Investigation on friction coefficient between steel and fibers as a part of paper-based clutch facing was carried out under different normal loads and sliding velocity using friction tester that steel rods nipped fibers in dry or lubricated condition. Fibers are made of cotton, aramid and carbon. Base oil is mineral oil. Lubricant additives are oleic acid, ZDTP, Ca-sulfonate and succinimides. Friction coefficient under dry conditions show lower than that under lubricated conditions. Friction coefficient show large value under small load and lubricated conditions, and the "μ-v" slope show almost constant in all conditions.

Friction characteristics between cam and follower are numerically calculated using an approximate method. The model is based on partial EHL theory which consists of a film thickness formula[Ref.1] modified from Pan-Hamrock's formula[Ref.2]) considering surface roughness and the mean contact pressure-compliance relationship (GW model[Ref.3]). The effects of non-Newtonian behavior of lubricant and surface temperature rise are taken into account for the calculation of friction force. The result of this approximate method is compared with the previous study (Tanaka et al. [Ref.4]) which solved simultaneously Reynolds equation, elasticity equation, etc. and the experimental results obtained by a made apparatus similar to the system. The validity of approximate method is also examined, for mainly the effects of amplitude and directional properties of surface roughness.

The influence of the piston rotation on the frictional forces between the piston and the cylinder has been studied experimentally for a swash plate type piston pump and motor. In order to measure the rotational speeds of the piston, the capacitance detecting method have been employed for the piston with the slits. The frictional forces have been measured by means of Piezo-type load washers connecting with the floating cylinder and the rotational speeds of the piston have been measured at the same time. The relations between them are discussed.

The lubrication modes of line contacts between vane and camring in oil hydraulic vane pumps with and without intravanes have been investigated. First, the variations of the radial acting force of a vane were calculated on the basis of the results measured for the dynamic internal pressure in the four chambers surrounding a vane in addition to the results in the previous paper(4). Next, distinctions of the lubrication modes were made with Hooke's chart which represents an improve-ment over Johnson's. Finally, the influence of the boundary conditions in the lubrication region on the fluid film lubrication was examined by calculating the film pressure distributions. The results show that the high-frequency pressure ripple acts as the force causing separation of vanes from the camring, that the lubrication mode of the vane tip is the rigid-variable-viscosity region, and that discharge pressure higher than 7 MPa exerts a great influence on the oil film pressure in the large arc section because of the Piezo-viscous effect.

Measurements of the dynamic internal pressures near the vane of a pressure balance type of an oil hydraulic vane pump with intravanes have been made to provide essential information for the study of the pump dynamics and control, the pump design and the analysis of tribological problems in the sliding components. The influences of the discharge pressure and rotating speed of the vane on the dynamic pressure in four chambers surronding a vane have been investigated. The results indicate that the surge pressures of the chambers at the instant of the start of discharge and closure are affected by the rotating speed, and the pressure in the intravane chamber maintains approximately constant values with marked effect of pulsating discharge pressure.

This paper describes an experimental investigation on transient traction coefficient using a twin disc rolling-sliding frictional machine, which simulates the actual contact condition of rail and wheel under the low slip ratio and low velocity. The experimental results show the effects of temperature, relative humidity (RH), water, surface roughness and hardness, which have important influence, on the traction characteristics. As a result, with increasing temperature around test discs, traction coefficient decreased under constant RH condition. Increasing RH resulted in a decrease of traction coefficient under constant temperature condition. Furthermore, with increasing sliding distance under dry condition, traction coefficient increased linearly at first and reached to a peak, and then decreased a little and became steady. Up to traction coefficient reaches a peak after a test start, surface roughness and hardness decreased a little, and during traction coefficient decreased after the peak, surface roughness and hardness increased rapidly due to wear. On the other hand, as sliding distance increased under wet condition, traction coefficient increased linearly at first gradually and became steady. Until reaching maximum traction coefficient after a test start, surface roughness increased a little and hardness decreased a little. After then, surface roughness decreased a little, and hardness increased due to work hardening. Moreover, the primary factors, which traction coefficient increased immediately after a test start, were associated with surface roughness, hardness, and such boundary films as oxide film, reaction film.

