directly irradiated the molten polymer to maintain its flow-ability during the filling stage. The weight of all the molded products were measured with an electronic balance to investigate the effect of the following molding parameters: wall temperature, melt temperature, flow rate of the melt, product thickness, radiation absorption coefficient, and irradiation intensity. Flow available time, meaning the time that the polymer melt can be kept flowing in the cavity, was introduced. It was calculated by considering the thermal energy balance that includes all the parameters listed above. The estimation of the molded product weight by the model agreed well with the experimental results under various molding conditions.

    Two dimensional numerical calculation of heat generation and transport in GaAs MESFETs with high frequency gate bias has been performed. In order to study the conjugate nature of electronic and thermal phenomena in the semiconductor devices, electron particles, momentum and energy equations, and the energy equations of optical and acoustic phonons as well as Poisson equation are solved simultaneously. Calculated results exhibited the effect of temperature distributions to the current charactreistics as high frequency gate voltage variation.

    This paper deals with the basic mechanism dominating the wavelike flow mark generation in polymer injection molding. There have been a number of papers describing the relation between molding conditions and flow mark generation in polymer injection moldings, but very limited information about the basic mechanism dominating the flow mark generation has so far been reported. In the present paper, the authors paid attention to the development of the frozen polymer layer adjacent to the mold wall, just behind the melt-mold contact line, so as to evaluate analytically the bending strain in the developing frozen layer due to contraction of the polymer during solidification, and tried to correlate the flow mark generation with the bending strain. The result clearly showed that the aspect ratio of flow marks estimated from the bending strain in the frozen layer agrees well not only with the aspect ratios of the actual flow marks measured by ourselves, but also with the ones reported in the literature. The authors therefore concluded that the basic mechanism dominating the flow mark generation can be attributed to the bending strain in the developing frozen layer due to contraction of polymer during solidification.

    This paper deals with the visualization of particle recirculation behavior and with the estimation of heat transfer enhancement due to particle convection in a fluidized bed. In order to examine the trajectory of a fluidized particle in a bed, fluorescent particles put into the fluidized bed were illuminated by a UV light, and their motion was recorded on a VCR. The Visualized results enabled us to evaluate the contact period and contact frequency between the fluidized particles and a heat transfer surface immersed in the bed, as well as the particle velocity in each region of the bed. Using the visualized recirculation behavior of a fluidized particle, heat transfer enhancement due to "particle-convection" was estimated, and the contribution of the effect to the total heat transfer was discussed.

    This paper deals with an innovative injection molding process whose concept has been developed from the heat transfer point of view. The process enables improvement of the optical quality and promotes the molten flow of injection-molded polymer products by applying infrared radiation on the moving polymer melt being injected into the mold cavity. The effects of CO_2 laser heating on the skin layer of the molded polymer were observed using a mold with transparent windows. The residual birefringence frozen in the irradiated specimen was measured, and the surface transcription of the irradiated polymer strip was investigated. The results showed that the birefringence in the skin layer of the injection-molded polymer strip was reduced, and the surface transcription of the molded polymer strip was improved by CO_2 laser heating. Another advantage is that the processing time is only slightly increased by applying this method.

    This paper deals with the contributions of stress and molecular orientation to the birefringence induced in an injection molded polymer strip. It is well known that the birefringence observed in polymeric materials is dominated both by the stress and by the molecular orientation produced in the polymer. This means that, in order to apply the measured birefringence for evaluation of the degree of molecular orientation, which results in anisotropic mechanical, optical and/or thermal properties of the molded strip, the stress-based birefringence and molecular orientation based birefringence must be separated from the total birefringence. In this paper, therefore, the generation of birefringence due to stress and molecular orientation was discussed on the basis of the master curve of the birefringence-strain coefficient.<br>Using the master curve in conjunction with the Boltzmann's superposition principle and time-temperature reducibility, the process of birefringence generation within an injection-molded polymer strip was numerically estimated. The results showed that the birefringence induced by the thermal strain is mainly due to molecular orientation in the core region, while the birefringence in the surface region is also dominated by the thermal stress. On the other hand, it was also shown that polymer melt flow during the filling stage of the injection-molding process results in the birefringence purely due to molecular orientation, and that the birefringence tends to be frozen in the surface region.