The motion characteristics of a slipper bearing in the swash plate type piston pump and motor have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The motion of the slipper bearing has been measured by means of eddy current displacement sensors. The mathematical model of the slipper bearing has been indicated considering asperity contacts of surface roughness, comparing experimental results. It is found that (1) the numerical calculation results correspond to experimental ones, (2) the slipper bearing may swing at the same cycle as rotation of the swash plate, (3) the motion of the slipper bearing in pumping action differs greatly from that in motoring action, and (4) the friction phenomena between the cylinder and the piston, and on the spherical bearing affect on the motion of the slipper bearing.

An experimental study on the transient traction coefficient of wheel/rail contact under wet conditions has been carried out by means of a twin disc type of rolling-sliding frictional machine under the low slip ratio and low speed. It is shown that the traction coefficient has been affected by various parameters such as rolling speed, contact pressure, slip ratio, surface roughness and hardness. Consequently, the traction coefficient increased linearly and gradually at first and then became steady and finally slowly decreased as sliding distance increased under wet conditions. With increasing rolling speed, the traction coefficient decreased. However, the traction coefficient was not nearly changed by an increase in the contact pressure. With an increase in low slip ratio, the traction coefficient increased slowly and then became steady. Although sliding distance increased, visible adhesive wear has not arisen under water lubrication in the boundary lubrication regime.

This paper describes an experimental investigation on relationships between transient traction characteristics and hardness distribution in the direction of the depth of roll-slide surface of twin discs. Hardness was measured using a nanoindentation tester as well as a micro Vickers hardness tester to cover wide range of indent depth. The experimental results show that hardness of worn surface under dry condition was higher than that of virgin surface. Hardness of worn surface under wet condition, however, changed little.

Transient traction characteristics between rail and wheel have been investigated with a rollingsliding contact type of frictional machine under dry condition. The experimental results show the effects of contact pressure, rolling velocity, slip ratio, surface roughness and hardness, which have important influence, on the traction characteristics. Until traction coefficient reaches the peak after a test start, surface roughness and hardness decrease. During traction coefficient decrease after the peak, surface roughness and hardness increase rapidly by wear on the rolling-sliding contact surface. Moreover, it is thought that the primary factors, which traction coefficient increase immediately after a test start, are based on surface roughness, hardness, and boundary films (oxide film, reaction film, adsorbed film).

A piston of swash-plate type of axial piston pump and motor, rotates as well as reciprocates in a cylinder. and uneven contact may easily occur in the sliding part between them due to oblique reaction force against the cylinder axis. The effects of annular grooves at both ends of cylinder and piston top on the friction characteristics have been investigated from viewpoint of the stiffness of the sliding part ends for the cylinder and the piston top, following the previous paper. It is clarified that the annular groove of the cylinder end affects the friction characteristics more greatly than that of the piston top in the case of the annular groove depth of 5 mm. There is an optimized depth of the annular groove for the decreased friction force when the annular groove is installed at either the cylinder end or the piston top.

This paper describes an explanation based on temperature variations across oil film of the dimple mechanism in EHL conditions. Experiments were carried out with a ball-on-disk type apparatus and temperatures of both the sliding surfaces and the oil films were measured by an improved infrared technique with two kinds of the infrared transmitting disk. Measuring the temperature of the disk surface, a disk coated by Cr layer on the contact surface was used in order to radiate infrared by itself as well as cut off the radiation from the ball surface and the oil film. When the temperature of the ball surface and the oil film, a disk which was not coated was used. Film thickness was measured by the optical interferometry technique. The temperature of the dimple was sometimes above 300K. The dimple formation can be explained by the viscosity wedge action estimated by the measured temperature differences between both the sliding surfaces.

Effects of stiffness of sliding part end between piston and cylinder on the friction characteristics have been investigated experimentally for rotating-swash plate type piston pump and motor. The friction forces were measured by means of Piezo-type load washers under several stiffness of the sliding part end and forcing the piston to rotate. Since the oil whirl phenomena may occur on the piston for certain working conditions, the friction forces were evaluated during two rotations of the swash plate. The friction losses were estimated on the basis of the experimental results. It was clarified that the maximum friction forces and the mean friction losses decreased markedly with decreasing the stiffness, and that the maximum friction forces were almost independent of supply pressure, rotational speed of the swash plate and overhang ratio (bearing width) with low stiffness of the sliding part end.

The paper, part 1, has proposed a mathematical model of rotor motion for piston rod driving type bent axis type axial piston pump in order to study lubrication characteristics between rotor and spherical valve plate. The numerical calculations have been carried out under operating conditions and specifications. The calculation results have been compared with experimental ones given by previous papers. It is found that (1) the rotor moves to delivery area and its axis tilts to one with its rotation, (2) film thickness between the rotor and the spherical valve plate minimizes at inside sealing part and the center of fluctuation locates near neutral point of the delivery area, and (3) the minimum film thickness and friction moment are greatly influenced by rotational speed, viscosity and dimension of sealing part on the spherical valve plate.

In order to investigate lubrication characteristics between rotor and spherical valve plate, a mathematical model of rotor motion has been presented for a piston rod driving type bent-axis-type axial piston pump. The forces and the moments acting on the rotor through the piston rod have been derived from geometric analysis of rotor driving mechanism with the piston rod. An analysis model on mixed lubrication between the rotor and the spherical valve plate has been shown using Average-Flow-Model by Patir-Cheng and the contact theory by Greenwood-Tripp, respectively. In addition, bearing part between the rotor and shaft, supporting element of the rotor, has been regarded as squeeze film bearing. The simulation for the lubrication characteristics, such as minimum film thickness, its occurring position and friction loss between the rotor and the spherical valve plate, will be demonstrated in the paper, part 2.

Running-in tests have been carried out for piston and cylinder in a piston pump and motor and the lubrication characteristics have been investigated. The friction characteristics on the sliding surfaces have been studied before the tests. The running-in tests have been done according to results of the friction tests. The running-in condition has been decided after considering parameters such as friction force, separation voltage, roughness, roundness and cylindricity. The results are summarized as follows: (1) The rate of running-in of the cylinder with low hardness and low stiffness is lower than that of the piston with high hardness and high stiffness. (2) Optimum taper angle at the piston top for friction force is found. (3) The friction force decreases with decreasing stiffness of the piston.

A mathematical model of the piston in the cylinder on axial piston pump and motor has been indicated considering asperity contacts of surface roughness. The load carrying capacities by fluid film and asperity contacts acting on the piston have been calculated on the basis of Average-Flow-Model proposed by Patir-Cheng and the contact theory derived by Greenwood-Tripp, respectively. The calculations of the equations of motion have been performed by using Newton-Raphson method. It is clarified that whirling of the piston occurs for the narrow clearance between the piston and the cylinder and a long sealing part, similar to the oil whirl phenomena in journal bearing. The stability criterion of the motion has been examined according to Routh Hurwitz conditions.

This paper describes the dynamics of Japanese bows and arrows. In "kyudo" (Japanese archery), archers twist the grip at the moment of shooting, to avoid the "archers' paradox" which is a change of trajectory of the arrow caused by the structure of the bow and the arrow. To investigate the relation between the trajectory of an arrow and the twisting force on the grip, we proposed a dynamic model simplifying three rigid limbs and two elastic hinge. And we made an experimental apparatus that can give a force to twist the grip, and performed a shooting experiment. We measured with a strain gauge the twisting force on the grip, the tension of the string, bending moment at the center of arrow, and the compressive force of the neck. After that, we performed a computer simulation with the model we suggested and compared its result with the result of the experiment. As a result of comparison we proved that the tendency of computer simulation is consistent with the experiment. Then using this model, we investigated the relation between the twisting force and the trajectory of an arrow. As a result of simulation, twisting force is shown to be specially important during the term from taking a stance to the beginning of the shooting.