    In this paper, we report a numerical study concerning the effects of thermal molding conditions on the residual stress and birefringence developments frozen in an injection-molded polymer strip. In our numerical calculation, the residual stress frozen in the injection-molded polymer was considered in terms of flow-induced shear stress and cooling-induced thermal stress. Profiles of the residual birefringence were obtained from these stresses using the rheooptical law. The numerical results showed that the residual stress frozen into the injection-molded polymer strip is mainly affected by the cooling rate of the strip while the residual birefringence is dominated by the temperature and velocity of the injected polymer melt. This indicates that the residual stress and residual birefringence can be reduced by controlling the heat transfer during the filling and cooling stages, respectively.

    This paper deals with the experimental examination of microscale mechanisms of heat transfer augmentation of fluidized beds; the direct-contact heat exchange from a heat transfer surface to fluidized particles was estimated for particles of various sizes. Contact period and frequency between the particles and heat transfer surface were measured by employing an optical technique, and the heat transfer between them was analytically evaluated. The obtained results showed that unsteady heat conduction to the fluidized particles plays an important role to the heat transfer augmentation, especially under the condition of incipient fluidization while the contribution of direct-contact heat exchange evidently decreases with increasing the particle diameter and fluid velocity.

    In this study, the authors studied mechanisms of heat transfer augmentation around the stagnation point of an impinging air jet laden with solid particles. Primary attention was paid to the heat transfer augmentation around the stagnation point of gas-solid two-phase impinging jets due to unsteady heat conduction between the laden particles and heat transfer surface. The unsteady heat conduction to a solid particle was numerically studied and effects of thermal properties of both solid particles and the heat transfer surface were examined. The results clearly showed that the amount of heat conducted to a particle is influenced not only by the thermal properties of a particle but also by the ones of a heat transfer surface. Using the obtained results, the authors introduced an evaluation procedure which can separately assess the contribution of unsteady heat conduction. This procedure utilizes the change of unsteady heat conduction by the thermal properties of heat transfer surface material; the contribution of unsteady heat conduction is inversely evaluated by comparing the numerical results of unsteady heat conduction with the heat transfer augmentation measured for the different heat transfer surface materials.

    This paper deals with an experimental study on the influence of cooling conditions at the cavity walls on the sink generation appearing in an injection molded polymer product. By employing a test mold which has two transparent windows, the processes of sink generation and solidification of the injection molded polymer were observed under various molding conditions. The observed results showed that sinks appear on the surface just before the whole polymer solidifies. This means that the development of sinks must be influenced by the rigidity of the solidified layer generated at the beginning of the cooling stage. This implies that the sink generation can be controlled by the temperature of the cavity walls.<br>In order to confirm whether the sink location can be controlled by the cooling rate of the cavity walls, sink generation was examined in tests using asymmetrical cooling of the cavity walls. The results are summarized as follows:<br>(1) When the temperature of one cavity wall is 10-20K higher than that of opposite wall, sinks appear only on the surface adjacent to the hotter wall.<br>(2) On the contrary, if the hot wall temperature exceeds the glass-transition temperature of the polymer, the sinks appear on the opposite cold surface.<br>It was thus concluded that the location of sink can be controlled by the cooling rate of the cavity walls.

    This paper dealt with the effects of heat condition within the wall on the heat transfer of a patchily heated tube : considering both the circumferential and longitudinal heat conduction within the tube wall, the heat transfer coefficients and the wall temperature profiles of the tube were numerically obtained. The numerical results show that the substantial heat transfer coefficients of the heated region decreases with longitudinal wall conduction. but circumferential wall conduction has little effect on the substantial heat transfer coefficients. This means that the effects of circumferential and longitudinal wall conduction on the heat transfer of the patchily heated tube may be independent. Making use of the concepts of "pseudo-fin", the amount of heat conducted to both the circumferential and longitudinal unheated regions and the apparent heat transfer coefficients of the heated region were analytically predicted. These results agree well with the numerical ones whatever the shape of the heated region.