In the present paper, drag reduction in turbulent pipe flow of water by means of implanting microfibers, instead of injecting or premixing them, has been investigated. Experiments using FRP pipes with microfibers implanted on the inside wall have been conducted at various Reynolds numbers (2000-40000), as well as with various types of microfibers. A maximum drag reduction of about 50% has been obtained using one type of microfiber, and the most effective length of microfibers in terms of the law governig the wall variables has been determined to be 6-8 wall units. The direction of implanted microfibers also was found to have an effect on the drag reduction of pipe flow.

The motion behavior of a rotor for a spherical valve plate has been measured in a bent-axis-type axial piston pump. The behavior of the rotor is represented in two-dimensional polar form and by the minimum film thickness between the rotor and the spherical valve plate. In the case of a pressurizing suction port, (1) the attitude angle of the rotor and the azimuth angle of the rotor increase as the operating conditions become severe, (2) the minimum film thickness is related to bearing modulus, and (3) the behavior of the rotor is quasi-static motion. In the case of a reducing suction port, the minimum film thickness increases as the pump delivery pressure increases.

The influence of the piston rotation on the frictional forces between the piston and the cylinder has been studied experimentally for a swash plate type piston pump and motor. In order to measure the rotational speeds of the piston, the capacitance detecting method has been employed for the piston with the slits. The frictional forces have been measured by means of Piezo-type load washers connected to the floating cylinder. The results show that the piston rotates even under severely lubricated conditions, that the maximum rotational speed of the piston is almost the same as that of the swash plate, and that the piston rotation may influence the frictional forces in low sliding velocity of the piston.

A numerical analysis of the elastohydorodynamic lubrication under high speed and high load has been made for a line contact using a modified Houpert-Hamrock method in order to examine the characteristics of the lubrication region which is called "rigid-variable viscosity" in Hooke's chart. Further, the influence of inlet pressure on the lubrication characteristics has been investigated. The results show that the effect of elastic deformation on the film is significant, and thus the film thickness in the region is more insensitive to the load than the film thickness formulated by Hamrock and Jacobson from numerical solutions in the usual elastic-variable viscosity (E-V) region where it is insensitive to the load. It is also shown that the inlet pressure in the examined region exerts a marked influence on the lubrication characteristics in comparison to that in the typical E-V region, and that the pressure spike point moves to the inlet direction, unlike in the case of the typical E-V region, as the load increases. Therefore, the E-V region in Johnson's chart can be divided further into the two regions.

A numerical analysis of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication under high speed and high load has been made for a line contact using a modified Houpert-Hamrock's method in order to examine the characteristics of the lubrication region which is called 'rigid-variable viscosity' in Hooke's chart. Further, the influence of inlet pressure on the lubrication characteristics has been investigated. Results show that the effect of elastic deformation on the film is significant and thus the film thickness in the region is further insensitive to the load than the film thickness formulated by Hhmrock-Jacobson from numerical solutions in the usual elastic variable viscosity (E-V) region. Also, the inlet pressure in the examined region exerts a marked influence on the lubrication characteristics in comparison to that in the typical E-V region and the pressure spike point moves to the inlet direction contrary to the case of the typical E-V region as the load increases. Therefore, the E-V region in Johnson's charts can be separated further into the two regions.

The elastohydrodynamic lubrication characteristics of an oil hydraulic vane tip contact with a cam ring have been analyzed numerically under various conditions using a modified Houpert-Hamrock's calculation method provided in the previous paper. Results show that the minimum film thickness in the suction port section is differs little from that in the small arc section and the minimum film thickness in the large arc section is greater than that in the small arc section. Nevertheless the contact load in the suction port section is 2.5 times that in the small arc section for the case of an intravane type and the load in the large arc section is greater than that in the small arc section. The combination of inlet pressure and nonlinear piezoviscous effect causes the increase in oil film thickness in the large arc section. Therefore, it is suggested that the elevating discharge pressure will not cause any lubrication trouble if mineral oil is used as the hydraulic fluid ; the water-based hydraulic fluids present an extreme disadvantage to the vane tip lubrication.

The growth of bubble in shear flow and uniform flow is studied numerically (with F. E. M.) and experimentally. The calculated results indicate that the growth rate of bubble in shear flow is not influenced by the condition of flow, and in the case where the bubble viscosity ratio is approximately one, the growth rate of bubble is equal to that of rigid gas-liquid interface. The experimental results show that the growth rate of bubble in shear flow is lower than that in uniform flow; and in shear flow and uniform flow the interfacial resistance against gas diffusion increases with decreasing the interfacial area of bubble.

For controlling the friction between elastomer and solid in liquid, theoretical and experimental study about the effect of interfacial free energy has been studied. The proposed theoretical model considers dynamically molecular chain behavior on elastomer surface and interfacial fracture.
This model can explain the stationary friction characteristics, but not enough to explain the variation of dynamic frictional force under dynamically sliding conditions.

As contact area increase, real contact and lubrication flow deviate from mixed lubrication theory based on the independent asperity contact hypothesis. In this project, contact mechanics and lubricant flow between contacting rough surfaces under high contact ratio condition have been addressed.
Contact analysis for non-Gaussian distributed rough surfaces have been performed by nonlinear finite element structural analysis, and flow between contacting rough surfaces have been calculated numerically for Reynolds equation problem. Contact area, interspace, and flow rate for 3D fabricated rough surfaces have been measured by total reflection method, contrasting density of dye, and gravimetric technique, respectively. As a result, skewness, which is a parameter for non-Gaussian distribution, have a significant influence on the conflation of contact area and leak flow rate, Low flow rate measured and calculate for negative value of skewness which is observed for truncated rough surfaces.

Hydrodynamic lubrication has the effect of reducing friction except at a low speed. Since molecular attractive force (i.e. van del Waals force) has been predominant effect in micro-nanoscopic system, hydrodynamic load capacitance has not been enough to avoid direct contact between surfaces in low velocity condition. "Stiction" is an example. It is important that development of new lubrication mechanism for MEMS in liquid. Head investigator proposed a new mechanism using electric double layer. It was simulated numerically as result that repulsive force has been taken effect at 10 to 100 nanometers gap between surfaces.
In this study, load capacitance has been measured by SPM (Scanning Probe Microscope), for influences of probe radius, applied voltage, kind and concentrations of ion and distance between surfaces for consideration of ability of nano-lubrication by electrical double layer.
SPM has been modified for measurements of normal and frictional force in liquid. A spherical epoxy resin has been pasted at the top of probe tip with sputter-deposited 10nm Au film. Ionic liquid, which is candidate for future lubrication, has been used. Characteristics of repulsive force measured at 10 to 150 mv voltage have been investigated.

The Objective of this project is the experimental verification of Burwell-Strang's hypothesis, that is "abrupt increase of ware rate is caused by transition of yield area from asperity summit level to apparent contact area level".
To achieve the objective, we tried these approaches :
1.We developed a test apparatus for observation of deformation near an asperity using commercial metal microscope. In this test, we measured deformation of mesh previously made on side of softer surface after indentation and dragging between wedge of hard body and flat soft surface.
2.We got good agreement between numerical results of our model used by slip line field theory and those of finite element method. We refined our model using results of FEM. We also calculated distribution of real contact spots under normal and shear stress.
3.We also developed a contact microscope using total reflection method, in order to predict the transition pressure of contact between rough surface and smooth surface. In this apparatus, we can slide contact area in addition to normal load. For preliminary study, we observed growth and increase of real contact spots on blast finished random rough surface under normal load. The results indicated that apparatus could estimate transition pressure and verify our theory.
We are going to study the effect of normal and shear stress on change of real contact spot. We will also try to develop our theory that can predict wear transition pressure under extensive condition.

The threshold of load condition from light to heavy that Burwell and Strang proposed in 1952 as a concept of the mode transition from mild to severe wear, are tried to be estimated considering isotropic and Gaussian surface, and verification by direct observation. In brief, the threshold condition is expressed as the critical pressure at which the nominal contact area is wholly covered with the yielding area. This critical pressure has been calculated using stochastic rough surface contact theory and Johnson's Elastic Plastic Indentation model with Chang-Etsion's analysis. Individual summit of rough asperity has been assumed to be a sphericity and all of them to have the same radius. Analysis has been developed the effect of slip on rough surface contact. The contact is regarded as 2D and is assumed as that between rough surface and plane to apply the slip line field theory.
Micro-sliding mechanism are designed for the system which is able to give the normal load and shearing load to observe the realistic contact points. At the beginning the piezo-scanning stage would be planned for nano-scaled actuator, but it is difficult to decrease the shear deformation at their contact, observe the status of adhesion due to wear of the end of the 400 mm traveling by motor actuated slider.
In the experiments, normal force and tangential force are measured simultaneously. The effects of mechanical characteristics (normal pressure, shear stress, the Young's modulus, hardness and shear strength of surfaces) , geometric characteristics (surface roughness and shape) are investigated in the discussion of the wear mode. The direct observation of the realistic contact area, which mean the shape, number and area of contacted asperity is planed in the near future.

Sliding contact at edge with large defomation in many mechanical elements (journal bearings, piston pumps , etc). Analysis method considering gross deformation for this problem is developed in this project. Precise contact FEM analysis without surface roughness, microscopic contact analysis at surface roughness oil film pressure and their comnination are Discussed.
The analysis model under the conditions of piston-cylinder contact in piston pump/motor is used. First, we handle FEM contact with smaller mesh near contact point, to discuss the appropriate mesh size for contact pressure or deformation., then calculate oil film pressure considering deformation.. The fomulation of oil film thickness are for simple shape contact (circle or cylindrical) simple oil film analysis (ie. Ertl-Grubin theory) are for non-simple shape like the edge of piston. It is adapted method for EHL film at the element, which has complex shape or large displacement. Experimental examinations, measurement of displacement by capacity meter and contact area by IR thermalscope are testing now, so there is no applicable results.

It is in progress to switch to chlorine free refrigerants, since CFCs(Chloro Fluoro Carbons) containing chlorine are considered as causes of ozone depletion and global warming. However, there are several difficulties to alternate refrigerants Particularly, poor solubility of refrigerant in usual mineral oil and poor lubricity of Freon gas are serious. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the lubrication design of sliding parts and to develop the sliding materials and refrigeration oils for alternative refrigerants. A rolling piston type of rotary compressor is widely used as a small refrigerator and air-conditioner for household use because of high volumetric efficiency and compactness. Although the alternation of refrigerants is in progress now, it is indispensable to soluve the lubrication problems of vane tip which has the most severe lubrication condition in refrigerant compressors.
In this project for purpose of developing lubrication design tool for rotary refrigerant compressors, rheological behavior of boundary lubricant film with refrigent molecules.
In addition to that, the coefficients of boundary friction under mixed lubrication in refrigerant atmosphere are estimated by comparing the measured frictional characteristics with the calculated ones and the oil film under elastohydrodynamic lubrication in refrigerant atmosphere are observed by FT-IR microscope in order to obtain unknown parameters of the analysis. Then the validity of this analytical method is shown by comparing metal contact ratios measured for an actual compressor with those of the calculated results. After that, the computer simulations are performed for the lubrication condition in order to suggest guidelines for the lubrication design of the rotary refrigerant compressors.

The tribotester developed in this grant consists of a pressure chamber, a tribotesting part and detection of friction and load. The pressure chamber can withstand up to 5 MPa in refrigerant gas pressure and can control the temperature of the oil bath in the tester from 10 to 80゜C and maintain a constant value within (]SY.+-。[)1゜C.The tribotesting part is a standard ring-on-block type Farex friction testor. The sliding speed ranges from 75x10<@D1-3@>D1 up to 7.3m/s, which covers the whole mixed lubrication region for new refregerants and lubricants under practical temperature, are available with a DC servo motor with 0.85 KW power output. The friction force and the contact load can be detected from the outside through bellows seals.
The boundary friction coefficients for various new refrigerant and new lubricants have been obtained in the mixed lubrication region where the tribo-elements in practical compressor state in the most possibility, by means of the mixed lubrication analysis under hard EHL regime.
The calculated results and the measured results by means of the contact electric resistance have been compared and agreed qualitatively. It is found that the combination of the tribotester and the mixed lubrication analysis is quite useful for selecting new lubricants and new materials against new refrigerants.

The purpose of this study is to get a useful analysis model for dynamically loaded mixed lubricated machine elements with concentrated contact. In this report, a new numerical model has been developed and some experiments have been done to obtain the prosperity of the model.
First, a steady state analysis based on thermal elast-hydrodynamic mixed Lubrication theory (TEHML) is introduced. It considers thermal effects of lubricant visco-elasticity and heat at contact area. In this analysis, not only equations of the elast-hydrodynamic mixed lubrication (EHML) but also energy equations of lubricant film are used. Results of pressure, temperature distribution and friction coefficient are presented. Results of this calculation are compared with those of normal EHML,so film thickness by TEHML calculation is more thin than that by normal EHML calculation. At low slip ratio, friction of TEHML calculation is more large than that of normal calculation. It means thermal calculation for dynamically loaded mixed lubricated machine elements with concentrated contact is important.
Second, for example of dynamically analysis, friction and lubrication between cam and follower has been calculated including equations of motion of cam, and squeeze effect for lubricant film. In this calculation, At the point near cam nose where the load significantly changes, the effects of fluid adiabatic change can not be neglected.
Cam and follower friction experiments has been done to valid the calculations. Friction of caluclations accord with that of experiments. But the test equipment (type I) was not enough rigid, it was influenced natural vibration, so type II equipment has been developed.

The purpose of this reserch is to understand the effect of cavitation caused by surface roughness on the hydrodynamical action near the transition region from hydrodynamic lubrication to boundary lubrication. The observations of the cavities has been made with a pivoted slider having rough surface on a drum and the condition of the cavitation generation and the effect of the cavitation on the lubrication performance were investigated.
The results are shown as follows: (1) The cavities caused by surface roughness were observed in the full film lubricating area for the rough surface but for comparative smooth surface. the cavity was not observed untill two surfaces touched each other. (2) The cavities in the hydrodynamic lubricating area were generated in the backward area of the bearing where the pressure is low. (3) The cavity was generated in the vicinity of the slider center and spreaded to the down stream when the slider touched the rolling drum. (4) The generation of micro cavity did not exert a great effect on the friction coefficient under hydrodynamic lubrication.
Next, to investigate the way of change in the film rupture due to surface roughness and the effect of the film rupture pattern on the bearing performance an apparatus of a transparent slider with rough surface on a roller was employed and the film rupture was observed.
The results are shown as follows: (5) The difference between rough surface and smooth surface was found in the area of the film rupture under the hydrodynmic lubrication. (6) The friction force was infuenced by surface roughness in accordance with the change in film rupture pattern under the hydrodynamic lubrication.
